CO2 valorisation: CO2 to produce bicarbonate

• First idea demo on CO2 capture in 2008

• Twence uses sodium-bicarbonate (SBC) for reducing acid gas emissions (Cl, SO2)

• SBC could be produced by sodium-carbonate and CO2

• Overall reaction:

(1 ton of carbonate provides for 1.6 ton of bicarbonate)

CO2 valorisation: CO2 to produce bicarbonate

• Advantages:

– Economics:

• 1 ton of carbonate needed for 1.6 ton of SBC

• Saving on transportation costs

– Environment:

• CO2 emission reduction

– Strategy:

• Sodium-carbonate is a commodity

• Towards zero-emission waste treatment

• Introducing CO2 capture and mineralisation into practice

A. Roeloffzen IRRC 5 - 6 September 2016 - Vienna 10

Process development

• Innovations needed:

• New solvent to capture CO2 from WtE Plants

• SBC production using pure CO2

• New SBC slurry injection system

• Using SBC-slurry for Flue Gas Treatment

A. Roeloffzen IRRC 5 - 6 September 2016 - Vienna 11
