MEMBER NEWS:REPORT & PHOTOS ON THUNDERBIRD APPRECIATION DAY – IN KINGS PARK SHOPPING CENTER

from Dennis Benfante: Thunderbird Appreciation Day event: May 21st: A great big thank you to our President, Joe Marchione and the LITC President Elliott Weiner for a very successful "First Annual Thunderbird Appreciation Day" . With a total of 40 T'Birds, from little to big everyone who participated had a great time. The weather was perfect and the hero sandwiches hit the spot. Great day Great Cars, but most importantly Great People" !

From Elliott Weiner: Sunday, May 21st/National Thunderbird Appreciation Day: What can I say. If you were not there you missed a great turnout. Forty Thunderbirds were counted, and it did not include some Mustangs, Galaxies, and throw in a Ford police car with a working siren. Mother Nature kissed us with fantastic weather. …Not a cloud in the sky and rain is only a four letter word. Both clubs did themselves proud. For food, both clubs shared the cost and we purchased three three foot heroes with salads. We even threw a 50/50 for cash and Ed Ceraso went home with

SECRETARY’S REPORT:

PREPARED BY: JOHN CATTONAR, CLUB SECRETARY

Our May meeting began at 7:20.After the Pledge of Allegiance, President Joe Marchione introduced 5 new members to our club: Jim Lornero, who attended our April meeting, Stan Kazinski, Stephen Katsur and Ken and Donna Marenus.

Pete Cochrane reported a closing balance in the treasury of $1,731.24 even though our club covered part of the cost of the Spring Dust-off brunch. The brunch was a great success with 28 members attending and 11 T-Birds on display outside.

We then discussed up-coming shows and also emphasized signing up early for our all Ford Show in July. Next up we had an excellent presentation by Sal Perrotta on the cooling system used in our Thunderbirds. He addressed different approaches to keeping our birds cool in the summertime, with nice slides and charts with up to date info. on the water pumps, thermostats, etc. Afterward we discussed other things that also can be done to keep that engine cool this summer when out cruising.

The meeting ended at 8:38 p.m. with Tom Rabbene winning $57.00 from the 50/50 – and $58.00 to the club. Sometimes it pays to come to the meetings. Right Tom?

$90.00. I want to thank all who participated in the event. …Plus a high five to Joe Marchione President of TONY who, with his advanced culinary skills handled the cutting of the hero’s, and nobody got hurt. For me a big smile, and I thank you all again!

Field of Wheels Show - May 20th

Stanley Rusinyak of Valley Stream took home the top prize for his cherry red 1958 Pontiac Bonneville:

…attending the Newsday’s Field of Wheels car show were Dennis Benfante, John Cattonar, Ed Ceraso, Tom Grippa, Stan Matusewicz & Charlie Psarreas. Howard Kroplick was there too, with his new brown ’48 Tucker. Also on the grounds were an unrestored Studebaker, and a gorgeous blue 12 cylinder Lincoln. There was a mixed weather situation – clouds, sun and then- walla – flash rain that caused craziness with some guys quickly covering their cars or putting up their convertible car tops. Overall, it was a good day –fun with many friends – even checked out the many vendors. Flo's Food Truck was available too! (gotta make plans to cruise to FLO’S summer place in Blue Point during July)

The Newsday Field of Wheels Exhibition & Show, an annual classic and new-model car expo, drew enthusiasts to Newsday headquarters in Melville for a glimpse at hundreds of cars that competed for awards.

The Thunderbird club sends its heartfelt condolences to David Gordon on the passing of his father on May 20 th 2017. David – please accept our most sincere sympathies – our thoughts are with you and your family at this time.

TECH TIPS:

Flexible Brake Hoses:

Flex hoses on our T-Birds are made of two layer of rubber with internal braided cord between the layers for strength. The following is a list of conditions to determine if flex brake hose replacement is necessary-

1. Cracks in the exterior covering2. Abrasions or cuts in the covering from rubbing against other components.3. When there is a clean area around the portion of the hose as it enters the fittings at either end. This usually caused by the weight of a component being suspended by the hose.4. If the hose is brittle and does not flex easily5. If the hose restricts flow in either direction.6. The lettering on the hose should be in a straight line. If twisted, the hose may have internal damage that is not readily noticeable (ply separation).7. Dampness or leaking of fluid around fittings.8. Swelling or blistering of the hose from fluid pressure.9. A broken outer cover that exposes braid to road debris and moisture. This usually occurs near and end fitting or mounting bracket.

Some experts suggest replacing hoses every 3 to 5 years. Whenever an axle has more than one hose, both should be replaced at the same time if one has to be replaced because of internal damage.
