9The first reason for having lights on a bicycle is safety, for the cyclist but also for other vehicles. Lights improve the cyclist’s visibility and clearly indicate the position of the bicycle as well as any change in direction, in the most difficult conditions (night, rain, fog, and so on…).

Safety Safe way of riding

Our lights, both front and rear, comply with this requirement

by offering a great visibility. In order to determine the visi-

bility distance of our lights, Spanninga has defined specific

calculations linked to light illumination. In the same way, the

battery lifetime of our products is measured until the light

illumination reaches the minimum visibility level at 10m that

we have determined, which is 0,25 Lux for front lights and

0,5 cd for rear lights. The visibility distance and battery

lifetime of our products are clearly mentioned on our

packaging.

Since its creation, the Spanninga Group has maintained

the highest standards of quality control in order to satisfy

continuously customer needs and expectations.

Quality testsFrom the development phase until their launch on the

market, all our products go through a number of tests

that have been carefully defined in our quality policy:

• Photometric values are regularly measured to make

sure the light output and visibility meets our

expectations and the regulations we apply for,

• Shock resistance tests are carried out to ensure the

best use of our products in all kinds of conditions

(vibration and crash tests, temperature tests, UV,

moisture and corrosion tests, durability tests, etc.),

• Water resistance is controlled to achieve the IPX3 rating

(protection against spraying and splashing water).

Product quality and user safety are the 2 main commitments of our for-ward-looking group. Offering the best safety conditions means offering high-quality products to rely on. That’s why we provide a large range of products, all of them developed for specific needs and for an easy use.

Page 11: CMCG

Spanninga catalogue | 2014 | Pro

11BatteriesUser friendliness also means quality; that is why we are very

attentive to the battery consumption during the conception

phase. Our development team gives priority to technologies

offering very low battery consumption in order to offer the

longest time of use of our lighting products. We also pay

great attention to the quality of the batteries we use and

mainly supply our products with high-performance batteries.

13Over the years, Spanninga has always created exclusive and innovative high-end lights. Our unique touch has brought illustrious bike manufacturers to work with us to develop specially-designed products for their bicycles. The high quality of the Spanninga name in this field is rewarded by the satisfaction and the trust of our customers.

Page 14: CMCG

14 Our approach to bicycle lights design is to

maintain, in addition to the core functionalities of

the product, clear and clean surfaces and limited

control elements (like integrated switch or

attachment).

The use of innovative combinations of materials

(like brushed aluminum or stainless steel) and

the selection of specific colour shades enhanced

by the Spanninga icon contribute to a certain

harmony to make it easier to distinguish our

brand based on the design of our products.

This gives an idea of how the future models of

the Spanninga family might look…

Distinction through simplicity

Spanninga’s design vision focuses on a strong link between technology and design. In most of our products, technology is not hidden but rather integrated into the design of the product and therefore displayed as a real asset. We are convinced that internal technical elements (like cooling elements, optical parts etc.) give another dimension to our creations and highlight the authenticity of our products.

Safety is crucial, so we pay very much attention to safety in

respect of bicycles for adults and bicycles for children. This

is an essential part of the briefing. In our opinion it is very

important that the lighting will not damage when the bicycle

falls. Also very important is the fact that the lighting is

always working, in twilight as well as in the dark! And third,

in the development of the SL-18 headlight we paid not only

attention to the quantity of light in behalf of the cyclist to see

very well, but also to the aspect of ‘being seen’. That’s why

we gave utmost attention to the visibility of the vulnerable

side of the cyclist!

Co-operating with Spanninga we know that we can count on

expertise, gained over many years, which is not only impor-

tant for the Netherlands but also for the exporting countries.

Just look at the new headlight we developed together! With

this design we prove that we are leading in that field and, as a

bonus…..we won the Bicycle Innovation Award 2013 with it!

It is a must for Sparta to be a leader in several segments of

the market. Spanninga does really help us to realize this

performance by developing new technologies and designs.

Safety has always been an important issue for Batavus. In a

country where people are always using the bicycle as often

as in the Netherlands, in daylight as well as in the dark, in

all weathers, good lighting is a must! Spanninga helps us to

make our clients visible by offering the right products and

thinks along with us in the development of new products.

Purchasing a bicycle is becoming more and more an emo-

tional choice. An appealing design is of great importance.

Batavus designs almost all her components herself. Span-

ninga helps us to transfer these designs in solutions which

fulfil our quality and safety standards. Cooperating with

Spanninga means a big advantage of design freedom.

Spanninga is a company that is constantly trying to update

her products. They come up regularly with new develop-

ments which follow the latest lighting trends. Furthermore

they know how to implement these innovations in our own

designs. Our most recent line of headlights and rearlights is

a good example of this way of working.

For Trek Benelux, as a part of a worldwide company, safety is

of very great importance. As one of the initiators of the RAI-

mark for bicycle lighting, Spanninga has proved to consider

safety, like us, as a high priority. Trek has carried out several

projects in which design and integration were important

requirements. Spanninga was closely involved in the

development projects and could very well meet the wishes

of our designers and engineers. Spanninga is capable of

delivering the right things to customers and to us as a bicycle

manufacturer in the constantly changing lighting market.

Safety is an important issue for us. Our lighting must meet

what we call ‘robust quality’ with which ‘to see’ and ‘being

seen’ is of great importance. This must last over the total

lifetime of the bicycle.

One of the brand visions of Gazelle is ‘smart design’. This

provides us a great part of our distinctive position in the

cycle market. So that is how we add value to our bicycles.

Spanninga delivers a very good balance in price/quality

and combines this for e.g. rearlights with good lightguiding

technologies. Moreover they are leaders in the modular

construction of their products.

DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHT FUNCTION©

Good lighting on a bicycle is crucial for the safety of the rider.

The fact is that lack of visibility is a major cause of accidents

for riders, and this is true also during the day. The Daytime

Running Light function increases the visibility of the bicycle,

and protects the rider during the day. This function features

one or more LEDs which shine automatically during the

daytime to bring extra visibility. When it gets dark, a light

sensor dims the daytime LEDs and lets the main beam

take over. Howether the DRL is not a lighting system in itself:

while the main beam is directed towards the road to allow

the rider to see his way, the daytime running LEDs shine

straight to allow him to be seen by other road users (visible

enough to but not blinding).

Page 33: CMCG

Spanninga catalogue | 2014 | Pro

33RIM LIGHT TECHNOLOGY©

The Rim Light Technology is one of the latest technologies

developed by Spanninga. It features a specially designed lens

system which spreads the light of the single high power LED

onto the road. This technology particularly excels in preventing

any light loss, given that all the light rays are fully refracted on

the outside surface of the lens. The light being spread through

the light ring only, this technology gives the possibility to have

a reflector or a logo or any other part at the center of the light.

Page 34: CMCG

XTL TECHNOLOGY©

This technology uses the total reflection phenomena of light

rays on the specially shaped and polished surface of a lens.

Due to the total reflection of the ray, hardly any light is lost,

resulting in a very efficient light system where most lumens of

the light source are used in the effective beam on the road.

This results in a good light spread, large light beam and

economic power consumption.

Page 35: CMCG

RBT TECHNOLOGY©

As a major development, Spanninga has developed the LED

Reverse Beam Technology that uses only ¼ of the energy of a

regular bulb for the same intensity and with hardly any heat

loss. The LED light is projected backwards onto a mirror

directing it into a powerful conical beam with a perfect light

spread. The light is then divided over a large surface which

makes it less aggressive to the eyes. The result is less light

loss and less power consumption.

Spanninga catalogue | 2014 | Pro

35

Page 36: CMCG

LLT TECHNOLOGY©

The Light Line Technology uses one very low consumption

LED. The light is spread through a specially shaped light guide

which diffuses it following a line shape. A magnifying glass

placed in front of the light line gives the rear light its

“mysterious” look. The shape of both the light line and the

glass has been designed in a way that the light is also guided

on the lateral sides of the carrier. A similar technology is

commonly used in the automotive industry in order to have

the most creative, trendy and unique design for rearlights.

Today, rearlights are not only one of the key parts of cars

identity, but also for bikes.

Page 37: CMCG

LGT TECHNOLOGY©

In a low visibility environment, the rearlight is the 1st security

of the cyclist to be seen from the back and then avoided by the

approaching traffic. Most accidents happening at road

junctions, it is also important to offer good side visibility.

Our R&D team has developed a unique technology providing

an optimal spread of the LED light on the sides of the rearlight:

the Light Guide Technology. It captures the lateral light coming

from the LED and brings it with minimum loss on the sides of

the rearlight. The visibility of the rearlight is increased .

Characterized by its ultra-flat design, the SOLO uses the advanced LLT© technology with one LED offering spectacular opportunities to designers in terms of conception. The result is an ideal tail light for urban cyclists combining a flat design and a very bright and blazing light beam.

Ultra-flat designThe size of the SOLO is unique (98x36x15mm

only for the dynamo version) making it the

most compact carrier rearlight on the market.

Its neat square shape suits perfectly all styles

of carriers, and it features a clever mounting

system easy to adjust to 50 and 80mm car-

rier mounts depending on the version: the

battery versions have removable clipped bolts

and the dynamo versions present movable

mounting screws. The SOLO does not merely

serve aesthetic purposes.

Increased safetyThere’s little room for mistake when it comes

to riding safely and securely at night when

you have the SOLO. Its tight proportions small

volume allows it to be more integrated into

the carriers and on the bikes, and thus tend

to make it less vulnerable to shocks. Aside

from being a robust rearlight, the SOLO is

mainly outstanding for its performance.

Its lighting system provides the necessary

source of road illumination from the rear and

also from the sides, increasing visibility all

around the bike and therefore its safety.

Want to be unique? The LINEO is the first rearlight on the

market featuring 2 original light lines placed at the bottom

corners of the light, and which give it an inimitable and

distinctive look on bicycles.

The BRASA, with its distinctive design, draws a bright red

line on the ordinary style of carrier rearlights existing on the

market. Its design is exceptionally innovative with optics

clearly offset from the rest of the light, giving the impression

that a red line is floating in the air.
