And the winner is Hollace. That was the announcement made 2 weeks ago when Fortune Finder

Music Group held their 2nd Annual “Summer Showdown: Battle of the Bands” at The Hood in Palm Desert. It was tough competition between the 3 bands that made the finals which also included Thr3Strykes and Blackwater, but Hollace walked off with first place and a cool $1000.00 check.

The band is comprised of: Alex Antonio (vocals), Frank Michel (lead guitar), James Hollis Eaton (rhythm guitar) Shawn “Stretch” Fisher (bass) and Josh Ballard (drums). From the moment they took the stage they held the audience in the palm of their hand. Frontman Alex Antonio’s vocals were spot on with dynamic range as he worked the stage with moves similar to Axel Rose, but never an imitation. The band as a whole, were tight and never missed a beat even though drummer Josh Ballard had just gotten out of the hospital with pneumonia. Hollace is a high energy, melodic rock band with radio-ready songs and catchy hooks that will stay in your head long after you hear them.

It’s been an interesting road for these 5 guys. While they prefer to focus more on the future and not talk much about their previous bands it is important for the readers to know

a few facts. Ballard, Eaton and Fisher have all been friends since high school and currently all live together in Ballard’s home, which also serves as a home recording studio and practice space for the band.

Eaton is married and travels back and forth to Reno where his wife and 16 year old daughter live. Both have been very supportive of him trying his hand at a music career here in the valley. “She’s been fantastic. Without her support I wouldn’t be able to do this,” commented Eaton.

Back in the early 2000’s, Ballard and Eaton were in the band Wasted Sobriety. Moving forward to a little over 3 years ago, Michel had met Giorg Tierez through a Craig’s list ad to form a band, which they called Burning Bettie. Ballard came on and then Eaton and Fisher. Things were ok for a while, however the band parted ways with Tierez only a few weeks before they won the “Best Rock Band” award at the CV Music Awards this past May.

Michel says he was ready to call it quits early on until Ballard came on. “Giorg told me he had an awesome drummer coming on and the first time I heard Josh I was blown away by his skill and professionalism so I decided to stay.”

“It just wasn’t working out with Giorg,” says Ballard. “But we prefer to talk about the future and not the past. We’re not here to talk bad about anyone or hold any grudges. We’re here to make music.”

During that same time, Hollace frontman Alex Antonio, was having difficulties with his band, Deadend Paradox. “I just wasn’t feeling it anymore when I would go to practice. I hung out a few times with the guys from Burning Bettie when Giorg wasn’t there and we jammed a bit and we were all like ‘Wow! Did that just happen?’ But we never thought anymore about it,” shared Antonio, during a recent group interview with Hollace. “Then

when they parted ways, things just happened organically.”

Michel goes on to share, “It’s just a really good fit with Alex. His vocals are amazing. He just came in right away and started putting lyrics to our music and we were able to put out a 3 song demo in no time.”

The band currently has 12 songs finished and several others in the works and that’s with them only being together for 3 months. I definitely see this band destined for big things. Their show that night at The Hood was full throttle from start to finish and I agree with Michel that Antonio has some amazing vocal chops to go with his confident showmanship as a frontman.

“When I was with Deadend I was always playing guitar and singing,” said Antonio. “With Hollace I decided to put down the guitar and just sing and perform and I’m glad I did.”

And by the audience’s reaction that night I think all the ladies are glad he did too. Everyone loves a charismatic frontman that can also deliver a powerful vocal range. All that would be for nothing without the solid musicianship of the rest of the band. These guys are taking this serious and carve out time to practice on a regular basis at least twice a week.

“Everything came together with Hollace so fast it’s almost scary,” said Michel. “But we really feel that we have something that is rock solid. We really want to define a new generation of rock. We feel our style is unique and we want to put our own stamp on it.”

It is with a heavy heart that I share that on Monday morning, Sept. 7, James Hollis Eaton’s 16 year old daughter, Alana Sheri Davison passed away. I received the call from a devastated Josh Ballard late Monday night. He and Fisher had been her Uncles all her life. Both Ballard and Fisher were on their way to Salt Lake City at the time of me writing this to be there to support their best friend James during this horrific time. Our thoughts, prayers, hugs and support go out to James and his wife Brook and their family.

would imagine that the Orquesta collections should be available sometime in the spring or early summer of next year. I am not exactly sure what kind of US release will occur, but I would guess that it will not be much later than when they come out in Europe.

CVW: Last I checked you were in Colorado recording a new Hermano album?

Brown: After close to eight years since the last Hermano album, I cannot express strongly enough just how excited I am about what we recorded while in Denver during the last week of August. Hermano has always been about finding that open window of opportunity that fits everyone’s schedule, so it has always worked out that we can only find those moments every few years. Family, other bands, work, various contractual obligations, etc. have always factored into when we are able to put together a collection or get out and tour. This eight year wait has been an exceptionally long one for us. We were able to organize a week in Denver to record them, and honestly, it was an absolute explosion of material that we were able to track in just a week. The recordings that we just completed are enormous, as is usual with the band. We left that session knowing that we had accomplished something pretty damn

fantastic. It is going to be at least a year before all of the pieces are in place, and the album hits the shelves.

For me, ever since that moment that my mom sat me down at our old Wurlitzer and began to teach me how to play those old gospel and blues songs, well, the desire to create music has coursed through my blood. Definitely, over the duration of my life and all the experiences I have had writing and performing, there have been extreme highs and many disappointments, but when it comes right down to brass tacks I could not imagine not being in some way involved with the process of creating something that speaks to and pronounces the things that come from the very core of my soul. Perhaps that is what is really important when trying to keep a perspective on exactly why I have such a strong compulsion to express myself through music.

Producer, singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Steve “Dandy” Brown, best known for his work with the bands

Hermano, Orquesta del Desierto, John Garcia (Kyuss, Unida, Slo Burn), along with his solo releases, will be performing live at the Joshua Tree Trading Post this Saturday. This will be a rare, full band performance by this desert rock staple, and one that no self-respecting lover of the genre should miss.

Brown’s notable career as a musician and songwriter began with Greg Dulli (Afghan Whigs) in their seminal 1980’s Midwestern rock band, The Black Republicans. Brown followed that up by producing and writing the majority of the critically acclaimed music for the first Hermano album, Only a Suggestion. After moving to the California desert, he formed and produced Orquesta del Desierto and commenced touring and producing albums with both groups. Dandy Brown has recently completed his latest collection of solo material, Damned to the Heels of Success, described as a “bridge between both Hermano and Orquesta del Deseirto.”

CVW: What can the audience expect at your show?

Brown: It will be an entire band performance. We are lucky enough this time around to have Damian Lautiero sitting in on bass, and, of course, the fabulous Mark Engel and Jaime Correa as well. I look forward to every chance I get to play music with those dudes. They all fucking rock! Most of the material we will be performing will come from my solo release, but I always throw in a few songs from both Hermano and Orquesta del Desierto as well.

CVW: Last we spoke you were working on some remixes and re-releases of your former projects. How is that progressing?

Brown: Both of the Orquesta del Desierto albums have now been remixed and mastered, and I couldn’t be happier with the results. The first album was remixed by Jason Groves at Sneak Attack Studio in Lexington, Kentucky, and, wow, he has really breathed new life into the collection and brought out all of the nuances we had hoped to achieve when we first recorded them. As for the second album, Dos, it was remixed by Harper Hug at Thunder Underground Studio in Palm Springs, and what he has been able to do with reimagining those songs is absolutely amazing. I am thrilled to put these albums back out for folks to hear. At this point I am in the process of negotiating the best home for the collections. As of right now, there are a handful of boutique labels in Spain and Italy who want to release the albums on vinyl only, so if all falls into place as it should, I

beauty who showed up to play gypsy music one night; very intimidating at first, until we spoke. I found out that this single mom and ICU nurse, plays to distract herself when her little girl is with the father. One of the best improvisational musicians I've ever met. Which is also true of phenomenal talent, Leslie Mariah Andrews, who found her musical confidence at our open mics. She writes brilliant songs and can play behind her back like Hendrix. But beyond the incredible performance aspect, she plays

that will infiltrate every listener’s deeper senses.

CVW: What has been your best and your most difficult musical experience to date?

Quinn: Sitting on the piano bench as a kid with my sister while she played ‘Maybe I’m Amazed.’ Leaving my job at the Gaslight, a small alternative rock club in Hollywood where I worked late at night, to go work with Fred Drake at Rancho De La Luna, with plenty of Nag Champa in the air. And playing Bob Dylan for my baby as soon as he came home from the hospital. Those come to mind as the best.

The most difficult experience? Well, having grown up as a kid actor, working with bona fide genius' like Orson Welles, and surrounded by great musicians in Laurel Canyon like Frank Zappa, the bar was set very high. I'd already had my 'fifteen minutes of fame' before I was five years old. I had to find my own 'Canyon of Dreams' and did so in Joshua Tree.

CVW: Tell me how this band came together and why it’s special?

Quinn: Over the years of running Pappy's and the Saloon's open mic nights, it came together very organically. I didn't even realize it was a band, with a fairly huge repertoire, until we were asked to play 'down the hill' a couple summers back. We suddenly had hours of music, which we'd only played together three songs at a time.

I will say, Thom Merrick (bass) has been a third of one of my favorite bands (The Sibleys) for over a decade, and is an accomplished painter who plays for the sheer joy of it. Jeff Boaz is a solid drummer and person, who had suffered an accident twenty years ago and was unable to play a trap set until we asked him to join us one night - it all came back to him like riding a bicycle. The cellist, Jennifer Irvine, is a tall

Joshua Tree has truly become the shining star of the high desert, a cultural icon and a state of mind

where creative vibrations seem to rise up from the dirt. It has drawn to itself some of the most uncommon, authentically demiurgic artisans around, and Teddy Quinn has found himself at the center of it all. Quinn has become somewhat of a high desert icon by many at this point, and it’s easy to understand why. Aside from his peace loving, kind and gentle demeanor, Quinn hosts the world renowned open mic night at Pappy and Harriet’s in Pioneer Town, a weekly occurrence where artists come from all over to participate, and in one instance, even Robert Plant showed up to jam. Quinn not only hosts it, but plays in the house band. To channel his own passion for music and his compassion for the many artists he finds himself surrounded by, Quinn also founded the nonprofit, Radio Free Joshua Tree, a web based radio station that plays many local artists. And as if that weren’t enough, he hosts bands and songwriter rounds at his own Beatnick Lounge, where he records and archives the music passing through town.

Next Thursday, however, Teddy Quinn will not just be the house band, he and his musical ensemble of friends will be headlining. Based on what I have personally experienced listening to the fabulous, tenured and gifted musicians aligned with Quinn, this will not just be a sonically pleasing event with well crafted, heart stirring songs, it will be an act of pure love

the most tasty leads around. All of them are pure hearts who give me the support to explore my singing and my songwriting.

It is always special to play on a stage where I've seen many of my heroes perform- Leon Russell, Country Joe, Daniel Lanois, Eric Burdon and Ronnie Spector. It's also like home to me, and the women who own the club (Pappy’s) are like my sisters. This is the first time in years that I have an entire evening there to play with my band, and I don't expect to do it again anytime soon.

I've been writing songs for 40 years, so I plan to do some from almost every phase, but I'm especially excited to do some of the newer ones that I've rarely done in front of anybody. If we're lucky, I'll get Shari Elf up to join me for a song or two.

When I started playing at the old Beatnik, around 2000, I called my weekly show 'The World Tour that the World Travels To' because the audience - usually no more than a couple of people - was always from remote places, visiting Joshua Tree. I think that little joke on my part has come true. Now, Joshua Tree and Pappy's are some of the world's biggest draws for music-lovers and I'm still here, still in love with the night sky and the inspiration that seems to float in the air.

Week #3 of the CV Open Mic Competition Fall edition brought on a lot of familiar faces, plus a

few new performers! New bands came out to perform and compete while DJ Alex Updike kept our crowd entertained in between performances. Exciting audience giveaways were awarded to the loudest and rowdiest of the crowd and we were graced with a comedic performance by Matthew Maloney. Once all of the musicians performed and the judge vote by Jesse Tostado of PLab Productions (50%) was tallied and added to the audience applause score (50%), it was enigmatic and popular band, The Hive Minds, who took home 1st place and a 1 hour professional vocal lesson from KAM Studios. The band will now move on to the Semi Finals in November. If they win there, they’ll compete in the Grand Finals for a shot at a MTV Quality Music Video Production from Desert C.A.M. Studios/Winmill Films and award winning Director Chip Miller, plus a $500 trip to Las Vegas from Crater Lake Spirits, as well as an Artist Development Session from Grammy nominated Producer Ronnie King, and a Promotional Photo Shoot from Visions Photography. 2nd place was awarded to the always energy filled band, Upper Class Poverty, who took home 1 hour of studio time from JEM Productions. 3rd place went to Nuclear Cowboys who always draw a crowd and who took home a Gift Card to Burgers & Beer.

One of smooth jazz’s top hit makers is coming to the desert. Blake Aaron will be the special guest

star of Darryl Fitzgerald Walker’s band at Ruth Ruiz’s party “Elements of Jazz and Soul” September 24 at the Miramonte Hotel in Indian Wells from 6-9 with artist “Meet and Great” until 9:30.

Dubbed “a genius on the guitar” by the Los Angeles Times, he launched his career as an L.A. studio musician and sideman and has recorded and/ or performed with an incredible array of jazz, pop and R&B artists. Blake Aaron has already scored Top Five Billboard airplay hits with his first-ever Latin flavored single “Encantadora,” a high energy exotic funk tune featuring Najee on flute; the soulful, percussive jazz tune “You’re The One For Me,” featuring Aaron’s powerful electric lines playing off vocalist Spencer Day’s romantic storytelling; and the snappy and slamming, brass fired old school jam “Groove-O-Matic.” Aaron also released as singles the contemporary Latin dance romp “Sol Amor (A Story of Passion)” and the midtempo R&B romance “You’re My Miracle (A Story of Bliss in the Groove)” featuring cowriter Derek Bordeaux on lead vocals. He just got back from China where he is working on setting up a tour. He found and met the love of his life, Sina, (from China) via the internet some years ago and it’s a true love story. Within 3 weeks of contact he flew there to meet her. She moved to be with him in the US a year later. They married and have 2 beautiful children, a little girl and boy, who boy speak fluent English and Chinese.

A native of the Coachella Valley, DJ Sizzle (Joe Cornejo) has always been interested in music. Sizzle

began collecting music at age six with the help of his older cousin: “My uncle Tony Rico (RicoMix) inspired me at a young age to be a DJ. He would always hook me up with the latest mixes and also got me into different genres of music I wouldn’t ordinarily be into.”

Although his interest began at young age, Sizzle didn’t begin experimenting with music until he was 24. He started out DJing house parties for family and friends. Sizzle talks about how he would eventually join a local entertainment company which has a been a great move for his career: “For six years, I have been employed by Desert DJ Entertainment Group, alongside DJ Guy Worden, Tessaphobia and DJ Paul Z. We work well together because we all bring a different sound and we learn from each other and have been our biggest supporters. When we get together and plan an event, the creativity is flowing and we are always satisfied with the final product.”

His ability to stay humble and learn from other DJs has helped him to elevate his skills. “There isn’t an event or party I can’t do. I would say I’m well-rounded. I can spin at the club or play at a wedding, quincenera, or whenever needed,” explains Sizzle. While his passion is Hip/Hop and Old School Rap, Sizzle likes to challenge himself to get the crowd into something they haven’t heard before such as dance remixes of Top-40 songs or Mash-Ups that you wouldn’t normally hear.

Working with Desert DJ Entertainment group, Sizzle says he gets his greatest satisfaction out of hosting events. They do everything from promoting, setting up, and performing - in contrast to a club, where you show up, play a set and that’s it. He is

on the planning committee for the “Terror at the Tack Room” Halloween show at the Tack Room Tavern in Indio next month. This year they are adding The Date Shed as a host to accommodate fans of EDM/Techno/House music.

One of the high lights of his young career was playing at Stagecoach Music Festival in the Bud Light tent last year. Sizzle met Country singer Lee Brice while spinning everything from country music to hip/hop for 8 hours a day.

a treat on Sunday night. Gina Carey, winner of the “Best Contemporary Artist” at the 2015 CV Music Awards, will be performing a free concert in celebration of her newest album, Can You Dig It.

Gina Carey’s 12 album, released in August, 2015, is reminiscent of a 70’s funk-soul style and an effort to revive “music of old with more substance.” Ask Carey about why she enjoys the genre and she will tell you, “not only was it fun, but I think the music connected better with listeners. Timeless music never goes out of style.” Carey describes Can You Dig It as a funky retro soul album that captures the sound of the late 70’s and early eighties with a modern twist.

On Sunday, September 13th, from 5pm to 7pm at Clementine Gourmet Marketplace & Café in Palm Desert, Carey will perform songs from Can You Dig It. Jamming along with the vocalist will be her husband, recording artist and former guitar player of “The Chi-lights,” John Carey, Theo Coakley of the 70’s funk band, “T-Connection,” Rosco Bastillios, and Ty Sticks on Drums. Carey performs only occasionally with this line-up of musicians. To see this incredible vocalist really stretch out with her own high-energy original material and the backing of stellar performers is a treat that only comes along once in a while and is not to be missed.

and “New Moon” feel like a mini-suite. Despite muscular guitar chords, a chunky back beat, boomerang bass lines and carnival-esque synths, “Fleeing...” feels slightly torpid.

The lyrics address an overwhelming sense of malaise; “This is not the way to start the day, feeling falling, dragging, drawling.” The last request to bring “Something/Anything” is either an appeal for some form of emotional palliative, or a desire to listen to Todd Rundgren’s 1972 masterpiece for some quick inspiration.

As the tempo increases the instrumentation spins in tighter concentric circles nearly colliding into “New Moon.” That song opens with a glorious sunburst of keys and Clapp’s slightly energized falsetto vocals. An off-kilter rhythm kicks in over a kaleidoscopic guitar groove. (It’s all very goo-goo-g’joob).

There’s a bit of an exhale as they take a moment to enjoy their achievements. “When I think of how we got here, all I see is dust and hard work/When I think of that progression I can see the way to heaven.”

Three songs, “Embers,” “9” and “Satellite Song” feel like the heart and soul of the record. “Embers” splits the difference between early ‘80s Synth Pop and sunny, early ‘70s Soft Rock. Keys tinkle, guitars jangle and Clapp’s vocals are slightly Glam-tastic.

Beginning with his sardonic opening quip, “I remember yesterday like it was yesterday,” the scene is set for a bittersweet break-up. Despite an offer to be “your sacred cow or just your

So Far delivered on the promise made by the debut, another hook-filled masterpiece, it garnered airplay on underrated TV series like “Felicity” and “Ed.” (Remember the lawyer who owned a bowling alley?) It also established the pattern of a new album every four years.

2005 saw the release of their most assured effort to date, Circling The Sun. By now Ocean Blue guitarist, Oed Ronne had been added to the line-up. Like clockwork 2020 appeared in 2009, at that point, Bob Vickers departed the band and was replaced by Gabriel Coan. Sun Moon, recorded at their own Mystery Lawn studio, came out in 2013.

Traveling to the last show of their Sun Moon tour, Allen and Jill were involved in a serious highway crash. Stopped in traffic, they were slammed by a drunk driver speeding at 60 mph. Remarkably, the couple walked away with no lasting injuries.

Perhaps, imbued with a sense of carpe diem, the band seized the day. Reconvening at the Mystery Lawn studio, well ahead of their usual schedule, to write and record their sixth album, Begin The Begone.

Begin… begins with the insistent “Head Cleaner.” A throbbing tom-tom beat rides roughshod over coruscated guitar riffs and Clapp’s anxious vocals. Suffering from a little mixed up confusion he longs for some romantic clarity. “If I travel with you, will you show me your true self/And the more I’m with you, the more you could change my life/Gimme

Anyone wanting to hear some quintessential California music should look no further than The Orange

Peels. The Bay Area band has been creating a pristine combo-platter of Baroque-Country-Folk-Pop for more than 20 years. It all began with Allen Clapp.

Growing up in Foster City, a tiny town between San Francisco and San Mateo, music was a constant companion. His mom and older sister taught him piano, he also studied violin.

By his teen years, Clapp had already cycled through a few nascent bands, with names like the Batmen, the Morsels, the Mummies and the Himalayans, (the latter featured future Counting Crows front man, Adam Duritz.)

During college, Clapp was half of the folky Goodfellows duo. They added bass, drums and harmonica and gigged around town variously as Huck, Hunk and Hulk. After that fell apart, he started recording solo. Armed with only a Radio Shack mic and a four-track cassette recorder he released a single through the tiny Four Letter Word label and that brought him to the attention of Bus Stop Records.

Clapp continued to record music under the moniker One Hundred Percent Chance Of Rain. A band in name only, the music was basically all him with a handful of bass parts played by his wife, Jill Pries. His melodic, albeit lo-fi Pop songs included gems like “Why Sting Is Such An Idiot,” (an answer song to the ex-Police front man’s solipsistic hit single, “If you Love Somebody, Set Them Free.”)

By 1994, Clapp was ready for a real band experience. Jill Pries became his fulltime bassist and he recruited old friends Larry Winther and Maz Kattuah to handle guitar and drums, respectively. Originally dubbed the Allen Clapp Orchestra, they were quickly re-christened the Orange Peels.

As the group was heading into the studio to record their debut, Maz Kattuah was replaced by drummer Bob Vickers. Square arrived in 1997 on the indie label, Minty Fresh. A shimmery slice of West Coast sunshine, the album was a breath of fresh air in an era of watered-down Grunge and bro-tastic Rap-Rock.

basket case” the writing is on the wall; “The fire’s flames blown, all you got left are embers, baby.” A piano coda ends the tune on a wistful note.

If “Pet Sounds”-era Beach Boys hooked up with Sergio Mendes and Buffalo Springfield, it might sound something like “9.” It opens with a hip-swiveling, accelerated Bossa Nova beat and then adds ringing, Countrified guitar and celestial synths. The lyrics obliquely reference the car accident Clapp and Pries miraculously walked away from, but the real focal point of the song is the spitfire guitar licks that flicker and flutter like a hummingbird on acid. The tune closes out with some winsome acoustic arpeggios.

Lush keyboards and breathy, ethereal vocals echo early ‘70s touchstones like Badfinger and “Wishing You Were Here” era Chicago. But “Satellite Song” is so much more, from the tart, hi-hat punctuation to the plangent piano notes that anchors the melody and especially the sparkling guitar solo that summons the spirit of George Harrison. The song is gossamer perfection. Keep the smelling salts close by for this one, you might actually swoon.

Two instrumentals, “Tidepool” and “Post & Beam” are smack in the middle of the record. The former is a lilting, minor-key waltz powered electric piano, spirally synths and a lone kick drum. It conjures up images of pastoral grace, and also recalls those “very special” montages in the “After School Special” TV movies. (It’s all very “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret”).

The latter is a cacophonous drum-centric track; kind of a latter day version of Led Zeppelin’s Bonham-riffic “Moby Dick.” Both tracks act as a musical sorbet, an aural palette cleanser if you will, in preparation for the grandeur of “9” and “Satellite Song.”

The album closes with “Wintergreen.” A sugar rush of acoustic guitars wash over piquant mandolin notes and a thumping bass drum, nearly camouflaging the lyrics’ pessimistic tone; “Seasons crashing into like waves upon the shore/Knock you down and take you for a ride.” But hard times, like the seasons, pass, and “summer” has them “feeling fine.” A hopeful end to an incandescent record.

Throughout their career, the Orange Peels have managed to strike a balance between musical ambition and comfortable familiarity. Begin The Begone improves upon that tradition. The band isn’t trying to set the world on fire, but with each album, their star burns a little brighter.

“BEGiN THE BEGONE” (MySTERy LAWN/MiNTy FRESH RECORDS)

The UN International Day of Peace (“Peace Day”) is observed around the world each year on September. 21st.

It is a day devoted to fostering the ideals of peace among all nations and all peoples. The theme of the 2015 Peace Day is “Partnerships for Peace — Dignity for All.” Participation in Peace Day is as simple as a kind word to a stranger, volunteering at a school or participating in a larger community event.

In anticipation of Peace Day the Palm Springs Art Museum will host a special event on Sunday, September 13th from 11 AM to 4:30 PM. The event is free to the public. Unity Foundation and The Art Miles Mural Project are producing the event. Unity Foundation (unityfoundation.org) has a 40-year history of promoting peace, cooperation and unity throughout the world. The Art Miles Mural Project (artmiles.org.) is an organization that has created more than 4,000 murals around the world.

The event will showcase films from The International Mural Art and Global Film Festival. The films were created by youth from around the world using the themes of peace and sustainability. The Art Miles Mural Project, the Peace Day Global Broadcast, and the Peace in the Streets Global Film Festival, KidFlix Global and the Tigerman Bully Prevention Campaign produced these films. The event will also include the creation of an interactive environmental mural by the Museum’s Art Camp students. The mural will be presented at the UN.

The Unity Foundation has its roots in Palm Springs. It was created by Palm Springs

resident Bill McCarthy. In 1975 he had a dream to bring together the political, spiritual, environmental and community organizations in San Francisco in a festival of Unity. The success of that festival was the beginning of the 40-year history of Unity Foundation. To date more than 1 million people have attended special events produced by Unity Foundation.

Unity has organized international media campaigns promoting Peace in Bosnia, A Program Providing Computers to Students in South Africa, The Americas Before Columbus Project Celebrating the History, Culture and Accomplishments of the Native Peoples of the Americas, and The United Peoples Assembly promoting the creation of a People’s Parliamentary Assembly at the United Nations. The foundation’s media campaigns have reached more than 500 million people globally.

“The mural project is exciting,” said Bill McCarthy, “because Art is universal. Most people can relate to one of the art forms – music, dance, and painting. Art is not bound by any one language. To bring the mural project to the Museum’s Art Camp allows our children to be a part of a global quest for peace and respect throughout the world. We hope that many will join us. The films are special as they show the world through the eyes of a child. What they see and what they show us is mesmerizing.”

What does Bill hope that public will learn from the event? “I hope people will see the promise of our young people captured forever in the art they create. If we teach them peace is attainable, that will be reflected in the optimism of their art. We are one unified by a desire for peace and acceptance.”

Interesting stuff!—for the new wine enthusiasts around town, trying wines from Spain, Portugal, Greece, and other

international wine destinations seem pretty easy to imagine. But for many of the seasoned vino lovers who just relish their California, Bordeaux, and Burgundy appetites, wine from outside the usual comfort zone, just doesn’t seem to play on their radar.

It’s a brave new wine world out there. And there is nothing to fear!—it’s just wine. So many reasonably priced “new” label and sexy wines are filling our shelves as we speak—so let’s get on it and talk-about-it-talk-about-it, taste and enjoy!

Out here in the desert, we’re always on the look-out for a refreshing quaff that can match brunch, or lunch, or dinner al fresco. Patio dining seems the norm to us way into November (actually, we carry on all winter long). European wines most often fit the bill, as they come from a great vino heritage where it continually plays out on the table with the meal—always complementing each other. There’s no culinary war going on to out-best the other, as in (spoken with your best Donald Trump impersonation) “Hey—my red Rhone can take down your saddle of beef anytime—anywhere!”

Speaking of seasoned vino-lovers, I’m sure we can all remember at least a couple of Portuguese wines back in the day, notably the rosés, Mateus and Lancers, each in their iconic bottle shapes. And that squat Mateus bottle always served as the candleholder du jour in the 60s and 70s. By the way—that same Mateus wine is making a marketing come-back this fall: It’s the same wine—but of course, the “squat bottle-look” is more modernized chic & sleek!

A new wave of Portuguese wine on our shores include a bright white, a riverside rosé, and a rousing red to meet up with our brunch, lunch, and patio party. I’ve already mentioned and recommended the white wine in a summer column where we facetiously played with a wine to take on a mountain hike in triple-digit weather!

You’ll remember of course the white being the crisp Vera Vinho Verde. The name means “green wine”, suggesting not the color but that they are intended to be enjoyed in their energetic youth. The Vinho Verde region in northwestern Portugal lies flush on the Atlantic Coast—you’ve seen the maps, it juts inland like a left-hand mitten. Porto, the center of port commerce, sits on its southwestern coastal edge, while the spectacular terraced vineyards of the Douro lie to the east of the region.

The wine exemplifies refreshment in a bottle with bright and complex citrus aromas of lime and pink grapefruit, hints of stone fruit, along with some slight effervescence where one seems to offer a toast with every quaff. It’s the bottle to have around for fun

Wonderful aromas of bright red berry and watermelon fruit with wafts of sea-breeze. On the palate, it’s light, fresh and delicate, with mouthwatering red fruit and refreshing acidity. This Nortico Rosé is the wine for all seasons and reasons. A sexy sipper on its own, it especially complements all manner of shellfish, seafood, and simple cheese dishes. And really—being a tasty dry rosé, it can pair with anything: hamburgers, chicken and whatever you’re grillin’.

And speaking of “sexy”, the label seals the deal. Reflective of the classic Portuguese Ceramic Tiles, a couple decorative bottles will energize the party and be the talk of the table: prepare yourself for the onslaught of bottle selfies.

Another traditional Portuguese wine that we aficionados have always pledged an allegiance to is Vintage Port. It was the very first “cult wine” in history. That pricy sweet wine of old where cigar-smoking actors play importance in their fantasy English movies—man, those were the days.

Hey—Vintage Port still exists, survives and revives and is one of the best dessert wines in the world. Incomparably great concentration of blue, black and brown fruit aromas and flavors, but, clothed with clinging saccharinity.

Now if you were to dare to think of this outstanding wine without sweetness—that’s

and wine games. De rigueur for your first-aid kit whenever someone is faint and withered by the heat: fresh, lively, zingy, zesty, at $12 a bottle or less, it’s so much cheaper than calling for the para-medic!

Our next recommendation is the dry Nortico Rosé, at around $14. For you geography enthusiasts, this is produced on the south bank of the Minho River in plots so small they are called jardins, or gardens. The area sees a lot of rainfall annually but the inland area is warmer than the coast, allowing for perfect maturation and balance in the fruit. Best known for producing light aromatic reds—locally called Palhete. This rosé evokes that style.

to say a “dry” wine, well welcome to the world of Pintas Character: made from a field blend of 30 different varieties which include the famed Port wine grapes such as Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, and Touriga Nacional. Causally speaking, this wine is like enjoying a dry Vintage Port—how wonderful is that!

This $40 2012 red blend vintage is rich, powerful, and delicious with both aromas and flavors showing notes of red, blue and black berries, black cherry, plums, black pepper and licorice. But at the same time it is fresh, velvety, with a balanced acidity and well integrated tannins that continue with a long, persistent finish. And it’s medium-bodied to pair well with a meal.

6. Public Shelters Your friendly cat could be taken in by

someone who thinks he’s a stray animal. They might take him to a public shelter where tragically about 90% of the cats are euthanized.

7. Songbird Conservation Cats are predators, and it is an instinctual

behavior for them to kill and eat birds and other small wildlife. Your well-fed pet may

deposit a dead bird as a present on your doorstep.

Ways to keep Kitty Happy Indoors - Cats are perfectly content to sit in the sunshine on a safe window ledge INSIDE your home. You can provide exercise with a supply of toys, a carpet covered cat tree, and a cat scratching post. Get your cat a buddy...there is nothing more joyful than two cats at play.

Here’s the best reason to keep your cat indoors rather than outside. The average life span of indoor cats is between twelve and seventeen years, while that of outdoor cats is about five years. a rural area where your pet cat was allowed to roam outside.

Today most cat rescue groups will require you to keep the cat you adopt from them indoors. Some people still think that cats are happier if they have the “freedom” to live outside. Here are some of the reasons to keep your cat inside, as much as you might think he would enjoy a romp out in the sunshine.

1. Outdoor cats are subject to predatorsCoyotes are the primary threat to felines

in the Coachella Valley. They are frequently spotted inside our gated country clubs and other residential communities. Stray dogs can also kill a cat.

2. Risk of Injury or DiseaseThousands of cats are killed every year

from cars. Other hazards on our landscape such as barb wire fencing, rodent traps, and poisons can cause grave injury or death. Cats like the sweet taste of anti-freeze, but it is extremely toxic and will result in death within hours. Some feline diseases are transmitted from other stray cats. Fleas, ticks and ringworm can be picked up outside.

3. Fights with other CatsCats are territorial animals, and injuries

from cat fights can run up some major veterinary bills. Their territorial battles can result in abscessed wounds which can be deadly if not treated.

4. Malicious IndividualsSad to say, there are people in our

community who are cruel and sadistic and would harm a stray available animal. With Halloween approaching, cat owners need to be even more vigilant.

It’s a strange and horrific phenomenon when mothers kill their kids. To think the nurturer, the heart and soul of a

home could, would, deliberately murder her children rocks the fabric of the universe. Laura Lippman’s Hush Hush (William Morrow, 303 pages) reveals the challenges of parenting and the stress of raising human beings in her eleventh Tess Monaghan novel.

Former journalist turned P.I., Tess has been hired by her lawyer uncle-in-law to do a security job for Melisandre Harris Dawes, his infamous client who has returned to Baltimore after a decade of self-exile in Europe.

Melisandre claimed insanity after she locked her three-month-old baby girl in her car on a hot summer day and watched her die. There was a mistrial and the judge ordered her into treatment. She relinquished custody of her two living daughters, just four and seven years old at the time, to her then husband Stephen Dawes.

Beautiful, brilliant and super wealthy, Melisandre is making a documentary about her return and hopeful reunion with her now teen daughters. She is also receiving mysterious cryptic hate mail.

Have recent events in the stock market got you down and feeling blue? Is it a bull or a bear market, just a correction

or a full blown crash? If you are like me (and millions of others) it is not the first time your heart sank when you checked the value of your stock portfolio online… but it could be the last! For most of us the single largest investment that we will make in our lifetime (not including our children!) will be our home. Unfortunately too few of us think of “investing” in a second or third home and so our extra investment cash or money socked away in our IRA and 401K retirement accounts gets put into the stock market. Well I for one am getting darn tired of the ups and downs of a stock market that seem only to favor the insiders on Wall Street. Also, the idea that my entire investment stock portfolio and retirement accounts could be erased with a single keystroke on some broker or government computer does not help me to sleep well at night either! It’s time to change our thinking about how to safely invest our savings into something more than just a piece of paper or an electronic statement, the value of which is completely beyond our control.

Before I share some more thoughts on this subject, let’s take a quick look at the real estate sales activity for the Coachella Valley for the month of August. At the end of July we learned that we were falling further behind last

When Mr. Dawes ends up dead, the case burns up the news and Tess seeks to solve the mystery of his murder. Street savvy and intuitive, Tess uncovers the killer and this time there will be no case for insanity.

This is the first of the series I’ve read and I liked the character of Tess Monaghan. She’s a regular gal, smart and sassy. She’s doing her best to be a good mom while working long hours on a stressful, dangerous job.

Tess and Crow, her boyfriend and father of her child, approach child rearing differently and she constantly wonders if she is cut out to be a mom. When Tess discovered she was

year’s total number of sales, but we had hoped that increased pending sales would result in higher August closings and help us to catch up. Here’s what happened.

According to the Desert Area MLS (as of 09/01/15) there were 700 pendings of residential properties here in the Coachella Valley in August. There were 718 pendings in the previous month (July) which is typical of our summer sales pattern. Looking at the pendings from August of last year (2014) there were only 435 pendings. So this is another year over year increase in pendings activity for 2015 and continued improvement in sales activity over last year. In July there were 689 solds and in August we had 605 solds. Compared to last year in August, we sold 607 homes. This number is extremely disappointing as it once again keeps us behind last year’s numbers for total sales volume. Though the year over year gap is small, it does not make up for the lower sales volume from the previous months in 2015. Here again, higher pending activity is not showing up as higher sold activity. I am hopeful that this is due to delays in closings resulting from financing and other challenges present in today’s market. September could post a huge year over year gain in closings… but we’ll just have to wait and see if that occurs next month. We need a really good month to reverse our downward trend in sales volume

pregnant, there wasn’t time to marry Crow and they never got around to it. But after the dust settles in the story, she and Crow finally tie the knot. Tess realizes she’s not such a bad mom after her experience with Melisandre.

There are several mysteries unfolding in Hush Hush. Author Lippman adds layers with every new chapter. She uses documentary transcripts, days and time stamps as different characters join in the narrative. The changing voices complicate the plot as the story builds.

I liked the teenage daughters Alanna and Ruby. Seeing reality through their young eyes was dramatic as they struggled to cope and understand their parents, themselves and their strange world.

Lippman writes with authority and insight when it comes to her female characters. The women are multifaceted and complex. Young and old, the ladies in this novel consider and question their role and place as women. They assert their power and discover their weaknesses.

Imbedded in Hush Hush are the challenges of motherhood. Several women, including Tess, debate the role, obligation and tools to do the job well. They wonder if they are equipped and question their own sanity. Are they bad people if they don’t want or like kids? Is it fair to give up your life for the one you brought into the world? Knowing the answer doesn’t make motherhood any easier.

In the end, the story becomes convoluted and the mysteries wear thin. The legalese

that has continued through most of 2015.Our inventory of homes for sale dropped

only slightly this month with 3,657 homes available as of August 1, 2015 compared to only 3,611 as of September 1, 2015. That’s a huge stabilization of our inventory with 754 MORE homes on the market today when compared to the same time last year. This will take the pressure off for prices to increase and I expect this trend to continue through the end of the year. Typically more homes get placed on the market in anticipation of the upcoming “selling” season and our inventory increases. Combining a falling stock market, a strong US dollar, little or no wage appreciation with the possibility of higher interest rates and we may actually see prices in the Coachella Valley come down by the end of the year.

As an investor in the stock market it seems that we have two options. Buy a stock and hope the value goes up and then sell it at a profit or buy a stock that pays an annual dividend. Dividends are usually pennies on the dollar, but none the less they reward us with a little income while we wait for the stock to go up. We have little or no control over the stock’s value or the amount of the dividend that stock pays but it costs one nothing to just hold the stock. On the other hand, if one purchases a second home as a rental you can hire a property manager to rent and manage the income and expenses and depending upon if you use a loan or not to purchase the home, you can usually generate a significant

But, P.I. Monaghan is a fun character. I got that her life hasn’t been easy and that she has worked hard for what she has without having read the other books in the series. I look forward to Tess’s next case and her life as a wife and mother. Let’s hope her maternal instincts are just as good as her investigative instincts.

There’s an incredible scene Tomlin shares with fellow septuagenarian Sam Elliot, who plays a mysterious old friend from her past that may be able to help Sage. Their lives were connected once and their reunion is revealing and finally jolting. But it’s their performances that you will remember as transparent and true.

I loved the revelation of Elle’s backstory as the pair make unannounced visits to her friends and lovers during the course of a single day. Yes, it’s a character driven, highly sentimental film. And yes, the audience is manipulated. But so what? Isn’t that part of what story telling is all about? Tomlin’s Elle is a super hero and Tomlin is at the top of her game inhabiting her. I didn’t mind the atmosphere of melancholy at the recognition that time passes for all of us. That sadness is tempered with big laughs. Also, I never considered that there was a message in this story other than Elle and Sage were honestly dealing with choices they made in the past. Time passes for all of us, but bonding and non-judgmental love matters most. Right? Don’t miss this little, low-budget gem of a movie. My heart was moved. Now playing.

films connect on a visceral level, even when you have a pretty good idea of where it’s all headed. I wish I could say this one did. Matthew Fox, Jeffrey Donovan and young Quinn McColgan star in this little horror entry from writer-director Miguel Angel Vivas.

Shot in Budapest under the working title WELCOME TO HARMONY, it’s set mostly on an isolated cabin in a wintry landscape where there’s a lot of talk of personal issues among the principals: a father (Donovan), his 9 year-old daughter (McColgan)) and an estranged friend (Fox). Oh, there’s a cute little dog in the mix. Apparently the rest of humanity has been infected and are in

of writer-director Paul Weitz’s dramatic comedy about a woman helping her pregnant -- and broke -- granddaughter get an abortion.

We meet poet Elle (Tomlin) as she’s breaking up with her much younger girlfriend. That’s when feisty Sage (Julia Garner) drops in. Elle has just paid off her credit cards, cut them up in a celebration and made a wind chime. So she’s temporarily as broke as Sage.

It took a few scenes for the film to really grab me, but before the middle of this compact (about 75 minutes) movie unspooled, I was very invested and engaged with Tomlin and her quest as the two cruised in Elle’s 1955 Dodge Royal (I heard it was Tomlin’s actual car) around town visiting various places and acquaintances asking for help raising the necessary $600 for Sage’s procedure -- before 6 PM.

Tomlin is as good as she has ever been. Maybe better. I predict she will be nominated for an Academy Award©. Weitz knows Tomlin and her character and has provided the actor with some wonderful dialogue that Tomlin delivers with expressions and nuance that conveys far more meaning than what is on the page.

And after both men get bitten by the surprisingly fit, fleet-footed blind zombies do they realize if they have any chance at surviving, they have to join forces and stop fighting each other. And finally, that’s when we are finally rewarded by full-on, modest-budget, zombie siege, such as it is. I really liked the kid actor Quinn McCoglin. Keep an eye on her. Phase IV FILMS. DVD

From writer-director Andrew Bujalski, this surprisingly witty romantic comedy, set in the fitness-obsessed world of personal training stars perfectly cast Guy Pierce, Cobie Smulders and Kevin Corrigan and co-stars Giovanni Ribisi, Anthony Michael Hall, Constance Zimmer and Brooklyn Decker. The story begins when a recently transplanted New Yorker (Corrigan) -- cynical, newly divorced, rich and miserable -- visits his local gym. He quickly becomes entwined with the gym’s charismatic, self-styled guru owner Trevor (Pearce) and no-nonsense acerbic trainer Kat (Smulders). Soon, their lives are inextricably knotted – both personally and professionally. I loved this full of life, utterly unpredictable, romantic comedy. It’s funny as hell. Magnolia. Blu-ray.

the August unemployment number of 5.1% as the best results

since March, 2008. While the economy is doing significantly better than at any point during the Obama Administration, a deeper look shows that fewer people are ‘participating’ in the economy. In fact, only 62.6% of working age adults are actually working, 3.5% lower than March, 2008. For comparison, the US participation rate for working age men is 87% versus 96% in Japan, 93% in France and Germany, and 92% in the United Kingdom.

Of the new jobs created since the Great Recession, most were in low wage positions with many people working one or two part-time jobs versus one full-time job. This has been great for corporate profits and stock values but has caused the recovery of the US economy to be slower and less robust than previous recoveries. This only makes sense as two-thirds of the US economy is driven by consumer spending. If consumers are making less, it is difficult for them to spend more. Additionally, the cost of things like food, healthcare, and, until recently, energy have gone up substantially for the last seven years forcing consumers to make harder decisions when spending their

other companies to engage in similar tactics which makes our local economy and the US economy as a whole weaker.

Wal-Mart is not alone in its exploitation of workers and the financial condition of its shoppers - Wal-Mart is simply the best at it. Of the 123 million workers in the United States, 1.1% work for this company.

So which companies are some of the

limited funds. To see a more robust recovery, it is

incumbent upon each of us to spend our dollars wisely. This does not mean buying the lowest cost product possible but buying goods and services from companies that pay workers living wages while sourcing their products from US manufacturers.

As an example, when you buy something at Wal-Mart, you are actually making your community poorer. This is because the majority of products sold at Wal-Mart are produced overseas. This means that a large percentage of your dollars are sent overseas. Next, the average worker at Wal-Mart is paid less than $10/hour and receives $1,000/year in government assistance to live. This means that your tax dollars subsidize Wal-Mart operations. With operating profits of more than $500 million per week, those monies are then concentrated in the hands of a few executives and large shareholders like the Walton family. By shopping at Wal-Mart, your dollars are leaving your community and being sent to places like China and our countries’ most affluent.

While you and others may need to shop at Wal-Mart because of your personal financial condition, it is important to know that shopping at places like these, force

and Pizza Hut. Most of their workers earn less than $1,000/month and qualify for government assistance. Wages at Yum! Brands are typical in the fast food industry and include Burger King, McDonald’s, Red Lobster, Olive Garden and many others. The one exception is In-n-Out Burger which pays many of their store managers more than $100,000/year.

While Target, Macy’s and Starbuck’s have better reputations than many of their competitors, their wage structures are very similar. The same can be said for Sears, TJ Maxx, Marshall’s and many other large box stores.

To keep things in perspective, if the minimum wage rate would have kept up with the rise in executive salaries over the last twenty-five years, the minimum wage would be $23/hour.

If you want to make a difference, shop at local stores run by local people while eating at local restaurants owned by local people. If you do this, most of the money you spend stays in your community which helps in creating better local employment opportunities.

FanDuel and DraftKings, fantasy sports draw huge interest. The Fantasy Sports Trade Association estimated people spent $15 billion last year on various forms of the concept. That number likely is higher now. Legally, fantasy sports are not considered wagering. Practically, many see it differently.

“It’s real gambling,” said New Jersey lawyer Dennis Drazin, who is fighting for legalization in his state. “I don’t think it’s something else.”

The answer is no, thanks to a loophole in the 2006 Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. The law makes it illegal to transfer funds to online sports books outside the country — which happens to be all of them — but exempts fantasy sports because they are considered games of “skill” as opposed to “chance.”

Many gamblers would beg to differ.‘INEVITABLE’“Gambling is something that is a lot more

prevalent and accepted today than it was 20 years ago. It is more prevalent and accepted throughout the world.”

The speaker was Dan Spillane, NBA vice president and assistant general counsel. Spillane helped Silver draft what eventually might be seen as a landmark statement in the campaign to legalize sports betting.

Writing in the Times, Silver applied a full-court press to the 1992 law that prevents legal sports betting, the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act. The NFL and the other major sports leagues lobbied hard for its passage.

But times have changed, Silver noted. Acknowledging the vast sums illegally wagered in the U.S. and the legality of sports betting outside the country, and insisting on strict federal control, he wrote “the laws on sports betting should be changed.”

“I believe that sports betting should be brought out of the underground and into the sunlight where it can be appropriately monitored and regulated,” wrote Silver.

Several NBA owners, notably former Mt. Lebanon resident Mark Cuban of the Dallas Mavericks, joined the chorus. Then Manfred went against his old boss, Selig, affirming the same viewpoint on behalf of MLB.

Cuban said he believes legalized gambling nationwide is “inevitable” in five to 10 years. “It’s time to bring it out of the closet,” he said.

Welcome to the dialogue, Commissioner. The conversation has begun, in earnest. An energized debate over legalizing sports betting in the United States is taking place, and experts believe it could become reality in as soon as five years.

“I do believe it’s coming,” said Sean Sullivan, G.M. of The Meadows Racetrack and Casino in North Strabane.

“No doubt about it,” said Las Vegas bookmaker Jimmy Vaccaro, “the walls are crumbling.”

John McCain in January said Congress should hold hearings on legalized sports betting, and the American Gaming Association, a national trade group representing the casino industry, for the first time formed a task force to study the subject. In November, a New York Times piece by NBA commissioner Adam Silver calling for legal sports betting caused waves.

“I think everyone realizes there has been a lot of discussion about this,” said task force head Sara Rayme, the AGA senior vice president for public affairs. “Everyone is questioning if the status quo works right now.”

Sports betting is legal in four states — Nevada, Oregon, Delaware and Montana — but confined mainly to Nevada. To the anti-gambling forces, what happens in Vegas (and within state lines) should stay there. But that’s hardly reality. The AGA conservatively estimated bettors illegally wagered $138.9 billion on sports last year. Other estimates reach as high as $380 billion, including $9 billion on March Madness (including office pools) and $3.8 billion on this year’s Super Bowl.

On both occasions, opponents — that is, the NFL, NHL, NBA, MLB and the NCAA — managed to send it back to the Circuit Court of Appeals, which ruled against the bill the first time. It is expected to return another ruling by the end of the month.

Meanwhile, technology — primarily the Internet and smartphones — has made it easy to place a bet with any one of about 200 online sports books outside the U.S. This is illegal. However, to anyone’s knowledge, no bettor has been prosecuted.

It refers to what may happen at the end of a long journey, when that last stretch you’ve got to traverse seems to take forever. You’re so close to home; you’re imagining the comfort and rest that will soon be yours. But as you cross the “wheady mile,” you must navigate your way through one

further plot twist or two. There’s a delay or complication that demands more effort just when you want to be finished with the story. Be strong, Libra. Keep the faith. The wheady mile will not, in fact, take forever. (Thanks to Mark Forsyth and his book Horologicon.)

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Trying improbable and unprecedented combinations is your specialty right now. You’re willing and able to gamble with blends and juxtapositions that no one else would think of, let alone propose. Bonus: Extra courage is available for you to call on as you proceed. In light of this gift, I suggest you brainstorm about all the unifications that might be possible for you to pull off. What conflicts would you love to defuse? What inequality or lopsidedness do you want to fix? Is there a misunderstanding you can heal or a disjunction you can harmonize?

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Is feeling good really as fun as everyone seems to think? Is it really so wonderful to be in a groove, in love with life, and in touch with your deeper self? No! Definitely not! And I suspect that as you enter more fully into these altered states, your life will provide evidence of the inconveniences they bring. For example, some people might nag you for extra attention, and others may be jealous of your success. You could be pressured to take on more responsibilities. And you may be haunted by the worry that sooner or later, this grace period will pass. I’M JUST KIDDING, SAGITTARIUS! In truth, the minor problems precipitated by your blessings won’t cause any more anguish than a mosquito biting your butt while you’re in the throes of ecstatic love-making.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): In this horoscope, we will use the Socratic method to stimulate your excitement about projects that fate will favor in the next nine months. Here’s how it works: I ask the questions, and you brainstorm the answers. 1. Is there any part of your life where you are an amateur but would like to be a professional? 2. Are you hesitant to leave a comfort zone even though remaining there tends to inhibit your imagination? 3. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): The story of my life features more than a few fiascos. For example, I got fired from my first job after two days. One of my girlfriends dumped me without any explanation and never spoke to me again. My record label fired me and my band after we made just one album. Years later, these indignities still carry a sting. But I confess that I am also grateful for them. They keep me humble. They serve as antidotes if I’m ever tempted to deride other people for their failures. They have helped me develop an abundance of compassion. I mention this personal tale in the hope that you, too, might find redemption and healing in your own memories of frustration. The time is right to capitalize on old losses.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): It’s never fun to be in a sticky predicament that seems to have no smart resolution. But the coming days could turn out to be an unexpectedly good time to be in such a predicament. Why? Because I expect that your exasperation will precipitate an emotional cleansing, releasing ingenious intuitions that had been buried under repressed anger and sadness. You may then find a key that enables you to reclaim at least some of your lost power. The predicament that once felt sour and intractable will mutate, providing you with an opportunity to deepen your connection with a valuable resource.

Most people are familiar with the slang term “Aha.” It is described as a moment of sudden

realization, inspiration, insight, recognition, or comprehension as defined by Merriam-Webster. Oprah Winfrey has coined the term, “Aha,” and you will often hear her recognize her own relevant moments. You may also refer to your newfound insight as an epiphany or a Eureka moment.

“Aha” moments are powerful and can be life altering. It’s when you really get the message and receive definitive clarity to an unanswered question or circumstance. You can and will feel the power when you have this tender experience. It is exciting but can also slap you in the face with a true dose of reality. It is how and when you implement your realization or inspirational moment that will make a difference in your life. Have you ever had a moment of lucid comprehension and ignored the message? Why did you ignore the message? Were you in denial? Did the message repeat itself? Did you tuck it away in a place you thought it may be safe and choose to visit it in your own time? Be truthful. The answer is, YES! Often times realizing something you have been sugar coating to your own desires isn’t so sweet after all. Call it a gentle reminder of you “Aha” moment.

Realization will present itself at any time. Your enlightening moment may arrive when you are least expecting inspiration or insight. This will be your sweet spot. I love this experience. The journey becomes that much

sweeter when you can recognize what has been revealed.

On a personal note, the puzzle pieces to my life used to be scattered. This is the same for everyone. As of late the pieces to my puzzle are fitting into the correct grooves. I am witnessing a beautiful piece of artwork unveil itself. This is the same for you. Isn’t this exciting? When we are in the routine of our daily lives it may be challenging to understand why certain things happen or why particular people have crossed our paths. Lately, more often than not, I am recognizing these breakthrough moments.

Here are a few of my inspirational and insightful moments. More than fifteen years ago I had a foot injury that debilitated me from any physical movement for more than six months. Post my rehabilitation I was encouraged to take a yoga class. Now, I own a yoga studio. Never in a million years would I have imagined my foot injury would lead me to be an entrepreneur. Also, after spending more than a decade in Arizona, I never envisioned moving back to California. Since returning to California I reengaged past friendships and made new connections with some incredible people.

Remain cognizant of your surroundings. I have also learned to question everything. When you dive in and dig deeper you may experience more “Aha” moments than anticipated.

Seek and you will find. Remain open-minded. Be patient. You have yet to capture your most important moments.

A client of mine, Liz, carved out some time from her busy day to have a leisurely lunch with a friend. As it

turned out, mealtime was anything but fun and relaxing. She successfully dodged a few phone calls, but eventually had to take one from a customer in crisis, so lunch turned into damage control. Luckily her friend was more sympathetic than frustrated as she observed Liz conducting business.

Prior to our session this week, Liz did some excellent self-coaching. She came to the realization that due to the huge upsurge in her business (a good thing) trying to squeeze in time for friends and other activities had to be put on hold. Liz told me she decided to “push the pause button” until the rush was over and the dust settled. I gave her credit for single-handedly overcoming the Superwoman Syndrome. For both men and women, the fallacy of thinking we can be all things to all people is a fairy tale we tell ourselves.

Often I coach and write about the value of white space on our calendars, however, this missive does not carry that particular theme. My message today is about what we lose. We risk more than causing our stress level to skyrocket when we take on too much.

Consider how inability to plan accurately impacts others. In Liz’s case, her friend showed

no negative reaction to having her lunch hour trumped by multiple phone calls. It is possible, however, she was thinking that eating a sandwich at her desk and getting her own work done would have been a more valuable use of her time.

Liz was wise enough to know early on that pressing the pause button is a prudent move. Not doing so inflicts discomfort on others. Most of us have experienced the pain of watching an individual step up to the plate promising to handle a project, only to receive a panicked plea for help at the eleventh hour because he or she over-promised. Consequently, we end up upsetting our schedules to assist in the bail out.

Ever been on the receiving end of a meeting interrupted by a latecomer because his schedule was too jammed to report on time? What happens is we tend to lose respect for friends, colleagues and co-workers who beg forgiveness by claiming overload.

Rather than risk losing your credibility by wasting the time of others, push the pause button. Keep your reputation and honor intact by trimming down the urge to overload your schedule.
