Executive Summary

The cloud computing landscape continues to rapidly grow in scope, scale and complexity. Unfortunately, as with so many trends in the IT industry, this rapid growh is accompanied by lack of definition and standardization, resulting in multiple definitions for "cloud computing". Utility computing, virtual compute environments, software as a service, platform as a service, infrastructure as a service, and on-demand are just a few of the variations of cloud computing. In addition, cloud computing has evolved to include storage, networking, software development, quality assurance, management and a variety of other topics and services.

As a result, the industry has begun to refer to cloud "computing" as cloud "services", which encompasses the multitude of definitions that have sprung up over the past year. This too is problematic in that it now includes almost any vendor that chooses to attach "cloud" to their product or service descriptions. Now, instead of the traditional few cloud providers we now have hundreds.

This industry analysis categorizes and evaluates, based on a fairly simple model, the most recognized cloud services providers. The purpsoe is to provide the reader with a tool to help analyze the different services sectors to gain a better understanding of which providers offer services or technologies in a given segment (e.g., infrastructure, platform, security, productivity applications, etc.).

While the list of service providers included in this industry analysis does not cover all providers, it is an attempt to identify those that we feel reprsent the broad cross section of the cloud services industry. We will continue to update this analysis from time to time to reflect new service providers and any changes in ratings of existing service providers.

Page 13: Cloud Services Vendor Analysis

Methodology

The Cloud Services Vendor Analysis is developed using research and investigation from several sources. The main source of information is the vendor's product information available on their website. This information is augmented with industry analyst reports, product reviews and personal experience. The resulting analysis is derived by summarizing these various information sources and applying a subjective rating to determine the rating/ranking for each categories.

Each vendor is rated on two categories: Role and Primary Product/Service Domain.

Role

Four categories are defined:

Service Provider - the vendor is actively engaged in the delivery of cloud services. I.E., they provide the service to a broad population of customers and consumers via an infrastructure capability and delivery model that they provide directly or via a third party.

Technology Provider - the vendor provides technology products and services that may be consumed by other vendors in the delivery of their cloud services. These products and services may be purchased directly from the vendor or may be licensed under one of several licensing structures.

Consultant - the vendor provides consulting services such as planning, design, analysis, sizing, reporting, transition management, or similar services to companies who are or plan to deliver cloud services.

Integrator - the vendor provides business and IT integration services such as application development, data migration, infrastructure design and installation, systems and network operations, performance management, or similar services to companies who are or plan to deliver cloud services.

A vendor may play one or all of the roles described - e.g., IBM, HP, EMC, Cisco, but the degree of capability will vary between vendors. The Role ratings are based on the vendor's capability with respect to "cloud" services, and does not take into account any other IT or business services they may offer. Where the vendor clearly targets a role (e.g., Cisco with respect to "Services Provider"), but does not have a direct delivery capability, then they will be ranked accordingly (i.e., A secondary component of the vendor's core business model, usually offered through a partner relationship ). As stated in the introduction to this section, the determination of whether a role is a primary or secondary component of a vendor's core business model is somewhat subjective based on their published strategy.

All vendors pursue different types of revenue opportunities, and while a vendor may not publicly indicate they play a particular role with respect to cloud services, they would more than likely offer services if the revenue opportunity presented itself. Every attempt has been made to rate vendors based on their state strategy, current capabilities, or history of participation in the role.

Primary Product/Service Domain

Eight categories are defined:

Infrastructure - "raw infrastructure" that may be utilized for any purpose the customer desires. Includes dedicated hosting, managed hosting, data center outsourcing, private clouds, etc. Commonly referred to as "Infrastructure as a Service" (IaaS).

Platform - infrastructure combined with a platform "stack" including hypervisors, operating systems, middleware and management tools that may be utilized by the customer to run their own business applications. Commonly referred to as "Platform as a Service" (PaaS). May also include specific-function platform models such as development, QA, and application/SaaS integration environments.

Storage and Backup/Recovery - data storage, management and integrity services. May be provided in the form of "raw storage", backup and recovery services, archiving (file, email, et al), file sharing services, etc. May also include content management and caching services (e.g., Akamai)

Security - network-based security services such as intrusion detection, intrusion prevention, malware and virus detection, remote scanning, etc.

Productivity Application - hosted applications that provide, on a subscription basis, a specific set of business functions (e.g., sales management, process management, collaboration services, document development and management, etc.). Offered in a multi-tenancy "Software as a Service" (SaaS) model.

BI/Analytics and Data Warehousing - business performance management and reporting including business intelligence reporting, supply chain management analysis, online analytical processing (OLAP), data integration, etc.

Planning - cloud service design, development, configuration, tracking, etc., provided as part of a consulting service or as a SaaS model.

Management - standalone cloud management tools that are offered outside of integrated management tools (e.g., tools offered as part of a PaaS stack). May be offered as a enterprise product or as a SaaS model. May relate to management of a specific domain (e.g., management of a productivity

Each domain is rated on the vendor's capability with respect to their offering in that domain. While the vendor may offer ancillary products or services, every attempt is made to rate the vendor on their core offering. Ratings are based on a vendor's relative performance to other vendors in the same domain.

Methodology V3.3 - April 2011 Copyright (c) 2010-2011 - SummaLogic LLC - All Rights Reserved Page 14 of 15

Page 15: Cloud Services Vendor Analysis

Methodology - continued

Relative Strength

The overall rating for a vendor is based on their capability to deliver products and services with respect to vendors in the same general domain(s). Some vendors play a wide variety of roles and offer products and services in several domains (e.g., IBM). Vendors who play fewer roles and/or may offer products and services in only a single domain are rated based on their ability to compete specifically on that role, product or service. Thus, a small vendor with a single product or service may rate higher than a global enterprise in terms of relative strength. Therefore the entire spectrum of roles, products and services should be considered when evaluating a company.

Relative performance is based on several factors including product feature/functionality, market awareness, market penetration, delivery capability, etc. However, the "potential" of a company to be "disruptive" in a particular product or service domain is also taken into consideration and may result in a higher ranking, even when compared to an established company.

While several factors are considered when determining relative performance, the ultimate rating is subjectively assigned. Company performance factors such as revenue, profits, shareholder returns, EBITDA, etc. are not considered in this analysis.
