Officer Training Day provided officers from all the clubs with needed instruction to carry out the duties of the leadership positions in their club. We also had games, pizza for lunch, and a lot of fun! Thank you to Grass Valley Creek members and leaders for hosting the day and thank you to our officer trainers: Cecile Cody, Ronie Millsap, Deanna DeAn-toni, Audra Lane, Pam Coffey, Kathy Johnson and Vicky Whaley. I hope the club officers will use what they learned at the training at their club business meetings. County Event Dates are listed in the 4-H Calendar of Events at the back of the Clover-leaf. Please check the dates for the Skate Party/ Cake Decorating Day, and for County Pres-entation Day. It was decided at the last 4-H Council meeting that clubs will host county events for 2 years in a row before turning over the event to another club. 4-H Office Hours are now 8:00 am – 4:30 pm, Monday thru Thursday. Mountain View 4-H Club recently made a donation of $250 to the 4-H Council operat-ing budget. The club raised the money at a car wash held specifically for this reason. Thank you Mountain View 4-H! At the October council meeting, during the budget approval process, it was decided that we would be asking the clubs to make donations to the council this year in any amount that was feasible for their club. Emerald Star applications for this year are due to the 4-H Office by December 1st. Letters of recommendation are also due by this date. Please see the October Cloverleaf for details, or call the 4-H Office for ideas of what to do an Emerald Star project on. We have had some great projects done by members in the past and I would love to see some more! 4-H Policy News: Our county 4-H leaders have voted to use the Danish system in all 4-H county events where members are competing for awards, starting with this year’s Record Book Judging, and continuing with 2008 county events. This will not include FFD this year, but will include it next year. The Danish system judges members against a stan-dard, instead of against each other. Members who meet the standard are given awards accordingly. An example would be: all members who have entries of gold or silver medal quality would be awarded gold or silver medals. Members would not compete against each other for the top award. This is in line with current State 4-H Policy for incentives and recognition. More members are given positive recognition for their work with this method. Note: This is a 4-H Council decision, and does not apply to Trinity County Fair awards, as the fair is not a 4-H event. A second item decided by the 4-H council is that members who decide to sell a market animal as a 4-H member must also sign up to partici-pate in showmanship with that species. This would apply to our county fair. The vast majority of members are already doing this. When youth represent themselves as 4-H members, there is a certain level of expectation by the general public, and participating in showmanship is one of those expectations.

State Record Book Training: On Sunday, February 24, 2008 the State 4-H Office is holding a Record Book Training workshop at Shasta College in Redding for the counties in the North State region. Each county is allotted 10 spaces for participants. I have one space left for a volunteer leader who would like to attend and receive this informative training. The training will be from 11-3, and you will receive all training materials at the workshop. This is an excellent opportunity to really learn how to help your club with their Record Books! I encourage anyone who is interested to please call me at the 4-H Office ASAP so I can turn in a registration form for you. All New 4-H Volunteer Leaders: A reminder to all new prospective 4-H Volunteers that you cannot hold any 4-H project meetings until you have enrolled and paid your fees, been live scan cleared, and attended a 4-H orientation meeting with 4-H Program Represen-tative Audra Lane. You are not covered by the University of California Liability Insurance until you complete all portions of your certification. Each new leader will receive a formal letter and leader card from the 4-H Office when their certification is complete. Are you a Junior or Teen Leader? If you are, then you will be working with your project leader to help plan and carry out the project. You should be preparing with your project leader for the meetings, giving presentations, and be doing some of the actual teach-ing of the project as your progress and get older. As a Teen Leader you may actually do most or all of the teaching. Remember though that a certified Volunteer leader must always be present at your meetings. To get credit for your year of leadership you must complete the Junior and Teen Leadership Report and include it with your Record Book next fall. Start off right by completing the first page of it, including the goals, before the start of the project. If any 4-H members, or project leaders have questions about the junior and teen leader program, please call Audra at the 4-H Office. Project Loans Available: The Farm Service Agency makes loans to individual rural youth 4-H members to establish and operate income-producing projects. This would apply to a market animal project, or a small business such a lawn-mowing done as part of a 4-H project. The project must be part of an organized and supervised program of work. The project must be planned and operated with the help of their program advisor (project leader), produce sufficient income to repay the loan, and provide the youth with practical business and educational experience. Club leaders were given an information booklet and application form at the last council meeting to share with their club. If this loan program is something that interests you, and you did not receive information from your club leader, please call the 4-H Office for further information.

4-H Safety Manual: The State 4-H Office has provided our office with a new publica-tion to help volunteer leaders insure safe practices are followed in their project meetings. This 18 page manual will be given to each volunteer leader in the next few months at your club meeting. Please read it over carefully and use the portions which apply to your project.

County Presentation Day 2008: The date has been set for Saturday, March 15th, 2008. Trinity River 4-H Club will again be hosting Presentation Day at the Burnt Ranch School. They did an awesome job last year of putting on Presentation Day, so we are look-ing forward to another fun event. Now is the time to start thinking of what you want to do for Presentation Day. Please refer to the 4-H Presentation Day Manual for ideas on what to do, how to put together a presentation, and the types of presentations you can do. The manual is on the 4-H county website, or available from your club leader. Think of a catchy title, and first sentence or two, and you are on your way. It is that easy to get started once you have decided on a topic. Although it is encouraged, it doesn’t have to be some-thing you are doing as a project, it can be on a hobby, talent or skill, or other interest you may have. Almost anything can be made into an interesting presentation that others will really like to see. For those who are hesitant to speak before a big group, the table top dis-play is a great way to get started in the 4-H world of demonstrations and public speaking. More information will follow in the December/January Cloverleaf. If you want to do a Presentation this year, why not set yourself the goal of deciding on a topic, and writing your introductory statement by Thanksgiving vacation?

4-H Council Meeting: The next 4-H Council meeting will be on Wednesday, Decem-ber 5th at the 4-H Office in Hayfork. The meeting starts at 6:00 pm. Each club needs to start sending a leader to the council meetings. I cannot stress enough how important it is to the overall success of the whole program that each club participates and helps at the county in the ways that they can. Please at least make the effort to attend the 3 meetings per year that are in your area. As you can tell by reading the Cloverleaf, important issues are dis-cussed and decided upon by the council at each meeting.

Don’t Forget to Look for the Clover! If you find the 4-H Clover (one is hidden somewhere in each Cloverleaf issue, on any page except the front or back pages) call the 4-H Office at (530) 628-5495 and tell us where you found it. Be sure to ask your Mom or Dad first. Your name will be put in a hat for the monthly drawing. The name of the prize winner will be announced in the next issue of the Cloverleaf! Join the fun! Call today!

Record Book judging for the past year has just been completed, and I want to congratulate all of you 4-H members who turned in a book. The quality of the books was very good overall, and the judges could tell that you spent a lot of time on your books. Your 4-H stories were wonderful, thank you for sharing them. Keep up the good work this year. Club leaders from each club will be attending Record Book training in February to learn even more about how to help you complete your Record Books. Be sure to use the up-dated version of the Record Book forms this year – they are available on the county and state 4-H websites. Remember not to count any shows that offer Jackpot premiums on your PDR. 4-H policy does not permit 4-H member participation in, nor give credit for any awards won, at Jackpot shows.
