by John Michael Kennedy
Keep your "To do" list out of your prayers - By pray-
ing over our upcoming tasks, our mind can often shift focus
onto tasks themselves rather than focusing upon God. Be-
sides, doesn't God already know our "to do" list for the day?
Have a "focusing word" - We can often follow a
thought trail in prayer for minutes on end, and once we come
to the end of the thought trail we wonder how we got so far
off track (then we waste more time back
-tracking to satisfy our curiosity!). Pick
a focusing word like "grace" or "love" or
"focus" and say the word to yourself
when you feel your mind wandering.
When (not if) you catch your mind wan-
dering, do not feel guilty, do not attempt
to revisit the thought chain to see how you got there, do not
give up your prayer session in despair. Say your focusing
word and return to your prayer. Random thoughts and distractions will run through
your mind. Let them pass on through and quietly return to your prayer.

Make prayer a habit, but not a program - Time in God's presence
loses its joy when we try to make a prayer schedule (take this as a sug-
gestion, not a law from Moses). I see this happen in exercise too - peo-
ple say, "I'm going to run every day at this time," then the day comes
where they miss a run - they throw up their hands and say, "Well, I've
already botched it up! Might as well take the week off," and they never
run again for a month. Don't do this with God! Keep a schedule if you
like, but also keep prayer spontaneous.
Keep your prayers scripture-based - Ever lose your focus be-
cause you don't know what to pray? Pray the Psalms! Pray Jesus' prayer
in John 17! Pray the Lord's Prayer! Pick a prayer, or prayer-like verse
in scripture and spend all your time on it. You may find that your pray-
ers/thoughts on scripture distract you from work instead of your work
distracting you from prayer - imagine that!
Keep your prayers short - Sometimes it's the 3-word prayer that
God loves. Frustrated with somebody/
something? Take 5 seconds to move your-
self into the presence of God and pray
something like, "Lord, help me." Pray that
short prayer with intense focus. Then re-
turn yourself to that situation and see what
God does. Walking from your car to the
office? Feel a breeze on your face and the
sun warming you?' Go into the presence of
God praying something like, "Lord, thank
you." Better 3 words of sincerity than
3,000 words of fluff.

PUMPKIN
A lady had recently been
baptized. One of her coworkers
asked her what it was like to be a
Christian. She was caught off
guard and didn't know how to an-
swer, but when she looked up, she
saw a jack-o'- lantern on the desk
and answered, "It's like being a
pumpkin." The co-worker asked
her to explain.
"Well, God picks you from the
patch and brings you in and wash-
es off all the dirt on the outside that
you got from lying on the ground in
the pumpkin patch. Then He cuts
off the top and takes all the yucky
stuff out from inside. He removes
all those seeds of doubt, hate,
greed, etc. Then He carves you a
new smiling face and puts His light
inside of you to shine for all to
see. It is our choice to either stay
outside and rot on the vine or come
inside and be something new and
bright."
