    Cloud Computing: Hot

    Air or Killer App?

Cloud computing is the deliveryof computing as a service rather

than a product , whereby shared

    resources, software, and

    information are provided to

    computers and other devices as

a utility (like the electricity grid) over

    a network (typically the Internet).

    It implies the supply of

    applications to end users, rather

    than just computer cy-cles.

    Cloud-based computing is a type

of IT service usually delivered over

    the Internet, but the defining

    characteristic is scale the

    ability to service millions ofusers,

Grid computing is a termreferring to the combination of

    computer resources from multiple

    administrative domains to reach a

    common goal.

    Grid computing implies the

    provision of computing resources

as a utility that can be turned onor off as required. Computing on

tap, so to speak. You pay for what

    you consume, without worrying

about how where it comes from or

    how much is available.

Whether cloud computing is a new promising

    technology or just a hype.

Cloud computing is a technology previously present

in the form of application service provider (ASP)

model that was in vogue briefly 10-12 years ago.

ASPs, were supposed to manage data centres and usetheir expertise to run and maintain all sorts of

applications for customers, who accessed these

applications down the wire. New applications were

written or existing applications were ASP-enabled,

and these were either shared by multiple customers or

hosted on a separate server for each customer.

    ASPs and The Cloud

These ASPs could not manage millions of

customers and the only difference was the

    scale.

At that point of time firms did not want there

    confidential documents and spread sheets

    stored off site.

They believed in using office like apps on

    there own machines.

    Continued.

The ASP had all the vendors as startups

however today the cloud has all the big

companies associated with it which makes it a

    hype altogether.

Why would somebody use the cloud and

    not the personal applications ?

The model promises a much simpler way of accessing

applications, with a very short provisioning time, a

predictable per-user, per-month fee, and lower overall

costs due to economies of scale and the harnessing ofexpertise provided by specialists.

    More economy of scale.

Old knee-jerk worries about security and allowing

third parties to run applications are less prevalent

    these days.

    Or

To quote it we can say in words of Yossarian

from Joseph Hellers classic novel Catch-22,

if everyone else is getting their apps from the

cloud, youd certainly be a damned fool to get

    yours any other way ...

    The Cloud: Saving Grace

    or Empty Thunder?

Companies are looking on to the cloud for relief ingroundswell of economic pressures.

cloud computing can cut costs, speed

implementations, and scale quickly. It significantly lowers up-front capital expenses and

allows companies to only pay for what they actuallyuse. Plus, the cloud model dramatically lowers

operating expenses over time by increasingstandardization and automation and deliveringapplications and services more efficiently.

Cloud and the worries at top level

The big thrill of the cloud is not having to care

who, where, or how something is being done

Unfortunately, that thrill does not extend to the

CIO, whose job it is to ensure that its done

    properly.

Fear over security and loss of control of data

    and systems is hindering adoption.

    What finally?

At the end of the day, the decision to move to

the cloud, stay firmly on the ground, or move

to hybrids somewhere in between, will be

made based on a companys specific needs.

For now, its just another set of tools to use or

    not.

    Secure cloud?

A scary thought? For many CIOs, yes. They arepanicking about this.

Data security in the cloud is no different than data

security at a remote data centre. The big cloud playersAmazon, Google, Sun

Microsystems, Salesforce.comknow more than alittle about maintaining online security and,

considered in that context, worries about outsidersknocking down the security walls and having theirway with your data indeed seem over-wrought.

  • 7/30/2019 Cloud Computing Isha

    17/20

    The security with the log-on

log-ons are too primitive. The worry here is

that when barebones log-ons are in use, old-

    fashioned social engineering techniques will

let hackers learn employee log-ons and, watch

out, data leakage will be at flood stage.

  • 7/30/2019 Cloud Computing Isha

    18/20

    Answer to the log-ons

the solution is simple: enterprises should only

permit data to migrate to the cloud where two-

factor, strong authentication is in use and, right

there, hackers probably are kept at bay.

    How durable is the cloud?

The big worry, particularly in todays unstableeconomy, is how durable is the cloud provider.

Its not all or nothing. It does not have to be.

Put only the data you are comfortable with onthe cloud. That is what most companies seemto be doing. We are still in an era ofexperimentation. Take it in little steps butstart taking some steps, thats the smart way toembrace the cloud.
