It’s that time of year again.  Mark your calendars, as you will not want to miss this event! We are fired up and thrilled to be upholding our “Shop Til You Drop” Marketplace event again this year.  Grab the entire family and head out to the Berry Center on September 8th.  There will be something for everyone to enjoy, even your pet.  See you there!

CWC is a service organization that gives back to the community.  This means that all funds raised will go right back to the community in the form of scholarships for graduating high school seniors, at Lone Star College, Cy-Fair and grants to other non-profits in our community, as well.

Membership into the Cy-Fair Women’s Club is open to all ladies in Northwest Houston/Cypress neighborhoods.  Currently we meet the first Thursday of most months at West Houston Church of Christ.  Our meetings begin with social time and refreshments at 7:00p.m. immediately followed by a program at 7:30p.m.  The church is located at the corner of Queenston and West Road.

Our monthly meetings are not only educational and enjoyable, but they develop lasting fellowships.  We look forward to meeting you there!  If you have any questions about our club or need directions to the church, please contact Susan McLeroy, Membership Chair at [email protected].

Thank you,Rosie Serrano

COLES CONNECTIONAre Your Business and Home Ready for Hurricane Season?

Find out with Anthony Yanez at the Sept. 27 CYFEN meetingWhat precautions should you take to protect your home and

business during hurricane season? Find out with KPRC’s Anthony Yanez in his presentation titled “Hurricane Preparedness-Business and Home” at the Cy-Fair Express Network (CYFEN) luncheon Sept. 27.

Yanez has done it all in the news business - photography, editing, reporting, anchoring and sports - but he found his true passion in weather. And this meteorologist, who has covered severe weather since his first day July 15, 2003 at KPRC with Hurricane Claudette, said there is never a dull forecast in Houston as he deals with oppressive heat, severe thunderstorms, tornadoes and hurricanes.

All are welcome to attend the monthly meetings of CYFEN, which are held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. (with the program beginning promptly at 11:30 a.m.) the fourth Thursday of the month at the Sterling Country Club, 16500 Houston National Blvd.

Bring business cards for networking. The meeting cost is $25 with advanced reservations made by the Friday prior to the meeting and $30 at the door. For information on CYFEN, which is part of the American Business

Each of these events include numerous hours spent planning and preparing foods such as candy, pies, cookies, stuffing, and mashed potatoes with gravy. Not only do the fall months bring holiday foods, the changing of the seasons to the cooler fall months make it easier to pack on pounds that can be conveniently hidden under bulky winter clothing.

Start by knowing your numbers, so you can be informed and prepared. People with numbers in the unfavorable range should try to do as much as possible to lower their total cholesterol, LDL, and triglycerides and to raise their HDL. • For adults, 30 minutes of moderate physical activity daily and for

those aged 6-17, at least one hour of physical activity each day.• Maintain a healthy weight - Moderately active females need about

2,000 calories a day and moderately active males need about 2,400 to maintain a healthy weight. If you are trying to lose weight, decrease this number by roughly 500 calories per day.

• Don't smoke. • Eat foods high in fiber and nutrients and low in saturated fat and

cholesterol. So what can you eat? Changing your diet to lower your cholesterol

isn’t hard; incorporating a few new, relatively painless habits into your routine can make a big difference. As long as your numbers aren’t in the unfavorable range, you don’t necessarily have to swear off cheeseburgers and French fries forever, but they shouldn’t be part of your regular diet.

Here are some quick and easy cooking tips that will help you lower the cholesterol in your food: • Use lean cuts of meat with little visible fat. For beef, use the round,

chuck, sirloin, or loin; for pork, use the tenderloin or loin chop; for

lamb, use cuts from the leg, arm, and loin.• Buy “choice” or “select” grades, which have less fat than “prime”

does. Use lean or extra lean ground beef.• Broil rather than pan-fry your hamburger, lamb chops, pork chops,

and steak. Place meat on a wire rack to allow fat to drain when cooking. Instead of basting with drippings, keep meat moist with wine, fruit juices, or an acceptable oil-based marinade.

• Prepare stews, boiled meat, and soup stock in advance, refrigerate overnight, then remove the hardened fat from the top.

• Remove skin from chicken and turkey before cooking or eating.• Limit processed meats like sausage, bologna, salami, and hot dogs.

They tend to be high in calories, saturated fat, and sodium.• Limit organ meats like liver, sweetbreads, kidney, and brains, which

are very high in cholesterol. • Eat broiled, baked, grilled, or boiled seafood, which is lower in total

fat and saturated fat than most meat and poultry.• Cook vegetables in a little vegetable oil and add herbs instead of

butter.• Make cream sauces, soups, mashed potatoes, and scalloped potatoes

with low-fat or non-fat milk.• Use canola, safflower, sunflower, soybean, or olive oil instead of

butter, lard, and shortening.• Substitute egg whites for whole eggs. The cholesterol in eggs comes

from the yolks.• Replace the oil in muffins, cookies, and cakes with pureed fruits

or veggies. • Replace the breadcrumbs in your meatloaf with uncooked oatmeal.• Use brown rice instead of white rice, and try whole-grain pasta.

With these diet and lifestyle changes your cholesterol will decrease, allowing your blood to flow freely through your arteries, bathing your heart and brain in oxygen.

Alzheimer's Assocation Walk to End Alzheimer's® Engages And Inspires Northwest Houston

The Alzheimer’s Association is inviting Northwest Houston residents to unite in a movement to reclaim the future for millions by participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Vintage Park, 114 Vintage Park Blvd., Houston, TX 77070 will be the site of Walk on September 22 at 7:30 a.m.

Walk to End Alzheimer’s is more than a walk. It is an experience for about 1000 participants in Northwest Houston who will learn about Alzheimer’s disease and how to get involved with this critical cause, from advocacy opportunities, the latest in Alzheimer’s research and clinical trial enrollment to support programs and services.  Each walker will also join in a meaningful ceremony to honor those affected by Alzheimer’s disease.

Alzheimer’s disease is a growing epidemic and is now the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death. As baby boomers age, the number of individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease will rapidly escalate, increasing well beyond today’s estimated 5.4 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s. In addition to the 5K/3.1 miles, participants will enjoy a fun welcoming ceremony and warm up accompanied by a DJ and a special tribute to those who have experienced or are experiencing Alzheimer’s. Start or join a team today at alz.org/walk

There has never been a greater need for citizens in the Northwest

Houston area to join in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease by participating in Walk to End Alzheimer’s.” said Kiri Cook Soprano, an Alzheimer’s Association Outreach Coordinator. “Funds raised will provide care and support services to the 340,000 residents of Texas living with Alzheimer’s, while also contributing to advancing critically needed research.”

ABOUT THE ALZHEIMER’S ASSOCIATION WALK TO END ALZHEIMER’S:

The Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. Since 1989, the Alzheimer’s Association mobilized millions of Americans in the Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk®; now the Alzheimer’s Association is continuing to lead the way with Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Together, we can end Alzheimer’s – the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death.

ABOUT THE ALZHEIMER’S ASSOCIATION:The Alzheimer’s Association is the world’s leading voluntary health

organization in Alzheimer care, support and research. Our mission is to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health.

EARLY DETECTION OF GLAUCOMA CAN SAVE EYESIGHTAnnual eye exams should include screenings for glaucoma, even for

younger adults, because early detection can prevent long-term damage to sight, said ophthalmologists at Baylor College of Medicine. The biggest problem with glaucoma is that it's a silent disease, a sneak thief of sight," said Dr. Silvia Orengo-Nania, professor of ophthalmology in the Baylor Eye Clinic at BCM. "You could have visual damage occurring over time and not know it. Once damage occurs, it is irreversible and you will not be able to get any vision back that you have lost. This is why screening early is critical." Glaucoma usually occurs when increased pressure in the eye slowly destroys the optic nerve, damaging your ability to see, Orengo-Nania said. Approximately 2 million people in the United States are visually impaired by glaucoma. It is one of the leading causes of blindness. Treatment can help slow down, but not reverse impaired vision, Orengo-Nania saidSUMMER IDEAL TIME FOR ANNUAL SCHOOL PHYSICALS

The perfect time to schedule school-required physicals is during the summer. A pre-participation physical exam (PPE) should be performed at least six weeks before preseason practice in order to avoid overbooked doctor¹s offices, but more importantly to allow time to correct or rehabilitate any detected problems. "If procrastination is due to fear that a health problem will keep them off the team, that fear is usually

HEALTH BRIEFS - September 2012unwarranted," said Dr. Julie Jones of Baylor College of Medicine. Research shows less than 2 percent of athletes are denied clearance to play sports due to the PPE. The exam serves various purposes: to determine the athlete¹s general health, to detect conditions that might predispose the student to injury or illness during competition, to detect conditions that might be life-threatening or limiting an athlete¹s safe participation, and to meet legal and insurance requirements of the state or school.

MODERATION KEY TO ALCOHOL CONSUMPTIONThough drinking small amounts of alcohol can have potential health

benefits, Baylor College of Medicine doctors say drinking too much can do more harm than good. "The key to this contradiction is moderation," said Dr. Jeffrey Steinbauer, professor of family and community medicine at BCM. "While many people can drink more than one drink without becoming impaired, drinking higher amounts of alcohol increases the chance of suffering from various health problems." High levels of alcohol consumption contribute to health problems such as weight gain, heart problems, high blood pressure, dehydration, digestive problems including diarrhea and malabsorption, and even cancer. "While liver cancer is not directly related to drinking, some gastrointestinal cancers, like esophageal cancer, are," Steinbauer said. Moderation is the key when it comes to drinking, and you should discuss your alcohol intake with your doctor to determine whether your level is healthy or harmful.
