  The  Habitat  Cluster?  

The  Habitat  Cluster,  a  major  agglomerate  of  economical  ac<vi<es  in  Portugal  as  well  as  in  Europe.    

…gathers  raw  materials  extrac<ng  ac<vi<es,  materials  transforma<on  and  suppliers  companies  (from  wood,  metals,  plas/cs  to  ceramics  and  cement),  the  construc2on  ac2vi2es  and  also  other  suppliers  of  goods  and  equipments  for  the  Habitat,  a  relevant  cluster  in  the  European  economy…  

Clusters  ini<a<ve  in  Portugal  was  launched  in  2008  and  their  recogni<on  was  finished  in  October  2009.    

The  Portuguese  Sustainable  Habitat  Cluster  based  its  ac<on  program  in  the  concept  that  Sustainability  could  be  an  excellent  driving  force  and  challenge  for  Innova2on  and  Compe22veness.

 To develop a network of partnerships for the development of products, technologies and systems for a

more sustainable habitat;

 To promote innovation projects using the cluster synergies making sustainability a differentiation factor

for competitiveness;

 Dissemination of recommendations and projects about building sustainable;

 At national level, the Cluster collective strategy focus specially on the conservation and refurbishment

market, at the urban planning level and at the materials, solutions and technologies development level.

  To  develop  and  consolidate  the  Sustainable  Habitat  cluster,  the  work  program  needs  to  set  up:  

 Interna2onaliza2on  condi2ons;  

 Coopera2on  condi2ons;  

 Knowlegde  access  condi2ons;  

 The  work  program  considers  the  built  environment  sustainability  as  a  dynamic  factor  for  the  cluster  and  a  

compe<<veness  improvement  factor  for  its  agents:  

 The  program  sets  its  strategy  in  3  anchor  projects  and  in  a  framework  for  companies  based  projects;  

 The  3  anchor  projects  set  the  fundamental  axis  of  support  for  the  development  of  innova<on  projects;

 PA1 – Centre for Sustainable Construction Materials

 Supports   ac<ons   related   to   the   development   of  materials,   solu<ons   and  

produc<on  technologies,  ac<ng  as  a  space  for  test  and  valida<on;  

 PA2 – Centre for Sustainable Construction Technologies

 Supports   the   needs   for   the   use   and   development   of   sustainable  

construc<on   technologies,   from   the   study   and   test   of   construc<on  elements  to  the  diagnosis  of  problems  and  test  of  solu<ons.  

 PA3 – Centre for Habitat Sustainability

 This   project   integrates   the   others   in   a   knowledge   and   competences   network,  

promotes   the   dissemina<on   of   projects   results   and   is   also   concerned  with  

training  and  educa<on.

 The framework sets the boundaries for the initiatives led by companies and other cluster agents, based

on the collective strategy set for the Habitat cluster and approved within the work program.

 3  main  subjects  were  set  to  fit  relevant  projects  for  the  built  environment  sustainability:  

 Development  of  materials  and  products  for  a  sustainable  construc<on;  

 Development  of  sustainable  construc<on  technologies  and  systems;  

 Energy  and  environmental  impacts  and  performance  of  built  environment;

Conclusions  

  Sustainable  Habitat  Cluster  is  concerned  to  be  a  space  for  partnerships  leading  to  

innova<on  and  compe<<veness.  

  In  order  to  promote  innova<on  driven  by  sustainability,  the  Pla\orm  considers  

Interna2onal  Networking  very  relevant.
