SERMON What Does It Mean to Be a Matthew 25 Church? Rev. Hailey Braden Lynch

Part IV: Building Congregational Vitality

OUR GRATEFUL RESPONSE

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH The Apostles’ Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

During this +me when we’ve been apart, significant work has been done on our building to maintain and refresh the spaces in which we gather for worship and ministry. In order to remember and honor the people behind many of the elements of our building, the Communica+ons and Building and Grounds CommiBees will be working together to tell the stories of some of our prominent and much-loved items.

The Story of the Foyer Cross

The beau+ful backlit cross in our foyer was created in memory of Lowell Prouty, husband of long-+me Fair Oaks member Bea Prouty. Some Fair Oaks members will remember “Grandma Bea” as one of the table parents in the early years of our LOGOS program. Nancy Van Der Griend can s+ll see her wearing her blouse inside out and backwards for “Backwards Day”—shoulder pads cupped up and bouncing as she walked. She delighted the children, and they adored her—hugs all around.

The cross was made by Jennifer Walstra’s brother, Dave Predl, of Predl Woodworks in Dolton, IL. Dave worked with Fred Burghardt on the project.

MINISTRY OF PRAYER. In addition to praying for the Joys and Concerns listed on this page, the Deacons and church staff highlight three members/families to be lifted up in prayer each week. This week we pray for Lee Ann and Floyd Anderson and family, Terry and Ron Anderson, and Cindy Mears and Andres Bacalao and family.

PRAYER CARE. There are a few ways to make a prayer request or communicate another pastoral concern to the church staff and the Deacons. You may scan this QR code with your cellphone camera to send your request/concern to the church office. Prayer Care Cards are also available on a table in the narthex. You may fill out a card and leave it in the collection basket or in the church office, and you may also call the office (708.386.4920) with a request/concern. Names remain on the Prayer Care List

for six weeks.

ANNOUNCEMENTS WELCOME! We are thrilled to be back in our beautiful sanctuary and are so glad that you have chosen to join us today, in-person or online! We hope you feel right at home. If you are a visitor and have questions, just ask either of our co-pastors or any of the dozens of folks around you that call Fair Oaks their church home. We’re all eager to meet you!

IN-PERSON WORSHIP. Join us for our next in-person worship service on Sunday, August 22, at 10:00 am. The service will also be live streamed in Fair Oaks’ Facebook Group, as it has been throughout the pandemic. We look forward to fully returning to in-person worship on Rally Day, September 12.

CHILDCARE FOR THIS MORNING’S WORSHIP SERVICE. Children are always welcome in worship at Fair Oaks! It is our practice to provide childcare during services and other events to give families with younger children and infants the option of having their children cared for during worship. Because our nursery staff is not in service during this unusual summer, we have made the “Loft Room” available for families with young children to participate in worship while tending to their children if they wish. Please see an usher to be directed to this room if you would like to take advantage of this option.

MISSION TRIP. During our service this morning, we will commission our Senior High Mission Trip Participants for their upcoming week of service in New Orleans. After worship, some of our veteran participants will gather on the church lawn and answer questions our first timers might have about what to expect, what to pack and how to prepare. The trip departs on Friday afternoon.

MISSION TRIP LETTERS. Please consider writing a note of encouragement to one or more of the 35 youth and adults traveling to New Orleans on July 23 to serve on Fair Oaks' annual mission trip. It is a long-standing tradition to send participants off with notes that they can read throughout the week. If interested, please contact Karen Bromley for a list of attendees and the deadline to submit notes. They may be dropped off in the marked basket in the narthex or through the mail slot at church.

BUILDING TOURS AVAILABLE! Fair Oaks has taken advantage of this time when the building has not been in use to take care of a significant amount of deferred maintenance on our building and to refresh many of the classrooms and office spaces. If you would like a tour of the building, contact Sophie Eldred or Ann Kreiter.

USHERS NEEDED. With a need for additional ushers for worship services, we are eager to expand our team. If you’re interested in serving as an usher, see the link in the eWeekly to sign up. If you have any questions, contact Kent Bromley.

CONVERSATIONS ON THE LAWN. Join us at Fair Oaks for a Conversation on the Lawn this evening, from 7-8:00 pm, as we continue to explore what it means to be a “Matthew 25 Church.”

PASTORS’ DROP BY HOURS. You can always schedule a time to talk with the pastors at any point, of course, but want to just drop by without having to make an appointment? Ben and Hailey

will be holding “office” hours on the front porch of the manse Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11:00 am-1:00 pm.

CLUSTER TUTORING. Fair Oaks is still exploring a collaboration with Cluster Tutoring to begin this fall. Cluster Tutoring has been looking for an additional site to host tutoring on Monday nights in the school year, and Fair Oaks has the space it would need. If you would like to get involved, email the office ([email protected]) with the subject line “Cluster Tutoring.”

VOTING OPEN FOR 2021-2022 FOPC BOOK GROUP. Help us select the next line-up! See the eWeekly announcement to check out suggested titles or to add your recommendations. Then tell us what five books you’d like to read this program year by adding your name and ranked choices to the spreadsheet (or you can email your votes to Meghan Strubel. We’ll gather on August 24 to kick-off our third year and tally the results. The book group meets monthly on the fourth Tuesday. All are welcome!

FAIR OAKS MARKET IS COMING . . . OCTOBER 16, 2021! Save the date! Mark your calendar! Share with friends! The event will help raise money for Sarah’s Inn and our own FOPC Senior High Mission Trip. See the eWeekly for details, and, if you have any questions, contact Nancy Van Der Griend, Linda Van Dyke or Barb Mayer.

REQUEST FOR CHURCH PICTURES. The Outreach and Engagement Committee seeks your photos of church life! Do you have pictures of events at the church, mission activities, social events or other aspects of our dynamic church community that you would be willing to have featured on our website? Email them to the office ([email protected]), and you might see your photos featured on our website in the future. (Please be mindful of privacy concerns and make sure any photos submitted are yours to share.) Thank you in advance for aiding this effort to make our website feel more personal and inclusive.

ONLINE DIRECTORY. The online directory on the church's website is being phased out this month, replaced by the online directory in Realm, the church's membership software program. If you haven't logged in to Realm yet, see the instructions in the Church App announcement in the eWeekly. Realm can also be accessed via a web browser.

ONLINE GIVING. If you would like to support Fair Oaks Presbyterian Church with an online contribution, scan this QR code with your cellphone camera. It will open the church’s online giving link in Realm.
