Letter from the Chapter President & Co-Chairs

Dear Coaching Colleagues, Sponsors, Exhibitors, Supporters, and Friends,

Welcome to the 2019 Capital Coaches Conference! The International Coach Federation Metro DC Chapter is delighted to present this year’s Conference. We hope that it that will deepen our understanding of social identities—what they are, how we attach to them, how others ascribe them to us, and their role in coaching—as well as the roles that narratives and neuroscience play with respect to social identities. We owe a special debt of gratitude to Programming Chair Kori Diehl for her wonderful job of bringing together two top notch keynote speakers, Laura Morgan Roberts, Ph.D. and Amy Brann, and a host of workshop facilitators who will lead topical experiential workshops throughout the day.

In addition to today’s stellar educational programming, we also wanted to ensure that you have ample time for networking with fellow coaches, representatives of our wonderful sponsors and exhibitors, and our speakers and workshop facilitators. Between the wonderful breakfast, lunch and closing reception, along with several timely coffee breaks, you should find plenty of time to renew friendships and acquaintances, and make new connections that can help grow your own personal network and success.

As coaches, we promote coaching as a life-changing experience for individuals, groups, and teams. Our chapter has three value propositions for its members that support that experience—we strive to provide high quality education programs, to foster community among coaches in its geographic footprint, and to provide opportunities for service to others. In addition to the tremendous educational opportunity that this Conference provides, we will again offer this year several practical professional development events (both in person and virtual) throughout the year—including five jam-packed days of learning during International Coaching Week in May 2020. We’ll complement today’s networking options with the Chapter’s holiday party and other occasional social events, and our robust quarterly Coaches Coffee program that enables you to find and bond with other Chapter coaches in your neighborhood. And we offer options for engaging in curated pro bono coaching programs, providing free coaching to clients in the nonprofit space in several different arenas—you’ll hear briefly about these programs later today.

We invite you to jump in, roll up your sleeves, and volunteer to help us live our chapter’s vision. Stop by the ICF Global exhibitor table to let us know how you would like to get involved.

Our Chapter’s Board would also like to thank Loretta Cooper, who led the efforts to promote the Conference, as well as the other board members and folks who contributed in so many ways to make this event happen. Thanks to everyone for your contributions to this Conference and for your investment in our coaching profession.

We would also like to express our sincere gratitude for the sponsors, exhibitors, and vendors who have played and are playing a vital role in making this day possible. Please visit their tables and booths—they have much to offer us.

Whatever your social identities may be, coaching is an exciting profession full of opportunity to help others and grow ourselves. We are honored to have played a small role in bringing the Conference to fruition and investing with you in our collective development that will help propel us all forward.

Coach on!

Coaching I N T H E Real World4 | 2019 CAPITAL COACHES CONFERENCE

Letter from the Programming Chair

Dear 2019 Capital Coaches Conference Participants,

The Program: This year the CCC will offer a space for deep learning and experiences in the area of social identity—“a person’s sense of who they are, based on their group membership(s).” (downloaded from https://www.simplypsychology.org/social-identity-theory.html, March 12, 2019). Social identities can also be ascribed to us as coaches and to our client by others, often without confirmation. We intend to explore how neuroscience and narratives may be critical to the formation of old and new habits of thinking, being and doing as coaches and/or persons being coached, and as members of society-at-large.

We hope that today you can immerse yourselves in conversations and reflection inspired by questions such as:

• What is/are your social identity/ies as a coach? How does this impact your work?

• What are the social identities of your clients? How might their identities, and the ones you ascribe to them, influence your work?

• How might awareness of social identities change your work as a coach?

• What theories, skills, and/or tools might you need to thrive in our intersectional world? (Specifically, we plan to explore the fields of neuroscience and narratives—two content areas that are prevalent in the zeitgeist of the coaching profession.)

• How might these not only serve your clients more effectively, but also help expand your coaching work?

• Where does the concept of social identities take us beyond the discussions of diversity and inclusion?

• And, what other questions would you pose?

New Opportunities: This year we are using the CCC to introduce and gauge our members’ interest in 1) the formation of a Toastmasters’ Group specifically for coaches for the purpose of fine-tuning their presentation and messaging skills to build their businesses; and 2) the formation of a Social Identities Coaching lab. Please find these sessions in the agenda and let your voice be heard about the ongoing value of such programs. We intend them to be member-energized and member-led.

CCEUs: Please find the CCEU award document on the following page. This new format has been approved by ICF Global and will simplify your record keeping. When submitting your credentialing paperwork, you can submit this form as evidence of training toward the required minimums. This process is entirely managed by ICF Global. If you are uncertain if/when you need to use the form please review the material at www.coachfederation.org under the ICF credential tab.

Thank-You! Today’s program has been significantly influenced by the feedback we got last year for greater diversity among speakers and facilitators, longer sessions, and more time to network with your fellow coaches. Seasoned coach? New to coaching? Just curious? We hope today’s program has something for all. No matter what your social identity as a coach, please join in with a beginner’s mind, a dose of appreciative inquiry, and an abundance gratitude for our great community of ICF Metro DC coaches.

Sincerely, Kori Diehl

Keynote SpeakerAmy BrannNeuroscience for Coaches: What’s New?

8:30 - 9:30 AM Ballroom Salons D-E

Amy is the Director of Synaptic Potential, the international team of thought leaders applying cutting edge science to organizations. They have worked with companies such as Warner Brothers, EY, University of Nottingham Ningbo China, Twinings, the NHS, News UK, and Mondelez International. Their bespoke approach means they partner with organizations to help them strengthen their strategy, culture and performance. The team works globally sharing reliably simple applications of neuroscience that lead to game changing insights and results. Having partnered with Bangor University’s Behavior Change Centre, the approaches used gained additional credibility from the input of diverse researchers. When Amy speaks she passionately delivers the message that you and your organization have a huge amount of potential that can be better accessed if you understand how to work with your brain optimally. Leaving UCL medical school with a fascination around how to get people who are good to be even better, Amy weaves all these insights into practical takeaways. Your brain may not be the whole answer…but it is the best place to start! Amy is the author of three books: Make Your Brain Work, Neuroscience for Coaches & Engaged: The neuroscience behind creating productive people in successful organizations. She is also a visiting lecturer to Manchester Metropolitan University teaching the neuroscience of leadership on the Master of Sports Directorship programme.

DESCRIPTION OF THE KEYNOTE:

Neuroscience has been a hot topic now for some years. But what is really happening within organizations? If you’re embracing neuroscience what do you need to do to distinguish yourself? And if you’re yet to embed it in your coaching then what is all the fuss about? Together let’s dive into some of the emerging science that every Coach should be aware of. The concepts that most of the world are still unaware of. Also lets cover the most common mistakes people who say they are in the know are making. Finally, we will look to the future and see how best you can equip yourself to best serve your clients as the world of work continues to change.

Keynote Speaker

Laura Morgan Roberts, Ph.D.Activating Your Best Self: The Power of Positive Identity Storytellings

1:50 - 2:50 PM Ballroom Salons D-E

Dr. Laura Morgan Roberts is a Professor of Practice at the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business. She has served on the faculties of Harvard Business School, Georgetown University McDonough School of Business, and Antioch University’s Graduate School of Leadership and Change. Laura’s research and consulting brings strength-based practices to leaders who seek extraordinary performance and personal fulfillment. She examines how leaders cultivate positive identities in diverse work organizations. Her books include: Race, Work and Leadership; Positive Organizing in a Global Society; and Exploring Positive Identities and Organizations. Laura earned a BA in Psychology (highest distinction & Phi Beta Kappa) from the University of Virginia, and an MA and Ph.D. in Organizational Psychology from the University of Michigan.

DESCRIPTION OF THE KEYNOTE:

Less than twenty percent of global workers are maximizing their potential; most people struggle to deepen their engagement with work tasks and colleagues. How can we foster more meaningful connections with work? This session will introduce an evidence-based toolkit for activating best selves through storytelling. This transformational technique is anchored in our stories about navigating unexpected twists, turns, surprises and obstacles along our career paths. We will practice (re)narrating our own and others’ positive identity-based contributions, in order to build psychological, social and tangible resources, foster generative actions, and promote collective growth. We will also examine how these appreciative techniques compare with conventional competency and deficit-based models of development. By raising the standard for personal and collective development, we will explore how to inspire people to activate the best in themselves and others.

Talk Yourself Into Success and Get the Outcomes You Desire

ROOM: White Oak ATIME: 9:45 AM - 11:00 AMFACILITATOR: Susan Commander Samakow, PCC, CPCC

Susan Commander Samakow, PCC, CPCC, is an experienced, ICF Professional Certified Coach, Trainer, Facilitator, Speaker, and Author, working with individuals, business, the government, and the intelligence community. Susan supports and guides her clients to reach new levels of performance and satisfaction in their careers, relationships, and life. A former President of the International Coach Federation DC Chapter and ICF Global Education Committee Chair, Susan earned her CPCC from CTI. Susan graduated from the ORSC program, C-IQ, Foundations of Positive Psychology, and created the East Coast Chapter Leaders, as well as unifying the ICF with ATD and CBDON. She was also one of four leadership coaches who started the Katrina Initiative to help the New Orleans community and business leaders (pro bono). At the foundation of her work are positive self-talk (our internal dialogue), resilience, and life and career transition. When needed, Susan provides clients with confidence and resilience strategies enabling clients to be more successful and get past self-imposed limits. She motivates individuals and teams with her “take the ball and run” attitude. Susan’s work is supported by the latest neuroscience research. Susan has conducted individual coaching, executive and team coaching, workshops, company and board retreats, webinars, tele-classes, and more. She recently published her first book, Talk Yourself Into Success: Strategies for Positive Self-Talk, Confidence, and Resilience. Susan is passionate about developing seasoned and emerging leaders and engaging them in meaningful conversations. Susan provides tools needed to build relationships through conversations that promote trust, respect, and relationship building. Through insightful conversations individuals and teams thrive in a creative, collaborative culture and develop healthy communication patterns

and a productive mindset. Susan has been featured on WCBS, WNBC, and writes a monthly column for a digital forum. She is poised to be one of the new thought leaders on self-talk and resilience for today’s modern professional. She is married and has two daughters.

DESCRIPTION OF THE WORKSHOP: In this interactive session, Susan will show the relationship between neuroscience and self-talk, resilience, and change and transition, and how that impacts our decision-making. She will share her proven formula for success, as well as tie-in her business and life blueprint, on how to thrive and live a flourishing life. So much of how we live is based on our mindsets, what we choose to focus on, and our perspective. By changing our thoughts, we can change our lives. Notice thoughts (self-talk); these can shift our thinking to the positive or productive.

The 5th Domain: Navigating the Flow of Identity Coaching

ROOM: White Oak BTIME: 9:45 AM - 11:00 AMFACILITATOR: Sukari Pinnock, MSOD, PCCCO-FACILITATOR: Amber Mayes, MSOD

neighborhood. Raised in a multicultural household by an African American father from Georgia and a Greek immigrant mother, she developed an early passion for helping people communicate across differences. In the past 20 years Amber has developed a global leadership coaching and organization consulting practice that integrates issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion. She is based in Northern California and is a proud auntie of the best 6-year-old on the planet!

DESCRIPTION OF THE WORKSHOP: As a developmental tool, coaching is increasingly being used in organizational settings across the globe. Many leaders, formally or informally, coach individuals to help them develop professionally. Research suggests very few coaches are trained to address issues of diversity, equity and inclusion in the coaching relationship. This workshop will help participants apply a social group identity lens to their work, and develop an understanding of the dominant/marginalized power dynamics inherent in all coaching relationships. Through the use of a diagnostic tool and customized coaching scenarios, participants will develop new awareness to better support those whose social identity groups—and world views—differ from their own.

Natalie is an ICF-certified leadership coach through Georgetown University and a certified practitioner of The Leadership Circle 360 Profile and Leadership Culture Survey. She holds an MBA from UMD’s Robert H. Smith School of Business, an MA from NYU, and a BA from Georgetown University

DESCRIPTION OF THE WORKSHOP: Our racial/ethnic identity derives from awareness of our social selves, narratives emerging from lived experience, and the lens through which we see. Given our country’s history of racism and oppression, we may have identities linked to inequities and stereotypes. A coach’s capacity to unearth fundamental aspects of individual identity—while recognizing the workplace as a socialized institution that manifests structural oppression—is critically important to holding space as clients explore the role of identity difference and narratives in their leadership. We will examine how to explore race meaningfully within a coaching engagement, including tools and practices to facilitate conversations across identity difference.

Social Work. Through all his efforts, Mark seeks to bring joy and curiosity to his work and help his clients feel the same. He loves tackling new challenges, leaning into difficult conversations, and using active empathetic listening, humor, and collaboration to create mutual gain.

DESCRIPTION OF THE WORKSHOP: Social Narratives (perceptions, beliefs, expectations, and assumptions) are key invisible drivers that inform the behavioral habits of our clients and our work as coaches. How can we root ourselves in our “standard” and uncover some of the “stuff” that gets in the way? We will delve into these questions to explore how our social identities influence our approach to building relationships, particularly across lines of difference. Participants will work through the 5 Square Framework, a tool that operationalizes emotional intelligence and has been used to coach hundreds of leaders in the education and non-profit sectors, and apply it to practice.

DESCRIPTION OF THE WORKSHOP: The brain is wired to see many aspects of identity from an Either/Or perspective, creating “us vs. them” mentalities. I’m conservative or liberal, candid or diplomatic, warm or strong, feminine or masculine. Neuroscience shows when we don’t have a way to make sense of these paradoxical aspects of identity, we suffer—on both the individual and collective levels. This session explores how we can ease this suffering by helping clients transform the Either/Or’s of identity into dynamic Both/And’s using the Embodied Polarity Process and exploring the intellectual, emotional, and spiritual aspects of the paradox of identity.

DESCRIPTION OF THE WORKSHOP: Drawing upon neuroscience research, we now understand that communication (and coaching conversations) actually build networks, frameworks and brain capabilities. Some communication activates the lower, primitive brain to move into protective behavior and close down, while other conversations make us feel more introspective and connected. Neuroscience further reveals that positive (or Level III) communication triggers different neurochemicals which activate the part of our brain where trust resides. In this highly interactive program coaches will learn: the neuronal regions associated with trust and safety (such as the Reticular Activating System); how to help clients upregulate and down regulate neurochemicals of trust during communication; three techniques to help clients prepare for building trust. Attendees will also build upon the Applied Neuroscience concepts learned in the session to a real coaching scenario.

Making Peace with Our Inner Ageist and Owning Our Wise Elder ROOM: OakleyTIME: 11:20 AM - 12:35 PM FACILITATOR: Jane Kerschner, PCC, MA Ed

Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?

This last line of the late Mary Oliver’s poem, “Summer Day,” is the essence of Jane Kerschner’s work in the world. The theme of her career has been supporting the personal growth and development of others as they transition through different events and stages of life. Being a seeker, Jane always starts as a learner in her search for meaning and purpose, then guides others through using her skills as educator, ontological coach, facilitator, trainer, and colleague.

When Jane turned 60, she chose to pursue the path of wise elder. Currently, she focuses her practice on creating critical conversations with individuals and groups on addressing the challenges and opportunities of creating ‘what’s next’. In addition to her private coaching clients, she facilitates Reinventing Retirement and Wise Aging Seminars in the Washington Metro area and at Chautauqua Institute in Chautauqua, NY. Jane is thrilled to contribute to the evolving paradigm of aging.

Jane holds certifications from Newfield Asia’s Health Coaching Certification, Retirement Options™, Newfield Network Coach Training, International Coaching Federation, True Purpose Institute®, Five Rings Somatic Coaching, and Wise Aging Facilitation with the Institute of Jewish Spirituality. Jane has a BS in education from Northwestern University, and MA degrees in Human Development from George Washington University and Human Performance Systems Improvement from Marymount University.

Jane’s ‘what’s next’ includes meaningful work and play, volunteer pursuits, spending summers in Chautauqua, NY with her husband, Chaz, and being a grandmother!

DESCRIPTION OF THE WORKSHOP:

Babyboomer coaches and clients have become the social group they once assessed as diminishing, old, and invisible. While we may look and feel younger than our parents, we continue to live their ‘stories’ of retirement and aging. We have embodied our youth-worshiping culture. Until we meet and greet our ‘inner ageist’, we will continue to struggle with our evolving social identity and miss the rich opportunities of eldering. In this experiential workshop, coaches have the opportunity to explore their own, often unconscious, beliefs about retirement and aging and discover the possibilities and joys of wise eldering. To support our own clients effectively, we must free our own selves from the barriers and burdens impeding our imagination of what’s next.
