IntroductionWe are delighted to return to Kimmage Development Studies Centre again this year for our Annual Hedge School. Last year’s event was memorable with the usual mix of stimulating talks, engaging workshops, hedge planting, good music and good food.
This year one of our keynote speakers will be Abjata Khalid who, in response to the letter of invitation, wrote: “I will share with your participants a version of ‘hedge schools’ in northern Kenya where a camel laden with books and teaching aids and a mobile teacher moves with nomadic families and oers education to nomadic children. This unique form of education was started to assist nomadic children get education after many years of marginalization from successive regimes in Kenya and also during British rule.”
Unfortunately, the situation from which Abjata comes is critical as more than ten million people are experiencing the worst famine in the Horn of Africa in over fty years. In this context, we are very pleased to have Abjata, who works with pastoralists – some of the most seriously aected people - to give his insight and analysis of the eects and causes of this catastrophe.
We know that failed rains are one element but the underlying causes remain the impact of climate change, poverty and social injustice. The devastating impact of climate change, particularly on the most vulnerable people in the world can no longer be ignored.
The roots of the problem of climate change, of course, lie in the Northern Hemisphere and leading climate scientist John Sweeney will look at the issue closer to home and alert us to the opportunities in the coming months to address this problem. For example, this December UN climate delegates will meet in Durban, South Africa for a new round of talks. Despite an appalling record to date, it is hoped that now, with ten million lives hanging in the balance, their resolve to reach a deal will match the extreme urgency of the situation.
These and related issues will be explored through a series of lively workshops with African music interwoven throughout the day - not to mention time to touch the soil and plant a tree.
We look forward to seeing you there.
