Anniversaries and Legacies

Throughout 2015 we have reflected upon and celebrated the first 25 years of Cornerstone College, and as has also been mentioned, it coincided with Australia commemorating the 100th anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli.

This year, the Year 12 Drama students brought to us an outstanding recollection, from a local perspective, of some of the tales, myths, legends and legacies of and from 1915. There are many tales and legacies that find their birth in those first ANZACs.

One new initiative within the College that coincided with the 25th Anniversary was the introduction of Year 12s undertaking a Legacy Project.

The Year 12s, were challenged to reflect upon all they have received in their time at Cornerstone, and to consider what they could give back to the College or the wider community during their final year of schooling, as their legacy.

Nine projects evolved and were lived out by the Year 12 students, who then also shared with the rest of the College the learning and value they gained and received through these projects.

These projects involved: • Designing and planning a significant piece of public artwork that reflected the

spiritual soul of our College. • Working with younger students at St Mark’s Lutheran School and peer-tutoring. • Assisting in the coaching and administration of sport teams.• Organising and running a community event (Colourfest) to raise funds for

Backpacks 4 SA Kids.• Providing musical performances for local elderly residents. • Showing concern for the environment by developing a butterfly garden. • Building and installing signage for Purtinga and seating at Morella Oval. • Blessing the college with a dramatic Passion Meditation presentation before

Easter.

I think these are a wonderful examples and out-workings of how the Class of 2015 have loved, learnt and grown in their time at Cornerstone. These projects are quite symbolic of their understanding of, and their contribution to, Cornerstone and beyond over the last 5 years.

Each year, the year 12 students have a unique opportunity as a group to ‘leave their mark’, and to express what Cornerstone means to them and the influence it has had on the shaping of them as learners and people. The focus of the ongoing legacy they contribute to should always be:• Understanding and recognising our history and traditions.• Sustaining and enhancing our core values and culture.• Being entrepreneurial to ensure we remain a relevant, vibrant and creative

College, strongly connected to our students and families.

As I reflect on the journey of the Class of 2015, I am ever optimistic and certain that I will continue to observe and experience sustained and deep threads of quality, care, respect and service in the learning, leading and relationships from the Class of 2016 and beyond.

“If you can’t do great things, do little things with great love. If you can’t do them with great love, do them with a little love. If you can’t do them with a little love, do them anyway. Love grows when people serve”. – Mother Teresa

Celebrating 25 YearsThis year is the 25th Anniversary of Cornerstone College and we celebrated this milestone in style at the Stirling Hotel on Saturday 8 August. Current and past staff, old scholars and parents joined in the evening where many stories were shared about times gone-by at Cornerstone.

Our Founding Principal, Mr Mal Wegener was unable to attend, so he sent a fun and informative letter that was read by the College’s second Principal, Mr John Proeve. Mal reminded us that Christ has always been our firm foundation and continues to be today with his words, “The growth of the College in size, resources and reputation in the past 25 years has been truly remarkable, and as you celebrate the 25th anniversary, it's certainly time to thank God for His guidance and blessing along the way.”

The College’s third and current Principal, Mr Craig Fielke, thanked the guests, and acknowledged the courage and conviction of the founding staff, parents and students. The guests were entertained by two very talented bands, Love Birds and HiiTIDE, made up of old scholars and a current teacher.

We thank those who joined the celebration and reflection.

The Working Group that are respon-sible for

the management and administration of the educational land at Aston Hills have continued to meet regularly throughout 2015. They have been actively considering the feedback from the community forums and the information gleaned from the less formal meetings held with interested parties. The opportunities for the Aston Hills land have been divided into three categories; education, ministry and community use. All of these elements have advanced considerably throughout 2015, with the educational element reaching a stage where it could be summarised.

After several years of research, listening, analysing data, much dialogue, debate and prayerful consideration, the Working Group

have been able to consolidate their thoughts. They would however like their collective ideas to be challenged and tested from someone who has the skill and experience to undertake the task, but who is also independent from the Lutheran system. This added process will ensure that any future recommendation is non-biased and can be considered fairly by the community.

The LSA have engaged an independent education consultant who is well respected and will have the knowledge, experience and expertise to test the Working Group’s thoughts and ideas and prepare an independent view. The consultant is Mr Garry Le Duff, who has a long and distinguished career, with 41 years experience in education as a teacher, lecturer, project manager and senior manager. Garry was Chief Executive of the Association of

Independent Schools of SA for 18 years. The review will commence in the immediate future with the recommendations being delivered to the Working Group in April 2016. The LSA look forward to sharing these with the community once a position is determined.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank those within the community who have been willing to be a part of the process; and as work continues towards positioning and preparing Lutheran education and ministry for the future growth of the district, we would ask that you continue to partner with us in prayer.

ST MARK’S LuTHERANSemester Two HappeningsIn addition to a strong academic focus in classrooms, we like to provide a diverse range of opportunities for students to develop all aspects of their abilities and experience community life.

In this edition of clippings we share with you some of the recent happenings from our sister Lutheran Primary schools:

ST MICHAEL’S LuTHERANSt Michael’s welcomes new Principal for 2016 – Mrs Terri Taylor Terri has extensive experience working in Lutheran schools and is a passionate and experienced educational leader. She comes to St Michael’s from Unity College, Murray Bridge where she has held the position of Head of Junior School for the last 4 years. Prior to this, she served as Head of Junior School at Living Waters Lutheran College, Warnbro and also has taught in Lutheran schools in Alice Springs and Darwin.

Terri is committed to providing Christian education and is looking forward to building and developing strong relationships with staff, students and families.

SPRING HEAD LuTHERAN2015 finished with a flurry of activity at Spring Head. Our students were involved in a very busy schedule of musical activities, with Spring Head on Tour visiting Restvale Homes, the Lobethal Senior Citizens Centre and a number of local kindergartens. In addition we had our instrumental music concert, and students involved in Rockleigh carols, the Living Nativity in Lobethal and Carols on the Mount in Mount Torrens.

We ran a gymnastics program through Sporting Schools, as well as an orienteering program which taught our students a range of new skills. In addition our Bike-a-thon was held at the Amy Gillett bikeway in Mount Torrens, raising over $1700.

There was excitement at our school with the arrival of Thomas, the NAO humanoid robot, visiting our school as part of a project with the Association of Independent Schools (SA) and St Michael’s in Hahndorf. Thomas will be returning next year after some technical difficulties which saw him return to Paris for repairs. We were also fortunate enough to be able to purchase some Sphero robots, which our students had a wonderful time programming.

LOBETHAL LuTHERANDuring the second half of 2015 our school has been very busy.• Our whole school concert “Showcase at

Sea” was a terrific effort by the students. We thank the staff for their efforts as well.

• The Year 6/7s enjoyed their bi-annual trip to Canberra – what a great experience.

• At the end of 2015 we farewelled Craig Lieschke after 16 years as Principal of the school, and we welcome Mick Emmett and his family as our Principal from 2016.

Our school business, the Old School Grain Store, continued to grow, with students producing chicken feed at school and working at our stall at the Mount Pleasant Farmers Market. The store made over $1200 profit in three terms, with our students electing to purchase new sports equipment and send our graduating class on an excursion to Bounce.

We said farewell to our graduating class with a fantastic graduation dinner, provided by a very committed group of volunteers from the Friends of Spring Head (FOSH) group. Our final farewell came at the end of year service in a packed school hall. We are looking forward to a break and an exciting 2016.

Habitat for HumanitySA Lutheran Schools Mission 2015From 29 June - 12 July the four of us were privileged to be part of a team of 41 from Lutheran schools in South Australia lending our muscle to help build houses for six deserving families as part of a Habitat for Humanity project just outside Phnom Penh in Cambodia. It was great to work alongside the families as part of the building process. We worked together to cart bricks, gravel and sand, lay bricks and mix and pour concrete. By the end of our time we’d built the foundations, including filling the interior area with sand, dug holes at least 1.8 metres deep for the septic system, installed the septic tanks, built the walls of both the toilet block and half of the main house for the houses of these six families, and completed the foundations on the other two.

Through interacting with people on the trip, we not only became close to the other students, youth leaders and teachers, but we got the opportunity to get to know local children, the Habitat interpreters and employees and, most importantly the Cambodian families we were building the houses for. Over the week family members shared their stories with us. Many of the receiving families have members who are HIV affected and therefore have suffered from past discrimination. This project enables them to be a part of what is now a supportive community.

During our time we were able to see a few of the houses and meet some of the families that have already moved into their homes built by Habitat These families now have a permanent home that is close to a free school, close to markets, and close to new job opportunities. They expressed to us their happiness in now being part of a growing and safe community and shared with us how much having a home has changed their lives and provided hope for their future.

Our week of building culminated in a hand-over ceremony in which families shared their thoughts, stories and hopes for the future with us. The families made small gifts of thanks and presented these to us, and we showered them with sweet smelling flowers as an act of blessing and a symbol of good fortune.

Mary summed up the experience beautifully:“I loved interacting with the people we worked with in Cambodia. I’ve learnt a lot from the trip and the people receiving the houses are so grateful for the support. It’s important that we do what we can do to support people in Cambodia who are currently living in poverty and facing social discrimination.”

Indigenous Immersion DayDuring the last week of Term 3, the Year 7 cohort had the privilege of experiencing the very first Indigenous Immersion Day at Cornerstone College. They took part in a series of activities based around what they had been studying during the preceding three weeks. The activities were designed to enable students to gain a rich and meaningful understanding of Aboriginal culture, cementing their learning for future years.

The three experiences ranged from learning about how Aboriginal people utilised the natural environment, learning about and participating in creating a joint Aboriginal art piece with Ms Smart and Ms Kennedy and finally a performance by ‘Brutha n I’ where students were challenged about their conceptions of Aboriginal people.

The students also enjoyed a kangaroo sausage and damper roll for lunch, kindly prepared by Mr Pearce and Ms Filmer.

Australian Lutheran World ServiceEarlier in Term 4, the Year 7s spent a day looking at poverty and other issues in places like Sudan and Cambodia. They also looked at what Australian Lutheran World Service is doing to aid and alleviate these problems. As a cohort, we realised that we could actually make a difference and so decided to hold a fundraising drive in the last few weeks of the term which allowed us to purchase items from the ALWS Gifts of Grace catalogue. The Year 7s chose from items such as water filters, long-drop loos, fishing kits, garden kits, pig farms, chickens and school supplies. Jesus said, ‘Whenever you did it for the least of these people, you did it for me’.

It was a hot spring day for our annual Cornerstone Golf Classic this year, but that didn’t deter our participants from giving it their best. There were some very clever and classy shots played, and some shots that… well... didn’t quite make the hole! More importantly a lot of fun and connection happened between our golfers and the teams. We thoroughly enjoy this day where our College partners and friends come together to enjoy a hit of golf, some food, drinks and fresh air.

Our sincere thanks to those who supported the day. The funds raised will go towards much needed projects around the College.

Food & Fun FestWe were blessed with a warm Spring evening for our annual Food & Fun Fest on Friday, 30 October. This assured the large and enthusiastic crowd could enjoy the numerous activities, food and entertainment. Whether it was sharing in some Indian curry, yiros or a hamburger; being entertained by our talented music students or participating in bubble soccer; there was something for everyone.

A night like this could not happen without the significant support of our school community and local businesses. We are very grateful to the PT&F Committee and parents, staff and students who volunteered their time, donated items or came along to join the night. The money raised from this event will go towards Middle School seating and shading.

Thank you BreakfastOn Thursday 27 August the Year 11 Food and Hospitality students prepared a delicious breakfast which was served as a thank you to the businesses who provide invaluable support to the College. Many local businesses take our students for Workplace Learning which allows them to gain invaluable experience in a workplace setting. We enjoyed sharing a specially prepared breakfast while listening to guest speaker, Mel Dee Dzelde from PowerFM share her entertaining life story.

Careers ExpoCornerstone College was the proud host of the Hills Careers Expo which is open to students and parents from the entire hills community.

The Expo provided an opportunity to better understand the transition from school to career, with over 50 exhibitors all under the same roof. Universities, TAFE and SATAC provided information sessions, and attendees could also learn about apprenticeships, traineeships and vocational training. Hundreds of people from across the hills community visited the Expo and left better informed about their post-school choices.

Middle School

Heritage DayOn Thursday 27 August the Year 7 Middle School students invited a relative to come and spend some time with them and research their family history. It was a special time and the lower level of Paideia hummed with the sound of conversations and laughter. Often we don’t spend enough time talking about our heritage with those relatives who formed the foundation of who we are today and this was a moment when this could happen. Here are some things we found out about our Year 7 students and their history:Lucas is related to the Barbary Pirates in the Barbary coasts near the top of Africa and Swizzy Taylor a gangster in Melbourne.

Matthew’s great, great grandfather was Chief Constable of London.

Josh is related to a police man who was in charge of the capture of Ned Kelly.

Lily’s Dad represented his country in water polo, rugby, cycling and badminton in South Africa.

Liv’s last name Harvey dates back to 13th century in France. Her Granddad was an English boxing champion at 17 years of age.

Maddi’s grandpa’s middle name, Byford, was passed on from each father - after a Canadian fighter pilot from WW1.

Olivia said, “Heritage Day enabled us to listen to great stories from other people. We all learned interesting, and sometimes naughty stories about the past. The stories seemed real although some were hard to believe. It was great to be able to talk to friends and relatives without being interrupted”.

Special thanks to the many relatives who came, the people who worked behind the scenes to make the day run so smoothly and the Year 7 Middle School Core teachers who facilitated the day.

Year 7 Tree DedicationOn Friday, 23 October the Year 7s gathered on Paedeia Green for a short dedication service. A small gum tree has been planted in recognition of the current 2015 Year 7s and is symbolic of their

learning and growing that they will do during their time at the College.

The College Leaders led this service and encouraged the students to make the most of their opportunities here at Cornerstone

and to grow into the young people God has called them to be.

Year 9 Journey CampYear 9 camp is so much more than just a camp or an opportunity to be away from school with friends. Year 9 camp is an opportunity to learn to understand yourself at a deeper level. It is an opportunity to become aware of your physical, emotional, social and spiritual capabilities and limitations. It is an opportunity to be challenged, tested and to grow.

Once again in 2015, all the Year 9s experienced the highs and lows of an amazing week away from home and school. The weather while cold and slightly damp didn’t discourage a challenging range of activities including caving, boating, gymnastics, night orienteering, karaoke, knee boarding, sailing, rowing, paddling, movies, skiing and of course lots of eating, talking and fun!

Arts AliveAtelier was once again alive with Middle School Music, Art and Drama on Tuesday, 17 November. This was superbly supported by the Senior School Art and Design exhibition. The Year 9 Music students were a standout, performing in their own bands a song that they had composed, arranged and rehearsed themselves. All the performances and exhibits were a wonderful showcase of the vibrant semester we’ve had over here in Atelier. Well done staff and students.

Year 10 Primary Schools VisitOn Wednesday 17 June, the Year 10 Music class swapped the traditional classroom for a tour bus and hundreds of screaming primary school children.

As a class, we wanted to share our music with the community, so the decision was made to visit St Mark’s (Mount Barker) and St Michael’s (Hahndorf), for a 60 minute performance to all of the primary students.

The Year 10s directed the whole event, from bumping the performance space in and out for each concert, to performing. It was fantastic to watch our confident singers act as MCs for the day.

Our program included several full band charts, a special performance from our eight singers and solos from James May, Sarah Dickinson, Emily Fenwick and Sam Schultz.

Mr Anthony Janus and Ms Sophie ZernerMusic Teachers

Music TourDuring the October school holidays, the Music Department set off for a week for Music Tour 2015. 38 students and 7 staff travelled to Swan Hill and Mildura performing each day to primary and secondary schools, along with aged care facilities and public performance venues. Our four senior music ensembles were busy at every performance, along with our talented Year 12 soloists.

A fun filled week of music, night time activities and enough food to feed a small army; and how could we possibly forget our friend Mario at Orange World! So many magical memories that will stay with us for a long time.

Congratulations to everyone that took part in Music Tour this year.

‘Hot House’ Performs at ‘Relay for Life’On Saturday, 7 November, one of our Senior Music ensembles, Hot House, performed for the last time in 2015 at the Cancer Council "Relay for Life” event at Mt Barker Oval. The Band entertained the walkers and joggers for an hour, performing several well known tunes, including “Let Me Entertain You”, “What Kind of Man” by Florence and the Machine and “John Doe” by Drapht. Our lead vocalists, Bronte-Ellen Jones and Taylor Nobes also performed a solo item at the event which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Congratulations to all the members of Hot House on a wonderful year and for helping to support this important event on the weekend.

Ski / Snowboard AchievementsYear 10 student Alfie Wenk has been competing at National Level in skiing since he was in Grade 1. Despite only training two weeks a year compared to up to six months that many of his opponents train he has recorded a number of top ten finishes in various National Level events and even a fifth place in SkierCross. He won the SA Interschools championship for Giant Slalom in his division as well as again being the overall secondary schools winner.

In addition he teamed with Alex Palmer, also in Year 10, to win the teams’ snowboard event in their division. Alex won the individual gold and Alfie the silver. Alex and Alfie were the two fastest male snowboarders on course.

Year 7 student George Wenk was asked to be the forerunner for the SA Interschools Secondary Schools Giant Slalom race and recorded by far the fastest time of anyone but Alfie. He won the SA Interschools championship for Giant Slalom in his division as well as being the overall primary schools’ winner. Across the CurriculumFood Skills CourseOver the first three weeks of Term 3, the Food Skills classes worked on knife skills and cutting techniques to enhance food presentation.

A range of basic cuts were practiced and some would claim perfected! Students had the opportunity to research and then practice a more creative skill of their own choice. Some great results were achieved.

Maths in Year 7Maths in Year 7 isn’t just about textbooks and worksheets - it's about games that reinforce concepts, it's about interactivity and group work and it's about open-ended questions and investigations. Mr Liebelt's Maths group recently utilised board games which reinforced a large number of processes relating to fractions.

The use of the whiteboard tables aided students with these processes and helped them to articulate their thinking. Too much fun in maths? Never!

Year 12 German Raclette EveningIn Week 4 Term 3 the Year 12 German class stayed back after school to enjoy a German movie and a meal cooked with the traditional Swiss German 'Raclette'. Much fun was had enjoying these elements of German culture and, above all, speaking German to each other.

Poetry in Action‘Poetry In Action was a great experience. I found it to be both very educational and humorous. I learnt about a wide variety of poetic techniques and appreciated different forms.’ Jameson Davis - Year 10

Once again, our College enlisted the touring company known as Poetry In Action to help our students appreciate the form, function, power and beauty of poetry in our world. On Friday of Week 4, our Year 8 students explored our Australian culture and history, from pre-European to the migrant experience of today, in ‘Home Grown Poems’. The Year 10 cohort thoroughly enjoyed the entertaining show entitled United Nations of Poetry and our Year 11 classes experienced perspectives about hope, suffering and resilience in a presentation entitled, Words of War.

We have a sequence of poetry content in our English curriculum. Accordingly, we work to enhance our students’ knowledge, appreciation and analysis of poetry as they progress into the senior years. Poetry In Action is one way in which we strive to move beyond purely the written word and theoretical study. The experience of poetry in performance and shared as a community helps us to advance the receptive capacities and critical thinking skills of our students.

Across the CurriculumMiddle School ChineseAt the end of Term Two, middle school students studying Chinese did a research project on the sites that the Cornerstone China trip group will visit as part of their tour to our sister school next year. Students made models or tourist brochures on the attraction they researched.

They came up with some very creative models, using materials such as, foam, lego, wood, cardboard and cake, etc. Students really enjoyed the opportunity to express their creativity in a way that linked in with their Chinese language and cultural studies. Our Chinese Haidian exchange students from China thoroughly enjoyed seeing models representing landmarks in their home country!

At the end of 2014 when we were met with our very large and very talented class list for 2015’s Year 12 Drama, Karen Sierp and I immediately decided that we wanted to do a serious, dramatic piece rather than a comedy. The actors and technical students were all very dedicated, extremely gifted and eager to undertake a piece that would challenge them, creatively and emotionally. Being the 100 year centenary of the landing at Gallipoli we thought it the perfect opportunity to celebrate our local identity and look at the stories of our ancestors

and neighbours in the Adelaide Hills. 1915 was born.

We had wonderful and appreciative audiences at all of the performances. Along with the families of the cast and crew, special guests, supporters of Drama, teachers and old scholars who work in theatre, we also had the Mayor and many representatives from RSLs; many tears were shed.

Science WeekNational Science Week is an annual celebration of science in Australia, an opportunity to enjoy and explore the wonders and benefits of science. The theme for this year’s National Science Week was “Making Waves - The Science of Light”. Cornerstone celebrated Science Week in style during Week 5 of Term 3 with a variety of lunch-time activities.

On the Wednesday Miss Sickerdick and Mr Rohde had demonstrations and activities for students that involved liquid glow sticks, fiery fairy dust and fireballs. On the Thursday Mr Egan enabled students to be involved in activities using light boxes and lasers and to finish off the week, the Year 11 Physics classes tested out their go karts by trying to get them to go at “light speed” on Morella Oval. In addition to the activities, there was the annual Science Quiz as Home Groups battled it out for the Golden Bunsen.

From the Archives - Ski Trip 1995

We arose early Sunday morning, and in the car on the way to school the realisation hit us that we were finally on the way to the snow. After many videos we finally arrived at the Coach House Inn, Bright. The first day on the slopes, many people found themselves face down in the snow on regular occasions. After a while some students decided that taking our skis off and making it to the bottom on our backsides was more enjoyable! By the end of the week many of the beginners found themselves going down runs they would never have dreamed of tackling on their first day. The ski trip was the most memorable for all who attended and thanks must go to all the staff who meticulously parented us the week.

Old Scholar NewsClass of 2014 - 1 Year ReunionOn Saturday, 28 November around 60 old scholars from the Class of 2014 returned to ‘cibo bello’ on a beautiful evening to catch up. There was plenty of chatting and laughter as they shared their stories with staff and each other. We all enjoyed a fun night and it was fabulous to hear how these ex-students were

enjoying their work, training and lives since leaving the College. Thanks to all those who attended, it was great to see you again.

Shoe Boxes of LoveShoe Boxes of Love Inc was an initiative started in January 2011, by Old Scholar Kimberly Marshall (2003), as a response to the floods that devastated Queensland. Since then, Shoe Boxes of Love has become a valuable resource in disaster relief efforts, providing support to communities recovering from bushfires, floods and cyclones across Australia. During Semester 2 this year, our Year 10 Christian Living class were learning about social justice and were encouraged to put their learning into action which culminated in their shoe boxes of love. Kimberley came and collected the Year 10 shoe boxes and let us know these shoes boxes were going to the Pinery bushfire victims.
