The senior hurling final is the biggest Club eventin Wexford GAA calendar. We hope we can dojustice to the occasion with this programme.

Today we welcome Oulart The Ballagh the kingpins of hurling in Wexford for the past ten yearsand Faythe Harriers a proud hurling Club fromWexford town who have many county titles totheir name. It makes for an intriguing final withWexford stars on both teams. Oulart have goneso close to winning a Leinster title in recenttimes and have supplied many of the players forthe senior county side. Faythe Harriers with along history of senior titles have been rebuildingin recent years with great underage success andthis is now bearing fruition with this fabulousyoung team. A game of great skill and endeavoris anticipated and an exhibition of all that isgood in Wexford hurling and a marker for thefuture in hoped for.

Our first game today features Rapparees VNaomh Eanna in the Creane & Creane Roinn 1minor hurling final. Much has been said of how the GAA is losing thefight in urban areas but our towns are buckingthis trend. Gorey (Naomh Eanna) andEnniscorthy (Rapparees) are represented here

today. Wexford town(Faythe Harriers) are inthe senior final and theHarries also won theU21 premier title thisyear. Last year it was theRapparees and Faythe Harriers in the minor finalso congratulations to all who have put so muchwork into coaching in our towns as well as allother areas.

A daoine uaisle agus a chairde go leir, cuirimfailte roimh gach einne agus go mor mhorcuirim failte roimh na foirne ata ag imirtanseo inniu.

On behalf of Coiste Chondae Loch Garman, Iwould like to welcome you to Wexford Park forthe Pettitts Senior Hurling Final and theCreane & Creane-Club Wexford Minor hurlingfinal. This is my first senior hurling final ascounty chairman and it has been an eventfulyear.

Liam Dunne has set about his task ofrebuilding our senior hurling team with greatenthusiasm. After saving our Division 1 statuswe eventually were places in a new Division1b. We had to defeat Laois in a relegationfinal to retain our place there and for the 2013season there is some serious competitionfrom Dublin, Offaly and Limerick who joinCarlow, Kerry, Antrim with us in that group.

We have been drawn to play Dublin in theLeinster championship for 2013 and weexpect that this game will be a ‘Home’ matchfor us as we were drawn out first. So let’s makeWexford Park buzz next summer with purpleand gold as Liam and his team set forth onanother championship venture.

The Creane & Creane Minor Roinn1 final istoday’s curtain raiser. Naomh Eanna andRapparees fight it out for the Creane & Creanetitle.

Oulart The Ballagh and Faythe Harriers are oursenior finalists and both are seriouspowerhouses of hurling in the county. Acracker is expected.

The jubilee team today is the Rathnure 1986-87 winning team. Many legendary names ofWexford hurling will be coming out to receivetheir Silver Jubilee award.

We are also delighted to introduce themagnificent Wexford Camogie 3 in a row AllIreland Champions.

Pettitt’s Senior Hurling Final

1986 County Final – Rathnure V Buffers AlleyRathnure 2-16 Buffers Alley 1-14

Rathnure won their 13th senior hurling title andtheir first since 1980 thanks to a power-packedsecond half display when gutsy determinationnailed Buffers Alley's dreams of a record fifetitles on the trot. Nearly 8000 spectators atWexford Park watched in brilliant sunshine asRathnure shattered the Alley with goals in the22nd and 30th minute of the first half.

Buffers Alley tried to substitute youth forexperience by making no less than fourchanges in personnel from their semi-final winover Cloughbawn. This gamble didn't work outand at half time they were forced to bring onvetrans Martin Casey and Ger Sweeney in an

effort to stem the tide which was running unRathnure's way.

Buffers Alley started off much the betterteam and after 20 minutes raced into a 0-9 to0-4 lead. The game really opened up and on the22nd minute with a teriffic John Codd goal – Hepicked up a long clearnace from John Conran, soloed in from the wing and side stepped twodefenders before goaling into the corner of thenet. John Murphy reduced the arears to onepoint but Mick Butler and Seamus O' Learyincreased the Alley's lead to 3 just before thebreak. Pat Codd got back one for Rathnure butseconds before the half time whistle, Pat Kennydeflectd a John Murphy shot straight into thehand of the waiting Nicky Hearne who blastedthe ball to the net.

Rathnure Jubilee Teams 1986 / 1987

Rathnure - 1986 Senior Hurling Champions

Rathnure completed the double in 1986 and 1987 after a gap of 6 years towin their 13th and 14th Senior Hurling titles, while also stopping BuffersAlley completing a remarkable 5 in a row of Championship wins in 1986.

Buffers Alley changed around things at halftime, and although Rathnure had the fresheningbreeze, it was the Alley who gained the initiativeand when Mick Butler scored 1-2 without replythe Alley were 4 points up.

Rathnure introduced John Quigley whichseem to give them a huge boost. Jimmy Holohanscored 2 points and John Codd added anotherone. John Qugley with his first puck of the gamescroed another point to level up the game. JohnCodd and Marks Morrissey swung the game inRathnure's favour.

Play became very scrappy in the last tenminutes which resulted in several bookings toboth Rathnure and Buffers Alley player, butRathnure managed to hold on to win by 5 points.

John Conran, Martin Quigley, Jimmy Holohan,John Codd and John Murphy were best forRathnure and they helped to ensure that JohnQuigley won his 9th championship medal. MickButler, Martin Casey, Sean Whelan and TomDempsey were the best players for a tiredlooking Buffers Alley team. Rathnure Captain JimO' Connell received the cup from CountyChairman Simon Kennedy.

Rathnure: Ted Morrissey, Mike Codd, MartinQuigley, Joe Doyle, David Sheehan, Jim O'Connell, Vin Reddy, John Conran, Jimmy Holohan(0-6), John Codd (1-3), Jim Redmond, NickyHearne (1-2), John Murphy (0-2), Pat Codd (0-1),Marks Morrissey (0-1). Subs: Lar Ronan for VinReddy, John Quigley for Lar Ronan.

Rathnure went on to beat Camross from Laois inthe Leinster Club Hurling final with a 4 point winon a scoreline of 2-16 to 3-09. Jimmy Holohanfinished with 12 points in this game which wasplayed in Croke Park. Camross got within a pointof Rathnure with ten minutes remaining, but agoal from Marks Morrissey gave Rathnure theirfirst Leinster Club title win in 8 years.

They then played the Galway championsKillimordaly in Wexford Park in the All-IrelandClub Semi-Final and came away with a lucky 0-11 to 0-9 win. John Quigley, was introduced with15 minutes remaining and had a huge role inswinging the win in Rathnure's favourite.

Rathnure then faced Borrisleigh of Tipperaryin the All-Ireland Club Final on a wet and windySt. Patricks Day in 1987. Rathnure battledbravely but it was not to be and lost out on ascoreline of 2-09 to 0-9. The Tommy Moore Cupeluded them once more.

MORRISSEY GOALS SEAL RATHNURE WIN1987 County Final – Rathnure V CloughbawnRathnure 2-06 Cloughbawn 0-9

Marks Morrissety was the toast of Rathnureafter two opportunist goals by the cornerforward gave Rathnure their 14th SeniorHurling title and 2nd on the trot. The goals hada bit of good fortune about them but theycounted and deprived a lively and verydetermined Cloughbawn side their first titlesince 1951. The game will be remembered foran incident involving Cloughbawn's mascot (acock) and a Rathnure player!

Cloughbawn will rue at least threemarvellous goal chances they had in the first

half and two more in the second half. Butdespondent as they were about the result, inthe end there is little doubt that there is afuture in this young team.

Paul Carton granted Cloughbawn an earlylead when pointing within two minutes of thestart, and Sean Wickham extended their leadwith points in the 10th and 12th minute.

But a number of switches by the Rathnuremanagement team of Dan Quigley, AidanSomers and Seamus Barron served to calmtheir opponents attack somewhat. MarksMorrissey pounced in the 15th minute with agoal to punish some lazy defending fromCloughbawn.

The challengers took control again with twopointed frees from John Fleming and one fromSean Wickham, to give them a 0-6 to 1-0advantage. Ted Morrissey made somemagnificant saves for Rathnure during thisperiod. Cloughbawn led 0-7 to 1-2 at half time.

Jimmy Holohan produced a sparklingresumption to the 2nd half with two sublimesideline cuts before another line ball wasconnected on by Marks Morrissey in the 37thminute to leave the score 2-4 to 0-7. JohnFleming and Sean Wickham kept Cloughbawn intouch with points but a subperb saved from TedMorrissey from a 21 yard free meant Rathnurehung on 2-6 to 0-9 and were the first club to liftthe Gain Trophy.

Rathnure were best served by Martin Quigley,Jimmy Holohan, Joy Doyle, John Conran, JimO'Connell and Marks Morrissey. Ger Flood playedhis heart out for Cloughbawn as did Sean Flood,Sean Wickham and Paul Carton.

A WORD FROM THE SHELMALIERS CHAIRMAN

S

Pettitt’s Senior Hurling Final

Jim Berry captains todays team. Jim has represented his club proudlyat every age from under 10 to Senior. He has won co Medals at u14,u16, Minor and Senior. He is also a good footballer and handballer buthurling is his first game. He turned in a man of the Matchperformance in the Minor Co Final and it wouldn’t be his last. He hasdonned a county jersey for the past few years also. A prolific scorerand a hard man to mark he can be a thorn in the side of any opponent. He is a real leader on the field and a natural choice for the role ofCaptain.

I am proud and delighted to be part of a setup that sees the Faythe Harriers Senior teamback in Wexford Park for a Senior Co Final. Iam also pleased that our opponents on theday are Oulart The Ballagh who have beenthe dominant force in Wexford hurling forsome years now. Every player wants tomeasure himself against the best. I know ourlads are looking forward to a great game ofhurling and let’s hope it will be anentertaining one for all.

All members of the team are a pleasure toknow and they are here today on merit. Fromthe veteran goalkeeper, Archie Scallan to theyoungest member of the panel, John Bridgesthey have each played their part in thischampionship campaign. I would like to paytribute also to the mentors and the backroom workers as well as the players.Whether you lifted the weights, coached theteam, cut the grass, made the sandwiches, attended the meetings, raised the funds, cheered from wet sidelines, or offered a fewquiet words of wisdom when required this isyour county final and I hope you enjoy it.

I am conscious also of those who are nothere today but whose presence is felt by all.Last time we were in this position Pat Murphywas at the helm and I’m sure he has thebunting flying up above today too. Tradition

and heritage are a big part of what the GAAis about. The Faythe Harriers GAA Clubbegan life as a street league team in 1941.Throughout the forties the street leagueswere an intrinsic part of life in Wexford Town.Initially the only sport was Gaelic Football butin 1949 hurling was also introduced to theformat. The whole town was captivated bythese leagues. Passions ran high andallegiances were forged. The Faythe Harrierswon that first hurling league and now 63years later it is still going strong.

The Harriers have won five Senior titlesthe most recent being in 2001. It has takena while to get back to this arena but ‘ An rudis annamh is iontach’. It is a much neededshot in the arm for urban hurling to have atown team in the final today. Claiming the u21 title recently was a nice run in for theyounger players. My biggest hope is that theyoungsters who are here today from all partsof Wexford Town will be inspired andencouraged to pick up their hurls and carryon the proud tradition of hurling in Wexford.

I would like to take this opportunity tothank our generous sponsors Sam McCauleychemist for their ongoing support. Alsothanks to O’Neills and the Gaelic Bar for theirsupport at this time

Ann Slaven

Minor Hurling Final

Starting at 7 years of age i was fortunate enough to grow up with talentedbunch of hurlers. We had experienced managers such as Adrian Fenlon,Declan Ruth, Podge and John Walsh, I am very honoured to represent andlead this team to Wexford park today, It was a great growing up with theselads from a young age, making friends for life. Biggest influence i wouldhave to say during these years was Maurice Treacy. Maurice looked afterme when i started for the Rapparees only for him i wouldn't be hurling atall. Best Memory was in 2010 representing Wexford at under 16 level inthe Arbawn under Podge "Skinner" Walsh, This Man is a great mentor andfamily friend to make this extra special he is a Dublin roader.

On behalf of all involved at RappareesStarlights hurling and football club I wouldlike to welcome you to today. It is a hugeprivilege for the young men from Bellefield tobe taking to the pitch on two consecutiveSundays. Having been unsuccessful in thefootball final last week we are very hopefulthat this fine group of skilful hurlers will takehome the Hurling title which they won is suchan exciting game last year.

Many of this panel were among the countyminor team which reached the Leinster finalthis year only to be beaten by the eventual AllIreland finalists, . We are very optimistic thatboth this and last year’s minor panels will goon and bring a senior title back to theRapparees club in the none to distant future. Some members of our panel played with ourSenior team this year while many morebrought our Junior team to the only to bebeaten at that final hurdle.

I would like to thank all involved with thisteam not only this year but down through theyears. This panel of players have been

together from the time they first learned theybasic skills at 6 or 7 years of age. Since thenthey have won county finals at all gradesincluding the All Ireland Féile Football final.Thank you for all your hard work lads. I want tothank all the parents for their continuedsupport and encouragement over the yearsalong with all the coaches and selectors whocontinue to put in such a huge effort.

I want to pay tribute to all our sponsors, especially our main sponsor Sam McCauley. The Club is hugely indebted to you for yoursupport and generosity. Thanks Sam.

On behalf of all associated with theRapparees/Starlights club I hope that we willwitness a competitive and sporting game andthat the players on display will go on and playtheir part in bringing the glory days back intoWexford hurling.

Pettitt’s Senior Hurling Final

In any competition for The Greatest GAA Goalsat Croke Park Ever, perhaps somewhat uniquelyit’s two siblings from the same Wexford familywho would very definitely be in the runningamong the endless list of contenders, especiallyin the sliothar-and-camán code.

Very few would dispute claims for thehonour on behalf of the strikes of brother andsister Michael and Ursula Jacob, two attack-minded stylists mixing skilled stickwork andpower, brain and brawn to arrow unforgettablematch-turning, trajectory-defying strikes tothe back of the net on huge sporting occasionsat GAA headquarters.

In the golden glow in the memorybank of

magical memorable moments, Michael’ssensational winner against Kilkenny in the 2004Leinster senior hurling semi-final, along withUrsula’s double demolition-type net-busters v.Galway and Cork, respectively, in the All-IrelandCamogie finals of 2011 and 2012, will foreverhold special places for everyone who witnessedthese three strikes.

As the stunning scores were executed, eachwere invariably accompanied with a flash bycommentators of their famous surname in thecontext of their father Michael, an honours-laden legend of bygone days on the GAA scene, and, like so many others before him, whosegreatness and class was first honed in thecolours of his home parish club of Oulart/TheBallagh.

(By the way, in extolling the sportingprowess of Rory and Ursula, that’s not to forgettheir mother Breda (née McClean), a formersharpshooting member with Wexford Camogieteams in Leinster and All-Ireland matches inthe 1960s and ‘70s, nor indeed to neglect theirtwo other siblings Rory and Helena, both alsoAll-Ireland champions at club and collegelevels.).

Aside from sharing a family name, the Jacobchildren have plainly also inherited a greatrange of hurling abilities that reflect theirfather’s lifelong emphasis on endless skill-practice on the training ground. But then aswell, when the Jacob siblings pick up things likeGAA All-Star awards, the historic fact is that itwas their father who also set the headlines inthis respect in the past.

It was back in 1972 (forty years ago) thatMick Jacob became the first Wexford native toearn the distinction of being the county’s first-ever All-Star honouree. As a man who was oneof the finest centre-half backs in the game atthe time, it was a fitting tribute to someone whohas dedicated his life to the GAA.

He went on to earn further full All-Starrecognition in 1976 and 1977, carving out theNo. 6 berth as his own, and was a replacementAll-Star on three more occasions.

MICK JACOB - A MAN AND A CLASS APART

Magic moment: Mick Jacob of Oulart-The Ballaghmade GAA history 40 years ago this year when hebecame the first Wexford player to be included in aCarroll’s All-Star team, in recognition of a series ofsuperb displays. To the acclaim of fellow-players andfollowers everywhere, it was fitting reward for theman who had made the No. 6 jersey his own throughhis commanding presence, skilful style and graceunder pressure. Photo from the 1972 galapresentation event shows the Wexford centre-half-back receiving the award from P.J. Carroll’s managingdirector J.H.D. Ryan. (Photo: Seán Whelan).

Most of the sixty-six years of his life havebeen deeply involved with Gaelic Games. Hewas a mere strip of a lad when, as a 16-year-old, he manned the goal for Oulart in theirlosing appearance in the Co. Junior final in1962. That was his first club team place, andnow 50 years and countless matches later, theOulartwick man remains a staple fixture in theclub and with its teams as trainer, coach ormanager.

This year, for instance, he is manager of theunder-16 and under-18s, and selector with theunder-21s. If anything, his interest in his club isincreasing and not in any way diminishing fromhis earliest days with Oulart/The Ballagh overhalf-a-century back, helping them progress upfrom junior to make a breakthrough as a seniorhurling force in 1994 (Jacob was a teamselector that year), following a litany ofheartbreaking disappointments in countyfinals, five such defeats in SH alone.

At inter-county level, gifted Mick’s careerhas been festooned with honours. He won All-Ireland hurling medals in senior (sub. In 1968),Under 21 All Ireland in 1965 and Masters Over-40s, and played in the losing All-Ireland SHfinals in 1970, ’76 (in which he contributed asuperbly uplifting performance), and also in ’77.

National League, Leinster, Oireachtas andRailway Cup successes all earned winners’medals. He’s one of a select group with thedistinction of bringing home a national GAAtitle from a hurling final staged in Rome, on theoccasion Leinster won the inter-provincialseries in the Eternal City in 2003, when theOulart man was a and selector with the winningside that included his son Rory and currentWexford manager, Liam Dunne.

Mick Jacob’s sheer durability, not to mentionhis sublime skills, fierce will-to-win andpassionate commitment to Gaelic Games, hasspanned several generations. Helping thecareers of hurlers who went on to fame andglory, notably Martin Storey and Liam Dunne, was part of that contribution to the history ofthe club sporting its famous black-and-redcolours, playing alongside or coaching andtraining the full range of club teams in hurling, football and Camogie.

That Oulart/The Ballagh GAA and Camogieclub is one of the game’s powerhouses today is,without any doubt, due to modest, dedicatedand loyal servants like Mick Jacob, truly a manand a class apart.

Pat Herbert: Team ManagerPat, a serving Army Officer, began his hurling career with the famed Ahane club inLimerick and represented his county for fourteen years. The staunch, tenacious anduncompromising defender made the corner-back position his own and won twoMunster championships with Limerick along with two National League titles as wellas winning two Railway Cup medals while representing Munster. He has coached andmanaged teams in Limerick (Ahane), Kildare (Confey) and Tipperary (Toomevarra)-the latter to the All-Ireland club semi-final and he along with coach Sean Crowleyand selector Brendan O’Connor hope to steer Oulart-The Ballagh to their tenth seniortitle.

Brendan O’Connor, presently one of theselectors with the Oulart-The Ballagh team, came up through the ranks, winning countytitles in Juvenile, Minor and Under 21, tobecome a member of the senior panel in 1974,as substitute goal-keeper at the age of sixteenyears. The following year he lined out at corner-forward and thereafter usually donned thenumber 14 jersey until his retirement, in 1997,with three senior medals to his credit alongwith Intermediate and Junior B titles. Brendanrepresented Wexford from under 12 to under21, winning Leinster under 21 title in 1979, waspart of the Wexford senior panel in the 1980sand won All-Ireland Junior in 1985.He alsoserved as a selector with all Wexford under-agehurling teams and was a senior selector in2000, when Joachim Kelly was manager.

Brendan managed many Oulart-The Ballaghunder-age teams to great success also, principally the winning of All-Ireland Feile nanGael in 2001 and he is pleased that so manyof that panel have progressed to senior level.

The camogie club also benefitted fromO’Connor’s expertise as he was the managerwho steered them to the All-Ireland ClubChampionship 2011-2012, having won threeLeinster club titles.

Boxing was also a major interest of Brendanand he had the honour of winning eightLeinster titles and three All-Ireland titles as wellas representing Ireland on a few occasions. When questioned, Brendan admitted that someof his more memorable achievements werewinning his first senior title with Oulart-TheBallagh in 1994, managing the winning premierFeile na nGael team in 2001 and playing in theJunior B Final of 2003, flanked by sons Jamesand Ben and nephews Rory O’Connor and NickyKirwan. And, in his own words “It was an honourfor me to officiate at the opening of our club’ssecond pitch in 2011, alongside one of Oulart-The Ballagh’s greats, Michael Jacob senior”.Brendan’s son Ben is goalkeeper today, hisnephew Nicky Kirwan is a prolific scorer andaccurate free-taker while his nephew Rory OConnor (son of club Chairperson Richard“Butch” O Connor) is in his first year on thesenior panel. Daughter Aoife is a member of theall-conquering local camogie team

Brendan, along with manager Pat Herbertand fellow selector and coach, Sean Crowley arehoping to lead Oulart-The Ballagh to four- in-a –row of senior titles and the tenth in the club’shistory.

Brendan O’Connor Senior ‘Big Ben’ - A Profile

A Few Words from the Oulart-The Ballagh SecretaryIn my first year as Secretary of Oulart The Ballagh GAA Club I would liketo say what a privilege and honour it is for me to be involved in such agreat and successful club.To reach the County final for the ninth year in a row is a remarkableachievement for the club. Pettitts Senior Hurling Final

FINAL THOUGHTSTHE BRIAR

The Minor Premier hurling final will set thestand of Wexford Park rocking withintensity as both Naomh Éanna andRapparees have a lot to fight for. The Goreytown side have had a remarkable seasonwith Feile and Intermediate A successes, toname but a few, and they will seek evenmore glory on Sunday. 1981 was the lasttime they sought the title of Minorchampions. The Rapp's will be determinedto "right a wrong" as they approach freshfrom defeat in the football final on Sundaylast. The Enda's are a classy side with thedefensive pillar of Eoin Conroy and forwardswith flair like Fergal Bolger, Gearóid Cullen,Conor McDonald and David Kennedy. Forthe Enniscorthy side, well they have afountain of underage talent. DarraghPepper, Kevin Foley and Liam Ryan exploitthe weaknesses of any exposed defence. This prediction is a difficult one; giving thistop tipster a headache and heartache.Naomh Eanna were phenomenal in victoryover Crossabeg in the semi final while theRapparees sneaked past St Martin's. ForGorey's momentum, the title could bedrifting north of Vinegar Hill by a singlepoint but a draw would not be a hugesurprise.

The Pettitt's Senior HurlingChampionship final climaxes with thebattle of Oulart the Ballagh and FaytheHarriers. The Wexford town men are ledinto their challenge by workhorse Jim Berry.Paul Lambert, Kevin Gore and ShaneHoward attack with speed. The Harrier'sfuture potential is modelled by themagnificent County star Rhys Clarke. A

comprehensive victory over the Shelmaliersraised them to this weekend's final. Themen of Pairc Charman are seeking their firstSHC title success since 2001. It's hard tosum up the team that has ruled club hurlingin Wexford since the turn of the century. The attackers like Garrett Sinnott, NickyKirwan and Conor Goff are a nightmare forany defensive structures while DarrenStamp and Keith Rossiter maintain a soliddefence line up. Oulart's irreplaceableexperience gives them the title offavourites but still the Faythe Harriers willrelish the title of underdogs. Despiteneeding extra time to overcome Ferns inthe quarter final, it's likely that Oulart willcomplete their aim of four titles in a row. This victory is sure to be one worth notingas the red and black men potentially joinBuffers Alley and Rathnure as the only clubsto have sealed four championship titles in arow. An exhibition of skilful of hurling is aguarantee.

A statistic worth noting is that back in1981, both Naomh Eanna and FaytheHarriers contested and won the Minor andSenior finals respectively. Who's to say thathistory is bound to repeat itself?Championship of 2012 was an absolutecracker and these four teams were welldestined as they summarise the greatquality of hurling that is held across themodel county. Remember today folks, TheYella Bellies aren't dead yet!

Le gach dea ghuí,

The Briar.

Wexford Park, October 14 , 2012

Today’s Senior hurling final is a classic town vscountry clash, pitting reigning champions Oulart-theBallagh, chasing four-in-a-row, against FaytheHarriers.

The importance of having strong town teamscannot be over-estimated. Wexford have neverachieved glory without the swagger of the “townies”,from Artie Foley and Ned Wheeler in the fifties, PaulLynch and “Hopper” McGrath in the sixties, and GerCush, Billy Byrne, Adrian Fenlon and Larry O Gormanin 1996. It matters little if these players were fromthe heart of their town, or country boys wearing atown club’s colours, they always seem to have thatlittle bit of arrogance about them.

My own favourite town team was the Harriersoutfit of the late 1970’s- early ‘80’s. They featured ina number of classic matches, losing out to Rathnureby a single point after three epic encounters in 1979,before finally achieving glory two years later, seeingoff Buffer’s Alley. That team was sprinkled withcounty hurlers like Willie Murphy, Ned Buggy, Eddie“Heffo” Walsh and Liam Bennett, but my ownfavourite player was John “Stella” Walker. He was areal stylist, and his battles with Dan Quigley andColm Doran were worth the admission fee alone.Every club back then seemed to have one “touch”hurler, the likes of Seanie Kinsella (Gorey) Tom Byrne(Oulart) John Fleming (Cloughbawn) Seamus O Leary(Buffer’s Alley), John Codd (Rathnure), Arthur OConnor (St Martins) and Martin Quigley (Rathnure).

All the town teams were competitive then too.Rapparees won a County title in 1978, with PaudgeCourtney, Jim Rigley and a veteran Phil Wilsonprominent, and I remember both Naomh Eanna andGeraldine O Hanrahan’s in County semi-finals, led bythe likes of the Kinsellas and Sammy Walker (Gorey)and Jack Russell and the great John Nolan ( NewRoss). It’s great to see Naomh Eanna and the Rappsin the minor final to-day, and the hope must be thatboth sets of players feed into their clubs seniorteams, and are returning here soon to compete inCounty Senior finals. .

Of course, as a country boy, I’m not denigrating thewonderful success of Oulart-The Ballagh over thelast twenty years. Their domination of club hurling inWexford over that time has set a standard all otherclubs must aspire to. As a Ferns man, I would haveloved for us to have lowered their colours in thequarter-final, and we came damned close. As a Fernsman, (I can’t believe I’m saying this), it was saddeningto see Buffers Alley relegated out of the senior rankslast month. For the good of Wexford hurling, we needthem back near the top as soon as possible. We needall our clubs humming, town and country alike.Wouldn’t it be wonderful if today’s final was the startof an epic rivalry over three matches like thosegames in 1979, maybe not for the teams, butcertainly for the rest of us.

Good luck to all four teamsPat O’Toole

WE NEED OUR TOWN TEAMS STRONG

Wexford’s 3 in a Row‘Nothing Beats Being There’'Winning takes talent, to repeat takes character,'was the line made famous by former collegebasketball coach, the great John Wooden.

This Wexford Camogie team may have a waysto go to match and surpass the record of sevensuccessive NCAA titles that his UCLA sidemanaged, but who'd put it past this team loadedwith as much talent and character as Wexford GAAhas ever been blessed with.

2012 ended like the previous couple did forWexford; as the All-Ireland champions. It wasn'teasy, it never is. Regrets will always come withdefeats and the first of the season, against Cork inthe League Final, will always be there. Simplybecause trophies are always for winning.

But that spurred on this Wexford side to betterthings, like all of the defeats have done the lastfew years. It made the training harder, the resolvebetter and the hunger run deeper. It's notsomething Cork could match in the title decider,no doubt their heads still spin thinking aboutSeptember 16th.

Plenty of you reading this know all about these

attributes. Plenty of you know of the skill, the greatgames, the drama, the winning mentality. Plentyof you watch this side and travel the country to doso. More of you don't and this is directed at you.

As a Wexfordman or woman, you don't reallyknow what you're missing. Catherine O'Loughlinracing back to scoop away possession as anopposing forward is getting ready to shoot, MaryLeacy sending laser-beam passes into theforwards, Kate Kelly picking up possession anddictating attacks, Katrina Parrock running at, andbeating, defenders, Ursula Jacob scoring; it'sstorybook stuff.

You, as you sit there watching these 'Girls ofWexford' get honoured today, yet never go seethem; they've missed out on your support, supportthey deserve, but do you know what, you've missedout on more, you've missed as much great hurlingdrama and excitement as most people get in alifetime. Do yourself a favour, while this team isstill together. Get out and enjoy it, it doesn't lastforever, UCLA have won only one NCAA title sinceWooden retired in 1975, special achievement areto be enjoyed while they happen. Not throughword of mouth.

Dean Goodison.

LEGENDSSunday September 16th 2012, a day historywas made.

The girls of Wexford achieved an historic 3-In-a-row All Ireland Senior Camogie titles. Almost acentaury after Wexford footballers were the firstto complete the 4-in-a-row the girls put on one ofthe most magnificent displays seen in an AllIreland Final as they defeated Cork by 3-13 to 3-6. The manner of victory was impressive but someof the scores were of a caliber rarely seen on ahurling field, men or women.

For the second year in a row Ursula Jacobscored a goal worthy of goal of the year, herground stroke almost ripping the famous CrokePark netting. Indeed the first time pulling, theground strokes, the high fielding matchedanything ever seen in the men’s game.

Camogie has really come of age now with thefull pitch long established and made look small attimes by the striking of both sides.

It was an inspirational day and hopefully a newgeneration of hurlers, boys and girls will bespurred on to emulate the performance of theirheroes.

This team now ranks with Wexford greatestever stars, our Olympians, The Great hurling teamof the 1950’s and the Four in a row team of acentaury ago. History was made and history willreflect on these times and this team as somethingvery special. I hope we all appreciate what we areexperiencing and how special this group of playersand their achievements are.

Only one word to describe them: LEGENDS.

Pettitts Senior Hurling Final

I am now 16 months in the Job and now Ifully realise what a huge challenge I havetaken on. If Wexford people knew what I’vealready done in my life to play hurling andachieve, I’ve no doubt the lads in the whitecoats would be called, and my applicationto this task would continue in the samevain.

Many people have said I was cracked totake up this job as I left a good, pensionable and secure job. Maybe they’reright, but I’m doing what I’ve always donein my life and I’m following my heart notmy head. I believe I have a contribution tomake and that it will make a difference inthe long term.

With our well publicised financial positionand other obstacles, it has been a difficultyear but the Coaching Office continue tomove forward. There is no doubt, a job inthe GAA requires great enthusiasm tosurvive and there is a huge voluntaryelement to our roles. So why do we do it?Simple, we love the GAA and its games. Ihave met inspirational people over the lastfew months, People who‘s sole aim in life isto unselfishly serve the GAA. I admire andsalute these unsung heroes.

It’s not often my staff in Marion Doyle,Denis Doyle, George O’Connor, Paul Carty,Joe Kearns, Luke O’Hanlon and KevinKennedy get the credit they deserve so I’d

like to thank them publicly for theircommitment, hard work and supportduring my time as Games Manager to date.

Margaret Doyle and Maura O’Connorcontinue to be a great link to the adult sideof things. I also thank my Leinstercolleagues in Shane Flanagan, Lester Ryanand all in Portlaoise and Croke Park fortheir direction, advice and support. I thankthem for their recent positive comments inrelation to our progress in Wexford. I’m agreat believer in team work and believe asa team we are certainly working, improvingand moving Wexford forward. I will have amore detailed report on all our activitiesavailable at the County Convention andthis will be available to clubs for review.

I am very conscious of the responsibilitythat goes with my role and how importantit is for the Wexford Coaching Office tosucceed. I approach this job with the sameenergy, enthusiasm, commitment and workethic I had as a player. I wish both teamstoday a good final. We are into winnertakes all territory.

If I could offer some humble advice to allthe players and mentors, remember howprivileged you are to be in Wexford Park onCounty Senior Hurling final day, and enjoyevery minute.
