ROUND 2
Adult club members are invited to be part
of this monthly challenge match between
our clubs. An acceptable standard of play is
required and if you would like to be in-
volved with the return challenge match, let
Kevin know ASAP or put your name on the
sheet on the noticeboard. Play will com-
mence at 1pm with a BBQ at the end of
play.
ROUND 1.
The first in a series of monthly social tennis
matches between the Ulladulla Club and
the Bateman’s Bay club was held on Satur-
day 23 March at Batemans Bay. This had
been organised between our coach Kev
Murphy and the Bay club president Garry
McNally.
There were 4 ladies and 10 men from Ul-
ladulla who played at the inter club social
event. As it was the first time it was run,
there was no format for the day but just
social sets of the ladies playing together, the
men and then mixed which allowed organis-
ers to get a feel for the grading of all for
future matches.
The winning Club on the day was decided
on the match between club presidents and
their partners with Ulladulla’s Pauline McIl-
veen and Kev Murphy defeating Garry
McNally and his partner Deb.
Thanks go to Bateman’s Bay club member
Mark Hood who sponsored the day by
supplying the meat and salads for dinner
after the match.

It is with
sadness that
we report the passing
of our dear past mem-
ber, Ron Maddox, on
the weekend of 27-28
April. Ron was into his
94th year and had con-
tinued to play tennis
with the Thursday morning men’s social
group up until 2012 and would often call up
to the courts to have a coffee and chat with
the boys after that.
Ron moved to Ulladulla from Mt. Isa in 1984
and joined the tennis club where he became
part of that community volunteering to help
in any way he could. He was a great one for
encouraging people to buy raffle tickets at our
tournaments and to chat and encourage our
junior players. He contributed to the cost of
their annual Xmas party as well as playing the
role of Santa Claus on a number of occasions.
Ron also attended our annual Cancer Council
charity day where he loved to talk to the
ladies and again he was very generous with his
contributions. We will miss you Ron.
RIP RON MADDOX

THURSDAY NIGHT LADIES COMPETITION
POINT SCORES AT 11 APRIL 2019
The final of the summer season of the Monday Night competi-
tion was held on April 8 between the teams of Paul Metzler,
Rob Hargreaves, Darren Wray and Dave Schultz against Nick Marsh (filling in for Mark Stiller) , Natasha Phillips-Edgar, Ben
Hatcher and Henry Carroll.
The match was anyone’s after the first 3 sets with both teams
having won 15 games each. However strong play from the young
guns Natasha and Henry in the last 3 sets saw their team pull
away by 38 games to 25 with Henry winning all of his sets adding
24 games to the winners score and Natasha showing she can
mix it with the best on the courts.
It was great to see most of the other players also there on the
night who enjoyed a social hit and stayed for the celebrations
and presentations afterwards.
The Autumn comp started on April 29 so contact Kev 0417 359

come; however, you must be a club member to participate.

CANCER COUNCIL MORNING MUNCH
Last month we brought you the story of club
volunteer Per Gunn and the amazing work
he is doing with the garden on the hill behind
courts 8 and 9.
We would like to thank Michael and Linda
Riley who have donated a wooden sign to be
erected in “Per’s Garden”. Michael has a
special talent for creating beauty from timber
and we are fortunate that he had the time to
create this lovely sign in recognition of Per’s
work. We are privileged to have amazing
people in our club.
THANK YOU
Ross John-
son has been
a member of
Milton Ul-
ladulla Dis-
trict Tennis
Association
for many
years and
has played
social tennis
for most of
that time. He plays regularly on Tuesday
mornings, Wednesday nights and Saturday
afternoons and often brings something yum-
my for all the players to share.
Currently Ross runs the Wednesday night
Mixed Social Tennis Group and has been
doing it since 2016. Ross manages the
‘Wednesday Night Social tennis’ Facebook
Page for players to check who is playing each
week and confirm if it will still be on.
Prior to that Ross helped run the Saturday
afternoon group for a few years. He also
helps Lynne on a Tuesday when needed.
Members appreciate the time and effort Ross
gives and especially to enable social tennis to
be played at night, even through the winter.
Thank you Ross.
CLUB VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH
ROSS JOHNSON
A small group of interested club members
attended this training session on 17 April
conducted by Paramedic Mark, as we now
have a defibrillator located in the clubhouse.
We hope we are never called on to have to
use it, but it is satisfying to know that we
could possibly save a person’s life until the
ambulance and paramedics arrive.
The most important thing to remember is to
assess the patient correctly. They must be
unconscious and have stopped breathing to
require the use of the defibrillator. Com-
mence chest compressions and call 000 im-
mediately whilst someone fetches the def-
ibrillator from the clubhouse. The machine
itself is reasonably easy to use as it steps you
through the procedure visually and audibly.
DEFIBRILLATOR TRAINING
PLAY TENNIS - LIVE LONGER Extracted from a survey conducted by
Steven Salzberg who is the Bloomberg
Distinguished Professor of Biomedical
Engineering, Computer Science & Biosta-
tistics at Johns Hopkins University, USA.
Tennis might just be the best thing you can
do to extend your life. A new study from
Denmark shows that playing tennis may ex-
tend your life by nearly 10 years.
It’s been well established for a while now
that exercise helps you live longer.
The authors of the new study wanted to
look at other sports activities not just run-
ning. In particular they looked at tennis, bad-
minton, soccer, jogging, cycling, calisthenics,
swimming, and health club activities (which
included treadmills, ellipticals and weights).
The bottom line compared to a sedentary
lifestyle, playing tennis extends one’s life
expectancy by 9.7 years. The other sports all
provided benefits too, though tennis was the
clear winner.
Here’s a summary:
Tennis 9.7 years Badminton 6.2 years
Soccer 4.7 years Cycling 3.7 years
Swimming 3.4 years Jogging 3.2 years
Calisthenics 3.1 years Health Club 1.5
years
Surprisingly, one part of the study revealed
that spending more time exercising did not
correlate with the greatest benefits. In fact,
people who spent the longest time on their
exercise was the health club group, who
showed the smallest increase in longevity.
One possible reason for tennis, badminton,
and soccer doing so well is that out of the 8
sports studied, these are the ones that re-
quire 2 or more people and involve social
interaction.
As the authors explain, “belonging to a group that meets regularly promotes a
sense of support, trust, and commonality,
which has been shown to contribute to a
sense of well-being and improved long-term
health”.
Or it might be that the type of exercise you
get in tennis - short bursts of activity rather
than slow, steady plodding exercise - might
be better for you. The authors noted that
“short repeated intervals of higher intensity
exercise appear to be superior to continu-
ous moderate intensity physical activity for
improving outcomes”.
If you’re still sceptical, the only other study
similar to this one, a very large study from
Britain published last year, came to the
same conclusion: racquet sports had the
greatest benefit on all-cause mortality, fol-
lowed by swimming and aerobics.
So if you’re not doing it already, take up
tennis! It’s easy to find clinics and teams at
almost any level thanks to the hundreds of
local clubs with play ranging from beginners
to age groups up to 85 and over.
Maybe tennis players do live longer.
Caveats: this was an observation study, based
on surveys of people’s behaviour over a 25 year
time span. The scientists tried to take into
account all the other variables that might affect
life expectancy, but humans are complicated
and surveys are not entirely reliable. We don't
know that tennis, badminton and the other
sports were the cause of longer life - it might
be that people who play sports are generally
healthier, and that both leads to longer life and
allows them to play more sports.
Players 80-88 years of age 19

bership of 324 which means nearly
a third of our members are over
the age of 70 years. This fine

total 544 years between them.

In a busy weekend for Junior tennis all courts at Ulladul-
la were buzzing on Sunday April 7th for the first of 2
Junior Development Series matches to be held in Ul-
ladulla for the South East region which extends from
Wollongong to Merimbula and west to Goulburn and
the Blue Mountains.
This is a singles only event for boys and girls aged 8 – 18
in a round robin format and was well attended by al-
most 80 players and their families.
Several junior Ulladulla club members participated with
very pleasing results. Thomas Hatcher–Nee won the 12
year boys event and his brother William was a semi-
finalist; Keitara Matthews was a semi-finalist in the 12
years girls singles; Isaiah Lewis reached the semi-finals in
the 18 years boys event and Brock Pearse had an un-
lucky loss in the quarter finals after winning all of his
sets in the lead up.
Other local players who gained valuable experience and
showed strong skills and sportsmanship were Tyrone
Matthews, Tiahna Pinches, Andrew Gunn, Rylan O’Sulli-
van, Kolt Pinches and Sean Donald.
The tournament was very efficiently organised and run
by Kevin Murphy with help from several committee
members and others who provided cakes and slices for
sale in the canteen. Thanks to all involved.
