LEADER DEVOTIONALI’m sure we all have seasons of our lives when God feels far off and His work through us seems

stalled. Regardless of how we feel, though, God is always near. He is a living God, and His work in us is not yet finished. He is not just the God of Abraham or the disciples, but He is our present “Abba, Father.” Galatians 4:6 says, “Because you are sons, God sends the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, ‘Abba, Father.’”

Today, if you are a believer, His Spirit indwells you. Through His Spirit we have continual access to the Almighty King. That’s true at church, but also at the grocery store, or at work, or any other ordinary place we find ourselves. 1 John 3:1 says, “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” It is because we are His children and because of that love that He continues to change our hearts.

1 John 3:9 says, “No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God.” I am thankful that as God’s child, He will not leave me alone! He spurs me on to be more and more like Him. He calls me out of mediocrity and into His purpose. He is still living and redeeming our hearts today. Listen and receive His truth. He is your “Abba, Father,” and He loves you!

7 Steps to Becoming a Master of Memorization

Alright, I’m going to be honest here. I’ve never heard anyone say that memorization is their favorite thing in the world, but great communicators love delivering great messages and part of delivering a great message is committing it to memory. Think for just a moment about the best speeches or sermons you’ve ever heard. I’ll bet it wasn’t being read to you from a script. One of the reasons it was so good is because the pastor or speaker had it committed to memory which allowed them to focus on delivering it in a powerfully impacting way. There’s no way around it, memorization requires some work, but the payoff is huge and there are some things you can do to make it easier. Here’s a quick guide to get you started:

Read the whole lesson first. Before you commit anything to memory, you have to know the big picture. It’s kind of like using plans to build a bird house. Before you make your first cut or start hammering on things, it helps to know what it’s supposed to look like when you’re finished.

Mark up the lesson. Pens and highlighters are your best friends! Underline and highlight key phrases, transition sentences, difficult lines, and anything else you think is worthy. This will create visual handles that your brain can grab onto in the lesson.

Chunk it. Your brain has trouble remembering vast amounts of unbroken information, so break the lesson down into smaller chunks. When you memorize, just focus on one chunk at a time and then put them all together at the end. The GO! curriculum helps with this by labeling many of the different chunks for you.

Read and recite. Starting with the first chunk, read the first sentence or two. Then put the lesson down and recite it back from memory. Continue doing this until you reach the end of the chunk. Then return to the top and recite the whole chunk in its entirety.

Focus on the transitions. Often, the most difficult parts to remember are the transitions from one chunk to the next. Be doubly familiar with your transitions.

Write out trouble spots. If there’s a line or section that keeps giving you trouble, write it out. This involves a separate part of your brain and can help with retention.

Recite the lines out loud. It may seem awkward at first, but speaking the lines is tremendously helpful. Practice teaching the lesson out loud in front of an imaginary audience. It’s even better if you can do it in the actual space where the lesson is being taught.

UNIT DESCRIPTIONLet’s be honest—kids are all kinds of bonkers! They love acting a little crazy from time to time, and now they get to do it at church too (in moderation, of course). During “That’s Bonkers,” kids will get to play an off-the-wall game that lets them go a little bit bonkers while discovering the last part of the Big Bible Story. More than that, kids will hear how God is bonkers-in-love with us and wants us to share His love with the world through the good news of Jesus.

SET-UP INSTRUCTIONS Place the “Bonkers Button” on a small table (or something similar) where kids can press it. When the “Bonkers Button” is hit, it should appear to set the video spinner in motion. Practice

advancing the media ahead of time so that it looks like the button set it in motion. Optional: If you would like to use a non-technical method for revealing the acting styles, print out

the “Bonkers Cards” (see Resource Folder) and place them in the order they’ll be used. Reveal them at the appointed time.

Set up a marker board or paper pad with marker in the teaching area to keep track of scores. Choose which celebration options you would like to perform. If you choose to have food as a part

of your celebration, consider how best to serve the food. Be sure to provide additional necessities such as napkins, plates, utensils, etc. Please be aware of food allergies and post appropriate warning signs for parents and children.

Choose which of the Reflect and Respond Stations you would like to make available. Set out the appropriate materials for each of those stations.

THAT’S BONKERS INTROLarge Group Leader: Hello everybody and welcome to our very last week of “That’s Bonkers”! Can you believe it? Not only is this the last week that we get to act a little bit nutty, it’s the very last week of our Big Bible Story. Do you know what I’m talking about when I say the “Big Bible Story?” (Take answers.) Great answer! (Hold up Bible and fan through it.) The Bible is made up of a whole bunch of different stories. But when you put all of those stories together in the right order, they combine to tell the best story ever—the story of how God rescued His people from sin. That’s what we call the “Big Bible Story.”

And here’s the best part—today we get to play an off-the-wall, super crazy game called “That’s Bonkers” to help us remember the Big Bible Story from beginning to end. Before we get started, though, we have to decide who’s going to go first.

Divide kids into 2, 3, or 4 teams (depending on the number of kids in your room). Choose one kid from each team for a “Bonkers” dance-off. Music: Play “Bonkers” music jam. Play the “Bonkers” music jam for each kid one at a time and have them do their most bonkers dance moves. Choose a winner and let their team play first. (Alternative: have the entire team compete in the dance-off instead of just one kid.)

For each turn, choose a kid to hit the “Bonkers Button.” (If you have new or visiting kids, you may want to choose them to hit the button.) When the button is hit, advance your media to the “Video Spinner” cue. When the spinner stops, it will reveal an acting style. After the acting style is revealed, advance the media to the multiple-choice question. The team will have to give their answer using the given style. Advance the media one more time to reveal the correct answer. Award each correct answer with 1000 points. If the video spinner stops on the “Bonkers” space, all of the kids in the room have to perform the pre-determined “Bonkers Action.” Ask the kids ahead of time what they want the “Bonkers Action” to be. The spinning team must then sit down and will receive no points for that turn.

BIG BIBLE STORY QUESTIONSAt the end of the Bible story have the kids turn briefly to their small groups and discuss the following questions: For Younger Kids: What is your favorite part of the Big Bible Story? What do you think it means to be a child of God? For Older Kids: What do you think the Big Bible Story teaches us about God? What do you think it means to be a child of God? After a few minutes, draw their attention back to the teaching area.

A LOVE SO BIGI’m seriously impressed! You kids aced that review quiz! (Hold up Bible.) Isn’t it so cool how all of the stories in the Bible fit together to tell one Big Bible Story about God’s love for us?

CG: Creation. In the beginning, God created people to be His children and to have a perfect relationship with Him. CG: Adam and Eve. But then something terrible happened—sin separated us from God. Did God give up on us, though? (Kids respond.) No way! CG: Abraham. Instead, He made a special promise to a special family—a promise that one day a Savior would be born through them. CG: Baby Jesus. Thousands of years later that promise came true and Jesus, the Savior of the world, was born. CG: Jesus on the cross. When Jesus died on the cross and then rose from the dead, He defeated sin forever. And now, when we believe in Jesus and accept Him as our Savior, our sins are removed and we once again have the right to be called children of God. In fact, that’s exactly what our Bible verse for today tells us. Let’s look at it together.

Call on a kid to hit the “Bonkers Button.” When hit, advance your media to the “Video Spinner” cue to reveal an acting style. After the acting style is revealed, advance the media to the Bible verse. Read the verse together using the style indicated.

VDO_13: Play Video Spinner: Quiet Ninja style: CG: “Some people did accept him and did believe in his name. He gave them the right

to become children of God.” John 1:12

When we become followers of Jesus, God calls us His own children. And even though the Bible is finished being written, the story of God’s love continues in the lives of His children. In fact, we’re going to practice sharing the story of God’s love in our life right now.

THE STORY CONTINUESSeat the kids in a large circle on the floor. This will help the kids share their stories with one other instead of just sharing them with you. When ready, ask the kids to take turns sharing the following two things: 1) Have you ever prayed to become a follower of Jesus? Tell us about it. And 2) How has God shown His love in your life? Consider sharing your answer to those questions too. When finished, ask if any kids still want to ask questions about Jesus before deciding to follow Him. Let the kids continue sharing one at a time for as long as it holds their interest or for as long as time allows.

I love hearing those stories! God is doing such incredible things in your lives and we have a lot to celebrate! In fact, that’s exactly what we should do—let’s celebrate!

CELEBRATION OPTIONSChoose from any or all of the following celebration options:

UPBEAT PRAISE SONG: Play one of your ministry’s favorite upbeat praise songs and have the kids sing along.

DANCE PARTY: Play an upbeat praise song or a popular contemporary Christian song and encourage the kids to have a dance party.

FAVORITE FOODS: Provide kids with some of their favorite snack foods to eat. Celebration foods like cupcakes could be perfect. Take into consideration food allergies. Alternatively, you might incorporate the snack foods into the story sharing time from earlier or into small group time at the end. As a reward, you might consider letting the winning team from the review competition get their food first.

Close the Large Group time by praying for the kids in whatever way the Holy Spirit prompts you. Following the prayer, explain to the kids which of the Reflect and Respond Stations will be available. Remind them to move about the stations very quietly. Tell them they are free to respond to God in whatever way the Holy Spirit leads them, but if they need suggestions, some of the stations will give them ideas for how to pray, write, or draw. Give each child one “GO! Home” sheet and instruct them to take it with them to the stations. Place small group leaders at the different stations to quietly help the kids. The stations listed below are just the ones that have prompts that are specific to today’s lesson. For more instructions on how the Reflect and Respond Stations work as well as a full list of possible stations, see the “GO! Guide.”

Music: (Optional) Play quiet instrumental music

Prayer Station prompt: Write a prayer thanking God for showing His love in your life.

Journal Station prompt: Image that a person from the Bible came to visit you for a day. Who would you want to have visit? What would you do with them for the day? Write about it.

Bible Station prompt: Read it for yourself: 1 John 3:1. Tell God how it makes you feel to be called His child.

Art Station prompt: Draw a picture of your favorite story from the Bible.
