The Business of Survemance For every way in which electronic technology improves our
lives, more sinister applications undermine privacy and threaten
human rights, specifically privacy and First Amendment
protected activities. The more we grow to accept that all
kinds of information will be transmitted about us in everyday life,
the more we accede to the potential abuses of this information.
By Heidi Boghosian
Protecting Children's Privacy Online: The Battle Continues The quest for protection of children's privacy online has been
a lengthy one, from the first calls for fedeml regulation in the
I 990s, through the implementation of landmark legislation
in 2000, to the new rules going into effect in 2013. But the
data collection practices of marketers continue to evolve, and
adolescents thirteen and over remain unprotected.
By Kathryn C. Montgomery
Protecting Privacy: The Role of the Courts and Congress The right to privacy is a work in progress. Even if courts and
legislatures often look to the other to do the hard work, this
article argues that both branches have a significant role to
play. As new technologies, new business practices, and
new government programs challenge well-established con
cepts of privacy, neither jurists nor lawmakers can afford to
sit on the sidelines.
By Marc Rotenberg and David Brody
Warrantless Wiretapping Under the FISA Amendments Act The Foreign intelligence Surveillance Act Amendments Act
was reauthorized without a single substantive amendment,
despite valiant efforts by a small group of committed law
makers to draw public attention to the law's serious privacy
implications and to attain gr-eater public accountability with
how the law operates.

Employment Privacy: Is There Anything Left? While employers can monitor every e-mail, text message,
and Web site visit on a company-owned device, personal
conversations at work and video recording are legally
protected. Other topics explmed in this article include
audio monitoring, video surveillance, laptops, webcams,
GPS, biometrics, social network monitoring, and pass
wmd disclosure.
By Lewis Maltby
Upending Human Dignity and Shattering the Fourth Amendment: Strip Searches While strip searches span a broad spectrum of scenarios,
the common denominator remains humiliation and
degradation at the hands of government officials and a
complete disregard for privacy. If we are to make any
progress in restoring, let alone securing, our Fourth
Amendment rights, we must begin by ensuring that
human dignity stands alongside privacy as a primary ani
mating principle of the Fourth Amendment.
By John W. Whitehead
Privacy in Hollywood? There is a long history in Hollywood of dramatizing illicit
invasions of privacy. At its core, the best of this enter
tainment raises important questions about human
individualism, independence, and privacy.
By Alexander Wahl
Human Rights Hero: Senator Ronald Lee Wyden Senator Wyden-with support
from other senators--seems the
lone governmental sentinel
standing guard between the
American people and abuse of
government surveillance absent
vigilant oversight.
By Wilson Adam Schooley
