CMOST improves a reservoir engineer’s effectiveness by eliminating the time to generate hundreds of scenarios and allows the engineer to focus on results interpretation and evaluation. CMOST is fully coupled to CMG’s robust reservoir simulators – IMEX™, GEM™ and STARS™ - enabling it to history match and optimize any reservoir scenario. CMOST dispatches multiple, simultaneous simulation runs to the nodes of a cluster, to multiple PCs on a network, or even to multiple cores on a single PC. CMOST interprets the results of these runs, eliminates non-physical solutions and narrows the search space rapidly to reach the ultimate best case, while avoiding the local maxima and minima.Solutions to reservoir models with trillions of possible combinations and permutations can often be found in less than a thousand runs. SENSITIVITY ANALYSIS Sensitivity analysis (SA) is used to determine how sensitive an objective function is to different parameters and their ranges in values. More parameters yield an exponentially larger search space, so only parameters with most impact should be used. Study the sensitivity to determine which parameters can be eliminated during the history match process or may need further field investigation to narrow the possible range. HISTORY MATCHINGHistory matching (HM) involves the adjustment of thereservoir simulation model to accurately reproduce past reservoir behaviour and then simulate future behaviour with increased confi dence.The CMOST semi-automated HM workfl ow, uingexperimental design methods, identifi es the best match(es) and identifi es the variability parameters in the minimum number of runs. CMOST learns which values produce the best results, enabling it to dramatically reduce the number of runs required to fi nd the optimal solution. This is the fastest technique for accuratehistory match(es) and reliable production forecasts.

OPTIMIZATIONThe CMOST optimization methodology includes: designed exploration controlled evolution (DECE); multi-objective function optimization; particle swarm optimization; random search; brute force search; and uncertainty assessment. Use CMOST to optimize NPV, cumulative steam oil ratio (cSOR), well placement, frac spacing and design, completion design, recovery factor and cumulative oil. CMOST’s power lies in modern experimental design and optimization algorithms which varies dozens to hundreds of parameterssimultaneously to fi nd the optimal solution – something a human cannot do.

UNCERTAINTY ANALYSISWithin reservoir characterization, uncertainty exists when the variables in the data set may stray from the predicted values. The CMOST uncertainty analysis workfl ow allows engineers to assess the reliabilityof predications and to understand the impact thoseuncertainties will have on NPV of the optimum case.
