THE PRESCRIPTION

A prescription is an order from a

1. Doctor (physician),

2. Dentist or

3. Veterinary surgeon (veterinarian)

for the supply of a:-

1. Medicine (drugs),

2. Dressing or

3. Surgical appliance (tools)

to the patient.

It contains the following information :

2- The patient's name and address

3- The patient age (years or months)

4- The superscription (Rx)

5- The inscription

7- The Transcription or Signature

This is a sign Rx/ which is aninstructions to the pharmacist. It isderived from Latin word recipemeaning " taking ".

It contains a list of ingredients

and their quantities. It is calledthe base

The medicaments may beprescribed as :

A- An Official

N.F; B.P.C; or B.P preparation,together with the quantityrequired.

B- Proprietary Product

Together with the quantity

required.

C- Special FormulaIn which, the quantity of eachingredient will be stated together

with a description of the type ofpreparation, e.g. mixture, lotion,tablet.

6- The Subscription:

It includes the instructionsto the pharmacist for:

1. Compounding of the severalingredients into a form

suitable for use by thepatients,

2. The class of preparation

[capsules, ointment,mixture, etc.].

3. Also the number of doses

to be prepared isindicated.

7- The Transcription or Signature

It includes the instructions to the

patient for the use of theprescription.

1-Simple prescription2- Compound or complex prescription

3-Narcotic prescription

In which the inscriptionconsists of one or two substancesas active ingredients.

2- Compound or complexprescription

In which the inscription maycontain four distinct portions,Known as:-

1. the basis,

2. the adjuvant,3. the corrective and

4. the vehicle.

Is the main activeingredient, and from it, the

patient will derive anyother ingredients

2- The adjuvant

Is that medicament

included to aid or assistthe basis, it enhances its

activity.

3-The corrective

Is that substance or those

substances added to qualifythe action of the basis andadjuvant.

Correctives are used tomake other drugs lessirritating or to serve asflavoring agents i.e. mask theodor and taste.

4-The vehicle

Is added to dilute the

active constituents to areasonable dose, so that thepatient can take the dose byhousehold measures.

The vehicle is usually devoid oftherapeutic activity and simply

act as a diluent.It may be:-

1. distilled water,2. aromatic water,

3. infusion or decoction.

It forms the medium which thesubstances are dissolved or

suspended.

Sometimes it may has an

auxiliary or subsidiary medical

action.Also, it may has a

preservative or sweeteningeffect e.g. chloroform water, or

It has a flavoring effect such

as peppermint water, anisewater etc.

3- Narcotic prescription

Is that, the prescription which

contains a narcotic substance

or contain other habit forming

drugs.

It must include, in addition to thecontents of the simple

prescription, the address of the patient,

the narcotic registration numberof the prescriber.

Such prescription should be:

1. written by ink or typewriter.

2. The quantities of the narcoticsubstance must be written inwords and numbers.

3. The prescription should bestored in a special file which

must be opened all times forinspection by the properauthorities.
