Mondi’s leading brand for colour laser printing, Color Copy, is fully CO2 neutral, from cradle to Mondi factory gate, since 2010. The introduction of NAUTILUS® Super-White CO2 neutral and all high-speed inkjet papers with a CO2 neutral option marks a natural progression in Mondi’s strong focus on the responsible management and use of natural resources. Mondi´s approach can be summed up in three words: Analyse, Minimize, Neutralise!

Reducing our carbon footprintWe are able to calculate the total carbon footprint of each product, at each stage of the supply chain, to determine the effect of our GHG-reducing activities at every stage. We provide detailed product carbon foot-print infor mation, including a computer-based product carbon footprint calculator, based on the 10 principles of the Confe de ration of European Paper Industry (CEPI), for all our products.

Our voluntary contribution to climate neutrality Since the introduction of the Kyoto Protocol, fighting global warming, emission trading and emission offsetting has gained in prominence. It is important to distinguish between obligatory emission trading and the voluntary market.

Obligatory emission trading countries that do not fulfil their CO2 reduction targets can buy CO2 certificates for compensation. The same procedure is valid for compa-nies producing in those countries if they exceed their CO2 allocations.

Verified emission reductions (VERs) are primarily used for voluntarily balancing CO2 emissions. VERs enable indus-tries and individuals to voluntarily compensate for their emissions or provide an additional contribution to fight climate change by offsetting emissions.

How are emissions of CO2 neutral products compensated?We neutralize emissions from our paper from cradle to Mondi factory gate by supporting the following project: Hydropower emissions reduction project in Brazil, prov-ince Santa Catarina.

By replacing fossil fuels and preventing the reconstruction of fossil fuel power plants, the project annually avoids the emission of 290,976 tons of CO2-equivalents and is a Veri-fied Carbon Standard.

Why not compensate for emissions in Europe?Climate change is a global problem. Climate neutrality is based on the principle that greenhouse gas emissions have a damaging effect on the climate – globally. In terms

Sunlight warms the earth‘s surface and is reflected in the form of infrared rays.1 Green house gases which are emitted

through the incineration of fossil fuels retain infrared rays and re-emit them on the earth causing the global temperature to rise.

of climate protection the exact origins of the emissions are irrelevant as are the specific locations for emission avoid-ance. The Kyoto protocol aims to support projects in de-veloping countries. Mondi supports those countries that are most affected by climate change and where you can achieve higher result with your investment. We also invest in energy efficiency and biomass projects in our opera-tions in Europe and all over the world.

How to get to a CO2 neutral product?First Step: Calculation of all CO2 emissions produced in the product’s life cycle, known as the Product Car-bon Footprint. This calculation was done together with the Environmental consultancy ClimatePartner and in accordance with CEPI’s 10 toes standard for carbon footprint calculation. The Product Carbon Footprint cal-culation is cradle to gate, which means that all steps in production of the product are taken into account until the product leaves our mill gate.

Second Step: Purchase credits from verified emis sions reduction projects to offset the remaining CO2 emissions from the production. By doing so you support the reali-zation of projects, which focus on renewable energy and sustainable development initiatives that other wise would not be sufficiently financed and could not be imple-mented.

Result: Products can be called CO2 neutral or climate neutral, when the CO2 footprint has been calculated and compensated by purchasing CO2 credits from verified emissions reduction projects.

Thank You for your contribution to our voluntary climate protection!With the help of our voluntary CO2 neutral product offering in 2016 we have compensated 22,735 tonnes of CO2, which is comparable to 13,489 economy flights between Frankfurt and New York.
