Our April 27th Speaker

Donna Blanchard

Donna Blanchard is the Managing Director of Kumu Kahua Theatre in Honolulu, HI. She has a BFA from Wright State University, and was recruited by KKT because of her commit-ment to “community story” and her unique background in performing arts and business development. Honolulu Sunset’s 2014-2015

YOUTH SERVICES ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Jefferson School STEM Hydroponic Project - Our club provided Hydroponic Plant Sys-

tems to all 17 classrooms at Jefferson Elementary School to promote a STEM study project

for the children. This approved District Grant project costing $2,759 is teaching the students

about Green Living projects that could help them in the future.

Support to State of Hawaii Efforts to Reach Children - Honolulu Sunset provided 10

volunteer Rotarians to assist with the State of Hawaii "Hawaii Children and Youth Day"

event at the state capital on October 5, 2014.

Providing Tools for Student Success - Our club provided 75 backpacks and over $300 of

school supplies to Jefferson School Aug 29, 2015. The backpacks and supplies were provid-

ed to ensure students from low income families that cannot afford to purchase the items will

have the items required to succeed.

Support to UH Rotaract Club and their Activities - We provide support to our UH Rota-

ract Club this year. We held the first ever joint Honolulu Sunset/UH Rotaract meeting at

their venue on the UH campus that was attended by 25 of our Sunset Rotarians and 18 UH

Rotaract members. Our Sunset Club and members made financial contributions to their

Make-A-Wish project and to their St. Mary's Orphanage project in the Philippines..

Promoting Literacy to Students:

- Participated in the Rotary International Dictionary Project that resulted in our club distrib-

uting 240 dictionaries to all third grades students in three Honolulu Elementary Schools. Ten

of our members visited the classrooms and personally distributed the dictionaries to the chil-

dren and then broke off into small groups to go over the uses of the dictionaries with the

children.

Support to Community Outreach Projects - We presented to the US Marines toy dona-

tions from our Honolulu Sunset members for their annual Christmas "Toys for Tots" program

that gives to needy children throughout Oahu.

Interaction with Interact Programs - Our Youths Services Chair attended a one day Inter-

act Seminar on October 14, 2014 at Kapiolei High School. Six of our members and presi-

dent attended joint a meeting and dinner hosted by a Interact Club sponsored by the Hawaii

Kai Rotary Club.

Support to RYLA - Our club provided funds to support two students selected to attend

RYLA this Rotary Year. Our Member Nicole Limas served as a an adult facilitator at the

weekend event at Camp Erdman.
