Climate Technology Network in a snapshot – As of 1 March 2017

Introduction

The Network’s mission is to provide a platform for civil society, financiers and the private sector to actively

partner with governments; identify barriers to technology transfer; exchange technology experiences; and

provide technical assistance and capacity building to developing countries at a global scale in a timely

manner. This ability is not solely provided by the mere size and wide range of capacities of the Network,

but also by its capabilities to deliver the expertise that is demanded by those seeking assistance from the

CTCN. Due to the nature of the mission of the CTCN, it is essential to equip the Network with necessary

technical and regional expertise even though the demand is not clearly defined.

The CTCN will monitor the needs and capacity of the Network on a continual basis. In this regard, direct

contact has been made with more than 350 relevant institutions inviting them to join the CTN. Responses

have been positive as interest to join the CTCN has been expressed by a number of stakeholders and the

Climate Technology Network continues to grow at a steady pace.

Since the 8th Advisory Board meeting, the CTCN has received an additional 79 Network membership

applications. As shown in Figure 1, the number of applications has grown steadily over the past 3 years and

it is anticipated that this trend will continue with the active promotion of the Network by the CTCN. Based

on the country of registration of Network members, Table 1 shows the geographic distribution of members

by UNFCCC country designation, further categorized by geographic regions. International organizations

refer to those established under multinational agreements or equivalent with or without official

registration in a single country. Table 2 shows the distribution of the network members by geographical

scope of activities. Most of the organizations are experienced in more than one sub region and the table

presents the number of organizations out of the total Network membership having experience in the main

region and/or one or several sub regions. There are currently more Non-Annex 1 NDEs than Annex 1 NDEs,

50 percentage and 46 percentage respectively (Figure 2). Details of each member, including the country of

registration, are listed in Annex I.

Network membership criteria

The criteria set by the Advisory Board are applied by the Network and Capacity Building Manager and form

the basis of a recommendation for approval of the Director. The criteria are continuously monitored and

have remained the same since the 6th Advisory Board.

Network membership criteria remain appropriate and the CTCN is not proposing any changes to the criteria

at this time.

Members by type of institution

Figure 3 shows the network composition by type of institution. The figure shows that the private sector

represents the largest institution type at 35% of total network memberships. Academic and research

organizations fully constitute almost one quarter of total network memberships and stand ready to assist

the CTCN with RD&D related activities.

Members by expertise

This section outlines the capacity of the Network to perform its functions. The organizations’ expertise has

been assessed based on the information provided in the CTN application form. Most of the organizations

are experienced in more than one mitigation and/or adaptation sectors, regions or service types and the

bar charts present the number of organizations out of the total Network membership having experience in

each sector, region, and service type.

a. Mitigation vs adaptation

The total number of Network members having expertise in climate change mitigation, adaptation and

cross-cutting activities is 229, 161, and 120, respectively (Figure 4). Currently, the Network has more

coverage in climate change mitigation and less in climate change adaptation. “Cross-cutting” expertise

refers to “Ecosystems and biodiversity”, “Gender”, “Disaster risk reduction” and “Community based

activities”.

b. Sector coverage

Figure 5 shows the sectoral coverage of Network members for mitigation expertise. While expertise in

energy dominates, it is observed that the technologies and applications in the energy sector are diverse.

Figure 6 shows the total sectoral coverage of Network members for adaptation expertise.

Agriculture/forestry and water sectors dominate.

c. Service capacities

Figure 7 shows the service capacities of the Network. While the Network has a relatively good coverage of

capacity building, knowledge sharing and policy and planning and technology development and transfer, it

was observed that expertise in collaboration in innovation and investments can be improved.

website

Since the 8th Advisory Board meeting, the CTCN has implemented an online Network membership

application assessment process. Having the Network membership assessment process online allows for

faster assessment of applications, automatic creation of Network membership profiles on the CTCN

website and online visual reports on the status of the Network. Facets to filter Network members’ expertise

within specific sectors and regions have been developed together with a function to export Excel

spreadsheets of the filtered Network member lists. Network members’ engagement data and “Current

opportunities open for network members” table have been added to the website. These are a couple of

examples of the many improvements that have been implemented to active the CTCN website regarding its

Network section.

CTC Network engagement

Since the 8th Advisory Board meeting, the CTCN has approached the Network members with:

invitations to the Annual Regional NDE Forum for the NDEs from Latin America and the Caribbean;

invitations to the Annual Regional NDE Forum for the and for the NDEs from Anglophone Africa;

invitations to the CTCN RD&D workshop;

letters of network member opportunities;

webinar invitations;

monthly newsletters; and

email notifications about bidding opportunities for open Technical Assistance bids.

The entire Network membership has been contacted to ask for contribution of resources and documents to

the CTCN's library of technologies with clear instructions on how to share the material with the CTCN.

Network members have already started sharing resources and documents which have been added to the

Knowledge Management System and linked to their Network membership profiles. Additionally, Network

members have organized webinars that have been hosted by the CTCN.
