Materials: Glue Markers Cloud Template Colored Paper Strips: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple Procedure:

1. Have members cut out the cloud template and write their names nice and big in the center of the cloud.

2. Instruct the members that they are going to have each color represent something about them. Prompt them to write the answers to the following questions on the corresponding color strip:

• Red: Your best friend’s name • Orange: Your birthday • Yellow: What you want to be when you grow up • Green: Your favorite book • Blue: Your favorite hobby • Purple: Your favorite animal

3. Glue the color strips in color order (ROYGBV) onto the cloud 4. Display on the “Great Work” board!

2-INGREDIENT PLAY DOUGH

SUPPLIES NEEDED:

• 1 CUP CONDITIONER OR LOTION

• 2 CUPS CORNSTARCH

• FOOD COLORING (OPTIONAL)

DIRECTIONS:

1. Mix the conditioner and cornstarch in a bowl, and manipulate it until dough forms. It

helps to mix it well first with a spoon and then using your hands.

2. Add a few drops of food coloring to the mixture if desired. You could also split up the

batch of white dough to create different colors with the food coloring.

3. Manipulate and play with dough. Store it in a sealed baggie when finished playing,

and it could last about a week.

BALANCING ROBOT STEM Materials for Balancing Robot Science Activity:

• Scissors • Two pennies • Tape • Crayons or colored pencils • Robot printable

How to Make the Balancing Robot 1. Cut out the robots. 2. To make the robot balance you’ll want to stick two pennies onto the hands of the robot. 3. Flip your robot over to the back. Place a small tape loop on the hands of the robot. 4. Press a penny onto each hand. (You can leave it just like this, but we like to attach the

second robot to the back so you can’t see the pennies!) 5. Stick another tape loop on top of the pennies 6. Press the second robot onto the back. (To keep the top part of the robot from opening

up, you can also place a small piece of tape between the two robot bodies to hold them together.)

Exploring Balance and Center of Gravity Here’s the fun part! Show the students a balancing robot in action on your finger, but don’t let them know how to make it just yet.

Now, give each student one of their cut out robots (they can attach the second robot to the back once they’ve figured out how to make it balance), 2 pennies, and some tape.Give them time to try out sticking the pennies to different parts of the robot to try to get the robot to balance on their fingers. I love watching them explore and discuss with their friends all the various ideas they come up with! Many will figure it out on their own. For those that don’t, you can show them the correct placement of the pennies or invite other students to help them.

“MAGIC” LIGHT REFRACTION DRAWINGS

This is a fun ‘magic’ science trick that you can try at home to astound your friends and family!

What you need:

• glass of water • paper • pen

Procedure: Draw something on a piece of paper, and see how it looks when you look through a glass of water. Be creative! You can draw anything you like and see how it looks through the glass.

Questions to ponder:

• How does your picture change? • What bits stay the same? • Does image size matter? • What happens if you try with a wider (or narrower) glass? • What happens if you move the glass closer to the image? • Or further away? • Does it change if you look at it straight on or slightly from the side?

Ideas to try:

1. Draw a picture of a face, with the eyes looking one way, and see which way the eyes are looking when you look through the glass.

2. Draw two arrows, both pointing the same way, and then look at one (or both) through a glass of water. Which way are they pointing now? Does it matter how far away the glass of water is? What happens if you move your head from side to side?

=

What we are seeing here is a physics concept called refraction, or the bending of light. When light passes through transparent objects (in this case, the front of the glass, the water, and the back of the glass), it refracts or bends. When the glass is full of water, it acts as a cylindrical convex lens, and produces an inverted image. The inverted image may appear larger, smaller or the same size, depending on where you position the paper, the glass, and your viewpoint. Another variable is the size (diameter) of the glass.

MARKER CHROMATOGRAPHY SCIENCE EXPERIMENT Supplies: • Coffee filters • washable markers • wooden craft stick • binder clip • jar with an inch or two of water in the bottom • paper towel • pipe cleaners Steps:

1. Draw a design with markers on the coffee filter. Using dark, bright colors will yield the best results. The design can be circular or asymmetrical, whatever you feel inspired to do!

2. Fold the paper in half and then half again until it is narrow enough to fit inside your jar. 3. Place a craft stick at the top of the wedge of paper. Attach a binder clip to the paper and the

craft stick. 4. Place the paper in the jar of water (suspended by the craft stick) so that only just the tip of

the end is touching the water. 5. Watch as the paper draws water up from the jar. You will start to see the colors separate and

spread! 6. When the water line reaches the top of the paper, pull it out, unfold it, and let it dry on a

paper towel. 7. Once the paper is dry you can display it as is or fold it into a butterfly, a gift bag, or a beautiful

flower!

The Science Behind the Marker Chromatography Science Experiment: Marker inks are made from many different colored dyes. (This is most obvious with dark colors such as black and purple.) Each dye is made up of different chemicals, some heavier and some lighter, that travel at different speeds as the water moves them up the paper. The heavier dyes will separate out first and move more slowly while the lighter dyes keep moving faster up the paper, creating the tie-dyed or washed out effect. Try to count how many different colors you see on your final product! Chromatography is used every day in professional chemistry and biology labs.

Collect the Eggs Numbers Games

Page 15: CLUB AT HOME...CLUB AT HOME Packet #2 Table of Contents 1. FITNESS FUN: • Frog Yoga Poses • High Intensity Interval Training Workout 2. BE A LITERACY LEADER: • A Spring Walk

Instructions:

Print game boards. If desired, laminate for durability. Print egg cards on card stock. If desired, laminate.

Cut out cards.

Choose a game board (Even Numbers or Odd Numbers).

To play:

Players need one button each (or another manipulative) to move around the game board.

Players also need one dice to roll to determine how many spaces to move.

Players take rolling a dice and moving to a space.

IF you are playing the Even Numbers game, and IF you land on an even number (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, etc.), you get

to collect an egg.

IF you are playing the Odd Numbers game, and IF you land on an odd number (1,3,5,7,9,11,13, etc.), you get to

collect an egg. The player who has collected the most eggs at the end of the game is declared the winner.

Pointillism Art with Q-tips and Watercolors

Materials:

• Liquid watercolors or paint • Paper • Q-tips

Instructions:

Set up the activity on a tray or mat with a sheet of watercolor paper and your watercolor paints in individual dishes or cups with a Q-tip or cotton swab for each color.

The paper can be used whole or you can cut it into smaller pieces if you like. Half and quarter sheets work well with Q-tip pointillism.

Dip a Q-tip in one of the liquid watercolors, then press the tip to the paper.

And again. You can get a number of dots out of one paint dip. When the color is starting to fade, dip the Q-tip in the paint again before pressing it to the paper. Or use a new Q-tip and a different color of paint.

Let the artwork dry.

CRUMPLED PAPER ART

Materials:

• White paper • Watercolors OR Markers + Water • Paintbrush • Scissors

Instructions:

1. Cut your white paper into smaller pieces. We split ours into fourths so we ended up with four 6 inch x 4.5 inch pieces per sheet of construction paper.

2. Take one piece of your cut construction paper and crumple it up into a ball.

3. Choose one color and use it to paint all around the outside of your ball.

4. Gently unfold it, and see how it looks. Press it down gently.

5. Crumple it up again, and paint it with another color.

6. Gently unfold it and press it down.

7. Let the papers dry.
