Close Start & Close Finish
Wednesday Wonders Summer Series 2019-20 Race 16 (5 Feb 2020)
With 23 of the 37 yachts starting within 10 seconds or less of their handicaps; and the fleet
finishing within 16 minutes 53 seconds of the winner, this race had both a close start and a
close finish. For the second week in succession conditions were great for sailing. Seas were
less than a metre, skies were blue and the breeze moved between the south south east and
south and increased as the race progressed to average about 13 knots for the afternoon. Thirty
six of the thirty seven starters completed the race by sailing around the 9.9 nautical mile course
14.
STAMPEDE (Christopher Gendala), ARABESQUE (Milton Green) and LEBROK (Theo Korbel)
tied for Start of the day with a time of 2 seconds. Leading the race from start to finish was the
Triton 24 DOLPHIN PLAY (John Brennan) to win her first race of the series. FOGGY DEW
(Frank Hilliard & Joe O’Grady) won their first glass of the summer by finishing 2nd followed
across the line by ROLLER COASTER (Geoffrey Simpson) to record her 2nd podium finish of
the series. In her first race of the series the MAT 1245 WHITE NOISE recorded the fastest
elapsed time when she sailed the course in 1:37:33.
For the second successive week the same 3 yachts remain at the top of the aggregate.
LUSCIOUS (Michael Butler) is the leader with 33 points followed by ESPRIT (Garry Anderson)
with 35 points then PEGASUS (Andy & David Lynch) with 38 points. FOGGY DEW enters the
aggregate top ten at number 8 for the first time this series and ROLLER COASTER is back
there in 10th place. Meanwhile both WHITE ONYX (Ben & Katherine Solly) and CASSANDRA of
MELBOURNE (Bob Reeves) slip out of the top ten into 11th and 16th place respectively.

WW Summer Series 2019-20Race 16 Wind Speed & Direction
DOLPHIN PLAY has completed 7 races this summer
and her handicap has been zero for 6 of them. She
received a 1 minute decrease to -1 for this race and
used it to full advantage. She was the first yacht to start
the race 12 minutes ahead of her closest rival. She led
the fleet around SYC 4 for the first time but her lead
was reduced to 5 minutes 20 seconds. DOLPHIN PLAY
sailed the last 3 legs of the course in 1 hour 17
seconds and was first across the finish line at 16:01:14
just 9 seconds ahead of her closest rival. She had
sailed the entire course in 2:32:14 and finished ahead
of WILLARIE (the other Triton 24) by 6 minutes 21
seconds and 14 places. DOLPHIN PLAY moves up
from 44th to 41st in the aggregate.
Since race 14 when she was 29th in the aggregate
FOGGY DEW has been improving her aggregate position
on a regular basis. She started this race from 5th place
only 6 seconds late for her 24 minute handicap. She
completed the first 3 legs of the course in 73 minutes 31
seconds and rounded SYC 4 in 3rd place. FOGGY DEW
completed the last 3 legs of the course in 53 minutes 46
seconds and crossed the finish line at 16:01:23 for her
first podium finish of the series. She has completed 11
races this summer and now has 4 top ten finishes which
have helped her up into 8th in the aggregate.
ROLLER COASTER has completed 10 races, recorded 4 top ten
finishes and has been “on the podium” on two occasions. She
was the 9th yacht to start the race 10 seconds late for her 33
minute handicap. She rounded SYC 4 in 5th place, 11 minutes 58
seconds behind the leader at the time. ROLLER COASTER
sailed the course in 1:58:31 – a time that was better than 5
yachts that had higher handicaps. She was 3rd across the finish
at 16:01:31 only 8 seconds behind FOGGY DEW. The first three
yachts had finished the race within 17 seconds of each other.
ROLLER COASTER hasn’t been in the aggregate top ten since
race 3 but this 3rd place has helped back there in 10th place.
The median start time for the race was 8 seconds.
The best median start for the series is 6 seconds in
race 4. On this occasion 36 yachts all started within
53 seconds of their handicaps with CARPE DIEM
starting 4 seconds too soon and receiving the 5
minute penalty.
This race followed the intent of the pursuit race with the fleet starting 63 minutes 36 seconds
apart with the gap reducing to 30 minutes 34 seconds at SYC 4 and then to 16 minutes 53
seconds at the finish line. The late starters found it difficult to go through the mid fleet with only
1 late starter among
the first 12 yachts to
finish. The closest
finish was for 12th
place with ALIBI
(Denis Hambleton)
crossing the finish
line 1 second ahead
of ALEX TEAM
MACADIE (Jock
Macadie).
