Report of September 9th Water OutingThe club water outing to Heyburn Park Recreation Area at Heyburn Lake on September 9th

was a good one to finish out the season. The temperature topped out at only 90° and with agentle breeze off of the lake, it was quite pleasant. And the lake water was cool enough sothat you could chill out. The Tulsa Triathlon was held at Heyburn Park on Sunday Morningalso, we had to wait for them to clear out before we could set up in the pavillion. Andcongratulations to all those ITTHC members who ran the Triathlon to work up a good appetitefor lunch.

There were 33 members standing in line to chow down on club supplied hamburgers, hotdogs, hot links, and food brought by club members. A big thanks Roger Eaton with a littlehelp from Wally Dick for grilling the hamburgers, hot dogs, & hot links to perfection. Thanks again to John & Jody Hamilton for storing and trucking the club gas grill & tables tothe site. Thanks to all those bringing the outstanding side dishes and desserts. There was agood selection of side dishes. If you went away hungry at this outing, again it was your ownfault.

Some of the morning and evening “Maverick” finds were: Wally Dick found a fairly largeman’s 10K Gold Ring with a blue stone, 2 silver rings, 1 junk ring, & a large silver St.Christopher Medal; Ken Fanning found a woman’s 14K Gold Ring with a Heart design ontop; and others found numerous coins, sinkers, cans, junk jewelry, et cetera. If this droughtcontinues and Heyburn Lake keeps dropping, there will be more GOLD found there. Youshould still have most of a month left to water hunt.

After the big feed 107 tokens were scattered as evenly as possible over a 30 yard X 70 yarddesignated area. There were 4 painted numbered/lettered Gallagher Civil War Minié balltokens for club member donated prizes, 91 painted Wheat Cent tokens for Silver Mercurydimes, and 12 painted clad quarters & painted pull tabs for Silver Quarters.

When the start signal was given there were 24 water hunters frothing the water. (and pleasequit asking me what causes the water to froth, ya think it might be the baked beans?) After 1hour+ of hunting, there were 9 of the silver dime tokens & 2 of the silver quarter tokens werenot recovered. Surprising that so many were not found this late in the season. But the lakewas down 3 feet and part of the area was a little silty.

Club member donated prizes were: $5.00 bill donated by Jody Hamilton won by Bill Rouse.$5.00 bill donated by John Hamilton won by Wally Dick. $5.00 Walmart Card donated byBill Rouse won by Lee Wierzchowski. $5.00 bill donated by Lee Wierzchowski won by JodyHamilton. Thanks for the donations.

Some of those finding larger quantities were: Ken Fanning 12 Silver Mercury Dimes, BillRouse 7 Silver Mercury Dimes, 2 Silver Quarters, & 1 prize token, Bob Cook 7 Silver

Mercury Dimes & 2 Silver Quarters, Wally Dick 7 Silver Mercury Dimes & 1 prize token,Lee Wierzchowski 6 Silver Mercury Dimes, 1 Silver Quarter, & 1 prize token, Rick York 7Silver Mercury Dimes & 1 Silver Quarter, Matt Fortney 5 Silver Mercury Dimes & 1 SilverQuarter, Jody Hamilton 5 Silver Mercury Dimes & 1 prize token, Cody Reese 6 SilverMercury Dimes.

One of the main reasons for this type of outing, besides the food of course, is to give non-water hunting members a chance to try their hand at it. Also, the fun and fellowship of beingwith people that enjoy the same hobby.

Again, if you missed this outing, you missed a great one. Don't miss the next one!

Gary Young reports that this was the 7th year for doing this hunt. The weatherwas super and with lots of kids. We had a good turnout from both clubs. Therewere several metal detectors and some were even dropped off for us to use.Overall, this years hunt was a BIG success as have been the ones in the past. Garymentioned that the kids had a great time as did the adults that were there to help.Gary and Cathy want to thank all of you that came out and helped and as always ifyou could not come you missed the fun but can do so next year.

The Ten Commandments of Metal Detecting

Submitted by Cody Reese

1. Thou shalt not leave behind unfilled excavations.

2. Thou shalt not trespass or defy in any way the lawful decrees of thy city, state, province or country.

3. Thou shalt not harm vegetation, the creatures of the field, natural resources or thepersonal property of others.

4. Thou shalt not covet the finds of thy companion. Nor shall ye covet his metaldetector, digging tool, or the hallowed place he diggeth.

5. Thou shalt not neglect thy family and friends whilst in the endless pursuit of thishobby.

6. Thou shalt assist the distraught owners of lost goods, and the archaeologists, theenforcers of law, and all others who may need thy skill as a metal detectorist.

7. Thou shalt return found treasures to the proper owners, whenever their trueidentity can be rightfully determined.

8. Thou shalt report to the proper authorities any find relating to criminal activity orof archaeological significance.

9. Thou shalt be considerate of others on the beach, and in other public places whilstwaving thy searchcoil, and digging holes in the sand and soil.

10. Thou shalt speak out against unjust laws and stand firm against the Philistineswho would cast out all those who would use detectors of metal.

and.....

If thou dost not abide by these Commandments, may ye be plagued with mineral-bearing rocks, hard packed soil, pestilence, serpents, locusts, poisonous vegetation, and great multitudes of pulltabs, bottle caps and rusty nails. May ye spend theremaining years of thy wretched life digging signals of false origins. For thineiniquities shall surely bring the overzealous wrath of the ignorant, heathenbureaucrats down upon those of us who are innocent. For we are the righteous andthe just and ye who do not obey the Ten Commandments of Metal Detecting aredoomed to bad luck.

Another Method to Clean Pennies

Submitted by Dale Carpenter

The article in the September club newsletter about cleaning pennies reminded me of anothermethod that we used years ago. Of course this or almost any cleaning method should only beused on pennies that have little or no numismatic value. They come out of the ground sooo

nasty. First you need a tumbler. You often see them at garage sales for a few dollars. Tumbleyour pennies (about 200) in low suds soapy water & a medium such as sand, glass beads, ornut shells for an hour or so. This removes the crusty dirt. Rinse them off & put back in your

tumbler some water, a small amount of medium & a teaspoon or so of cream of tarter. Tumbletill you get the result you want. You'll be amazed at what the cream of tarter will do. This

formula was sold commercially years ago, & if you were a customer.....I thank you & now youknow. Dale Carpenter Joplin, Mo. (really old men

Know the LawSubmitted by Lee Wierzchowski

Information here is paraphrased from articles from the Oklahoma Historical Society and theArmy Corps of Engineers. Remember there are state and federal regulations that protect sitesagainst unauthorized relic digging. The state historic sites and some state parks are culturalresources, with evidence of the state’s past underground. Some famous historical battles tookplace on historic home sites.

According to the Oklahoma Antiquities Law, unauthorized relic digging can result in a fine ofup to $500 and/or up to 30 days in the county jail. Further, the law states, … All artifactsrecovered from excavations on state lands must be deposited in an Oklahoma museum orrepository to make archaeological materials available to qualified researchers for study and toresponsible museums for display.

According to the Oklahoma Historical Society, looting of the prehistoric Native American siteat Spiro Mounds in the 1930s led to the creation of laws to preserve and scientifically researcharchaeological sites.

The ideal place for metal detecting is on private property with first getting permission from theowner.

However, Oklahoma lakes governed by the Army Corps of Engineers do allow metal detectorsat designated swim beaches. Areas labeled as a swim beach or previously disturbed areas canbe accessed with a metal detector. It’s always best to call the lake office and find out when andwhere they can use the metal detectors. Metal detectors wouldn’t be allowed on federal landthat hasn’t been disturbed at all.

If a person finds an item that has cultural or architectural value it should be turned in to thelake office so the item can be preserved.

The Corps of Engineers adheres to the code of federal regulation in Chapter 3 of Title 36public law that governs parks, forests and public property.

The code states the use of metal detectors is permitted on designated beaches or otherpreviously disturbed areas unless prohibited by the District Commander for reasons ofprotection of archaeological, historical or paleontological resources.

Essentially, all finds should be turned in to the office except for non-identifiable items such ascoins of value less than $25.

According to Oklahoma parks.com, a person visiting the state parks may use his metaldetector with permission from the park manager and after obtaining a use permit for eachspecific park. However, disturbing or collecting natural resources such as rocks, arrowheadsand fossils found within the parks is prohibited.

The bottom line is, ask permission first before attempting to treasure hunt on any land, whether private or public.

Treasure Hunting Rules of SafetySubmitted by Cody Reese

1. Leave vines alone. Don't get tangled up in them, don't pull them, don't trip over them, don'tharass them, and if they wiggle and hiss, run like the wind.

2. Nature's creatures are only cute from a distance. Up close, they have fangs, claws, talon, tusks, stingers, noxious spray, and bigger kinfolk nearby.

3. Before digging that signal, make sure the buzzing is coming from your headphones, not thehole in the ground.

4. You can outrun snakes. You might outrun bees. You cannot outrun buckshot, so always getpermission before metal detecting on private property.

5. Don't hunt at night without proper lighting. If you are afraid to use a flashlight, you'd best re-read rule #4.

6. Always take a friend with you--or a cell phone. If not, at least carry a pistol to use if thepain gets too bad while you're lying there alone on a fire ant nest, with two broken legs, a

busted head, and a curious squirrel scampering across your torso.

11

7. If you step in a hole, the law of gravity says you will seek out the bottom. This can be a realproblem with deeper holes.

8. Speaking of gravity. There is a law of physics that says gravity will pull an object toward anunsuspended object until resistance is met. In the case of broken tree limbs, this will be your

head.

9. Trust me, you "cannot" clear that barbwire fence in a single bound.

10. Even if you ignore rules 1 through 9 above, at least believe me when I tell you never to usea three- leaf plant as tissue.
