The Compass Rose Service Unit, which includes Sampson, Black and Farney Elementary Schools, is changing the registration process a bit this year. There will be a drop-in registration event to fill in or drop off paperwork for new Girl Scouts on September 13, 2012, at Goodson Middle School, from 6:30 to 8:00 pm. Come any time. CWC is a service organization that gives back to the community. This means that all funds raised will go right back to the community in the form of scholarships for graduating high school seniors, at Lone Star College, Cy-Fair and grants to other non-profits in our community, as well.

Membership into the Cy-Fair Women’s Club is open to all ladies in Northwest Houston/Cypress neighborhoods. Currently we meet the first Thursday of most months at West Houston Church of Christ. Our meetings begin with social time and refreshments at 7:00p.m. immediately followed by a program at 7:30p.m. The church is located at the corner of Queenston and West Road.

business during hurricane season? Find out with KPRC’s Anthony Yanez in his presentation titled “Hurricane Preparedness-Business and Home” at the Cy-Fair Express Network (CYFEN) luncheon Sept. 27.

Yanez has done it all in the news business - photography, editing, reporting, anchoring and sports - but he found his true passion in weather. And this meteorologist, who has covered severe weather since his first day July 15, 2003 at KPRC with Hurricane Claudette, said there is never a dull forecast in Houston as he deals with oppressive heat, severe thunderstorms, tornadoes and hurricanes.

All are welcome to attend the monthly meetings of CYFEN, which are held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. (with the program beginning promptly at 11:30 a.m.) the fourth Thursday of the month at the Sterling Country Club, 16500 Houston National Blvd.

September is Cholesterol Awareness Month. This is conveniently scheduled before a season known for overeating. Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukah, and the New Year all fall after September. Each of these events include numerous hours spent planning and preparing foods such as candy, pies, cookies, stuffing, and mashed potatoes with gravy. Not only do the fall months bring holiday foods, the changing of the seasons to the cooler fall months make it easier to pack on pounds that can be conveniently hidden under bulky winter clothing.

Start by knowing your numbers, so you can be informed and prepared. People with numbers in the unfavorable range should try to do as much as possible to lower their total cholesterol, LDL, and triglycerides and to raise their HDL. • For adults, 30 minutes of moderate physical activity daily and for

those aged 6-17, at least one hour of physical activity each day.• Maintain a healthy weight - Moderately active females need about

2,000 calories a day and moderately active males need about 2,400 to maintain a healthy weight. If you are trying to lose weight, decrease this number by roughly 500 calories per day.

• Don't smoke. • Eat foods high in fiber and nutrients and low in saturated fat and

cholesterol.So what can you eat? Changing your diet to lower your cholesterol

isn’t hard; incorporating a few new, relatively painless habits into your routine can make a big difference. As long as your numbers aren’t in the unfavorable range, you don’t necessarily have to swear off cheeseburgers and French fries forever, but they shouldn’t be part of your regular diet.

Here are some quick and easy cooking tips that will help you lower the cholesterol in your food: • Use lean cuts of meat with little visible fat. For beef, use the round,

chuck, sirloin, or loin; for pork, use the tenderloin or loin chop; for

lamb, use cuts from the leg, arm, and loin.• Buy “choice” or “select” grades, which have less fat than “prime”

does. Use lean or extra lean ground beef.• Broil rather than pan-fry your hamburger, lamb chops, pork chops,

butter.• Make cream sauces, soups, mashed potatoes, and scalloped potatoes

with low-fat or non-fat milk.• Use canola, safflower, sunflower, soybean, or olive oil instead of

butter, lard, and shortening.• Substitute egg whites for whole eggs. The cholesterol in eggs comes

from the yolks.• Replace the oil in muffins, cookies, and cakes with pureed fruits

or veggies. • Replace the breadcrumbs in your meatloaf with uncooked oatmeal.• Use brown rice instead of white rice, and try whole-grain pasta.

With these diet and lifestyle changes your cholesterol will decrease, allowing your blood to flow freely through your arteries, bathing your heart and brain in oxygen.

blood cancers on Sunday, September 16, 2012 at 10 a.m. in Mandolin Gardens Park (Mandolin Village Subdivision – 10000 block Summit Bridge Ln. near Cypresswood and Highway 249).

An estimated 245,225 people in the U.S. are living with, or are in remission from, leukemia. Kids ages 2-13 will ride their bikes at Mandolin Gardens Park to join the fight for a cure. Alzheimer's Assocation Walk to End Alzheimer's® Engages And Inspires Northwest Houston

The Alzheimer’s Association is inviting Northwest Houston residents to unite in a movement to reclaim the future for millions by participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Vintage Park, 114 Vintage Park Blvd., Houston, TX 77070 will be the site of Walk on September 22 at 7:30 a.m.

Walk to End Alzheimer’s is more than a walk. It is an experience for about 1000 participants in Northwest Houston who will learn about Alzheimer’s disease and how to get involved with this critical cause, from advocacy opportunities, the latest in Alzheimer’s research and clinical trial enrollment to support programs and services. Each walker will also join in a meaningful ceremony to honor those affected by Alzheimer’s disease.

With just a couple of hours a week, you can really make a difference in the life of our terminally ill patients and their loved ones. Many enjoy to sit outside in the fresh air or in their room and share stories about their life. Others are more hands on and enjoy reading, puzzles, watch football/basketball games or play other games, like Bingo and Dominos.

ADMINISTRATIVE VOLUNTEERThe administrative volunteer serves as an integral member of the

Hospice interdisciplinary team in our office in the Greenspoint

(near I45 and the Beltway) area. Office support volunteers perform duties such as, filing, copying, answering the telephone, mail-outs, and inventory control of medical supplies.

younger adults, because early detection can prevent long-term damage to sight, said ophthalmologists at Baylor College of Medicine. The biggest problem with glaucoma is that it's a silent disease, a sneak thief of sight," said Dr. Silvia Orengo-Nania, professor of ophthalmology in the Baylor Eye Clinic at BCM. "You could have visual damage occurring over time and not know it. Once damage occurs, it is irreversible and you will not be able to get any vision back that you have lost. This is why screening early is critical." Glaucoma usually occurs when increased pressure in the eye slowly destroys the optic nerve, damaging your ability to see, Orengo-Nania said. Approximately 2 million people in the United States are visually impaired by glaucoma. It is one of the leading causes of blindness. Treatment can help slow down, but not reverse impaired vision, Orengo-Nania saidSUMMER IDEAL TIME FOR ANNUAL SCHOOL PHYSICALS

MODERATION KEY TO ALCOHOL CONSUMPTIONThough drinking small amounts of alcohol can have potential health

benefits, Baylor College of Medicine doctors say drinking too much can do more harm than good. "The key to this contradiction is moderation," said Dr. Jeffrey Steinbauer, professor of family and community medicine at BCM. "While many people can drink more than one drink without becoming impaired, drinking higher amounts of alcohol increases the chance of suffering from various health problems." High levels of alcohol consumption contribute to health problems such as weight gain, heart problems, high blood pressure, dehydration, digestive problems including diarrhea and malabsorption, and even cancer. "While liver cancer is not directly related to drinking, some gastrointestinal cancers, like esophageal cancer, are," Steinbauer said. Moderation is the key when it comes to drinking, and you should discuss your alcohol intake with your doctor to determine whether your level is healthy or harmful.
