Happy Independence Day to all. We are celebrating the 70th year of Independence. Our country has progressed a lot in these years.
But ironically the fruits of progress have not reached all the segments of society and for some nothing has changed at all. In rural
India, illiteracy is still rampant, poor farmers are in the grip of unscrupulous money lenders and social evils like caste issues and
female infanticide and impoverishment still prevail. These problems can be erased through education. The Literacy Mission of
Rotary and its aim to set up happy schools is a landmark mission and like the Polio Eradication Project can be a historical
achievement. Let us whole heartedly support this programme. Let the only region of this world be Literacy. After all only an
enlightened mind can wipe out the darkness in this world.

Man with father’s heart walks bride down the aisle- A True Story
The story began in September 2006, when Michael Stepien, 53, Jeni Stepien’s father was robbed at gunpoint and shot in head while
returning from work, in Pennsylvania. As Michael lay dying in a hospital, he decided to donate his organs through an organization.
The organization allows the recipient of organs and donor family to remain in touch with each other after transplant. Stepien’s
heart went to Arthur Thomas, 72, of New Jersey who was diagnosed with a serious heart ailment. After the transplant Arthur
Thomas wrote a Thank you letter to the family of Stepien. Stepien’s family and Arthur remained in regular touch with each other
through emails and phone calls.
Jeni Stepien, daughter of Michael Stepien got engaged to an engineer Paul Maenner, 10 years later. She was thinking, “Who will
walk me down the Aisle?” At her fiancé’s suggestion she wrote to Arthur Thomas asking him to walk her down the aisle and he
readily agreed and he travelled from New Jersey to Pennsylvania to walk her down the aisle and Jeni thought, “My Dad is here with
us, and this man is here with us because of us.”
This is a beautiful story which I wanted to share with you all as we have celebrated Organ Donation day on 13th August and Organ
Donation is one of the thrust areas of District 3141.
