What is Cloud Computing?

• The national survey was conducted in August 2012 by Wakefield Research

• Survey question – ‘What is Cloud Computing?’ was asked to 1,000 American adults.

• Survey result showed that 51% of the Americans are confused by the term “cloud”.

What is Cloud Computing Cont’d

• It is a Internet-based computing with shared resources, software, and information are provided to computers and other devices on demand.

Page 4: Cloud Computing

• Users simply rent or access the software

• Paying only for what they use.

‘Cloud’

• “Cloud” is simply a metaphor for the Internet.

• People don’t care what is in the ‘cloud’ but they depend on reliably sending data (rain) to and receiving data from it.

Page 7: Cloud Computing

Key Characteristics

• Data stored on the cloud (Internet)• Software and services available on

the cloud • Broad network access.

Page 8: Cloud Computing

Cloud Computing Models

• Cloud Software as a Service (SaaS): The vendor supplies the hardware infrastructure, the software product and interacts with the user through a front-end portal. Services can be anything from Web-based email to inventory control and database processing.– Example: Google Docs, Gmail, etc

Page 9: Cloud Computing

Cloud Computing Models

• Cloud Platform as a Service (PaaS): A set of software and product development tools hosted on the provider’s infrastructure. Developers create applications on the provider’s platform over the Internet.– Example: Windows Azure

Page 10: Cloud Computing

Cloud Computing Models• Cloud Infrastructure as Service(IaaS):

Delivers computer infrastructure as a service. Rather than purchasing servers, software, data center space or network equipment.

Cloud Computing Models

• Cloud Hardware as a Service(HaaS): • Hardware as a Service (Haas), in a grid-

computing context, is a pay-as-you-go model for accessing a provider's infrastructure and CPU power.

• Example: Amazon’s Elastic Compute Cloud

4 Types of Clouds

• Public Cloud: The services are delivered to the client via the Internet from a third party service provider.

Page 13: Cloud Computing

4 Types of Clouds• Private Cloud: These

services are managed and provided within the organization. There are less restriction on network bandwidth, fewer security exposures and other legal requirements compared to the public Cloud.

4 Types of Clouds

– Organization having similar requirement. – Concerns related to privacy, security and

policy compliance

Hybrid Cloud: Multiple internal and external providers

5 Layers of Cloud Computing

Page 17: Cloud Computing

• Client: A cloud client consists of computer hardware and computer software which relies on the cloud for application delivery.

• Application: Runs over Internet, no need to install and maintain, complete customizable applications

• Platform: A cloud platform such as platform as a service, the delivery of a computing platform and for solution stack as a service, facilitates deployment of application.

Page 18: Cloud Computing

• Infrastructure: Network of servers, Cloud infrastructure such as infrastructure as a service is the delivery of computer infrastructure typically a platform virtualization environment as a service.

• Server: Consists of computer hardware and software products that are specifically designed for the delivery of cloud services.

Microsoft

• Azure:– Internet-scale cloud computing and

services platform hosted in Microsoft data Centers.

– Provides a range of functionality to build applications that span from consumer web to enterprise scenarios.

The Future of Cloud Computing

• For now, companies don’t fully trust Cloud Computing and only uses it for small projects.

• Details such as licensing, privacy, security, compliance and network monitoring need to be finalized for the trust to be realized.

• A single hard drive for the rest of a person’s life, accessible anywhere with internet.
