Issue 6 January 2009 I hope you all enjoyed the Christmas and New Year break and feel refreshed and ready to go in the back half of the season. There are only five rounds left and three of those are ‘one- dayers’, which can make the difference between playing and not playing finals. Over the break, I was lucky enough to attend the Boxing Day Test and observe at first hand the overall quality of the South African fielding. Through saving runs in the field and great slips catching, they were able to place pres- sure on Australia and then when batting, they were able to get on top on day three through Australia’s sloppy fielding. No matter what level of cricket you are play- ing, poor fielding has a big impact on a side’s performance. We have all played in games when a number of catches have gone down or continual missed fields have let a “batsman off”, who has then gone on to punish the bowling side. Fielding should be viewed as not an add-on to batting and bowling, but a separate compo- nent of the game that needs to be practised over and over. This season, we have been focusing on our efforts in the field, which includes talking and supporting your team mates. Being disci- plined in this area will strengthen your own game as well as that of your team. Fielding is about creating pressure against the opposition by supporting the bowler and cre- ating further opportunities to get another wicket. So far, I believe we have come along way in this area, however, we do have slip ups and it is these hiccups that we must try to eliminate and strive harder to become consistent. Let’s continue to do the hard work at training and use our voice come Saturday’s. Graeme. January 2009

I hope you all enjoyed the Christmas and New Year break and feel refreshed and ready to go in the back half of the season. There are only five rounds left and three of those are ‘one-dayers’, which can make the difference between playing and not playing finals. Over the break, I was lucky enough to attend the Boxing Day Test and observe at first hand the overall quality of the South African fielding. Through saving runs in the field and great slips catching, they were able to place pres-sure on Australia and then when batting, they were able to get on top on day three through Australia’s sloppy fielding. No matter what level of cricket you are play-ing, poor fielding has a big impact on a side’s performance. We have all played in games when a number of catches have gone down or continual missed fields have let a “batsman off”, who has then gone on to punish the bowling side.

Fielding should be viewed as not an add-on to batting and bowling, but a separate compo-nent of the game that needs to be practised over and over. This season, we have been focusing on our efforts in the field, which includes talking and supporting your team mates. Being disci-plined in this area will strengthen your own game as well as that of your team. Fielding is about creating pressure against the opposition by supporting the bowler and cre-ating further opportunities to get another wicket. So far, I believe we have come along way in this area, however, we do have slip ups and it is these hiccups that we must try to eliminate and strive harder to become consistent. Let’s continue to do the hard work at training and use our voice come Saturday’s. Graeme.

How’s that? Rob Hudson M.P. (Member for Bentleigh) and Cr. Nick Staikos (Glen Eira Council) weren’t too keen on confronting Bentleigh ANA’s bowling machine, but they were happy to play back-stop as young Ben McKinstry showed his style at the crease. As the member for Bentleigh donned the keeping gloves, he was supported at first slip by Cr Staikos. The pair have provided more tangible back-up for the club by helping to ensure that an additional practice pitch and net was created thanks to State Government funding and the Glen Eira Community Grants Program combined with Bentleigh ANA’s own contribution. “I think that Bentleigh ANA is clearly growing and needs more net practice areas” said Rob Hudson. “The addition of the third net means that they can practice more intensively across a whole range of grades within the club.” With seven senior and five junior teams, Bentleigh ANA has close to 150 registered players, and the volume of cricketers was placing strain on the existing practice set-up. The additional net will allow for longer batting sessions and the greater use of the bowling machine to train batsmen. Mr Hudson said it was an example of maximising the use of a facility. “I want to congratulate the club not only for raising some of the money towards the nets but also for providing the opportunities to young people We have the lowest or second lowest level of per capita open space in the whole of urban Melbourne. That means that we have to use these facilities intensively and they have to be of a high standard.” Councillor Staikos said that the nets were the culmination of several months’ work. “The nets are a great outcome and it was good to see the state government and the council both putting in funds to keep that going.” Mr Hudson added: “Bentleigh ANA is one of our mainstay cricket clubs and has played an important role in the community since 1930 and it’s really important that we continually upgrade and update these facilities so the kids can enjoy their cricket and have a great time.” On the night the new net was opened, Bentleigh ANA’s crick-eters also took part in a special training session conducted by Victorian state squad member Aiden Blizzard and former state squad opener Jason Arnberger.

A lesson in History ANA’s Third Eleven finished second at the end of the 1968/69 home and away games and came up against Sandringham in the Semi-final. Led by the experienced Percy Porter, who had amassed almost 400 runs for the year and taken over 30 wickets, the ANA team bowled first and struggled from the outset, as Sandringham amassed a monstrous total of 9 for 332. ANA started well but wickets soon began tumbling steadily. ANA was in dire trouble at 9 for 235. The last hope of saving the Semi-final lay squarely on the shoulders of a skinny 14-year-old kid who had been occupying the crease since the score was 2 for 76. The young hopeful was a lad named Mick Taylor, who, at this stage, had been batting for all of the last day when he was joined by veteran Tom Lonie. Amazingly, Lonie played a vital hand as he hit up 26 not out while Taylor remained unbeaten on 78 not out, as ANA saved the Semi-final, ending up with 9 for 269 at stumps. So strong was the feeling towards the efforts of the young Taylor, that the rest of the team “chipped in” to buy a cricket bat for the future star, whose father had been tragically killed in a car smash. He was presented with the bat by Percy Porter prior to the Grand Final. History was to see Taylor eventually rise through the ranks at District Cricket Club South Melbourne, to eventually become Vice Captain of Victoria and represent Australia, performing incredibly well in the “rebel” tour of South Africa. An extremely capable right-hand batsman Mick Taylor achieved much at first-class level, including 1000 runs in a season while playing with both Victoria and Tasmania.

Taylor took his time in establishing himself at first-class level. Born on June 9, 1955, Michael David Taylor represented Victo-ria half a dozen times in the late 1970s – he made a century in his first game and went on to win the Ryder Medal in 1981-82 for the best player in the VCA games. In 1984-85 he batted for eight and a half hours in compiling 234 not out against the West Indians in a Victorian total of 7/601. His epic innings contained only 16 boundaries. Despite his consistency for three seasons, a place in the Australian XI wasn’t forth-coming. Taylor bucked the system when he toured South Africa in both 1985-86 & 1986-87 on what were described as rebel tours because they didn’t have the sanction of the Australian Cricket Board. On the first tour he was Australia’s best batsman with 668 runs at an average of 55.66 an innings. His highest score was 109 against the South African XI in Durban, making it the third time he had reached three figures against a near Test strength attack. Returning to domestic cricket in Australia, Taylor gave Tasmania fine service with 1003 runs @ 45 in 1987/88 and prolific grade cricket performances, including a hat-trick of premierships with North Hobart in 1991/92, 1992/93 and 1993/94. He returned to South Melbourne in 1994/95 and is the current President of Casey-South Melbourne Cricket Club.

An in depth description of the first 70 years’ history of the Bentleigh ANA Cricket Club is available in the club's 70th Year Book or on the website. The Club intends to produce an 80th Year Book later this year.

The 1985 Australian rebel squad: (back row, front left) Trevor Hohns, Michael Haysman, unknown official, Graham Yallop, Rod McCurdy,Terry Alder-man, John Maguire, Rodney Hogg, Carl Racke-mann,Tom Hogan, Peter Faulkner, (front row, from left) Michael Taylor,Steve Smith, John Dyson, Kim Hughes, Greg Shipperd, Steve Rixon.

I am certain the boys can turn their season around with some good results coming in the second half. Perseverance and a strong commitment from all players, with concentration being the focal point should help them finish off the season in style. Special mention to Matt Withers for making his senior debut and from all accounts Matty, you’re playing too low. Well done. Under 16’s again are in a great position at the turnaround mark, only dropping one game in the first half and that was only by a handful of runs. Des is once again doing a tremendous job with his biggest concern being how to keep the boy’s focused and their minds on the job. This year has been a bonanza for first and second year 16’s playing senior cricket and as of this moment we have at least 9 players contributing regularly to senior sides with regular appearances in Woolnough Shield and even one Longy game. Keep your eyes on these guys they have every chance of being there at the business end. Rob Lawford

After a well earned break for Christmas, our junior teams are going to kick off again this weekend with a one day game. The story so far is the 12 E’s are developing nicely with their game. Good coaching from “Collo” and support from parents and Snr players have enabled this group of youngster’s to perform to above the standard for the grade. They are well ahead in both ability and desire to step up to the higher grade next season. The 12 C’s are perhaps the form side of the competition, with good wins coming from their last couple of outings. Tim and Richard have really brought these boy’s together as a team and should take great pride in their achievements regardless of out-comes for the rest of the year; although saying that I expect the boys to be playing a big part in the finals this year. Under 14’s are an enigma! They have great potential, good Captaincy and very good coaching from both Glenn and Chris. They have had some very good individual performances from most of the side, in fact I think everyone of them has had one or two outstanding games. Unfortunately they have all been on different days.

Oh what a night …. The arrival of Santa at King George was once again a highlight of the end of the year Christmas Party. All the kids there must have been good little children throughout the year because they each received a present from Santa! The evening was a huge success with great food including a spit roast, fantastic raffle prizes and a great turnout. One of the highlights was James ‘Oompa’ Oswald winning one of the hampers… the smile was infectious! And of course Zyber sitting on Santa’s knee! Thanks must go to the following : • Tim Irving for kindly donating & cooking the spit roast. • Michael Hargood assistant cook and official taster • Alastair & Alison Richardson for donating a large portion of

the hampers • To all those who provided a salad for the evening. A special thankyou to Jules & Rob Lawford, Alison, Alastair & Rebecca Richardson and Gino Fulco for organising the event. …. and finally, a huge thankyou to every-one who attended & helped make it such a great night.
