Closing Plenary

Why Are We Here? Complex context, macro-forces, uncertainty

Growing interest in foresight activities, a compass for setting strategic direction

Facing up to the Brave New World

Aims: a blend of Evolution of systemic thought through discourse and networking Specific ideas for action

Conference themes reflect a personal (CETIS) POV – Intuition that these are important Interest and expertise to do something about them

Day 1

University API

Course C = University.Course[“BasketWeaving”];

if (! C.IsFull){

SpamGenerator.AdvertiseToWorld(C, false);

}else{

A weak signal is

‘‘a factor of change hardly perceptible at present, but which will constitute a strong trend in the future’’ – M. Godet

Issues: Difficult to discover, filtered by existing mental models The weak signal approach is unfamiliar

Conclusions We need to become more familiar with strategy-oriented tools

OER Technical Roundtable - Actions!!

OER RSS profile. Analysis of how people actually search for educational

resources. Learn how successful commercial systems create resource

descriptions. Encourage open sharing of analytics usage data e.g. Google

analytics accounts for programmes. Identify minimum tracking requirements and recommendations

for future programmes. Mini-projects on esoteric approaches to tracking.

We have also produced a huge brain dump of technical issues which we will synthesise and present to JISC!

Evidence of OER use, re-use, re-mix use: downloads, views production: how many? when? patterns?

metrics: [publicity and advocacy value],

Use of OERs; Downloading What statisitics can we capture that helpinfluence senior managers statistics to support user advocacy tracking granularity return visits google analytics

Tracking: can we track use? is it possible? isit worthwhile? will we get useful data? metadata implications: what? why? how? SWORD deposit

Deposit

Search across multiple repositories/federated search Resource search interface Discovery of repositories Gatekeeping: do OER systems have anybarriers to access?

Usability of repositories (deposit, discovery, and use) where do the large files sit and where arethey held? local, cloud, repository?, Bulk download

Bandwidth management

Streaming of objects equipping those creating OERs Podcasting: workflow processes forsustainability and scalability

Design process and tools for OERs supporting reuse by careful encoding Intrallect report on encoding

Embedding CC licences in object License encoding in atom/ rss

Licensing and rights encoding metadata profile: Jorum tech development

Metadata and Jorum

Is the complex metadata actually helpingusers find resources? Do we have evidence of use of metadata inresource discovery? metadata portability and interoperability improved visibility cross platform?

Engaging Senior Managers

It’s complicated! How can we help VC’s with their big questions? – understand

these and show how technology can help Strategies need to be agile in a fast changing context Debate – should strategies be all-encompassing or piecemeal? EA is a roadmap – a vehicle – ‘if you don’t want to go anywhere

you don’t need a vehicle, and if you don’t know where you’re going a vehicle won’t help’ (from EA project)

Tasks - Leadership foundation should address the IT question for senior

managers Provide help for putting business cases together – benefits are

not always obvious – eg student retention Recommend that bid writing has to involve senior management –

it’s important institutional bids are owned by university not by JISC – is a key success factor

Align technology supported learning strategies tightly with university strategy

Concerns of lecturers, senior managers, support and IT staff are very different – need to align their concerns

Should JISC be funding institutions to become more innovative?

WhereAreWe?

We need to move from “potential” to arguable case

JISC (and its ISCs) should make their data more available

Investigate the potential to harness student/staff agency Does Linked Data offer a platform for agile consumer-generated svcs?

Chrysler used linked data internally – lessons to learn?

Investigate potential for institutional reputation, profile…

Reconstructing the Competence Maze

Successfully pioneered a “floor-based” conceptual mapping technique

Technique good at revealing the considerable complexity of the area – the process is useful in understanding that complexity

Technique is very promising and could be reused in other JISC and CETIS contexts and domains

Participants experienced good engagement and the sense of development of their concepts in this area

This area of conceptual models of competence is something that should be pursued – we have provided a means to do this

Further discussion and development will proceed through the CETIS competences team and SIG shared with the CEN WS-LT

Automatic Metadata Generation

Future Work? Automatic Metadata Generation

Metadata janitor: normalise and return Clear guidance, illustrations, and best practice Aggregating activity and usage data Link to XCRI

Linked Data Sharing and standardising ontologies JISC programme to release linked data followed by developer days How to guides and encouragement Intermediary with Google etc for use of institutional data

SEO Combined stats for OER projects A social media profile for UKOER content Wikipedia entry with Spanish/Chinese/ Russian translations. Netskills course focused on SEO and Social Networks for OERs Branding: UKOER logo?

The Problem with Modelling or Modelling Problems

My model of a person(sub-class male):

Shoe size Inside Leg Waist Chest Collar Hat

We want to make sense of our world Mainstreaming modeling A step-by-step introduction to modeling Share our models (innovation base) Gather our resources

Tools slideware

Almost Finally… Following the aphorism “the only constant is change”…

My prediction for the future: We will see more interest in the future And more interest in systematic “foresight” methods

But maybe we should also look for the timeless constants and at the lessons of history

Semi-finally

Thanks to JISC

for having the continued

wisdom to support

events like this

And Finally

Please welcome
