Steps used to compare two populations resulting in an inference (conclusion based on facts).

Step 1:  Determine if each of the two graphs are symmetric or not symmetric.  

Step 2:  Refer to chart on page 606 to decide which are the two most appropriate measures you should use to help make your inference (conclusion).

a)  which measure of center should you useb)  which measure of variation should you use

Step 3: Determine and calculate the appropriate measure of center for each population (label work)

Step 4: Determine and calculate the appropriate measure of variation for each population (label work)

Step 5: Make an inference by:a)  stating what you find when you compare the measures of center for each population, andb)  stating what you find when you compare the measures of variation for each population.

Note:Measures of center:  described by the median or mean of the data

Measures of variation:  described by the interquartile range or MAD of the data ­ both describe the spread of the data.  The smaller the number, the smaller the spread of the data.
