The Largely Unknown Role of Taxation in Shaping Societies
Accountants spend much of their careers dealing with taxes. Tax
collectors were the first accountants in history, and tax records da-
ting back almost 6,000 years have provided much of our knowledge
of ancient societies! Ancient Egypt’s climate allowed many of those
records to survive for millennia. According to what scholars have discovered, Egyptians
were taxed on virtually everything: sales, imports, exports, slaves, foreigners, businesses
and agricultural production. The Egyptians went so far as to tax farmers on what should
grow on their fields. That’s where Geometry comes into play. In Greek, geometry
means “earth measure”. Geometry arose due to the need to
measure the earth (or area) of each farm. So taxation gave rise to a
whole field of mathematics to allow taxes to be levied against an-
cient farmers! ——

nity. East, West and Metro Campuses along with our Corporate College Westlake loca-
tion processed over 1,000 tax returns. The opportunity to volunteer is a worthwhile expe-
rience and with 30 hours of service time, your volunteer time is reflected on your college
transcript as well.
The Job Market :
The role of accounting and finance professionals continues to expand
into a decision making and business-partnering role.1 These profession-
als are being asked to “analyze data and provide strategic recommendations from identify-
ing ways to manage costs and grow profits to assisting with human resources and opera-
tions decisions” 2 according to a recent survey by Robert Half & Associates, 2014. The
CPA designation is employers’ most sought after credential. Positions such as Staff Ac-
countant, Financial Analyst, Controller, Internal Auditor and Senior Accountants still run
strong in North Central Ohio.
Top four applied skill gaps as identified by Robert Half include critical thinking/problem
solving; professionalism/work ethic; written communications and leadership.

Changes in the Accounting Curriculum:
Accounting 1321, computer applications in accounting will no longer be offered. The tech-
nology aspects of this course are integrated into the new Accounting Capstone course ACCT
2995.
Auditing, offered last Spring as a special topics course, has a new, permanent course number.
ACCT2510. This course is recommended for post-graduate students or students seeking to
sit for the CPA exam or to satisfy an accounting elective requirement. This course satisfies
the Accountancy Board of Ohio requirement for an Auditing course.
VITA tax training course has also adopted a permanent course number. ACCT 2050 is
offered each Fall as a training resource for students and community who wish to learn the
basics about federal and state taxes . This course focuses on the requirements needed to pass
the IRS examination to become a Tax volunteer at a VITA clinic. Volunteer at Tri-C or in
your own community. Though Individual Taxation (ACCT1041) is suggested , it is not a
required prerequisite for this course.
QuickBooks—ACCT2520 will be offered in the Summer as an Accounting elective to pro-
vide in-depth hands on experience specifically with Quickbooks Accounting software. Con-
sider becoming a certified Quickbooks professional after passing the certification exam. (The
certification exam is not integrated into this course.)
New Accounting CAPSTONE—ACCT 2995*—Accounting Technology integrates computer
applications (including accounting small business software and intensive spreadsheet applica-
tions) into case analyses in various business scenarios. Individual and group projects and
presentations are key components of this course.
**If your college catalog year indicates you need to take ACCT2990 as a capstone course, you
will be required to take ACCT2995 as your capstone course if you have not completed the
ACCT1321 course. If you completed ACCT1321 with a C or better grade, you can substitute
BADM2501 for the ACCT2990 capstone.
