Autumn 2014

What can I do in the Supported Learning Centre? Word-process course work or use the

wide range of computer software

available to present your projects by

using graphics packages, printing and

scanning facilities. Computers must

not be used for business purposes

and users should follow City Lit’s e-

safety guidelines. Computer use may

be monitored.

Access our range of online electronic

resources via City Lit Moodle

(moodle.citylit.ac.uk), such as

dictionaries and encyclopaedias.

Borrow from a wide choice of materials

including books, music scores, music

CDs, DVDs and talking books.

Make use of a range of journals and

newspapers chosen to keep you up to

date with your studies.

What subjects does the lending library cover?Library resources are chosen to reflect

the courses taught at City Lit and to help

you in your studies. Subjects include:

art, computing, drama, counselling,

deafness, education, health & movement,

history, languages, literature, music,

philosophy, psychology and sociology.

How do I join the Supported Learning Centre?

You can join the Supported Learning

Centre once you enrol on any course

at City Lit. Joining is easy! Just show

us a current enrolment receipt and fill

out a short form. You will receive a

membership card valid for the whole

academic year.

Make sure you bring your

membership card with you every time

you come to the Supported Learning

Centre.

How many items can I borrow? You can borrow up to 9 library items

at a time (including 2 DVDs).

DVDs and other short loan items can

be borrowed for up to 1 week at a

time. All other loans are for up to 4

weeks at a time.

Library loans can be renewed if not

reserved by another user. Items not

shown at the library desk for renewal can

only be renewed twice.

Are fines charged for all items returned / renewed late?

A fine of 20p per day for books/CDs and

50p per day for DVDs is charged on all

late items.

Can I renew online or by telephone/text message?Yes. The web address, email and

telephone number are on the back of this

guide and on your library card. Overdue

items cannot be renewed online.

What support can I expect when using computers in the Supported Learning Centre?It is intended that you work independently

on computers at your own pace, without

support. Our staff will be pleased to help

you to access the facilities, provide you

with help sheets or refer you to specific

taught computer courses in the

Prospectus if you would like to know

more.

Memory sticks, print/copy cards and

blank CDs/DVDs are available for sale at

the library desk.

Disabled accessThe Supported Learning Centre is fully

accessible via the lifts from the ground

floor. There are height-adjustable desks

for users wishing to study or use a

computer. There is a range of adaptive

keyboards and mice available for users

with restricted hand and/or arm

movement. One computer is available

with text enlargement and text-to-speech

and another with speech-to-text software.

There is a document magnification unit

available for visually impaired users and

induction loop facilities for hearing aid

users.

Information leafletsInformation about study skills and

dyslexia support, careers advice,

counselling for students and student

bursary/financial support is available in

leaflets on display at the Supported

Learning Centre.
