Broughton Park haven’t enjoyed the best of starts to the season which included an M6 journey to Carlisle last week but with both Wilmslow and Broughton Park finishing 5 th and 6 th respectively in the league last season there is a long way to go. Dave Poppitt, Broughton Park’s chairman recently had the honour of an invitation to the Official Rugby World Cup Welcoming Ceremony, in Cardiff, to meet the Uruguayan team who will be visiting Hough End prior to their match against England at the Etihad stadium on the 9 th October. I’m sure the club will make them very welcome even if we hope they are not too much of an obstacle for England. Dave, of course, is a Welshman and I don’t suppose he’ll mind one little bit if Park’s hospitality inspire the Uruguyans to upset the wearers of the Red Rose. This time last week the debate was whether the starting line-up selected for England’s WRC opening game was right, well, despite a few wobbles – let’s call them first night nerves, England came through with a stuttering display against a strong and physical Fijian side. The small matter of Wales this evening is next on the agenda, followed by the interesting prospect of South Africa against Samoa! At the time of writing, last weekends’ heroes, Japan; have just succumbed to Scotland, 10-45 which, after an excellent first half, clearly demonstrates that a four day turn round between matches is asking a lot at this level. They will need to be fully recovered, and some, for Samoa in ten days’ time! There has always been the debate and discussion about differences between football and rugby, one of which is the discipline and respect that the players have for the officials. This was made a little more public by Nigel Owens, last week, when he admits he would relish the chance to officiate at the top level of football. Speaking about the 11-man game, Owens said: "I'd love to give refereeing football a go. I'm afraid they'd be down to five-a-side before half-time. There’s too much unacceptable behaviour. If you had coaches in rugby having a go at referees like Jose Mourinho and some others do, they'd be dealt with more firmly." This was never more clearly demonstrated last Sunday when Richie McCaw had a ‘brain explosion’, quoting coach Steve Hansen, when he blatantly tripped Argentinian, Juan Martin Fernandez Lobbe, despite endless camera angles, there was no doubt of guilt and McCaw accepted his punishment and walked off the pitch without a word. Would that have happened elsewhere…? On the home front, the Vikings (2nds) match won with their third win of the season against Altrincham Kersal last weekend, this finds them sitting at the top of the league, just above Crewe & Nantwich. Today’s opponents are Broughton Park 2’s neither side having played each other for several seasons, on a completely biased note; please can we have the double today? The hawks resounding win, at home, against Lymm last week went someway to appeasing the defeat at Manchester the week before. Today Chris Mc and the team head across the M56 to ‘The Wids’, big winners against Glossop last week. Trusting, and hoping, the boys travel well and bring back the bacon! Whichever nationality, or club, you play for, or support, here’s to a good afternoon and World Cup.

PADDY MULCHRONE REMEMBERS FERGUS AND CHARLIE AT WILMSLOW As the Wolves were preparing to take on Broughton Park today, two former Pownall Park players were bracing themselves for games against Harlequins and Wasps respectively. Fergus and Charlie Mulchrone first pulled on their rugby boots at Kings Road as they made their way through the junior section while I enjoyed the autumn of my playing days in the veterans. Ferg’s team, under the tutelage of Grant McKechnie, sadly separated at U16 level and he joined others at Alt-Kersal, then Sale FC, before heading for Man Met Uni, a season at Sale Sharks and then Macclesfield.

Charlie stayed the course as one of Mike Barltrop’s super-successful junior sides and paid his dues with two seasons in the 1st XV (admitting he owes everything to the inimitable Dan Hargreaves) before also heading for Macc. In between times both picked up county and International honours, with Charlie playing for Ireland U18s in the European championships and both played for England Counties. They have dual nationality though my birth in Belfast, It was at Macc both were picked up by championship side Rotherham. Ferg, playing centre and full back, stayed a season before joining London Irish and scrum half Charlie played two seasons at Clifton Lane before Dean Ryan lured him to Worcester last year for their Premiership promotion season. As if having two sons in the Premiership was not exciting enough, things took a dramatic turn over the summer when

Worcester were invited to join the London double header programme at Twickenham on November 28th instead of Coventry-based Wasps. That will see Charlie’s newly-promoted Worcester take on champions Saracens and Ferg’s London Irish tackle old rivals Harelquins. If both stay fit and healthy, there’s a racing chance both will run out in front of a full house at Twickenham. What’s not to like? Both have endured a prolonged pre-season summer with the Premiership start delayed by world cup proceedings. And both have benefitted enormously after finishing last season with injuries. Charlie, 26, broke his foot in the first championship play-off semi against London Scottish and

Fergus, 28, is recovering from a calf injury. Irish enjoyed a week in Cork before playing Munster in August while Worcester headed for Tignes in the French Alps for altitude training. Things got serious this week when Irish played Quins in the first of two pre-season friendlies last night (Fri) and Worcester take on Wasps today before a final friendly against Sarries next week. The Premiership kicks off on Friday Oct 16th when Worcester host Saints and on Sunday Oct 18th Irish play Leicester Tigers. Said Charlie: “I will never forget my time at Wilmslow from day one. Mike Barltrop was and is a very special and inspirational man. He has Wilmslow and rugby in his blood. While I was there we coined the phrase ‘Wilmslow Wolves in my heart’ along with Ben Day and others. There are players all over the world for whom WWIMH means everything and I am proud to be one of them. “I’m looking forward to a good time in the Premiership and hopefully coming up against Ferg at some

stage. That’ll be interesting. In the meantime, all the best to the lads for another good season. WWIMH.” Fergus only returned to full fitness recently and wasn’t sure about his involvement in last night’s friendly v Quins. “It’s a long way from Pownall Park to the Quins’ Stoop Memorial Ground, but I’ve enjoyed every step of the way. Starting at Wilmslow laid the foundations of my rugby career and I will be forever grateful to Grant, Andy Meachin and others for their time and commitment.

They taught me the basics. Kicking balls in the mud after a 1st XV game with Charlie, Ben Day, James and Dan Partington and others was just as enjoyable whilst our parents ‘refreshed themselves’ in the clubhouse. I wish Wilmslow all the very best for a good season and hope I get the chance to hop in for a pint at some stage.” Ferg may have been dreaming, but he added: “I just hope everyone is still there when Charlie and I return to play -

maybe with Ben Day on my outside and Puds and Unit as team managers. Special mention to the old guard Barry Fisher, Rick Green and others who have been there from the start for us.” They sound very professional to me, but can I remind them that at a pristine Pownall Park on a glorious late summer afternoon last week, watching Wilmslow beat the bejaysus out of old foes Alty-Kersal gave me an inner satisfaction I will never, ever replace. Not at The Madjeski, not at Sixways, not at Twickenham. Nowhere else.

Many people wonder what we do at Waters and the answer is many things, but one of the most critical things we do is ensuring food safety for all.

At Waters we provide comprehensive analytical solutions for food safety, food quality control and food research applications, put simply, our instruments help Scientists to discover and determine whether or not your food is safe!

The role of food testing laboratories has never been more critical. There’s a global need for the safest foods possible and a demand for better quality food products which increases daily. This has led to more rigorous regulations for the testing of contaminants in exported, imported, and domestic food and beverage products, from baby food to the meat you buy and the water you drink.

Consumers are demanding more from the foods they eat than just mere sustenance. In keeping up with busy lifestyles, there is increasing demand for foods that are not only convenient, with extended shelf-life, but also nutritious. Additionally, food manufacturers are attempting to differentiate their brands and products on the basis of flavour and health-giving properties.

Waters Corporation have helped discover pesticides and contaminants in foods which otherwise would have been harmful and poisonous for human consumption.

Likewise, toxins that naturally occur in food can have short- term and long-term adverse effects on human and animal health. They are therefore an area of focus for monitoring and regulation within the food chain. Waters offers a portfolio of highly innovative technologies for the detection and quantification of mycotoxins and marine biotoxins.

Good diet and nutrition can enhance sporting performance so ensuring these foods are not only great quality but safe is integral for athletes including Rugby players, not only to prevent illness such as food poisoning but just as a car runs best with a full tank of gas, your body needs the right kind of fuel from food.

So the next time you grab something to eat, just remember that Waters could have played a key role ensuring it is safe for you.

BROUGHTON PARK Last season, results against today’s visitors went Wilmslow’s way. At The Hough in October, the Wolves had produced their best early season form to run in five tries from Gareth Tait, Harry Patch, Max Harvey (2) and Bob MacCallum. Blake Mahovic was a constant threat for Park but it was only right at the end that Ada Titaloye got them a consolation score as Wilmslow won 29-13. Back here in January, the Wolves had got into a winning streak and handed out an eight try mauling as Park were seen off by 50-21. It was a day when they hardly put a

foot wrong with the two Ollies, Wilkinson and McCall at their best, Max Harvey and Lawrence James always a threat and with a debut for Legin Hotham. Even so, Park were still in the hunt at 36-21 as the game went into its last quarter with their forwards having the edge in the close quarter arm wrestling stuff but every time the Wolves backs got the ball danger threatened and two late scores from Alex Taylor and Max Harvey put a rare complexion on the scoreboard. Park must have wondered though how on earth, they had let Wilmslow in to administer such a hiding. They’d enjoyed nearly all the early possession and had still found themselves 21 points in arrears to the Wolves opportunistic play and despite three tries from their forwards, they still leaked a further five tries. Never before had Park conceded eight tries in a league match. It was more than enough to make any self respecting Park man cough up his post match ham sandwich and sausage roll and not many stayed long enough afterwards to do so. The season before Park had beaten Wilmslow convincingly at The Hough (29-3) before being held to a 12 all draw here at the Memorial Ground. We didn’t meet in 2012/13 as Park were battling it out in SLC1 before bouncing back up again. It was Wilmslow, of course, who had consigned them to a season at this level in the last game of 2011/12. Park had suffered a wretched run of twelve consecutive defeats before winning three games to give themselves a final chance of survival in the league. It was a season when you needed at least 50 points to stay up. It had been awfully crowded at the foot of the table and Wilmslow had only secured their place in it the week before. Park had to win their last game but the Wolves showed neither sympathy nor fraternity as they won 27-16 on the day. It was Giles Heagerty’s last match in charge of the Wolves

before moving to Macc and the team rewarded him with fifty minutes of the best rugby they had played all season. So there we are. Plenty of history between us, two wins out of three to the Wolves this season, Park still to get off the mark but it’s early days still and you can’t count your chickens in matches like this. There’s always more than just a handful of league points at stake.

Coach Rick Jones bore a look of satisfaction afterwards. He felt his side had dominated for long periods and had defended well when they had to and there had been a promising debut by former Wilmslow High School back row Ben Stern coming on as a second half sub from the bench. All three senior sides won and there is a feeling that, even missing the likes of MacCallum, Black and James, all sidelined, and McCall and Clifford both unavailable, there is just a bit of strength in depth, which hasn’t always been the case, and that other players have shown they can step up to the plate. The Wolves are at home on Saturday when Broughton Park are the visitors.

Leigh 22-26 Warrington Not many of us would have predicted that Warrington would have been top of the league unbeaten after three games. They had to dig deep though to earn a 22-26 win at Leigh. Down 17-6 at half time and reduced by injury to fourteen players for the last ten minutes, they still managed to come out on top. Darren Norman kicked two first half penalties to keep them in touch and then a purple patch saw two further second half penalties augmented by tries from fly half Tom Wood and speedster Nathan Beesley. . Leigh scored three first half tries and in the final ten minutes with the game in uncontested scrummage mode put Warrington under intense pressure but the defence held and they could only manage the single unconverted try. Nevertheless, make what you will of a Leigh side which scores four tries at home and still ends up on the losing end. They’ve had a tough start to the season losing at home by 18-20 against Kendal to a drop goal in the last play of the game and then 22-19 away at Kirkby Lonsdale, despite coming back from a 22-0 half time deficit with three second half tries. Both Kendal and Kirkby Lonsdale will be expected to be promotion contenders come April. Leigh, said Warrington coach, Andy Roberts are a much better side than their record indicates so don’t be surprised if they soon start winning again, probably at Eccles today. Rochdale 15-25 Kendal It was a more settled team that Kendal took to Rochdale and they slowly got on top to take the points after scoring three times in the last quarter. The first half had seen Rochdale’s huge pack dominate scrum and lineout but as they tired, chasing Glenn Weightman’s cross kicks, Kendal had the better of the second half.

The first try came to Kendal after five minutes with Chris park finishing off a crisp handling move. A mucked up restart then handed the initiative to the home side’s forwards who put the ball through several phases before Tom Callaghan broke away to level the scores. Kendal then had to defend grimly, conceding four penalties to keep Rochdale at bay for a 7-7 at half time score. Penalties were exchanged, both sides had chances until on 65 minutes Weightman found a gap to race through and score. A further Kendal try followed immediately (their correspondent didn’t know who the scorer was), Rochdale hit back through Burleigh but it was Dini Noyo, Kendal’s winger, who latched on to a short kick ahead by Weightman for the decisive score as time was running out. All the Kendal scores, said their correspondent, had a touch

of fortune and opportunism about them but the team is developing nicely and did enough to deserve this success. The arrival of Richard Harriman in the second half had bolstered the Kendal scrum, changing the course of the match. Rochdale’s correspondent was sanguine about the outcome but took heart from a gutsy performance in a tough match.

Vale of Lune 13 – 19 Kirkby Lonsdale With scant possession, under pressure in the set scrum and on the wrong end of a horrendous penalty count it’s hard to win, but that is what Kirkby achieved away to

the Vale of Lune with three tries to one and that must be a testament to the resilience, commitment, tenacity and never say die attitude of the Kirkby squad as it settles in to it’s new season. Vale were soon 3-0 to the good when Kirkby Lonsdale were caught offside in front of their posts but against the run of play KL’s stand in No. 10, Tom Slater, took a pass on the Vale 22 and baffled everyone with a show and go to run in for a try. Back

came Vale but all they had to show for their efforts was a penalty on the stroke of half time. In the second half they were awarded a penalty try from a deliberate KL knock on but then they fell to a moment of brilliance from KL’s left winger Martyn Knapton, who stepped away from a would be tackler in his own half, ran down the wing, chipped the last man and regathered for a score that Kirkby’s reporter described as a champagne moment worthy of the entrance money on its own. Knapton was again involved when he was up to take a high kick from Slater and offloading to right winger Harry Ralston, who against his father’s old club, dived over in the corner for the winning try which was handsomely converted by Tom Picthall. Vale finished off hammering at the KL line but that was it. Vale’s Stuart Vernon has lost none of his talent for drama during the close season. ‘Bring me my armour piercing arrows of desire’, he writes, no doubt inspired by Twickenham roused patriotism, to describe the lack of penetration and invention shown by Vale, who

just couldn’t break down the KL defence. It was a pity, he said, because the Vale forwards had really done quite well without any reward. One win against Penrith and two losses to Kirkby Lonsdale and Kendal suggest that it’s been a tough start for them and away to Warrington next week could also be difficult. After that expect Vale to hold their own against most of the other sides in this league.

Saturday 19th. September 2015 North 1 West Wilmslow 31 – 12 Altrincham Kersal Pace Tells The Wolves duly avenged their Cheshire Vase defeat at Altrincham Kersal three weeks ago by scoring four tries to two, which was probably a fair reflection of the afternoon’s play. They enjoyed several periods of domination and in full back Ed Stobart and centre Legin Hotham, they had the two most dangerous players off whom the rest of the side could play. The Wolves knew they had the pace and invention to cause their opponents problems, providing they could avoid a head to head arm wrestling exercise with AK’s dogged and chunky pack. May be with a bit more composure they should have finished off more than just four of the opportunities that came their way but that would have meant taking the ball into contact more often, something they didn’t want to do, and eschewing some of their over ambitious off loads in closed spaces.

Altrincham Kersal had arrived at The Memorial Ground on the back of three consecutive home wins to start their season against Wilmslow, Eccles and Broughton Park. Nobody was holding too much store in the Bank Holiday result against Wilmslow as both sides were missing players and neither would have been totally match fit. What we did learn on that occasion was that they possessed a rugged pack that was capable of causing problems if they got into the box seat but that otherwise they lacked a bit of pace and incision to easily break down a resolute defence. The match got underway in glorious late summer sunshine and, according to the Liverpool referee, Mr. David Bundy, was played at a scorching pace. ‘A bit too fast for my liking’, the heavily perspiring official said afterwards but to his credit he avoided the temptation to slow the game down a bit by over judicious use of his whistle. The Wolves were quickly into their stride, forcing AK to defend two catch and drive efforts in the first two minutes. After five minutes, Wolves lock Adam Hewitt got a hand on an AK lineout throw in midfield and after two or three midfield thrusts, No. 8 Alex Taylor broke the AK defensive line. Taylor doesn’t look particularly quick but that’s deceptive and he held off everyone for a forty yard run to score under the posts. This was followed by quick ball from half backs Andy Walker and Ollie Wilkinson and some good support running off the ball in which Vili Tuipulotu, Stobart and Hotham were all prominent. Hotham touched down in the corner and Conor McMurdock, with the injured Bob MacCallum watching from the touch line, landed an imperious conversion, of which the little master himself would have been proud. Only ten minutes had been played but the Wolves then mucked up the restart, so important in today’s game. AK were allowed into the game and helped by referee Bundy’s whistle were able to impose themselves on the Wolves defence for several minutes. The Wolves defended three catch and drive attempts, lost Hewitt to a Yellow Card, and then the remaining seven forwards twice drove the AK scrum backwards from five yards out. Prop Adam Taher can be a serious scrummager at times but he injured his back during this period and was replaced by the young James Venables, who maybe doesn’t yet quite have the presence of Taher in the set piece but otherwise, together with Robert Taylor on the tight head and hooker McMurdock, acquitted himself well during the rest of the afternoon. A fast improving but still very young front row! Just when it looked that the danger had been cleared, AK took a drop out and found space on their left which ended with lock Sean Clayton taking a pass with a clear run in for their opening try. It was their only clean break of the game. The Wolves rhythm had been disrupted by the flow of penalties against them but a midfield scrum on thirty five minutes enabled them to get their backs running again and to release Stobart at pace. He still had a lot to do but eventually crossed for the third try without hand being laid upon him. A fourth try might have followed immediately when Ollie Wilkinson broke through, only to be called back for a harsh looking obstruction offence. This led to AK’s second try. Their penalty kick to touch was clearly fielded by Sam Cutts about a foot or so from the touchline. The touch judge’s flag stayed down but he was over ruled by referee Bundy, some forty yards behind. By the time, he realised his mistake an AK lineout had already been awarded and they then set about a catch and drive which ended with Ben Davies touching down. Instead of it being 28 – 7 at halftime, it was 21 – 12, a totally different proposition. Mr. Bundy then started to find fault with AK’s play at the breakdown but the Wolves were unable to take advantage of a series of transgressions until McMurdock landed yet another penalty from close to forty yards out. There was still nearly half an hour on the clock and most of the game was conducted in AK territory. The visitors enjoyed their share of the ball but didn’t have what it needed to break the Wolves defensive line. The Wilmslow forwards for their part were probably guilty of not really contesting the breakdown, as they had done the week before, and of delivering a series of offloads, which didn’t find their mark. The best chances still went their way, in fact it was hard to think of more than one chance created by AK during this period, and then Stobart and Hotham again were off from a midfield scrum and eventually right winger Harry Patch came off his wing to bury the AK defence as he stormed over for the defining score. There were only a matter of minutes left but everyone knew that what had been an entertaining game was now decided and the Wolves played down the clock without alarm.

Widnes 17-30 Penrith

It was meant to be a celebration at Widnes. After a win at Broughton Park and

loss at Carlisle, they were now at home in front of their newly refurbished

clubhouse for this game against Penrith, who finished fourth last season and

will be amongst this season’s favourites.

Penrith took charge early on with an early Fearon penalty and extended their

lead shortly after when Tama Toomata and scrum half Paul Newton tidied up scrum ball before releasing full back Jamie McNaughton at pace and he in turn

put in young winger Richard Addison. Widnes had a chance to hit back but

squandered the final pass and then found themselves defending a Widnes

scrum again. Toomata and Morgan both departed with blood injuries but, no

matter, stand in No. 8 Mike Stephens picked at the base and drove over.

The old hands at Widnes, Dave Welsh, Paul O’Connor and Kevin Leadbetter

then combined for a 75 yard dash to the line. Before half time, Fearon added a

penalty for Penrith to make it 5-20 at the interval.

Toomata was back on for the second half, took the restart and got into the

Widnes twenty two before prodding theball into touch. The Widnes throw was

crooked, their scrum was then penalised and Fearon took another three points.

For the next half hour, it was strangely quiet with neither side doing much until

Penrith’s Newton took a quick penalty and nipped in before the Wids were

ready. The last ten minutes were theirs though as two scores came from Tom

Tindall and Gaz Whitfield but it was too late by then. Penrith had long since been home and dry.

Carlisle 22-5 Broughton Park The sun was out at Warwick Rd., reports Bill Glendinning, a phenomenon which I personally have never experienced.

Broughton Park had travelled with an under strength team but that didn’t appear to affect them as they took on the home side with some lively play up front. The old heads in the Carlisle side knew exactly how to handle this though as Jason Israel soon slotted his first penalty of the afternoon for a breakdown offence. A turnover then enabled centre Dan Holmes to put in a kick for winger Robbie James to collect and to score his first ever senior try. Despite all their pressure, Park trailed 10-0 at the interval but they endeavoured to score out wide early in the second half. That was it for them as they began to tire. The Carlisle pack got on top,

No. 8 James Addyman got their second from a series of rolling mauls and a third try came when Israel released earl for a mazy run which ended with a try for Dan Holmes. Comfortable for Carlisle in the end. No report posted on Broughton Park’s web site for their perspective of the game. Blackburn 16 - 11 Eccles 6-6 at half time two penalties apiece, three unconver tries in the second half, two to Blackburn, one to Eccles and Blackburn’s first win of the season.. Eccles had sufficient of the play to have won this one but by the end Blackburn had taken their chances and defended well enough to keep their visitors out. No report for the Altrincham Kersal perspective of last week’s match here.

Page 10: Club President N1W Standish Media Services 1 NIGEL DAY …files.pitchero.com/clubs/4943/wrufcmagazinebroughtonpark... · 2015. 10. 26. · Dave, Uruguyans to upset the wearers of

A few words from Geoff Mitchell, aged 90, who will be here this season for his 75th year of playing and watching Wilmslow. Geoff played for Yorkshire 1951-56 and also North East Counties. He also was the fixture secretary and wrote the programme notes for many years.

On the first Monday of September 1950, I arrived at 56 Oxford Street, Manchester to start my first job for Tootal Broadhurst Lee and was met on the doorstep by one Vaudrey Middleton, a manager of the Company and a stalwart of Wilmslow Rugby Club. Days later, at his invitation, I arrived at Pownall Park and met, among others, Peter Poizer and John Holloway. At this time, Wilmslow were a comparatively junior club but blessed with a large number of young and promising players, led by Ian Smith, a wartime hero, (his obituary covered half-a-page in the Telegraph a year or two ago). The combination of youth and inspirational leadership resulted in a season which contained only one defeat and with successful seasons to follow, the club came to the forefront of Cheshire rugby. In those days, before the introduction of the leagues, a club’s status depended on the quality of its fixture list and Wilmslow’s success on the field and popularity with opponents (helped in no small measure by having a mixed bar instead of the men only bars in most, if not all of the other clubs), led to a rapid improvement of fixtures. So much so, that by the early 60’s, Wilmslow played virtually every northern club and clubs from the Midlands, such as Birmingham and Nuneaton. Player recruitment came from our advanced status as one of the four clubs dominating County selection; the other three being Sale, Birkenhead Park and New Brighton and the efforts of, initially, Blair Gething and then Peter Turner, who wrote to schools inviting boys to take part in trial games during the Christmas and Easter holidays. There was no local High School or Mini rugby so the teams consisted of players from a wide range of schools. The side of 1958-59 may have been an extreme example, but of the seventeen players in that season’s photograph, only four players were from local schools, the rest were from Public schools – and six of these were Oxbridge graduates. Decline followed the golden years of the early 70’s, which meant that when the leagues were formed in 1987, we were placed higher than we should have been before finally arriving at a level where we don’t have to over reach ourselves. A number of clubs did just that with damaging and in some cases fatalresults. I still find the club a delight to visit. The rugby is good, particularly in the second half of last season and it gives the impression of being a sensibly well-run operation. It is a credit to all concerned and long may it remain so.

Sunday 20th. September Fleetwood 24 - 14 Wilmslow

Once again, Wilmslow had to field an entire junior colts side as those senior colts still available stayed away. To add to their difficulties, they had to start with just fourteen players but fortunately for them the referee took offence at a Fleetwood player’s fisticuffs and subsequent verbals early on and red carded him so the game went on as a fourteen a-side match. Fleetwood scored twice to go 12-0 ahead before determined play from centre George Wells got Wilmslow on the scoreboard. A third try for Fleetwood followed and then it was the turn of centre Brogan to swerve and run in Wilmslow’s second score, converted by Tom Higginson for Wilmslow. At this stage it was 19-14 but Fleetwood got a fourth to finish the scoring. No lack of commitment and effort reports Fiona King. Sunday 13th. September Wilmslow 17– 26 Liverpool St. Helens It’s not where you start, it’s where you finish that matters, writes Mark Shotton. LSH were first to score thanks to the skills of their No. 10 reinforced by their pack. Wilmslow soon got back into the game. Quick ruck ball from their loose forwards set up a chance for the back line to run left and then right for winger Guy Pritchard to score. For 15 minutes both sides wrestled with each other but it

was clear that the LSH pack were gaining the upper hand in the tight. Late in the first half LSH started making their dominance count, and bundled over for two very well taken scores. The half time ‘agreement’ (almost a pact between player and coach) was that if Wilmslow could stem the tide, deny the capable half backs free ball, try hard to not miss tackles and establish a structure in defence, then the team had the fire power to strike back. What was to come was far beyond any coaches’ thoughts. Wilmslow started well enough after the break and Alex Williams and Brendan Beehan drove into the heart of their opposite forwards. Parity in the loose was being restored, although LSH retained the upper hand in the scrum, and the lineout. A change of position for Hector Tomlinson saw his starting the second stanza at scrum half. This talented rugby player is perhaps better placed to use his not inconsiderable skills at fly half, as his quickness of foot and of mind gives him arguably time at 10 to out-wit opponents. His first half partner Will Allen who had a fine all round game moved to hooker and continued his impressive start to season. It was not long before Wilmslow glimpsed the opportunity of a come back, and started playing with heart and desire. There comes a time in any game where heart rules head and so it should, if nothing to save us from predictable rugby-by-numbers monotony. Wilmslow scored two trys through Harri Dickinson and Tom Higginson but with an all-round game starting to emerge, Wilmslow looked like they could sneak an unlikely win. They believed they could, but in the final analysis the three leaked trys in the first half proved too much of a mountain to climb. That said the defence at the end of the game was nothing short of heroic. Rugby games can turn on such moments of defence, and the change of score is almost as swift as it is in tennis. 14-point switches can occur in seconds and in so doing they change mind-sets and attitudes. For a couple of gnarled old badgers whose knees forbid playing this fine game these days, this was poetry in motion.

Wilmslow were unlucky not to score from another bullocking run from Marcus Atkinson who made a huge difference at number 8 in the second half. So too did pack leader Nathan Forrester who led his troops with aplomb.

What to say, where and to whom is always tricky in the heat of battle. He handled himself very well, and said the right things at the right tomes to his forward-looking forward pack. With the game poised at 17-26, it could have gone either way but a fine break from the LSH scrum half gained his side sixty yards as they then bottled the Wilmslow boys in their own half for the time remaining. Full match reports are posted on the club web site.
