Since its inception, Beijing Computing Center
has completed hundreds o research projects
commissioned by the national and municipal
government, as well as numerous service-
oriented projects or multiaceted businesscustomers. As such, it has played a key role
in the popularity, adoption and development
o computing solutions in China.
Today, Beijing Computing Center has
successully deployed many super-cloud
service platorms. Operated on an enterprise-
service model, these cloud platorms
bring together the products,solutions and
services o both upstream and downstream
suppliers to create a collaborative,cloud-
based alliance. Ultimately, the center seeks
to build a complementary partnership that
can mutually benet every member o its
supply chain, rom R&D and production
to commercialization and application
deployment. In this way, it will create a
dynamic, independent and innovativebusiness ecosystem.
Beijing Industrial Cloud Project
In recent years, the Beijing Industrial
Cloud has been the centers major cloud-
computing project. This massive new
platorm is designed to enable small and
medium-sized enterprises, especiallyBeijings technology innovation companies,
to obtain the resources and services they
need at a low cost. It also helps signicantly
reduce the overall energy consumption
o IT enterprises in the Beijing area. This
encourages greener economic development
and establishes a cloud-based service
model that can support the development o
next-generation data centers. However, as the business has grown, the
Beijing Industrial Cloud platorm has aced
more and more challenges. These have
included rapid data growth, long-term
data retention, managing vast volumes o
historical data with a high accumulative rate,
and the need or high-perormance storage
or the high-perormance computing. For
the continued success o the platorm, it
was critical that the center nd new ways
to ensure its storage resources are used
eciently, saely and continuously. Beijing
Industrial Cloud needed to optimize the
allocation o storage resources, improve the
eciency o the entire storage system and
meet the stringent capacity demands o
high-perormance computations. To address these critical operational
requirements, Hitachi Data Systems
proposed a solution based on Hitachi
NAS Platorm (HNAS) 3080, powered by
BlueArc, and Hitachi Adaptable Modular
Storage (AMS) 2500 solutions. Using
state-o-the-art capacity allocation
technology, the Hitachi solution meets the
rigorous demands o the Beijing Industrial
Cloud in the key areas o perormance,
reliability, capacity and manageability.
During the two-week storage configuration, installation and
evaluation process, Beijing Computing Center also expressed
its great satisfaction at the price-to-performance advantage of
Hitachi storage products.

Highly Available, High-perormanceHitachi Storage Solutions
The rst phase o the Beijing Industrial Cloudplatorm sought to build a storage system
or science and engineering computing
applications. The goal was to build a storage
platorm with a raw capacity o 250TB that
could eectively support both SAN and NAS
+ SAN systems simultaneously.
The storage inrastructure o the HNAS and
SAN storage inrastructure was a crucialaspect o the project, and ensuring that the
system could support a huge amount o
data trac without compromising reliability
and eciency was key to success. HNAS
3080 and AMS 2500 storage platorms are
specically designed or processing large
data volumes and supporting multiple-
user-access environments. The entire
storage environment can comortablyaccommodate a storage capacity o up to
4PB, ar surpassing the centers storage
requirements, both today and in the uture.
As can be seen in Figure 1,
the storage network topology
o the Beijing Industrial Cloud
platorm mainly consists o
the high perormance HNAS3080 device and an AMS
2500 storage system with
60 units o high-perormance
600GB 15000RPM SAS
disks and 120 units o 2TB
7200RPM SATA disks.
The introduction o Hitachi
NAS Platorm aimed
to improve the centers
eciency and perormance
or le and data sharing by
undamentally eliminating
system sprawl and trac
bottlenecks. With the virtualization unctions
o HNAS, such as virtual servers, virtual
volumes and virtual storage pools, the
centers storage administrators can noweectively allocate storage capacity or
dierent applications and users. HNAS
also provides an intelligent le tiering
unction, enabling policy-based hierarchical
storage management to match data to
user or application needs. In the event o
overload or system ailure, the virtual server
automatically adjusts to meet the ailover
and load-balancing requirements. Thevirtual server automatically perorms ailover
in the event o system ailure to provide
high availability, and can also be manually
migrated to achieve load balancing.
Cutting-edge Architecture,Functionality and Throughput:

eliminates the complexity o managing and
operating specic products and technology.
There were several key requirements or the
new On-Demand Storage service platorm. The solution had to start small, but had to
have the capability to scale as and when Siy
and its customers needs would grow. We
wanted the On-Demand Storage platorm
to be uture ready or technologies such as
storage virtualization, thin provisioning and
unied storage (SAN/NAS/content/archival)
platorm, as these would become a key game
changer or the business as our customersneeds grow, says Executive President o
Enterprise Services at Siy, P J Nath.
Siy also wanted to have the fexibility to
add on products rom non-Hitachi vendors,
depending on the requirements laid down by
customers. In addition, the service provider
wanted support or tiered storage, in-depth
reporting and a chargeback mechanism. And o course, the storage had to be
cost-eective as well.

Siy explored various solutions available in
the market to nd the right architecture or
this platorm. The Hitachi Data Systems
solution oered us the best architecture to
enable scalability and provisioning o new
eatures as and when we need them,
says Nath.
Hitachi Inrastructure EnsuresScalability, Reliability
Siys On-Demand Storage service combines
award winning Hitachi Adaptable Modular
Storage 2500 and Hitachi NAS Platorm
3080, powered by BlueArc. Together, they
create consolidated, easy to manage pools
o storage capacities that can be provisioned
as needed to support a wide range oapplications and data types. This can be done
rom a single, integrated inrastructure that is
secure, reliable, scalable, cost-eective and
agile in the ace o changing demands.
The sotware part o the solution includes
Hitachi Storage Capacity Reporter, powered
by Aptare. With these tools, the Siy team
and its end customers can always be incontrol o each bit o space and how it is
being utilized.
Siy On-Demand Storage provides an
excellent alternative to the traditional
onsite, dedicated storage systems, which
are mostly procured on ad hoc basis. In
todays unpredictable business environment,
IT departments most oten either end
up procuring higher capacity up ront to
meet unexpected demands or all short
o capacity when the storage systems arecritically needed, says Nath.
Benefts o the Hitachi DataSystems and Siy Relationship
A true business partnership: With this
modular platorm, Hitachi Data Systems
has enabled Siy to step into a new
business revenue stream with the leastamount o risk, while being prepared to
leaprog into the uture when business
demands it. Cloud storage is still a
new business avenue, and Siy aims to
be the irst inormation aware, storage
on demand service provider. Siy can
conidently enter a new business area
with little investment and a long term
roadmap clearly laid out by HitachiData Systems.
We wanted the On-Demand Storage platform
to be future ready for technologies like storage
virtualization and thin provisioning, as these wouldbecome a key game changer for the business as our
customers grow.

Add as and when needed: Siy has
successully installed a Hitachi storage
inrastructure that can scale out as needed.
As the uptake o storage increases, Siy will
seamlessly expand capacity across its Tier3 hosting acilities. Further, Hitachi innovation
and ocus in the storage space will enable Siy
to leverage top technology advancements,
such as virtualization, partitioning, new disk
ormats and so on, without ripping apart the
deployed inrastructure.
Lower total cost o ownership (TCO):
Hitachi storage, with integration capabilities
and scalable architecture, allowed Siy to
invest minimally, yet rollout a eature rich
On-Demand Storage platorm that can
scale to meet capacity requirements as
well as add more eatures as business
demands grow.
Easy management, transer o benefts
to customers: With Hitachi Capacity
Reporter, Siy gets very easy-to-useconguration and management tools that
enable easy daily operations. Further,
Siy can deliver orecasting capabilities
based on actual perormance and growth
to its customers.
Being able to deliver on stringent SLAs:
Siy delivers up to 99.99 percent guaranteed
SLA on its On-Demand Storage services. While a lot o this has to do with Siys
expertise in managed services, the reliability
o Hitachi products is a key reason or the
condence in being able to oer such SLAs.
Ability to grow heterogeneously:
The Hitachi platorm or Siys On-Demand
Storage service is open, which means Siy
is not constrained by the platorm to buyonly Hitachi products. Siy is ree to choose
storage boxes as per its requirements
and easily deploy them under the Hitachi
controller setup.
Inormation ocused delivery model:
The Hitachi platorm enables Siy to deliver
simple packages with SAN and NAS storage
bundled with other services to provide aninormation ocused, rather than a hardware
ocused data placement.

The Growth o Data
With the global economy still recovering
rom the nancial crisis, there is an added
urgency on the part o businesses to reduce
the cost o doing business. However,
due to the tremendous explosion in data
experienced by businesses around the world,
data management is now an imperative
or companies.
To meet the demands o managing
exponential data growth, there has been a
surge in the adoption o services provided
by top-tier data center operators, especiallyin lower cost regions o the world,
including Malaysia.
Recognizing the opportunity to oer a new
data center in Malaysia, Teliti Datacentres
launched its data center project in 2007.
The range o services oered to customers
around the world by the new data center
will include: data center tenancy solutions, network inrastructure, managed
services, security services and bandwidth
switching opportunities.
The Challenge: Build a WorldclassData Center
Consisting o two physical buildings, the acility
will have a total area o 375,000 sq. t. Telitiis scheduled to open the initial 45,000 sq. t.
in the rst hal o 2012 and expects to have
secured tenancy or 40% o this space ahead
o the opening.
Telitis data center, its rst such acility,
will oer more than just the co-location
services that are provided by most other
data centers in Malaysia. Based on
intensive market research on the demand
or data center services, the strategy
adopted by Teliti Datacentres was to
provide managed services. Inrastructure
as a Service, Sotware as a Service (SaaS),
Platorm as a Service, Storage as a Serviceand Network as a Service, among others.
According to Chie Executive Oicer o
Teliti Datacentres, Sdn Bhd, Encik Musa
Mohd. Lazim, We want to oer cloud
computing services with virtualization
capabilities, such as virtualized storage
and servers, and provide provisioning on
demand with thin provisioning technology.
In short, we want to encourage our
customers to outsource their data center
needs to Teliti as a Managed Service,
leaving them ree to ocus on their business
and to innovate to stay competitive.
Meet the needs odata center customers
The Teliti team required a storage solution
that enabled them to create a common
virtualised platorm or all data, structured
and unstructured, with the ability to manage
heterogeneous environments.
With these key requirements in mind,
Teliti invested in Hitachi Virtual Storage
Platorm (VSP), Hitachi Content Platorm
(HCP) and Hitachi NAS Platorm (HNAS),powered by BlueArc.
VSP, deployed with Cisco and VMware,
enables Teliti to provide Inrastructure as a
Service and related solutions to customers.
VSP provides signicant benets in
perormance, fexibility, power consumption
and total cost o ownership (TCO). In
comparison to nontiered and nonvirtualisedstorage platorms, VSP enables Teliti to

reduce disk drive costs by up to 70%
through the use o tiered storage, storage
reclamation and Hitachi Dynamic Tiering
sotware. Teliti may also realise up to 33%
reduction in TCO per terabyte in the rstyear o implementation. In addition, VSP can
achieve more than 30% reduction in power,
cooling and foor space costs.
With the Hitachi Content Platorm, Teliti is
also working with Hitachi Data Systems to
provide Archive and Backup as a Service,
This will be particularly benecial or small
and medium businesses (SMBs) that are
looking or cost-eective and reliable data
backup services.
The heterogeneous, nonproprietary solution
enabled the team to hook up to any platorm
directly and seamlessly; this was a eature
that only Hitachi Data Systems integrates
with ease with any operating system in
the data center.
With these capabilities, Teliti is able to
virtualise customers storage and servers
on demand based on their usage needs. In
addition, Hitachi Dynamic Provisioning, the
thin provisioning technology provided by
Hitachi Data Systems will eliminate waste
due to over allocation o data.
The ability to virtualise both storage and
server is a key priority or Teliti. With the
new solutions, the team can also virtualiseapplications. I a customer wants, or
example, 1PB o storage at the end o the
year or backup, we can provision their
storage by allowing them to move their data
to the cloud. This will be one o our service
oerings: a secure, private cloud, which
our customers can access on demand,
said Encik Musa. Teliti will use the Hitachi
Data Systems Inrastructure Cloud to
provide cloud services to customers in
the government, education and healthcare
segments in Malaysia and elsewhere.
With the Hitachi NAS Platorm, Teliti can
access and protect unstructured data, such
as email messages, which are critical to a
business, while reducing IT costs. Powerul
HNAS le sharing, le server consolidationand data protection eatures enable Teliti
to benet rom consolidation and le tiering
capabilities to minimize complexity in the
data center.
Based on my experience, Hitachi Data Systems
solutions are very reliable. They offer a broad range
of services from which both Teliti and our customers
will benefit.
