President’s Message Our club has a rule that while we welcome guests at our meetings, outings and activities, we ask that no individual come as a guest more than twice in a year. This rule has been in place, written down, for many years as part of our membership policy. Several years ago, at a time when we were being advised by Probus Canada to review and increase our insurance coverage, concern about coverage for guests was one factor that led the Management Committee to ensure that this rule was being applied. Let’s just say that enforcing this rule rigorously led to discontent among some members. This year, reviewing insurance requirements once more, the Management Committee has satisfied itself that neither our insurance policies, nor requirements from Probus Canada require a limit on guests. Therefore, we have decided to suspend this rule. During the coming year, we will review whether suspending it is having any deleterious effects on our club. Our claim to be welcoming might be enhanced if we no longer keep track of how often a particular guest appears at one of our events. Last month 63 members and 2 guests attended the meeting. Paid club membership is 123.

Profiles and Passions – Sigrid & John Purdon The House on the Hill – When Sigrid and John joined their families, they needed a larger home. They

decided to build a log home. They researched log building and contracted a log shell. Sigrid designed the layout and her son drafted the plan. After looking for property near Highway 11, they selected a lot on Stoneleigh Road, across from Halfway Lane. With the help of friends and family, they cleared a driveway and the lot. Local contractors were hired for the excavation, footings, and foundation. Sigrd and John were

very involved every day, even during the week - changing into their work clothes at school and working on the building until dark.

The driveway was too much of a challenge for the two tractor-trailers loaded with their numbered logs, so a bulldozer had to pull them backwards up the hill. The logs were put into place with a mobile crane, all in one day. Sigrid cut all the rafters with volunteer help, and then the steel roof panels were installed. The most difficult and time-consuming task was completing the chinking between the logs, both inside and outside. They are proud of

their completed, furnished, house on the hill. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- CANCER INSIGHTS – 2017 Gunars Balodis, B. Eng., M. Sc., P. Eng. Gunars used the book “Cancer as a Metabolic Disease” by Dr. Thomas Seyfried (cancer researcher at Yale University & Boston College for 30 years) as his primary scientific source. The book details over 1,000 scientific and clinical studies that provide the following two major scientific insights: 1. The root cause of cancer is failed cell respiration. (first detailed by the Nobel

prize winner Dr. Otto Warburg in 1931 and confirmed by many other modern researchers), and

2. If a cancer cell nucleus is inserted into a healthy cell (i.e. a cell with good respiration) the surprising result is that the cancerous nucleus reverts to normal behavior. (Dr. McKinnell, 1969 and others in 2003, 2005 and 2012)

He made a case that given these two scientific insights, restoring good cell respiration is a logical approach to preventing and, in some cases, curing cancer. Gunars described Vitamin D research, Dr. Johanna Budwig’s research and anti-cancer protocols, and Rene Caisse’s Essiac Tea. He explained why these protocols would improve cell respiration, resulting in the prevention of cancer and, in some cases, curing cancer. He then recommended an anti-cancer strategy (as a complimentary approach to chemotherapy, radiation and surgery), and gave a personal testimonial about the effectiveness of the strategy. A strategy for reducing the risk of and, in many cases, curing cancer • Use the Budwig flaxseed oil protocols to produce healthy cell membranes to improve cell respiration. This is probably the most important nutritional step. If you are fighting cancer, use a full recipe every day for at least 8 to 12 weeks, or until you gain a clear biopsy. Then continue with a half recipe

almost every day. If you are preventing cancer, use a half recipe daily. (recipe below). • Vitamin D – take at least 4,000 IU per day to fight chronic inflammation and viral, bacterial and fungal infection inside the cell and throughout the body. Vitamin D also helps to activate apoptosis (the suicide gene) in abnormal cells. Please note, the best approach is to have your blood tested to determine the amount of Vitamin D supplementation your body needs. • Use Essiac Tea to detoxify and reduce continuous low grade inflammation as well as providing essential micronutrients, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that have a demonstrated effect in controlling cancer. • Avoid unhealthy fats such as hydrogenated fats (e.g. shortening and margarine), trans fats and processed vegetable oil (if it has a long shelf life, then it is not a healthy fat). • Use healthy vegetable fats such as olive oil, coconut oil, cold pressed flax seed oil, and MCT oil. Coconut oil is the only one recommended for cooking. • Saturated fats such as butter and lard are preferable to vegetable oils (except coconut oil) for cooking because they do not produce toxic fats when heated. • Avoid smoking or other irritants (such as gluten, for some) that cause continuous low-grade inflammation, which leads to faulty cell respiration and ultimately, cancer. • Not for diabetics – use fasting or a Ketogenic (ultra low carbohydrate) diet to reduce sugar and starch in the blood to try to starve and weaken the cancer cells. A multi-day “water fast” will also help detoxify the body thereby reducing chronic inflammation and encouraging the healing of cell membranes.

Gunars’ Personal Testimonial In 1985 my father died of melanoma cancer at age 66 years. In 1988 my mother died of stomach cancer at age 66 years. Then April 2006 (at age 60 years) I was diagnosed with Barrett’s Oesophagus and the biopsy showed serious cell dysplasia, indicating a high risk of oesophageal cancer within two years. My new doctor (Barbara Powell) determined that I was celiac, which is an inherited condition. This indicates that my mother probably died as a result of undiagnosed celiac disease, which causes a very high rate of oesophageal, stomach and colon cancer due to chronic inflammation in the gastrointestinal system caused by a reaction to gluten. My doctor and I tried various natural supplements, including intravenous Vitamin C, over a period of 12 months, but every six months the biopsies continued to show a growing risk of oesophageal cancer. With my doctor’s agreement, I started using the Budwig CCFO protocol on 1 Sep 2008 and, after only eight weeks, my biopsy on 31 Oct 2008 showed clear! Was it the Budwig CCFO or the placebo effect? Based on the science described in this paper, I am now very convinced that it was the Budwig protocol. A daily serving of the Budwig CCFO can be used as a healthy prevention protocol. My favourite recipe (two servings to eat or share immediately) ICE CREAM BUDWIG! • 12 Tbsp (1 cup) Cottage Cheese + 6 Tbsp Flaxseed Oil mixed very thoroughly • Optional - Add 3 Tbsp ground flax seeds (raw flax seeds ground up in a coffee grinder only when you are making the Budwig, otherwise they will oxidize and lose their nutritional value) • Add 1 banana and 1 cup of frozen strawberries and mix thoroughly My most recent biopsy (2016) still shows clear. In 2009, I advised two friends who both were stage four cancer (and were no longer on chemo) about my experience with the Budwig protocol. In both cases they embraced the concept and had a “spontaneous remission” (according to their oncologists). They are still using the Budwig CCFO almost daily and have remained cancer free eight years later.
