Theme Study

• Students will take part in a thematic unit based on Click Clack Moo Cows that Type. This unit will include information on cows as well as other aspect of the farm. This unit will integrate reading and writing with social studies, science, mathematics, art, music, and physical education.

• Students will gain a better understanding and appreciation of cows and farm life. Students will learn more about rural areas as well as the different types and uses for cows.

Language Arts: Reading Activities • Students will read various fiction and non-fiction

books as well as poetry about cows and the farm during silent reading, partner reading, guided reading, reading aloud, and reader’s theatre.

• Students will read aloud their letters to Farmer Brown.

• Students will read and research a type of cow for their research project.

• Students will read and evaluate sale advertisements of different foods to determine if they are good deals.

• Students will read their peers writings during peer revisions.

Language Arts: Writing Activities • Students will use the KWL board and will write their ideas

on post it notes and place their ideas on the board. • Students will participate in a fill in the blank activity using

the important words missing from the letters in Click Clack Moo.

• Students will write their own letter to Farmer Brown. • Students will write a narrative story using the theme of

animals writing notes to the farmer. • Students will participate in this writing activity: what would

it be like to live without electricity? • Students will create a poem using a farm animal theme. • The students will write a report on a type of cow of their

choice. • Students will write in their journals about various assigned

topics about the farm.

Language Arts: Speaking Activities

• Students will participate in a Student Theatre: Click Clack Moo.

• Students will participate in grand conversations about their opinion as well as the sequence of events in the book.

• Students will participate in a matching game with Synonyms and Compound words with the vocabulary words

• Students will present the animal poems they have created

Language Arts: Listening Activities

• Students will listen to the teacher reading Click Clack MOO. • Students will listen to the CD version of Click Clack Moo. • Students will listen to the teacher read Little Joe by Sandra

• Students will gain understand for the theme’s vocabulary by listening to the definitions.

• Students will listen respectfully to their peers as they share their stories ,poems, journal entries, and letters.

Language Arts: Viewing Activities

• Students will view images of the different types of cows, farms, and the environment cows live in.

• Students will visit a farm. • Students will view the Click Clack Moo story map. • Students will view the vocabulary word wall. • Students will view their peers art projects. • Students will view selected videos about cows. • Students will find and view theme vocabulary in a

Word Scramble, Word Find, and Crossword Puzzle.

Language Arts: Visually Representing Activities

• Students will visually represent their ideas on the KWL chart.

• Students will create a Venn Diagram to compare typewriters to computer keyboards.

• Students will add words to the word wall to represent new vocabulary they learn reading from the literature selection.

• Students will create an advertisement for the book of their choice from the literature selection.

• Students will visually represent their poems. • Students will draw a picture of their cow they reported

on.

Science Activities • Students will view a slideshow called “Wow that Cow!” and

will gain a better understanding of the types of cows, environments, life cycles, what cows eat, how farmers care for cows.

• What is Electricity? Students will discover what electricity is and will view a Bill Nye the Science Guy video on electricity.

• Students will take part in an Electricity Experiment. • Students will learn more about ducks and the pond

environment. • “My Cheeseburger Came from the Farm” students will

learn how cows and other items from the farm are created into the food we eat.

• Students will learn how a typewriter works versus a computer keyboard. In small groups, students will compare and contrast keyboards and typewriters.

Math Activities • What needs electricity? Have students describe, record,

and graph how many times a day they use electricity at home and at school throughout the day.

• Symmetry lesson and art activity: lesson on symmetry. For an art activity, have the students fold a piece of white paper in half, open paper up and have the students paint dots of black paint on one half of the paper, fold in half again. Dots on each side are symmetrical. Have students cut black dots out and place them on cow cutout.

Math Activities Continued • Students will practice addition and subtraction

with Cow Math.

• Whole-y Cow: Fractions Are Fun- Students will learn about fractions and will complete Whole-y Cow worksheets.

• Students will complete the daily pattern during calendar time.

• Students will learn about different measurements of liquids. Partners will measure out specific amounts of liquids using milk cartons and jugs.

Social Studies Activities • Students will learn the steps of reaching an

agreement and problem solving during an activity. • The teacher will present what neutral parties and

ultimatums are. • Students will create a Venn diagram of typewriters

and computer keyboards. • What does it mean to go on strike? Print out

various news articles about strikes and have students find as many different strikes they can with a partner.

• Role Play activity: have students act out different ways they could go on strike at school and home. Make sure they are clear about their demands.

Social Studies Activities Continued

• Role Play activity: having patience- Students will learn demonstrate when it is important to have patience.

• What is needed to run a community? Activity where students will discover how important farms, schools, and businesses are so important to society.

• “Good Deals”- clip out different sale advertisements of foods and have students decide if it is a good deal.

• Students will visit the farm and listen to the farmer discuss cows farm life.

Music and Art Activities

• Students will sing and create actions to “Old McDonald.”

• Students will create their own milk cow during the Cow Symmetry activity.

• Students will create a cow, duck, or hen puppet using the selected handouts.

• Students will listen to farm animal sounds. • Students will create new lines to “Old Farmer Brown”

(Old McDonald.) • Students will make a creative background for their

poems.

Physical Education Activities

• Students will play a “Farmer and the Animals” game.

• Students will “ride” hockey sticks(horses) around the gym and capture the cows.

• Students will play “farm bowling.”

• Students will participate in a roundup game.

• Students will have a “Milk that Cow” relay.
