PRESIDENTS REPORT

The season 2018-19 saw Cluden Cricket Club field 17 teams at Junior and Senior levels and in our 96th year since formation we fielded our first women’s team accompanied by three girl’s teams.

The growth in the club has been remarkable and has not gone unnoticed by the Bayside Council, which has now begun developing new club rooms at William Street. Hopefully if all goes to plan they may be ready for use by November/December this year. The new rooms will provide much improved facilities and will also include three practice nets in much the same area as the existing net area.

All teams played the season with the right spirit and although the club had three teams qualify for finals, we just fell short of winning a Grand Final berth. The First XI played some great cricket throughout the year and finished the season 2nd on the ladder, which gave them two opportunities to win a place in the Grand Final. Sadly, having been beaten by top side Kingston Heath in the first semi-final and a further loss to Omega, it meant the end of the season.

Club ChampionCongratulations to Kieran John, who for the second year in a row, won the Club Champion Award for his contribution with both bat and ball. He contributed 458 runs through the season including two centuries which gave him 50.89 average for the season.

Our Volunteer BaseA club of this size relies on so many volunteers and I would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody who assists in all the various ways. Without your valued contributions it would not be possible to see so many teams competing throughout the season.

Overseas PlayersI would also like to thank our two overseas visitors from the UK, Jack Twine and Sam Lawro, who not only played throughout the season, but were also actively involved in helping out around the club particularly coaching many of the junior teams. Sam was a very entertaining MC at our very successful Trivia night. On behalf of everyone at the club we thank them for coming 12,000 miles to play for Cluden. We are looking forward to seeing them back down at Cluden in the future.

Our First Inductee For SECA Hall of FameThis year was the first time that a Cluden player had been admitted into the SECA Hall of Fame, and it was justly deserved that our club legend John Bennett was included in this year’s inductees. John is considered without doubt Cluden’s finest player, over a 30 year playing career John scored over 8000 runs and had played over 300 games for the Club.John’s name is all over the honour boards, having won best batting 11 times, best bowling three times and was President for 11 years.

Congratulations John, your contribution to the club was truly

outstanding and entry into the Hall of Fame was thoroughly deserved.

ObituariesRichard Allan Laidler – “Laids” – 28 December 1960-10 May 2019

The Club lost one of its finest gentleman Richard Laidler, who sadly passed away on the 10th May 2019. Richard had a distinguished Cricket career and played for the following clubs.

• Carlton Cricket Club• St Bernard’s Cricket Club Essendon• Tee Tree Gully CC Adelaide District• Darwin Cricket Club• Japan Cricket National Coach• Japan Cricket U15s, U19s National Coach• Japan National Team player (World Cup Group 3)• Cluden Cricket Club

He was involved in cricket all his life and we were lucky enough to have him as part of our great club for a period of 10 years.Coaching was his love and from the moment he walked into Cluden he was always showing the youth and senior players what he had learned over his cricket journey. He coached the senior side and attended numerous junior games. His love for cricket always shone through when he saw junior players push into the senior sides and supported them all the way. His smile, his sense of humour and his catch cry `just enjoy yourself` will never be forgotten.

In the 80s, Laids played district cricket in an era where Australian players went back to play for their clubs. He mixed it with the best. That fighting spirit continued with him playing games for the Cluden 3rd XI right up until last season. Thank you Laids. You were a member, player, coach and mate to our club.

Laids will always be lovingly remembered at Cluden Cricket Club.

My final season as PresidentI have been President of the club for six years and since I am now fully retired, I have moved to the more relaxed pace of the Mornington Peninsula. Given the size of the club it requires a local who can dedicate time and focus to the ever demanding needs of a large club. To this end, we will be electing a new president to the club at the AGM who can hopefully steer the club to its centenary celebration in 2023.

It has been a fascinating journey watching the club grow into one of the largest in the area and it would not have been possible without the contribution of so many loyal and dedicated members of the Club and to this end I thank everybody who has contributed in so many ways.

I will remain a loyal supporter of the C’s and will be a frequent spectator/scorer and look forward to enjoying a cold beer in our new club rooms!

PAVILION RE-DEVELOPMENT

In late 2016, the Cluden Committee nominated a small sub-committee to work on the ever-present William Street Reserve re-development. While at the time, Bayside Council had ear-marked William Street Reserve for an upgrade, the timing and resource commitment was still relatively unknown. Given the circumstance and overall poor state of the pavilion, it was felt that a sub-committee could conduct an audit of the site and provide Bayside Council with a club driven proposal for the re-development that aligned with the vision and needs of the club over the next 50 years. In early 2017, the proposal was presented to the Mayor, CEO and other senior Councillors, receiving a strongly positive reception.

Construction commenced in early April, and amazing progress has been made over the last 3 months. With an expected completion date before Christmas this year, we are excited to move in to our new club rooms and make them our own. The builders have layed the foundations, frame and are now progressing with the constuction of walls seeing the overall structure take shape. The new net facility is being constructed in parallel and will be ready for use ahead of the upcoming season. The third net will provide the club with the ability to cater for the current number teams and enable continued growth over the coming years. The new net facility will align with Cricket Victoria and Cricket Australia guidelines and will be a welcome upgrade in terms of size and quality.

Not only do we thank the club and its supporter’s at large, the committee, and the pavilion upgrade sub-committee for their continued persistence over many years, but also to Bayside Council who have worked equally hard to ensure they can best manage the conflicting needs of various stakeholders including the club and the broader community.

TREASURERS REPORT

The 2018/2019 was another successful season off the field for Cluden. I’m delighted to report a profit of $6,224. Cash reserves are $34,790 which is split up of $14,765 of capital works fund and $20,025 of general club funds.

As the redevelopment of the pavilion is well underway, the club will be required to purchase several items of equipment in the upcoming season. In addition, we may not have access to a canteen for a significant portion of the season. We do not anticipate that the canteen profit of $5,228 in 2018/19 will be replicated in 2019/20. Therefore, the committee has tried to build up cash reserves this season to ensure that we can fund the equipment purchases in the coming months. Prior to the commencement of the 2018/19 season, we resurfaced our centre wicket pitch as our existing pitch had reached the end of its life. The cost to replace the synthetic wicket was $5,287. We obtained three separate quotes and compared all surfaces before selecting a supplier. Our application for a grant from Cricket Victoria was successful, therefore they contributed $2,374 towards the new pitch. The net cost of resurfacing the pitch was $2,913. The cost has been deducted from our capital works fund and is not included in the profit of $6,224.

The canteen made a tidy profit of $5,228, which was a significant improvement on the prior year. The increase was largely due to Tom Fraser’s fancy dress beer pong night and the past player’s day. Our first ever trivia night was a resounding success, we made a profit of $1,800 from the night. A big thankyou to David Brennan for supplying 20 cases of Lion brand beer! Once our pavilion has been redeveloped, we hope to hold trivia night and other functions in our new rooms!

Our membership fees were up by $6,773, due to new member registrations, our first ever women’s team and a slight increase in fees. Going forward, Cricket Australia will require registrations to be paid online through their portal. It will reduce the administrative time for processing registrations but it will cost the club approximately $700 due to the credit card commission charged on each transaction. Unfortunately, we were unable to secure a Bunnings Fundraiser BBQ this year. The BBQ’s are extremely popular so it is now down to a ballot system. Hopefully we will secure a BBQ next season.

Our uniform sales were considerably higher on this year, which was partially due to new member registrations, a wave of kids growing out of old uniforms & the sale of our new stock of shorts. It is also important to note that junior uniform stock was pre-purchased from Blackchrome Sportswear for the upcoming season and is reflected in our stock on hand of $8,580 at 30 June 2019. Therefore, the uniform purchases & stock on hand is slightly inflated compared where it otherwise would be, but we are ready to go for the new season. The committee will continue to aim to reduce the amount of stock on hand going forward. Our outlay on match balls this year of $4,807 was lower than last year due to excess stock from the previous season. We were lucky enough to have Peter Burke provide his coaching services to both senior & junior teams throughout the season. Unfortunately, a number of sessions were cancelled due to

bad weather, however the feedback about Peters coaching from players and parents was fantastic. We hope to continue our partnership with Peter in the coming season. Thank you to the parents who donated a combined total of $615 towards the coaching fund. As at 30 June 2019, $142 of these donations were held by the Australian Sports Foundation. The balance will be paid to Cluden in the 2020 financial year. Thank you to all of our coaches for the time dedicated to our various teams. In particular, I want to thank the two Englishmen Jack Twine & Sam Lawro who ran training sessions two nights a week, coached Friday night teams and also coached Milo Cricket & T20 Blast. Overall our outlay on coaching & coaching courses for the season was $6,965.

The club spent a further $2,828 on new club playing & training equipment throughout the season. A grant of $2,721 was received at the end of June 2019 from the Victorian government for girl’s cricket. As the funds will be spent in the 2019/20 season, we have added this into the balance sheet and we will report this as revenue next season once the funds are spent.Major capital projects targets. As mentioned in my report last year, the committee has identified major capital projects that the club would like to fund in the coming seasons. Our target for the completed 2018/19 season was to resurface the centre wicket, which was successfully completed. We will now turn our focus to the following:

• Purchase of new assets for new pavilion (2020 & 2021 financial years)

• Purchase of new lightweight bowling machine (Next 1-3 years)

• Construction of electronic scoreboard (Next 5 years)

In order to fund the construction & maintenance of an electronic scoreboard we will require sponsorship. At the present point of time the only item lacking in our profit & loss is sponsorship. Any assistance in generating sponsors will be gladly welcomed by the overworked committee! Despite this, we are delighted to announce that Hotel Brighton have joined as a sponsor for the upcoming season. We look forward to building a strong partnership with Hotel Brighton in years to come.

Finally, a huge thank you to Mitch Hurley for his huge contribution to the club as president. Mitch has left an indelible mark of class on the club since he first joined as president back in 2013. Mitch has led from the front and has imparted his strong values upon the club. The construction of the white picket fence was Mitch’s brain child. It must have been Mitch’s suave English accent combined with his nous from brokering banking deals that convinced the council to construct a white picket fence around the ground. Absolutely nobody else would have been able to pull off such a heist! We are the envy of all other clubs in Bayside. Mitch has signed off his presidency in style by once again persuading the council to construct a modern pavilion with an English style pitched roof along with clock. The development fits in perfectly with the picket fence and without Mitch’s polite but subtle negotiations, we may have ended up with a less desirable result.

Thank you, Mitch for all your efforts!

the season, and their T10 clash on MRV Day.

THANKS

Through out the season the support of parents and other helpers allows the girls to have a great cricketing experience. Special thanks though goes to Chris Taylor, Dan Warden and Trudi Shepard, whose work coaching and managing is hugely appreciated.

SENIOR WOMEN

For the first time Cluden fielded a women’s team in a competitive competition. The team played in the CSBW competition, where following a series of T10 grading games we were placed in Division 2.

The team were compromised of all first time players of varying ages, and were then complemented by some of the u16 team playing up.

Through out the season the speed of improvement across the women was a sight to behold. The team more than competed, and in February won their first match against Bentleigh Cricket Club at William Street.

Among other highlights during the season were playing on the turf at Aspendale twice, Paige Hinrichs and Jess Linnell representing CSBW in the representative match against their northern equivalents and Jess Linnell winning the division 2 batting award for CSBW.

More important than those achievements is acknowledging Jo Dougan, Amanda Stark, Paige Hinrichs, Jess Linnell, Jessie Pham, Alyssa Privitelli, Monica Ward, Amy Bismire, Louisa Marrollo, Allie Amey, Celeste Lavender and Allison Hodge for taking the risk to play a game that had not played before. Also thanks to the u16s who helped through out the season, not just playing wise but also in the joint practices.

GIRLS U16 AND U13

The Cluden Girls Cricket program continues to grow and this season we had 3 girls teams in what was our 3rd season. With an u16 team and 2 Stage 1 u13 teams playing in the All Girls Cricket Competition.

U16

All the girls teams had successful years, with the u16 team, after one win across their first 2 seasons together winning 5 matches as the girls continued to improve and grow upon their undoubted talent. This was especially impressive given they were a bottom aged team.

It was a real team effort as well through out the season as every player contributed, and had stand out performances.

U13

In the Wednesday night competition we had two stage 1 teams who both improved throughout the season, and had teams who really enjoyed their cricket. Whilst there is no ladder for the stage 1 the girls experienced succcesses on the field, continued to show their joy in playing together.

Highlights were the Wednesday night derby’s that punctuated

On top of the Under 16As reaching the final, we also had our Under 14Cs and Under 12Cs reach the finals. Unfortunately, there was no premiership shield for Cluden to lift - but all the players and coaches should be commended on the way they conducted themselves during finals.

Congratulations to the number of boys and girls who were selected to participate in trials for various representative cricket teams across the state. A number of players made the final cut and showed off their strong abilities throughout the carnivals.

With still two months until the first ball will be bowled in the season, it shows just how strong our club is, given we have had a number of enquires to join Cluden CC for season 2019-20.

Another big season is coming up with the renovations on the clubrooms not far from finishing, with the redevelopment also giving us another net which will certain help us in a number of aspects going forward. More information will be coming soon of how Cluden approaches 2019-20, as well as more information regarding Cluden’s winter program moving forward.

Lastly, a massive thank you to everyone who assisted this year. Without the large number of volunteers at each team - from the parents who did the coffee run on Saturday morning, to the parent who scored for the very first time, or the coaches who gave up their valuable time at training and on match day - it could not have run as smoothly as it did this season.

I can’t wait for the first ball to be bowled on season 2019-20 and here’s hoping we once again take things to another level at Cluden Cricket Club.

What a year we had. As per the norm over the last five years, the Cluden junior program again grew to record numbers, placing us in the top handful of clubs across the entire association. We introduced an Under 16 girls team for the first time in Cluden’s existence, while we again had a full group of keen and excited rookie players don the yellow cap for the first time. Our MasterBlasters (formerly T20 Blast) and JuniorBlasters (formerly milo in2cricket) were again well attended and will continue to help us for the future. A big thanks goes to Matt Proctor and the members of the senior 1st and 2nd XI who assisted with running these sessions weekly.

We made the early decision to team up with Elsternwick to form a strong Under 16A side, who made it into the finals before being narrowly defeated. The boys deserve plenty of credit for the way they handled themselves in the somewhat heated final, with the mature and guidance shown by coaches Hugo Butler and Joe Micari clearly rubbing off on the boys.

It was great to have UK duo SJ Lawro and Jack Twine involved in coaching a number of teams throughout the summer. Their presence was an added boost for our male and female players, with the pair providing plenty of fun at training sessions and using their cricketing smarts to help out on game day. Fingers crossed we will see them back down at William Street soon.

As mentioned above, our Girls program continued to grow and with three junior teams in season 2018-19, it made us one of the biggest female clubs in terms of our numbers. Andrew Bath, Chris Taylor, Dan Warden and many others deserve a huge pat on the back for their hard commitment to our program, where we certainly are the place to play cricket in Bayside if you are a male or female cricketer.

The father-son team in the Senior yet again was a hit, with a number of different family combinations throughout the season.

It was also great to see a number of juniors progress up the ranks in the 1st and 2nd XI, even if it was just a move from the 3rd XI to the 2nd XI at certain stages for some of our teenagers. Out of the 22 players who represented the club in senior finals, 16 of them came through our junior program. It certainly shows we are going in the right direction as a family club, with a fantastic relationship between the junior and senior aspects of the club.

On Saturday’s, it wasn’t uncommon to see many juniors hanging around the clubrooms – watching on and playing continuous games of net cricket – as the senior teams battled out on the middle of the ground. The midweek senior T20s were a hit, with a large contingent of our junior teams watching on as the Big Bash came to William Street.

Peter Burke’s coaching sessions were also a huge hit with the boys and girls, where he was able to run individual and team sessions right throughout the season.

145. Omega then upped the ante and we were left chasing a significant, though not insurmountable 315 to win. We started strongly, but lost wickets in clumps to be 5 for 90, and then after recovering somewhat to 5-140, lost two wickets quickly after tea.

Then in one of the highlights of the season a partnership of 97 between Sam Larkworthy (32) and Arvin Dora (81 not out) gave us a glimmer of hope. Arvin’s innings was even more impressive given it was with a broken finger. Again, we had shown our fortitude and fight to take it deep but in the end had left ourselves with too much to do as we lost wickets at the wrong times.

Defeat hurt, and we hadn’t achieved what we wanted to, yet had the qualities of the club that we represent in the way in which we played the game. We always fought hard, backed each other and looked to play in the right spirit regardless of the situations we found ourselves in.

That meant, that despite never really putting in a complete performance all season, we were able to achieve a creditable third overall and have the foundations to go again in what will be a new competition format, with more importantly, the new clubrooms the club deserves, as a home.

Thank you to all who made the season possible from the playing group of 16 who represented Cluden throughout the season and the players across the club who we practice with week in and week out.

Special thanks also to the often-unsung work of Ruth and John Stokes for all they do at home matches (and beyond), to Tim Balmer for his scoring, to Peter Burke for his guidance and advice throughout the season. Thanks to the supporters, who come down week after week and live our highs and lows with, and to the juniors who make the club.

Finally, as a senior group, we would like to acknowledge the undoubted impact that Richard Laidler (1960-2019) had on the club, and in particular the senior group. The successes, and regular finals appearances, owe no small part to the work he did with the group, officially between 2014/15 to 2015/16, but, in reality up until his passing.

Richard was a true champion of the club whose words and deeds will no doubt continue to inspire in to 2019/20 and beyond.

Here’s to using that inspiration, with new clubrooms as a backdrop, to win our way into Longmuir!

James Stewar tSECOND XI

The Second XI had a season of highs and lows. Despite some early season form from Alex Gibson and Sam Larkworthy, we were unable to capitalise and won just one of our first four games. As per last season, a massive win against Washington Park kick

The season might have started in October, but preparation for 2018-19 began much earlier after preseason training sessions at the newly-revamped Junction Oval, plus our annual team building event.

Despite starting the season with the need for at least three new faces, we held high hopes of going one better than our previous season haul, where we had finished as runners-up.

Our opening match was against Melbourne Hellenic, with the win setting us up for a strong first-half of the year, where we lost just one match before Christmas, against the table topping Kingston Heath. We went into the break in second spot and were yet to hit our straps as a team, with Marcus Lavender leading the team superbly.

Our two overseas boys from Royal Wootton Bassett had settled in well, with Jack Twine providing to be a great find behind the stumps and SJ Lawro showing off his all round talents. His four catches in the first game got his season off to a flyer, while his off-breaks were extremely effective in all three formats of the game.

Pre-Christmas highlights included hundreds for Kieran John and Rob Hurley, while there was a six-wicket haul for Andrew Williams.

The other highlight was the introduction and success of former club juniors who have progressed into senior ranks, with Joe Micari, Sam Larkworthy and Alex Gibson all contributing throughout the season and showing that we have plenty of reasons to be excited for years to come.

It also highlights why this is such a great club, in that we have a junior program where players can feed into the senior program and be successful.

Post-Christmas we stumbled against fellow top four contender Moorabbin West, before bouncing back against eventual premiers Omega, thanks to another hundred from Kieran John.

A win in Round 9 against Hampton Central meant we ended the season in 2nd place, meeting Kingston Heath in the first final.

We travelled to Kingston Heath and won the toss on a warm day. We recovered from 2-11 to 2-68, and at 5-131 we are set for a competitive score led by Kieran John’s outstanding 88. But a collapse of 5-13 meant we were always on the back foot as Kingston Heath chased down the target late on day two.

The second final pitted us against Omega, where we were forced to field first in the scorching heat. Omega’s openers batted well as we tried different options, but it was not until the 42nd over that we took our first wicket with the score at

We won one game and lost two games in close circumstances, not that results mattered as this is seen as a development team with a view to giving as many as possible the opportunity to bat and bowl. We continued to “blood” new players which is good for the future of the club. It was also good to see a few new Dads play. Approximately 35 players were used through the seven games played thus was almost impossible to have anyone qualify to win batting or bowling A few highlights for the season included: • Sam Gunson making 50 in his debut season for the Seniors• Pat Burrows for his continual improvement with the bat

and behind the stumps wicketkeeping• Continual improvement of U14 players Josh Dougan-Bath,

Jack Stewart and Dom Spicuglia The main highlight for me was seeing new players taking their first wicket or making their first runs in Senior Cricket for the club. Looking forward to seeing the above and many of the other players continue their improvement in higher grades for the club in the future. Thanks to everyone who supported me throughout the season.

started our season chasing down 266 with an over to spare. This game was again the highlight of our season.

The second half of the season was far better, going undefeated until the last game – a tense low scoring affair against Hampton United.

Despite the loss, we were still good enough to qualify for finals which was a great achievement, considering the number of different players who played for us this year, and the fact that we did not run out with the same team twice during the season.

Unfortunately we couldn’t reproduce our mid-season form in the final and lost to Hampton United for the second game in a row.

Quality performances from Alex Gibson, Sam Larkworthy, Matt Balmer, Hugo Butler, Connor Blaskett, Sam Lielups, Tom Fraser, Joe Spicuglia, Nick Bancroft, Josh Verlin and many more during the season made it an enjoyable year.

Thanks to all who pulled on the yellow cap for the 2nds this year. Carn the Cs!

Troy BeardTHIRD XI

The 2018/19 cricket season for the third eleven was an eventful one as well as a season that went quick. With only nine games in the season, it was also the first time in six years the third XI did not make the finals.

The year consisted of four wins and a draw, some of the wins were of a hard-fought nature coming down to the wire.

Playing at Dendy Park instead of Elsternwick Park was a real winner and very popular with the boys. We really hope we can play at Dendy Park again in the future.

The season also saw quite a few juniors play which was great to see. To have them every week would be even better.

An excellent year from Ben Newell with the bat and Drew Taylor with the ball saw them take out the trophies.

We look forward to going around again in 2019/20 and hopefully getting back on the winning list and making our way back into finals.

Tim BalmerFOURTH XI

The Fourth XI were part of a trial of a One Day Competition for the season in K Grade This was seen as a way to reduce the number of enforced one dayers due to forfeits, unfortunately it didn’t solve the problem as we had to forfeit two games and were on the end of receiving two forfeits, so as it worked out we only played seven games
