EARTHQUAKE Among all the natural calamities that regularly befall humankind, the earthquake is one of the more frequent, but so far, still the least understood. With all their expertise and advances in Science and Technology, our brilliant Scientists and Geologists are still unable to fully determine or predict when or where the next earthquake will occur.

Even the cause of the earthquake up to now still remains unclear. Many will say that it is caused by a volcanic activity deep in the mantle of the earth. But for several, they still believe in the Tectonic Theory.

Most Scientists believe that all of the Earth's surface, continents and oceans, lie above the next deeper layer of the earth called the Crust. This crust is divided into about twenty tectonic plates covering the earth, much like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, beside but separated from each other moving slowly and sliding past each other. Sometimes they fail to slide past and collide, crushing the huge rocks between them. The rupture of these rocks causes a shift in the plates' movement and result in an earthquake. These earthquakes occur between the plates called fault lines, most of which have been already identified worldwide.

Thousands of earthquakes occur around the globe annually but most of them are so mild that they go unnoticed and are hardly felt except by seismographs. A few violent ones however, do occur yearly in many countries like Japan China and India , causing death and destruction, either directly by the quakes damage or indirectly by the tsunami that sometimes occurs.

Until recently, a few weeks ago, when Davao, and several areas in Davao del sur and North Cotabato, were struck by a 6.5 magnitude earthquake, many people were unaware that there were actually several faultiness crisscrossing our region. We even thought that Davao and the surrounding provinces were earthquake free. The successive quakes that recently hit us and caused so much death and destruction has certainly created a drastic change in this mind-set.

It is quite noteworthy that this calamity that struck our Region has brought us to the realization that we too are vulnerable to the unpredictable tantrums of Mother Nature and must rouse us from our complacency. It has also highlighted our unpreparedness for this kind of disaster and our poor structural regulation and planning.

The good news however is it also brought out the best in many of us. The rapid and spontaneous response of many Davaoenos and Rotarians in mobilizing and providing continuous aid and assistance to our unfortunate brethren in the devastated areas of north Cotabato and Davao del sur is so heart-warming and makes one proud to be a Mindanaon, a Rotarian.

As I write this, another tremor is again shaking the city,, but we can just continue to pray that this phenomenon of destruction does not happen again even as we hold on to our faith in the almighty while remaining vigilant to our commitment of Service Above Self.

After a couple of weeks of vacation and

doing community service, Rotarians again gathered for the weekly luncheon meeting last November 14, 2019 at the Sarung Banggi Hall, Harana Restaurant. The Club did not meet last October 31 since it was a Holiday and on November 7 for the Relief Operations at the Municipalities of Magsaysay and Makilala. As usual, Rotarians meet and greeted each other as they assemble. Dir. Edgar Rico led the opening prayer and the recitation of the Rotary Pillars as Club Secretary and Master of Ceremony PAG Arnold Navales acknowledges the presence of fellow Rotarians and guests. PVP Rene Dalayon greeted the celebrants and led the community singing.

The meeting highlighted the audio-visual presentation of the 81st Foundation Day celebration last October 26, 2019 at the Apo View Hotel and the Relief Operations to the earthquake victims last November 7, 2019 during President Dadz Mahipus’ Time.

Thanks for the Boneless lechon and Ice cream from the celebrants, PP Fil Divino and Edgar Rico.

DIOSDADO ANGELO “DADZ” A. MAHIPUS

Greetings my Fellow Rotarians,

I am grateful to have as our Guest Speaker our new member of the Club, Mr Lester Jones Suarez for his Classification Talk. Let us listen to what he will share to us about the successes and accomplishments he achieved and perhaps the strategies he is doing to reach his accomplishment.

Allow me also to thank those who paid their membership contribution. As per report, 28 members already paid in full and partially the agreed dues for the period. Rest assured that our club’s finances is properly spent and accounted. I am also happy to inform you that our club is already working on the recovery of other bank accounts which we can use for our club programs and activities. I am again encouraging other members to please update their respective member’s dues.

As the yuletide season is fast approaching, our RCD board will be meeting to plan our activities for the said occasion. With this, I am seeking your suggestions as to how we will be celebrating our Christmas event. Thank you and Mabuhay ang Rotary Club of Davao!!!

Lets be rotary-like in our dealings with the

Club using the 4-WAY TEST...”

World Polio Day cheers major achievements toward global polio

eradication By Ryan Hyland

Rotary and its partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) are celebrating a major milestone this World Polio Day: confirmation that a second type of the wild poliovirus has been eradicated, which is a significant step toward the ultimate goal of a polio-free world.

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO), announced the historic feat in a video address during Rotary’s Global Online Update on 24 October. He said an independent commission of health experts certified the global eradication of the type 3 strain, which hasn't been detected anywhere in the world since Nigeria identified a case of polio that it caused in November 2012. The type 2 strain was certified as eradicated in 2015.

“That leaves just wild poliovirus type 1,” Tedros said. He also commended Rotary’s long fight against polio. “Everything you [Rotary] have done has brought us to the brink of a polio-free world.”

Tedros balanced the good news with a note of caution, saying that the biggest enemy of global eradication is complacency. He encouraged Rotary members to redouble their efforts.

November 2019

Rotary Day at the United Nations, which we celebrate each November, is an important reminder of the historic relationship between our organizations. But this year’s event is even more important than usual, because we are building up to the 75th anniversary of the signing of the UN Charter in June 2020. You might ask, why celebrate this anniversary? For Rotary, it is entirely appropriate, because we played such a critical leadership role in the San Francisco Conference that formed the United Nations in 1945. Throughout World War II, Rotary published materials about the importance of forming such an organization to preserve world peace. Not only did Rotary help influence the formation of the UN, but this magazine also played a leading part in communicating its ideals. Rotary educated members about plans to create the UN through numerous articles in The Rotarian and through a booklet titled From Here On! When the time came to write the UN charter, Rotary was one of 42 organizations the United States invited to serve as consultants to its delegation at the San Francisco Conference. Each organization had seats for three representatives, so Rotary International’s 11 representatives served in rotation. The people officially representing Rotary included the general secretary, the current and several past presidents, and the editor of The Rotarian.

In addition, Rotarians from Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, and North and South America served as members of or consultants to their own nations’ delegations. We have a deep and lasting relationship with the UN that deserves to be celebrated and appreciated. To recognize this relationship, Rotary will host five special events between now and June: Rotary Day at the UN in New York on the 9th of this month; three presidential conferences next year in Santiago, Chile, in Paris, and in Rome; and a final celebration just before the Rotary International Convention in Honolulu. The focus on the UN in the year ahead is not only about the past; it also lights a path to our future. There are so many parallels between the work we do through our areas of focus and the work of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. While those goals are indeed incredibly ambitious, they provide inspiration and direction — and are similar to many Rotary goals, which have proven to create lasting, positive change in our world. The goals can be achieved, but only if undertaken with the same long-term commitment and tenacity that Rotary understands so well. Alone, we cannot provide clean water for all, we cannot eliminate hunger, we cannot eradicate polio. But together with partners like the United Nations, of course we can. Please consider attending one of our five UN celebrations. I look forward to sharing news of these special events with you throughout the year.
