March program: Amie Newsome on Presenting Bees to the Public

February meeting summary

As beekeepers, we are often asked questions about bees by people we meet. While interest in bees remains high, ignorance and fear persist in the minds of the public. Ms. Newsome’s talk will address how to interact with the public when talking about bees so that we can more effectively educate and communicate with our communities about how valuable and threatened our honeybees are.A graduate of NC State University, Ms. Newsome holds a degree in horticulture and

works for the Johnston County Cooperative Extension as an extension agent for agriculture and commercial horticulture. In addition to promoting Johnston County nursery products, she teaches classes including the Beginning Beekeepers Short Course. Please welcome Amie as she brings her knowledge, enthusiasm and experience to Wake County. Please note that the March meeting will be held at the Raleigh Police Club, 3500 Leonard Road, Knightdale, NC 27545.

Vice president Ricky Barbour opened the meeting at 6:30 p.m., noting that president Sarah Myers had been in a car wreck but was uninjured, and asked the club to keep her in mind. Despite the weather, turnout for Dr. Connor was good and included many visitors from neighboring counties. After making announcements, Ricky turned the meeting over to program chair Kim Underhill, who introduced Dr. Connor. Books from Wicwas Press, Dr. Connor’s publishing company, were available for purchase.

Dr. Connor ‘s lecture centered on a slide review, examining each side of each frame in a 10-frame deep hive body, peppered with many facts and observations. Key points included keeping protein (pollen) near brood, where it is most needed. He noted that a healthy colony will usually keep pollen stored facing & around the brood chamber. Much of his emphasis was on monitoring food availability and quality. He encouraged active management, including feeding, monitoring health, using good queens, and treating for pests and diseases when needed.

The Q & A session covered a range of topics, including feeding, pests, fungicides, and others. He finds oil traps most effective for SHB. He emphasized that every bee club needs to have a plan for producing local queens, noting that swarm season is the best time for queen rearing.

The meeting closed with a raffle that included three books (Bee Essentials, Swarm Essentials, Bee Biology) from Wicwas Press plus a new design of hive tool donated by Bailey Bee Supply. The meeting adjourned by 9 p.m.

Beekeeping in BrazilFrom our perspective, a bee suit for a donkey may seem either cute or crazy, but for Brazilian beekeeper Manuel Juraci, it’s essential to his livelihood as a beekeeper. Economic opportunity is limited in the arid, impoverished area of northeastern Brazil where he lives, and having a donkey outfitted to assist him in managing his bees increases his productivity. With bee yard locations inacessible by road, his donkey helps him transport equipment, supplies and harvested honey more efficiently. Due to the aggressive nature of the Africanized bees present in Brazil, protection for himself and his donkey is a must - thus the homemade, one-of-a-kind bee suit, tailored for his donkey Boneco. It’s effective enough that he may soon have a sideline business making donkey bee suits for other beekeepers! Thanks to club member Dianne Saunders for sharing this article!
