College grads finding home in Cleveland ZACH SHAFRON | IRVING I. STONE EDITORIAL INTERN
Many outsiders haven’t always looked at Cleve-land as a place to live. Whether it’s lack of development, the rise in crime or the years
of sports misery, not many college graduates have the “216” as a destination in their plans. However, it’s time to think again.
The Cleveland Cavaliers are deep in the NBA play-offs thanks to the return of superstar LeBron James. This summer, Cleveland will host the Republican Na-
tional Convention at Quicken Loans Arena, bringing millions of dollars and plenty of attention to the city. A redevelopment movement is underway, and there are many jobs in health care, along with a favorable cost-of-living. Cleveland is on the rise and is the perfect place for a recent college graduate to make home.
The personal finance website SmartAsset ranks Cleveland as the 25th best city for a college graduate to live in, based on average job availability.
Forbes.com ranks Cleveland as the 16th most afford-able city when it comes to housing availability, with an unemployment rate of 7.3 percent and a median salary for college grads at $54,900.
Bloomberg.com ranked Cleveland as the 15th best city for jobs.

Israeli map gift of Fairmount Temple teacher, husbandJONAH L. ROSENBLUM | STAFF [email protected]
For her 25th anniversary of teaching at Anshe Chesed Fairmount Temple in Beachwood, Amy Nadler, and her
husband, Larrie, donated a map of Israel to the temple.
It was no ordinary map.The map is 30 feet by 15 feet. In addi-
tion to an enormous made-to-order, up-to-date image of Israel, the map features a side-by-side, to-scale comparison of Israel and Ohio as well as a picture of Israel with its Middle Eastern neighbors, allowing children to get a better sense of the country’s size. The sides of the map inflate allowing children to “jump into” Israel.
As soon as Nadler saw the map, rented for a few days from another congregation long before her 25th anniversary teaching at the temple, she knew she had to have it.
“This is like the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen,” Nadler recalled saying. “We need to have one of these.”
To which she was told: “If you’d like to buy this as a gift for the temple, go right ahead.”
Years later, after looking all over the Internet, Nadler found her desired map in just one place: Attractive Land, an Israeli company. Despite ordering the map in February, the map didn’t arrive in Beachwood until May. It arrived the day after the temple’s religious school let out for the summer and just in time for Yom Ha’atzmaut, for which the preschool students got to try out the map. They pretended to float in the Dead Sea. They found the Western Wall, which they had learned about.
“We were really happy that we at least got it the week before Yom Ha’atzmaut,” Nadler said. “A lot of them jumped in, because they felt like they were jumping into Israel.”
Why did the Nadler family decide to buy the temple a gift – rather than simply receive congratulations and praise for her 25th? Amy Nadler said it’s all about a lifetime in the temple, the temple that her parents, Gloria and the recently deceased Irving Fine, introduced to her, where she got married and where her kids had their
b’nai mitzvah.“I’ve been here since I was a little girl
and Fairmount Temple is just a very close place to my heart,” Nadler said.
