PERTURBATION PROBLEMS

When can we perturb approximate behaviour to exact behaviour?e.g. approximate projections are near to projections.i.e., if T P BpHq has }T ´ T ˚}, }T ´ T 2} small, then there exists aprojection P P BpHq with }T ´ P} small.Questions of this nature are ubiquitous in operator algebras.

In what sense can one speak of “perturbation” of a von Neu-mann algebra? We have not “moved” it by some process —“adding a term,” for instance. There is such a a process avail-able, however. If a von Neumann algebra is transformed by aunitary operator close to the identity operator, the result is a“slight perturbation” of the original algebra.

We believe that this is the only possible method of perturbingan operator algebra–that suitably close operator algebras areunitarily equivalent.

KADISON’S SIMILARITY PROBLEM (55)

Operator algebra version of unitarisability problem for grouprepresentations.

QUESTION

Let A be a C˚-algebra. When is it the case that a boundedhomomorphism θ : A Ñ BpHq is similar to a ˚-homomorphism?

Yes, if θpAq has a cyclic vector (Haagerup).Yes for properly infinite von Neumann algebras, and hence stableC˚-algebras.Yes for II1 factors with property Γ.Profound reformulations (Kirchberg, Pisier,. . . )

1 Suppose A Ăδ B where B is nuclear and A has similarity property.Must A ãÑ B?

§ Christensen: M Ăδ N , with M having similarity property and Ninjective gives embedding M ãÑ N .

§ Partial result: Yes for B a type I C˚-algebra.2 Can one produce close isomorphic copies of a II1 factor M

(perhaps L8pX , µq ¸ Fn) on H, for which no isomorphism can beclose to the inclusion into BpHq?

§ We know that for any free ergodic pmp action Fn ñ pX , µq, thecrossed product M “ L8pX , µq ¸ Fn is perturbation rigid: i.e.,isomorphic to any von Neumann algebra it is close to.

§ Fk chosen as the bounded group cohomology H2pFk ,L8pX , µqq isnon-trivial.

3 If A and B are close and A is Z-stable, must B be Z-stable?§ Close II1 factors are simultaneously McDuff.§ Moreover McDuffness perturbs: if M McDuff, and N close to M

can make a small unitary perturbation so that M “M0 bR andN “ N0 bR with the same copy of R and M0 and N0 close.

4 If M and N are close II1 factors, what can we say about theirsubfactors?

§ Cartan decompositions, tensor product decompositions, transfer toclose subalgebras.

5 Suppose C Ă A and D Ă B are inclusions of nuclear C˚-algebraswith dpA,Bq and dpC,Dq small. Is there an isomorphismθ : A Ñ B with θpCq “ D?

§ This works for injective von Neumann algebras: applyChristensen’s theorem twice.

§ It also works if C (and hence D) is an ideal.§ But in general the Elliott intertwining arguments needed to construct

isomorphisms between C˚-algebras don’t work well with inclusions.
