Mark Olejnik
Head of Years 7-11
Since Years 7-11 was founded in 2005, we
have grown and developed in all kinds of
ways - in facilities, in numbers, in academic
success and in reputation, and yet we have
always endeavoured to stay true to our
founding principles. What remains constant
is our commitment to secure for each and
every child in d’Overbroeck’s Years 7-11 the
best possible education in an encouraging
and fulfilling environment and to ensure
that our parents’ faith in entrusting us with
the responsibility for just about the most
important part of their children’s development
– their education - is fully justified.
We intended from the first to build a
school that was happy and stimulating; a
school with a strong sense of community
but also a place with room - and time - for
individuals; a school where all children
were valued, whatever their talents, and
where they were nurtured and encouraged
to make the most of those talents
without being subjected to excessive
pressure; a school of high standards and
wide opportunities, designed around its
students, in which they could – above all -
enjoy the educational process and attain
real academic and personal fulfilment.
We remain different because we are
still small enough for every teacher to
An encouraging and fulfilling environment
Back in 2005 I helped found a brand new part of d’Overbroeck’s, catering initially for 70 young people from 11-16 and designed to be a refreshing change from the traditionally large, driven, single gender schools to be found in Oxford and environs.Mark Olejnik, Head of Years 7-11
know every single child as an individual;
because we educate boys and girls
together; because we believe in inspiring
students towards academic success
rather than pressuring them into it and
because we aim to strike a balance
between freedom and regulation, between
informality and rigour, and between
happiness and results. We are still a place
where boundaries are clear but rules do
not stifle and where students, staff and
parents are an integral part of a distinctive
family atmosphere. We will, indeed,
continue to be a school characterised
by humour and humanity, by informal yet
respectful relationships, by a strong sense
of community and by a clear common
purpose and clear common goals.
Our vision was always that of a family
school, at ease with itself, characterised
by enthusiasm, humour, individuality and
achievement. And I believe that is exactly
what we’ve achieved over the past 15 years.

Five core values
A F O C U S O N T H E I N D I V I D U A LWe get to know each and every one of our students as individuals
so we can support and develop them at whatever stage they're at
in their academic journey.
B E Y O U R B E S TEvery year we continue to see
our students make excellent
academic progress.
F U T U R E - F O C U S E DOur academic curriculum and
co-curricular activities are designed
to help develop our students as global
citizens and future leaders.
M O D E R NAt d'Overbroeck's, it's not about stuffy
traditions and sticking to the status quo.
In practice, this means we're on first-name
terms with our students and can all stand
apart as individuals, but still feel part of a
single school community.

We believe that fun and laughter bring
education to life and we strive to bring
this into the classroom every day. Our
students thrive on this approach and
it makes for a very enjoyable learning
experience for all.
We help every individual to achieve their full potential
O U R E T H O S A N D VA L U E S
At d’Overbroeck’s, we create an environment
which gives both staff and students the space
to be themselves. It also gives them the
encouragement and stimulus to grow, learn,
engage and achieve their goals.
Our ethos is what makes us different from other independent schools. We work with each individual student to help them meet their potential. We believe in leading by example, flexibility and that students learn best when they’re happy.

Students’ social development is excellent. This is immediately obvious in their attitude to each other and to adults. They have strong friendships and also relate well to newcomers.Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI)
Placing the individual at the heart of all we do
PA S T O R A L C A R E
We provide ongoing, tailored support whilst
at the same time equipping our students
with the self-reliance and resilience to
enable them to face the world beyond
school with confidence and optimism.
Form teachers Students meet with their form teachers
twice a day for registration, which provides
opportunities to check homework, have
individual discussions with form members
and for special form activities.
Pastoral Coordinators The KS3 (Years 7-9) and KS4 (Years 10-
11) Pastoral Coordinators work with form
tutors to oversee the needs of students
in their part of the school. They monitor
both the academic progress and wellbeing
of students and, where needed, provide
additional support to help all students
achieve their full potential. The Pastoral
Coordinators also act on any disciplinary
matters that are passed onto them from
form teachers and work closely with the
Deputy Head (Pastoral) and Assistant
Head (Pastoral) to ensure students are
getting support that allows them to be fully
integrated members of our community.
Deputy Head (Pastoral) and Assistant Head (Pastoral) The Deputy Head (Pastoral) and Assistant
Head (Pastoral) support form tutors, KS
coordinators and other pastoral staff to
ensure students get the right support
in school. They work with pastoral staff
to manage behavioural issues, develop
and implement wellbeing strategies and
oversee the safeguarding of students.
When additional support is needed,
referrals can be made to our school
counsellors if appropriate as well as other
members of the pastoral team to ensure
that the social, emotional and mental
health of our students remains a priority.
At d’Overbroeck’s, pastoral care is at the heart of everything we do, as indeed it needs to be if we are to achieve our fundamental goal of assuring personal happiness and academic fulfilment for every student.

We support all students to achieve their ambitionsPersonalised learning At d’Overbroeck’s, we tailor our teaching to the needs of each student, enabling them
to meet their academic, social and personal potential. we hold high expectations for all
students and stretch and challenge is provided through consistently excellent classroom
teaching. We also use:
Extension This is about depth. We
develop students’ higher
order thinking skills by
helping them to reflect
carefully on their own
learning and progress. Well-
managed and meaningful
group discussions are a key
part of all lessons, leading
to extended thought and
developed evaluation.
Enrichment This is about breadth and
means going beyond the
usual limits of a subject
or topic. Our academic
enrichment programme,
'Think', is open to students
in Years 7-11 who want to
take part. In some cases we
may need to select students
e.g. where we need a limited
number for a team.
Acceleration This is about pace. It
involves students working
at the level of an older age
group. We will adopt this
strategy only in exceptional
circumstances where it
is essential to meeting
the needs of a particular
student.
We wanted to say a huge thank you to you and all the teachers for everything they do to make the school such a wonderfully, supportive learning environment.Parent
Learning support We are happy to offer places to students
who will require curriculum support if they
fulfil our wider academic criteria and if we
are satisfied that we can help them fulfil
their potential.
Our goal is to remove barriers to learning,
to enable students who require support
to enjoy equal access to the curriculum as
their peers and for them to achieve results
that accurately reflect their academic
ability. We also want to build confidence and
self-esteem and equip students with the
necessary practical skills for future success.
Students who require it are provided with
an Individual Education Plan, which is
reviewed termly.

Excellent exam results year after yearWe’re really proud of the excellent academic results our students achieve when they study with us. Our latest results are well above the national average, which is testament to our wide range of expertise and the excellent teaching we deliver.
Our 2020 exam results were as follows:

Once again our young people at d’Overbroeck’s have made us proud. Our students have shown real commitment and determination and have universally worked their socks off to achieve some stunning outcomes.Mark Olejnik, Head of Years 7-11
Personal development (PD) The PD curriculum is broad and covers
personal, social, moral, health and
economic education. It is designed to
inform, to help develop life skills, to
stimulate students into thinking critically
about moral, ethical and social issues, to
appreciate that different people may hold
different views, to develop the ability to
articulate one’s own opinions while being
able to listen to others and respect their
point of view, and to foster tolerance of
other people and lifestyles. At KS3 the form
tutor delivers this curriculum and at KS4,
tutors support the work of the specialist
team.
The extended curriculum We offer a range of clubs and activities
both during the school day and afterwards,
designed to broaden students’ experience
and improve their skills and knowledge.
Students have opportunities to participate
in activities that may be closely related
to the subjects they study during the
day, for example in our range of subject
‘clinics’ and clubs. Or they can get involved
in something that may open up a new
experience, such as our Debating Society,
Chess Club or the Duke of Edinburgh
Award scheme.
For students in Years 7 to 9, a two-hour
session each week is devoted to extra-
curricular activities and we require
students to opt for a different activity
each half-term. We have a wide catchment
area, so most of our activities and clubs
take place within the school day to enable
students to go home at a reasonable time.
Additionally, a number of other activities
take place after school from sports fixtures
to music or dance.
Homework forms an important part of the
extended curriculum. It involves research,
problem-solving, the reinforcement of
learning, and encouraging students to use
their initiative. Homework follows an agreed
appropriate timetable, which we share
parents and guardians, students and staff.
We also develop cross-curricular activities
that give students chance to investigate
particular themes that transcend
conventional subject and timetable
boundaries.
In Year 10, work experience is also an
integral part of the extended curriculum.
Reports We issue student progress reports and hold
parents evenings with parents and
guardians on a regular basis
as part of our academic
tracking and monitoring
system. In June, we write
more extensive reports
for Years 7 to 10 and in
December we do the
same for Year 11.

Our curriculum is designed to develop our students’ knowledge, skills and talents in a supportive environment which encourages and challenges each individual rather than pressurises them. This helps students to become confident, independent people who understand and are able to meet their full potential.
In Years 7 and 8 we teach all students in mixed ability groups
except for Maths, where we usually set classes according to
learning styles and needs. This enables individuals to work
at their own pace and provides the flexibility for them to be
supported and challenged as appropriate.
Students follow a broad curriculum, embracing Mathematics,
English (including Literature), Geography, History, Latin,
French, Spanish (starting in Year 8), Computing, Art and Design,
Music, Drama, Sport, Personal Development and Religion,
Ethics and Philosophy. A general Science course is taught by
specialists in Years 7 and 8.
Our broad curriculum continues with students selecting two languages
from a choice of three. However, some choose to study Classical
Civilisation instead of a second foreign language. Students study Biology,
Chemistry and Physics as separate subjects from Year 9 onwards.
Most students study 10 GCSEs and we create option
groups to give students as much choice and flexibility as
possible. Students follow a balanced programme including
the compulsory options of Maths, English Language and
Literature, a Modern Foreign Language, and a Humanities
subject. All students study for Triple Award Science.
We also give all GCSE students guidance on how to prepare
for public examinations, careers and their options for Sixth
Form and further education.

School lunches
We are committed to the health and
wellbeing of all our students, and the food
we provide is no exception. School lunches
are prepared by a professional team of chefs
based at our Sixth Form and served on site
by our catering staff. Some students prefer
to bring a packed lunch with them, which
they can choose to eat either in the dining
hall or outside in good weather.
Homework Club
We also have a Homework Club, which
is free and supervised that takes place
every day from Monday to Thursday after
school until 17:00. It allows us to provide
an environment in which students can
complete their homework or conduct
independent research, confident that they
can ask for any support they need from the
teacher who is supervising.

From team sports to individual pursuits
Enjoyment and variety are the best ways
to describe sporting life at d’Overbroeck’s
Years 7-11. We pride ourselves on
encouraging all students, regardless of
previous experiences, to enjoy participating
in a wide range of sports throughout the
year. This could be either traditional team
sports or more individual pursuits, such as
trampolining, squash and badminton.
We try to include all students in every sport,
with lessons tailored to match every group’s
abilities. All students participating in PE should
feel a sense of fun and accomplishment at
the end of every sports lesson. This is what we
strive towards for all our lessons. If students
are enjoying themselves then they’ll also be
engaging and learning.
Students have a minimum of two sports
lessons per week: one morning lesson
and one longer afternoon lesson. They
will participate in two separate sports
every week, to help them develop a wider
understanding of different sports. We
usually change the majority of sports every
half term to encourage greater variety.
S P O R T
We have access to excellent
specialist facilities throughout
Oxford, which are specific to
the requirements of every sport.
Whether it is track and field,
badminton, netball or handball
courts, or a swimming pool and
rugby / football pitches.
Our school teams also play sporting fixtures
against other local independent schools
and those further afield. We are proud to
have representative teams in many sports,
including football, netball, hockey, rugby
union, cross-country running, cricket,
swimming, softball and athletics.
In addition to sports being taught within
our curriculum, we are able to offer many
sports in our activities programme. Some
examples include trampolining, archery,
fitness (spinning/circuits/boxercise), judo,
sculling, swimming, lifesaving, and squash.

Helping you be the best you can beOur Instrumental and Vocal Programme Significant numbers of students at
d’Overbroeck’s choose to enrich their
school experience through enrolment in
the voice and instrument programme. We
offer peripatetic lessons every week in a
range of classical orchestral and rock and
jazz instruments as well as for voice, which
has been very popular. Students may wish
to prepare for external practical and theory
exams, or learn to play an instrument for
enjoyment, which they can do by joining one
of our school ensembles or vocal groups.
We usually put on a range of concerts and
musical events throughout the academic
year such as our Winter and Summer
Concerts, the annual school theatre
production and student recitals. We also
host the Spring Concert and House Music
Competition for our Years 7-9 students,
which gives beginners the opportunity to
perform in front of their peers and families
and to compete for the House Music
Trophy. All students have the chance to
perform in the Cohen Hall at our Sixth
Form Centre.
Extra-Curricular music Our Junior Ensemble caters for beginners
and those with a little experience, whilst
developing players have chance to play a
wider and more challenging repertoire in
the School Orchestra. We also have some
rock groups that meet regularly, either
independently or with guidance from one
of our peripatetic teachers.
For singers in Years 10-13, we have an
excellent Vocal Ensemble. They tackle a
range of music in many styles that they
perform in our concerts. For younger
students we have a pop choir, which gives
them another opportunity to sing and
perform in concerts and develop both
their skills and their self-confidence.
Students who want to extend their musical
skills can opt for Music Technology Club
(in the Sixth Form and in Years 7-11), or
they may wish to study theory or keyboard
skills, in which case the music staff run
lunchtime activities to cater for the
different options.

Drama at d’Overbroeck’s is about much
more than learning lines and performing:
it is also about unleashing students’
dramatic creativity. We encourage this by
exposing students to many different styles
and genres of drama, both scripted and
improvised, from mask work to puppetry.
We give them considerable ownership of
their creative pieces and support them
in taking creative and intellectual risks.
It’s a vehicle through which students
develop confidence in themselves – not
just as performers, but as individuals and
members of a broader society.
Annual Whole School production Every year we usually mount a full-scale
production which is open to all students
at d’Overbroeck’s, from Year 7 to 13. We
usually alternate yearly between a musical
and a straight play, which allows students
with different talents to shine in a big-
budget production that challenges and
stretches their acting abilities. We try to
ensure that everyone who auditions is
given a part while the audition process
itself is friendly and unthreatening –
indeed, at times we cast plays from
workshop sessions without having to hold
“proper” auditions at all.
Develop performance skills throughout the year As well as the major annual production,
there are a variety of other opportunities
to get involved in Drama throughout the
year – whether as a first-time actor or a
seasoned performer- including the annual
House Drama Competition, where every
form group from Year 7 to 10 presents its
own performance of excerpts from one
of their English coursework texts. These
performances are chosen, devised and
directed by the students themselves.
Prizes are awarded for best play and actor
in each year group with an external judge,
and competition is fierce yet friendly.

We ask candidates to sit examinations across
a range of subjects, usually Maths, English,
Science and Humanities.
Art This scholarship allows us to recognise
outstanding talent in the visual/fine arts,
which will be demonstrated by a portfolio of
work. We require candidates to spend half a
day in school producing a piece of work and
discussing their portfolio.
Performing Arts If a student is able to demonstrate an
outstanding talent and enthusiasm for
Music, Drama or both, we may award them
a performing arts scholarship. They’ll need
to demonstrate commitment and play a very
active role in school productions and other
performing arts activities.

We make awards to students who will make a considerable contribution to the life of the school, and who show outstanding ability and potential in a particular area
Our deadline for scholarship applications is in February 2021 and our Scholarship Days take place in early March 2021.
We also have a limited number of bursaries available.
If you want to find out more about applying for your child to join Years 7 to 11, the first step is
to contact our Registrar, Rob Barker. You can either email [email protected] or call 01865 688731. We would then strongly encourage you to come and visit – either by
coming to an Open Day or arranging an individual visit on a school day.
