As 2015 is now behind us, we’re celebrating our 40th year in business at CLI. CL Industries has undergone many changes during its 4 decades in existence. The company was acquired by Florida Crushed Stone in 1975, and was originally called Permacrete. “In the early days we made almost anything for the construction industry… stucco, riprap, concrete, white pool plaster, and deck finishes. Basically whatever we could blend or bag out of our Orlando plant we did,” says Consolidated Minerals President/CEO, Fred Horton. Fred joined Permacrete in 1978, and held just about every position available.

Some memorable products were Pooltite and Kooldeck. Pooltite was an extremely popular high performance white marcite and Kooldeck was an almost indestructible trowel-on deck finish. Kooldeck was later replaced by the less labor intensive spray on deck finishes. Pooltite is still in the product portfolio to this day. In 1978, the company was renamed CL Industries and over the next 18 years, we bagged raw materials for many other companies including Federal White and Trinity Cement. Private labeling accounted for a huge portion of CLI’s revenue until the exposed aggregate pool finishes become popular.

In 1996, shortly after Mr. Horton became General Manager/VP, he was introduced to Dan Gautier and Bruce Torrence while working on a new product called Krystalkrete. Bruce and Dan were developing exposed aggregate pool finishes, and with CLI already separately bagging several of the raw material ingredients of these finishes, it only made sense to forge a partnership. Fred explained, “Dan was the marketing guy and Bruce was a raw materials expert and understood the science behind developing a commercially viable exposed aggregate pool finish.” SunStone and Hydrazzo were developed over the next couple of years and quickly became top sellers. SunStone is an affordable high strength quartz based finish while Hydrazzo is an elegant high end polished marble product. Hydrazzo was the first polished marble pool finish on the market and found it’s way into the pools of celebrities, politicians, and millionaires all over the world.

Pebble finishes, first developed in Australia, reached the United States market right around the turn of the century (late 1990’s that is). Tumbled river rock had been mined and used in landscaping for years, but before pebble pool finishes gained popularity there wasn’t much use for the smaller byproduct pebble. CLI developed SunStone Pearl and CrystalStones in the early 2000’s and experienced a huge growth in revenue when the products started to be sold through distribution. From 1996-2006 revenue increased over 500%. CLI’s pebble product portfolio continues to grow to this day with CrystalStones Smooth and Micro as well as SunStone Pearl Ice. The future is bright and we look forward to a prosperous 2016for everyone in the industry!

CROWN POOLSBrad Correia, President of Crown Pools, started his career in the pool industry maintaining pools of all shapes and sizes. Seeing the good, bad, and the ugly in the pool industry helped guide him to take pride in his work. His passion translated to becoming a respected Craftsman in all stages of construction.

Brad now has dedicated employees that understand all phases of the pool construction process, by learning just the way Brad learned. He quickly became a go to builder in Northeast Florida for commercial amenity pools and high-end residential pools. After seeing the chemistry fluctuate frequently in large commercial pools, Brad and Tempool Inc. became industry innovators by putting

BTS of the Craftsman Series

CL Industries Sunstone Pearl pebble products into the pools. These pebble finishes are so durable that they protect the investment that large communities make when they build pools for their residents.

When we began filming the Craftsman Series with Brad, he was remodeling a resort-style waterpark in Nocatee. It is a famous attraction in Jacksonville and Ponte Vedra Beach, FL. The pool was built in 2010 by another builder who uses a different manufacturer’s pool finish. The pool was beginning to have problems that other commercial pools their age shouldn’t be experiencing. Let’s just say they made sure the job was done right this time around when they hired Crown Pools, Tempool Inc., and CL Industries.

ASK ANAPPLICATOR

Dale in Oklahoma asks, “What is the difference between water washing and brushing a pebble finish to expose the aggregates?”

Jon Temple of Tempool Inc., fields this edition’s question. He’s used both techniques over the years, (and recognizes there’s pros and cons to each) but says “You’re in good hands with an applicator who uses either technique as long as they’re CLI Authorized.”

The two most common processes for exposing pebble finishes are to use water wands or nylon brushes to remove the “cream.” The “cream” is a mixture of dye and cement that is forced to the surface during the troweling process. The cream must be removed in order to expose the pebbles. When using water wands, the applicators use a maze of low pressure spray hoses to wash away the cream during the troweling process. The applicators go back and forth between spraying and troweling.

On the other hand, the brush exposure technique happens after the plaster has been troweled and hardens. Applicators will use a common garden hose to spray the surface then use a series of brushes to remove the cream. After the aggregate is exposed and the finish cures for 24 hours, the application team will return to acid and pressure wash the surface. This happens for both water wand and brush exposures.

Water Wanding Exposure Pros:

Slightly more resistant to water chemistry abuse, because there is less cementitious material exposed.

Nearly identical to the product samples.

Faster overall process.

Extremely even exposure.

Brush Exposure Pros:

Reduced cleanup time. Smoother finish. More water color variety, because there is more colored cementitious material exposed. Less job site waste.

SAVE MONEY THIS WINTERPOOL SCHOOL

Swimming pools are typically used less in the winter, and therefore need less of a chemical load to maintain proper water chemistry. Here’s some quick tips to further save you money this winter season.

1. In milder climates, simply run your filter less. It will save you money every winter. When the water is colder, it’s harder for algae to grow, so the filter isn’t needed as long. You can run your pump 4-6 hrs a day, or invest in a multi speed pump that runs slower and uses less energy.

2. Keep your winter cover clean. Use a pool cover pump and get the water off your cover when it rains or the snow melts. Brush leaves and debris off once it dries. If your pool water slowly gets nasty throughout the winter months, you may end up spending more money fixing your

pool’s water chemistry. Some people even end up having to drain their pool and start from scratch. A little TLC (tender love and care) throughout the winter will prevent this from happening.

3. Buy your chemicals in bulk when smaller pool stores have a sale.

4. Store your vacuum head upside down, and away from your chlorine. Many people are forced to replace their vacuum head too soon because the brushes on the bottom fall off or become flattened and ineffective.

5. If you are in a cold climate, winterizing chemical kits are designed to save you money, time, and effort. Your pool may become a green swamp if not properly maintained all winter.

BRING THEHONEYMOON HOME

CL INDUSTRIES PRESENTS:

Bali RecreatedGetting married and going on your honeymoon can be the best time of your life. So what better way to remember the vacation than to bring the honeymoon home, and permanently place the fondest memories of your honeymoon right in your backyard. A Floridian couple did just that. They set out on a mission to find some of the most beautiful pools in Bali and recreate what they could within their modest budget.

The Balinese culture’s focus on custom-made home decor is something to be admired. Hand made craftsmanship is something that most consumers value, whether you like the Balinese style or not. There were so many impressive works of art they wanted to bring back; the wood carvings, hand made paintings, hand carved front doors, swimming pools and custom outdoor furniture. Usually works of art made by craftsmen are quite expensive, but in Bali everything is affordable.

One of the few things in America that is still crafted by hand is a backyard swimming pool. Almost every in ground swimming pool is unique, and has the homeowner’s personality imprinted in the ground. Of course, you don’t have to have your own swimming pool to figuratively ’bring your honeymoon home.’ It’s more of a state of mind that they wanted to be reminded of.

Picking a finish color:

They knew right away that the water had to be on the greener end of the blue/green spectrum. The newlyweds consulted their CL Industries sales rep, and found that CLI had a very close match to all 3 of the luxurious honeymoon pools they photographed.

Stay tuned to see their inspiration come to life…

It’s tough to beat reading a book

by the pool under a circular rattan

lounger while enjoying a few adult

beverages. This rectangular infinite

pool provided a magnificent

view and great way to cool off.

The spring fed pool was brisk with a magnificent view of the inland

jungle. The view over the infinity edge revealed a stream 150 feet

below with exotic birds and flowers, adding to the magical feelings

of the place. (This water color can be closely replicated with Crystal
