    THE PRESCRIPTION

    A prescription is an order from a

    1. Doctor (physician),

    2. Dentist or

    3. Veterinary surgeon (veterinarian)

    1. Medicine (drugs),

    2. Dressing or

    3. Surgical appliance (tools)

    to the patient.

    It contains a list of ingredients

    and their quantities. It is calledthe base

    The medicaments may beprescribed as :

    A- An Official

    N.F; B.P.C; or B.P preparation,together with the quantityrequired.

    Is that medicament

    included to aid or assistthe basis, it enhances its

    3-The corrective

    Is that substance or those

    substances added to qualifythe action of the basis andadjuvant.

    Correctives are used tomake other drugs lessirritating or to serve asflavoring agents i.e. mask theodor and taste.

    4-The vehicle

    Is added to dilute the

    active constituents to areasonable dose, so that thepatient can take the dose byhousehold measures.

    The vehicle is usually devoid oftherapeutic activity and simply

    act as a diluent.It may be:-

    1. distilled water,2. aromatic water,

    3. infusion or decoction.

    It forms the medium which thesubstances are dissolved or

    suspended.

    Sometimes it may has an

    auxiliary or subsidiary medical

    action.Also, it may has a

    preservative or sweeteningeffect e.g. chloroform water, or

    It has a flavoring effect such

    3- Narcotic prescription

    Is that, the prescription which

    contains a narcotic substance

    or contain other habit forming

    drugs.

    It must include, in addition to thecontents of the simple

    prescription, the address of the patient,

    the narcotic registration numberof the prescriber.

    2. The quantities of the narcoticsubstance must be written inwords and numbers.

    3. The prescription should bestored in a special file which
