PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

October is now upon us, time to slow the pace a bit and enjoy

the crisp air and cool nights. October was named by the

Romans who used a 10 month lunar calendar and with October

being the 8th month of the lunar year the month was named

after the Roman word octo – which means eight. When the

Romans eventually converted to the 12 month calendar year,

October became the 10th month of the year, but retained its

name.

October is packed with fun filled events for Corvette

enthusiasts. The Ocean City, Maryland, trip has been on my

bucket list for years, but since we have been watching

grandkids for the pasts 8 years, attending this event has been

out of the question. This is our last year of watching the little munchkins, and I would

never trade this for the world, but I do see us attending next year if at all possible. This

event is a huge gathering of Corvette enthusiasts. Currently 559 Corvettes are

registered. Mike and Renee Dansereau will also be hosting a wine class and tasting on

October 19th. Total Wine conducts these wine classes with a wine expert who is able to

provide insight into the wine’s characteristics, dominant flavors, and food pairings. High

end French wines will be featured at this class. Bordeaux, one of the most famous of

wine blends in the world will be one of 8 different wines on the menu. Red Bordeaux is

made from combining Cabernet Savignon and Merlot wines, with different regions of

France where the grapes are grown determining the dominant flavors of that wine. Also

on the list will be Pinot Noir, which originates from the Burgundy regions of France . The

grapes are tiny with a very thin skin resulting in a delicate, light to medium body.

These classes and tastings are so much more than just sampling wines, and at the end

of the last class, we all were invited to help finish the opened bottles of wine sampled

earlier, and we were more than happy to accommodate Roy. This will be my third wine

class that I have attended and it has helped me maintain focus and a positive outlook.

My philosophy as of late is “Life’s too short to drink cheap wine.” It certainly works for

me.

Elections for Club officers will be held at the November membership meeting. All offices

are open to anyone seeking to run with the exception of the President, which is a 2 year

term and open to new candidates every 2nd year. This year all of the candidates are

running unopposed so the Secretary will cast a single vote to elect the candidates on the

slate, with Ernie Betulia as Treasurer, Sharon Tosetti as Secretary, and Joyce Baiardi,

Jack Stacey, and Steve Widger as Directors at Large. With no new candidates for Vice

President, and 1 open position for Director at Large, the Executive Board will decide on

appointments for these open positions in December.

Our Adirondack Weekend

For those of you who developed a love of

muscle cars during the 60’s and 70’s, this is

the weekend for you. You are surrounded by

muscle cars, hot rods and Corvettes, from the

ridiculous to the sublime, in parking lots, on

the streets and clogging traffic. The smell of

high-octane fuel and burning rubber fills the

air. This is the essence of the Adirondack

National Hot Rod Show which brought more

than two thousand cars into Lake George, New

York on September 6 and 7, 2019.

Bob and Sue Wadyka along with Rich and Rhonda

Forristall traveled upstate on Thursday. Bob and Sue

have been bringing their Hot 71 to this two day show for

eleven years. This year Bob received an award for “Best

Corvette” chosen by Joyce Rochester and sponsored by

Albany Rods and Kustoms. This is quite an honor when

you factor in the number of registered Corvettes in the

show.

He was a bit nervous about winning the award as the

71 has very little room in the car for trophies.

However, this is a lovely engraved clock that fit in

the car with room to spare. This was the best

weekend, weather wise, we have ever had in Lake

George, with warm days and slightly cool nights. NO

RAIN! There was even swimming in the lake. YEH!

Sunday morning dawned bright and clear and it was

time to travel seven miles down the road for the 28th

Annual Adirondack VetteFest Show sponsored by our

friends from the Adirondack Corvette Club. This is a totally separate event from the Hot

Rod Show but they wisely hold it on the same weekend for a bigger draw at their show.

They registered a record high 111 cars and the 50/50 raffle reached a high of $1400.00.

Happy Hour on the Trolley

On Saturday, September 19th, 35 Club members enjoyed happy hour at the East Haven

Trolley Museum. We want to give a huge shout out to Mike Hildreth for arranging the

logistics of our visit. We were given the use of a private trolley car which was lined with

tables for our great spread of food and drink. We traveled out on the trolley line,

stopping along the way to learn about some history of the area. On our return Mike had

Dennis and Stan take the controls. They managed to stay on the tracks, had no

speeding tickets and found their way back to the storage barns. Mike talked about the

history of the various cars in the barn and the restoration of each of them. In the

workshop was a PATH car which had been recovered from the Trade Towers on 9/11.

This car came to the Trolley Museum because of a mistake that was made in the original

plans. Originally it was designated to go to Buffalo, New York, but because of an

incorrect measurement, the car would not fit in the space available. An insuring search

for an alternative location that housed historic rail cars was begun. The Trolley Museum

was selected as the resting place for this historic piece of machinery. The car on

display, #745, was the lead car of the train that day. The story behind this recovery is

that on 9/11, the train was able to be evacuated without any loss of life.

The trolley run is an historic piece of local history. The current route at one-time in its

history would deliver passengers to the Talmadge Hotel. The hotel was famously known

as Nellie Green's prior to being called the Talmadge Hotel and during this time it was a

local speakeasy. Yes, Nellie Green was a local bootlegger; the trolley was one of the

ways in which folks could arrive at that establishment.

After our Trolley ride we checked out the displays in the museum. Everyone had a great

time.

Thanks again Mike, our man at the museum, and to Joyce Baiardi, the event organizer!

Let’s do it again sometime.

For Corvettes Only Show

September 22, 2019

Ten Club members traveled to the Crystal Mall for FCO’s annual show. The morning was

very foggy and driving was difficult but once the sun came out it was a beautiful day.

Club Corvette found this shady area and everyone enjoyed the day. We wandered over

to the Longhorn Steak House for lunch, as there were free appetizer coupons in our

goody bags. It does help if you remember to bring the coupon to the restaurant. Gail

and Lucy both went home with raffle baskets and Don won a trophy for his C4 Pace Car.

Congratulations to all of the winners!

Cruise to Harry’s

We gathered,

We cruised,

We ate. A perfect Corvette event

No other words are needed

While creating this collage I needed a picture of the front of Harry’s with the name in it. I went

into my archive of event photos to find the one that I used. On the left are two gentlemen

waiting for their food. Can you identify the one on the right wearing the gray sweatshirt? His

identity will be revealed at the November meeting.

CHEVROLET INTRODUCES FIRST HARDTOP CORVETTE

CONVERTIBLE

Open-air driving has always been a part of the Chevrolet Corvette’s heritage. In

fact, when the Corvette debuted in 1953, it was available only as a convertible.

The 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray convertible builds off that heritage as the

first hardtop and mid-engine convertible in Corvette history.

“We put the world on notice when we introduced the first mid-engine Chevrolet

Corvette a few months ago, and now we’re raising the bar with the first-ever

hardtop Corvette convertible,” said Brian Sweeney, Chevrolet U.S. vice president.

“And the convertible will be priced only $7,500 more than entry 1LT Stingray

coupe.”

First and foremost, a convertible

The mid-engine 2020 Corvette Stingray was engineered first and foremost as a

convertible. The convertible maintains the tunnel-dominant structure and use of

high-integrity die-cast parts found in the Stingray coupe.

The team engineered the hardtop to stow seamlessly into the body, maintaining

the Stingray’s impressive ability to store two sets of golf clubs in the trunk even

with the top down. The convertible also keeps the coupe’s front storage

compartment, which can fit an airline-spec carry-on and a laptop bag.

Page 15: CLUB CORVETTE OF CONNECTICUT, INC · 2019-10-10 · Happy Hour on the Trolley On Saturday, September 19th, 35 Club members enjoyed happy hour at the East Haven Trolley Museum. We

The hardtop provides a quieter cabin, increased security and a cleaner look

compared to the previous softtop designs.

“Our goal from the beginning was to make sure customers didn’t have to sacrifice

any functionality, performance or comfort when choosing the hardtop convertible,”

said Josh Holder, Corvette program engineering manager. “We managed to keep

the same design theme as the coupe, as well as the exceptional storage capacity

and track capability.”

Inspired by jets

Like the coupe, the Stingray convertible’s design was inspired by fighter jets . The

tonneau cover features aerodynamically shaped nacelles influenced by the housing

used for jet engines. The nacelles, which were also used as inspiration on the

Chevrolet Engineering Research Vehicle (CERV) I and II, as well as the Corvette SS

and SR2 concepts, help reduce air recirculation into the cabin and provide a

remarkably exotic profile with the top up or down. The tonneau also provides a

rear power-adjustable window and a vent for mid-engine cooling.

The two-piece top can be activated at speeds up to 30 mph and retract in as few as

16 seconds. It is powered by six electric motors — a Corvette first — and uses

encoders for precise control. Switching to electric motors from hydraulic systems

helps increase reliability. A body-colored roof is standard, while Carbon Flash

metallic-painted nacelles and roof are optional.

Careful attention was paid to make sure the engine could breathe when stored

underneath the tonneau cover. The sheet-molded composite top stows in a

compartment made from lightweight composite panels and heat shields to manage

heat from the engine.

A divider glass window in the middle of the vehicle can be power adjusted with the

top up or down. The glass has been optimized to reduce air recirculation and wind

noise in the cabin for improved quietness. The roof system design, combined with

the same rear spoiler used on the Stingray coupe’s Z51 Performance Package,

results in identical drag between the coupe and convertible with the top up.

Engineers tweaked the chassis for the convertible, with springs and dampers tuned

specifically to provide nearly the same performance as the coupe.

No compromise performance

Like the Stingray coupe, the convertible is powered by the next-generation 6.2L

Small Block V-8 LT2 engine, the only naturally aspirated V-8 in the segment. It will

Page 16: CLUB CORVETTE OF CONNECTICUT, INC · 2019-10-10 · Happy Hour on the Trolley On Saturday, September 19th, 35 Club members enjoyed happy hour at the East Haven Trolley Museum. We

Pag

e16

produce 495 horsepower (369 kW) and 470 lb-ft (637 Nm) of torque when

equipped with performance exhaust — the most horsepower and torque for any

entry Corvette.

The LT2 is paired with Chevrolet’s first eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, which

provides lightning-fast shifts and excellent power transfer. This transmission is

uniquely designed to provide the best of both worlds: the spirited, directly

connected feeling of a manual and the premium driving comfort of an automatic.

The double-paddle de-clutch feature even allows the driver to disconnect the clutch

by holding both paddles for more manual control.

When combined, the advanced propulsion system, revised chassis tuning and

retractable hardtop make the 2020 Stingray the most no-compromise Corvette

convertible in history.

Build and price tool now available

Interested Stingray shoppers can now build and price their own Corvette coupe or

convertible on the 2020 Corvette visualizer at Chevrolet.com.

A dedicated Chevrolet Corvette Concierge team will provide 2020 Corvette

customers with answers about the vehicle discovery, buying and ownership

process. The team can be reached by calling 866-424-3892. Customers can also

live chat with a Corvette Concierge by visiting Chevrolet.com. The team is available

from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. EDT Mondays through Fridays.

The 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray coupe goes into production at GM’s Bowling

Green Assembly in late 2019, with the convertible following in late first-quarter

2020. A right-hand drive version of the convertible will be available in select

international markets at a later date.

WINE CLASS & TASTING Join us for a wine tasting journey with some extraordinary red wines. High end wines have historically been red. Bordeaux and Burgundy, Cabernet and Pinot Noir, these regions and grapes have long been

considered among the best. Come learn about these wines, how they are made and what makes them great . These are wines that command a high price because they are considered some of the best in the world.

You will sample about 8 bottles of wine and snack on cheese and crackers. We might even throw in a white.

2:00 PM

LUNCH AT ABC
