Clinical Information Systems

OB TraceVueSurveillance, alerting, storage,

and charting for obstetrical care

* A Harvard

Medical School

affiliated hospital.

OB TraceVue is a patient-focused obstetrical informationsystem that provides a complete clinical record of care forthe mother and newborn. The surveillance functionspresent information that is transmitted from fetal andfetal/maternal monitors and generate alerts for criticalevents. Philips worked with the Department ofObstetrics and the Laboratory of Computer Science ofthe Massachusetts General Hospital*, incorporating theirknowledge, expertise, and years of experience into thedevelopment of OB TraceVue.

OB TraceVue can be accessed wherever patientinformation is needed – from patient bedside anddelivery room, central station, nurse lounge, andphysician’s home or office. Easy access to well-organized information improves efficiency, allowingyou to focus more attention on patients and achieve thebest quality of care.

OB TraceVue is addressing legal liability by storingpatient information including traces on magneto-opticalmedia. Optical storage media can store data for up to 30years according to the accelerated lifetime tests of themedia manufacturer.

Clinical benefits of OB TraceVue

• Offers superior surveillance, providing continuoustrace displays of fetus and mother even with triplets.

• Provides basic and advanced fetal trace alerting, makingyou immediately aware of critical events.

• Ensures prompt distribution of, and access to, patientdata through the electronic patient record for mother, fetus and newborn.

• Interfacing to the Hospital ADT System, helping toimprove efficiency and reduces errors when admittingpatients.

• Integrates into the hospital MS Domain infrastructureincluding user authentication via Microsoft ActiveDirectory services.

• Interfaces to hospital-wide third party chartingsolutions to allow for automatic data transfer.

• Displays OB TraceVue alerts even when other clinicalapplications are in use.

• Saves time and effort with an intuitive user interface• Receives fetal traces transmitted from remote locations

using Avalon FM20, Avalon FM30, and FM-2antepartum fetal monitors.

• Enables interactive remote access to closely monitorpatient status when you’re away from the unit. OBTraceVue is WEB enabled.

Surveillance, on-line documentation, alerting, and storage –all in one obstetrical solution

Philips OB TraceVue offers patientsurveillance, alerting, documentation, and archiving functionality designedto ensure comprehensive coverageacross the obstetrical care continuum– from the first antepartum visit todelivery, postpartum, newborn record, discharge and postpartum follow-upvisits. Maternal care can be trackedacross multiple pregnancies toprovide a comprehensive obstetricalrecord.

Modular design for flexibility andefficiency

OB TraceVue is a highly scalable system. It can beconfigured as simple non-stress test (NST) system, ascentralized departmental surveillance solution and asa complete departmental point-of -care surveillanceand charting solution that allows fetal, maternal, andnewborn charting at every bedside.

Interfacing to the Hospital ADT System

OB TraceVue’s HL7-based ADT link allowsdemographic data to be downloaded from the HISand can report transfers and discharges to the HIS.

Integration into the Hospital ITInfrastructure

OB TraceVue can be fully integrated into the hospitalMS Domain infrastructure including userauthentication via Microsoft Active Directory services

Interfacing to Hospital-wide Third PartyCharting solutions

OB TraceVue interfaces to hospital-wide third partycharting solutions by exporting a configurable set of

flowsheet data including vital signs, derived fetalheart rate parameters, alerts and notes. The export isbased on HL7 outbound communication.

Remarkable access

An authorized care provider can gain read/writeaccess to OB TraceVue from any PC on the hospitalLAN (OB department or physician’s office) orremotely via secure connection from home.

Runs alongside other applications

OB TraceVue runs alongside third-party applicationsand can be minimized to an icon while users workwith other applications. The icon, which is alwaysvisible, registers alert situations, and provides chartingreminders for time-sensitive tasks.

High-Availability

The OB TraceVue high-availability option is based ona hot standby server that takes over data collection, surveillance, alerting and charting in the case theprimary server becomes unavailable.

True depiction of the fetal trace

OB TraceVue provides continuous, accurate, and clear trace displays that exactly replicate thefetal monitor trace. Trace displays incorporate allrelevant data and notes, while the overviewscreen allows simultaneous monitoring of up to16 patients on a single display.

Remote trace transmission

In combination with an Avalon FM20, AvalonFM30, or FM-2 antepartum fetal monitor withmodem, OB TraceVue receives traces recorded atanother location.

Annotated tracingInterventions andtraces are insertedinto the trace timeline.

Seven waveforms canbe tracedsimultaneously, including fetal heartrate for triplets ortwins, maternal heartrate, fetal movement profile, contractions, and fetal SpO2.

Basic alerting

Basic alerting informs you when fetal tachycardiaand bradycardia limits have been exceeded, andannounces unusual fluctuation in the monitor’ssignal. OB TraceVue provides a signal loss alert andnotification when fetal trace paper has emptied. OBTraceVue incorporates cross-channel verification, aunique feature included in all Philips fetal monitors,to detect coincidences between fetal and maternalheart rates or between two fetal heart rates.

Advanced pattern analysis

After establishing a baseline fetal heart rate, detailedpattern analysis tracks any baseline changes, short-term variability, amplitude and frequency of long-

term variability, as well as the number and type ofdecelerations, accelerations, and contractions.Pattern analysis gives advanced alerting (antepartumand intrapartum) and support for antepartumtesting and automated charting.

Non-stress test support

The non-stress test is used for antepartum testing toassess fetal well-being. The test is started by turningon the fetal monitor and defining the reassurancecriteria in OB TraceVue. An NST report isgenerated when the reassurance criteria are met thefirst time in the current monitoring phase. Whenperforming an NST with multiples, a separate NSTreport is generated for each fetus.

Electronic patient charting for mother and fetus

Electronic charting ensures prompt distribution ofdata, resulting in faster access to complete patientrecords wherever and whenever needed. OBTraceVue documents from the first antepartum visitto delivery, postpartum and postpartum follow-upvisits. OB TraceVue also covers multiple pregnancies.

Comprehensive, integrated, and readily accessibleinformation not only improves care, but also aidsresearch, teaching, statistical evaluation, andadministrative reporting. It also contributes to thelongitudinal record on enterprise-wide systems, helping to support patient safety and to leveragecapital investments and data collection.
