Confirmation: Do I have what it takes? A soldier is prepared for battle – years of training, hours honing skills, times of discomfort, these moments make the soldier ready so that when conflict arises, it does not slow the soldier down. Preparation is key. In much the same way, we need to train and prepare ourselves for the struggles we find in life. In this way, we train ourselves in Virtue so that when confronted with difficulty, we are able to tuck our heads in prayer and enter the fray unafraid.

Elevate: The Saints: We are surrounded by the saints – a cloud of witnesses who have struggled mightily in life so that they can serve God and spend eternity with our Lord. LENTEN ACTIVITIESSt. Francis de Sales Lenten Homily Series – Beginning Ash Wednesday and every weekend during Lent, Father Dave will preach a series of homilies about the Mass, helping us gain a deeper understanding in our faith as Catholic Christians. This series can help us learn how the Mass is biblical, from start to finish. Encourage friends and family to attend with you!

Liturgy of the Hours evening prayer at St. Francis – Wednesdays, beginning at 6:00 p.m. in the Church: This is the prayer of the church worldwide and a wonderful way to deepen your Lenten experience. Handouts will be available, but we ask that all who are able please download the FREE iBrievery app from the app store or Google play store in order to follow along with responses. This is a great way to prepare for the sacrament of the Eucharist at Mass directly following at 6:30 p.m.

Stations of the Cross at St. Francis – Fridays, beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the Church: Join us in prayer and meditation through the Stations of the Cross, where we commemorate Jesus Christ’s last day on Earth as a man. The 14 stations may be thought of as a mini pilgrimage as we move from station to station, recalling the specific events from Christ’s last day.

LENTEN ACTIVITIES CONTINUED40 Days, 40 Cans: A Can-A-Day for Lent: As we prepare for Easter and the resurrection of the Lord, consider making a sacrifice for the hungry of our community. The St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry is sponsoring a “40 Days, 40 Cans” campaign. Each family is asked to donate 40 cans to the pantry as their “works of love” during Lent. The pantry is in need of canned fruit, beans, soup, spaghetti sauce, skillet dinners and personal items (toilet paper, toothpaste, laundry detergent). Families may also make a monetary donation to the pantry by placing a check in the offering, listing the food pantry in the memo section of the check.

Ecumenical Lenten Services and Luncheons: The Ecumenical Lenten Service and Luncheon held at 2nd Presbyterian Church, 42 E. Church Street has been a Lenten tradition for many years. St. Francis was a part of this Lenten practice from the beginning. Unfortunately we are not able to participate this year. A short service is led by the pastor of the host church at about Noon, followed by a luncheon prepared by the women of the host church. St. Francis parishioners should feel free to attend. Coordinator Needed for our Parish School of Religion! Fr. David Sizemore and a growing parish community are looking for a mission-oriented and faith-filled person who is passionate about helping young Catholics, grades K-5, become disciples of Jesus Christ by teaching them to become disciple-makers through faith formation at St. Francis de Sales Parish, Newark Ohio. This person should have a college degree or willing to work toward a degree in theology sponsored by the parish. PC and AV skills, ability to honor and maintain confidentiality, well-organized, self-motivated, manage tasks and work independently with minimal supervision, team-player, effectively communicate with staff and volunteers,

GIVING TREE THANKS This year’s Giving Tree was a great success! Thank you to our helpers: Boy Scout Pack 8, SFDS PTA and teachers, The Wise Family Foundation, Uptown Cycles, Jerry Deck and the Knights of Columbus, and our Parish Giving Tree Volunteers. They all provided crucial pieces of the puzzle which when assembled, shows a picture of our Christian love for our neighbors. Over 100 children received clothing and gifts this year. In addition, each family received grocery cards to provide a Christmas Dinner. However, we could not have given a single gift without the amazing generosity of the parish. Gretchen O’Neill Scholarship Application packages for the Gretchen O’Neill Scholarship are now available to current local seventh graders.

A full tuition scholarship will be awarded annually to a rising eighth grader (who is currently in the seventh grade) at Blessed Sacrament School and St. Francis de Sales School who best exemplifies Gretchen O’Neill’s extraordinary work ethic and her motto, “Be kind.”

Family income and GPA will not be considered in evaluating students for the scholarships. Rather, students must be working to their maximum abilities and exemplify kindness and an extraordinary work ethic. This criteria places the scholarship within reach of every student.

The ROSARY…plus Saints and the Subject of Sacrifice…

We look on Lent as a special time of Prayer, Penance, SACRIFICE and good works as we prepare for the celebration of Easter. More than anything, Lent is a time for internal renewal. Our beloved Mother Teresa was a giant when it came to sharing her view on a subject in a clear way that everyone would understand. Quote: “You must give what will cost you something. This is giving not just what you can live without, but what you can’t live without, or don’t want to live without… something you really like. Then your sacrifice becomes a gift, which will have great value before God. This giving until it hurts…this sacrifice, is what I call LOVE IN ACTION.” Another clear speaker was Saint Padre Pio…he said it this way: “The greatest act of faith is that which rises to your lips in total darkness, together with the sacrifices, sufferings and wholehearted efforts of a determined will to do good. THIS ACT OF FAITH STRIKES THROUGH THE DARKNESS OF YOUR SOUL LIKE A BOLT OF LIGHTNING…IT RAISES YOU UP AND LEADS YOU TO GOD.”

Remember, you and your family are always invited to take part in our weekly Rosary for Peace, every Saturday at 4:35 p.m., just before Mass.


IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD

An open letter to the men of St. Francis de Sales ParishAre you feeling called to do more?We at St. Vincent Haven are looking for about 30 MEN – strong Christian men. We need men who don’t wince in the face of sacrifice or hard work. We need men who don’t place their lamp under a lamp stand, but rather let it shine (Matthew 5:15). Our society today is greatly deprived of loving, sacrificial, manly men. We want to model the Christian virtue of “manliness” to our men at St. Vincent Haven.

What? We want these men to act as mentors, one on one, to the residents at our shelter, St. Vincent Haven, during the duration of their stay with us. Mentors would be assigned to only one resident at a time.

Expectations? Manly mentors would meet their “mentee” by phone or in person once weekly. They could meet at our shelter or McDonalds; go bowling, do a small job together, or volunteer somewhere. The point is to model the “manly,” God first, family-centered Christian life to them, simply by spending time together.
