With half a million

people in the UK

dependent on food aid,

this year’s Lent Appeal will focus

on food poverty, and spiritual and

practical ways of tackling this.

Donations collected during Lent

will go to local projects that help

to put healthy food on people’s

plates.

With many families only one

unexpected bill away from not

being able to afford to eat, the

End Hunger Fast campaign will

highlight the struggle of people in

food poverty at national and local

levels. Focusing on this theme as

a diocese we want to encourage

churches to use Lent as a time of

fasting, praying, reflecting and

giving.

The Bible tells us that when the

Jewish people faced a national

crisis they prayed and fasted for

three days (Esther 9: 31); fasting

and praying helps us to focus on

ways in which we can better help

our struggling neighbours.

More information on the

campaigns, and resources for

people who want to take part and

stand up against the scandal of

food poverty, will be released as

we approach the start of Lent,

including details of the projects

that will be supported –

Ecoworks, in Nottingham, and

developing the idea of Edible

Church Yards in the county.

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby has endorsed a new

book on evangelism written by the Rt Revd Tony Porter,

Bishop of Sherwood. ‘Seed Scattering’ – a paperback produced

by the Diocese of Southwell & Nottingham – is described as ‘a model

for spreading the Christian faith’ and is Bishop Tony’s fifth book.

Justin Welby writes – “Bishop Tony leads from the front. Clearly and

practically he sets out the ways and means of sharing the gospel

locally, and urges us all to realize that our own hands are full of seeds

and we are those called to do the scattering. “

Bishop Tony and his wife, Lucille, have travelled round the diocese,

speaking at parish events attended by both church members and non –

members. From quizzes and plays to assemblies, dog walks and

Men’s Breakfasts, Bishop Tony draws on his experience visiting

prisoners and residential addiction centres, through parish life in

Moss Side and as a Manchester City football chaplain – and in

response to the mission statement of Jesus. He reflects: “Jesus’

ministry was to the marginalised, the excluded, the ‘stinking rich and

the stinking poor.’ As heads and tails are two sides of the same coin,

so go together serving the excluded and proclaiming the Gospel.

There is no tension; you simply cannot have one without the other.”

He said: “Lucille and I have loved our 22 ‘Seed Scattering’ weekends

in parishes’ right across Nottinghamshire, including a fabulous recent

visit to St Thomas’ Kirkby as they reached out with the Good News of

the Gospel to the community, and to Mansfield Town Football Club

for various activities. Our prayer is that the book will inspire my

brother (and hopefully soon to be sister) bishops to model good

practice in scattering the seed of the Gospel, leading people to Christ,

and encouraging parish churches to do the same.”

For further information about

Seed Scattering and to order a

copy of the book (or any of

Bishop Tony’s other books)

please Email

[email protected] or

tel: 01636 819133.

Seed Scattering is £5 each or ten

copies for £30. Cheques are to be

made payable to ‘Southwell &

Nottingham DBF’ – and send your

address details so books can be

posted out.

Scattering seeds of faith in

Nottinghamshire

Vacancy in See

Consultation

The process of identifying the

next Bishop of Southwell and

Nottingham has started.

A series of consultation

evenings began last month.

It is hoped as many church

members as possible will be

encouraged to attend, to join the

debate and help in the important

task of appointing the right

person to lead the Church in

Nottinghamshire.

Each session will start with

prayer followed by an

explanation of the process.

There will then be discussion on

what skills and gifts the next

Bishop will need to lead the

diocese in the transforming

mission of God.

The consultation events, which

start at 7pm, are as follows:

February 4:

Worksop St Anne

February 19:

St John’s Centre,

Mansfield

A further date is set to be

added in the Newark and

Sherwood area.

Call the parish nurse?

News in brief. . . News in brief. . . News in brief. . . News in brief. . .

Do you have any nurses in

your church? Or are you

one yourself? Then you

might be interested in the concept

of Parish nursing...

The Bible gives us a model of

health that includes physical,

mental, community and spiritual

wellbeing. In other words, whole

person health. Yet often these

things are divided up and provided

for in separate ways. Parish nurses

seek to do some joined up

interventions for public health.

Not dressings or injections, but health advice, advocacy and

accompaniment. They are appointed or employed and line-managed

by the local church, for one or more sessions a week, which can be on

a paid basis or just expenses only. They are registered nurses, so they

follow their professional code of practice. All of them have some

community experience and many of them work in the NHS for the

rest of the week. They build good relationships with other health

providers in the area, and with the pastoral team, offering extra help

with understanding of medical conditions, risk factors and treatments.

This enables the church to reach out to its community in a new way...

through health ministry: helping people of all ages and backgrounds

to enjoy better health, to use the health services more effectively, to

manage any chronic conditions they may have, to volunteer to help

others, and to pray... sometimes for the first time.

Interested? Then contact David McCoulough, Director of

Partnerships & Mission 01636 817246, email:

course, study days, resourcing, professional and coordination support

for churches and nurses.

The Revd Sue Caddy, ParishPriest, All Hallows, Ordsallwrites:

These were the words of our

guide as arrived for our

visit to the town of our

Saviour’s birth.

We had travelled from Galilee

having visited some of the sites

associated with the life of Jesus.

Already we had experienced so

many thought provoking

moments, challenging our

perceptions of the land of

Israel/Palestine.

All Hallows, Ordsall had begun to

explore a parish partnership with

St Paul’s Anglican Episcopal

Church, Shefa Amr near

Nazareth. Also Thrumpton

Primary School, Retford were

looking for an International link

and Fr Fuad, Parish Priest of St

Paul’s put me in touch with the

Sisters of Nazareth School in

Shefa Amr. This visit was to

cement those relationships.

We spent time with Fr Fuad and

his congregation, worshipping

with them on the Sunday

morning. Preaching whilst Fr

Fuad interpreted was an

experience and a privilege I will

never forget. Our visit to the

school was a real eye opener and

not what we expected. We had

been told that we would be

spending two hours in the school

with the English teachers. On any

visit to this land never make

assumptions about what anything

means because you are likely to

be mistaken. I assumed we

would be observing, looking at

the children’s work and watching

lessons. No, we were the teachers.

We were split into groups and

travelled around various English

activities with our group of

children leading them in their

lessons. It was moving, fun and

humbling. The children and staff

were very pleased to meet us.

Their English was excellent.

Most of the girls I met asked me

“Do you like ‘One Direction?”

Children are the same the world

over. Why do we change and put

up barriers as we grow?

Our partnership with the church

and the school has now begun and

we look forward to our future

together.

A member of our group has

described the Pilgrimage as like

making a necklace. Each visit

was a beautiful jewel more

amazing and precious than the

last and they kept coming.

Arriving in Bethlehem after all

those experiences was yet another

jewel to be added. The people

were so welcoming and friendly

which was very moving given the

situation they are living with.

The words said to me many times

were ‘Pray for us’.

As we arrived in Jerusalem we

stood just inside the Jaffa Gate as

I read Psalm 122. ‘I was glad

when they said to me “Let us go

to the house of the Lord”’.

Pray for peace in Israel/Palestine.

Go and see the place and stand

alongside the Living Stones of

this Holy Land.

A Pilgrimage evening will be

held on Wednesday, 5th

February, 7pm in All Hallows

Church. Pictures and

reflections of the Pilgrimage

and visit will be shown. Open to

anyone considering a

pilgrimage and thinking of

exploring a partnership in

Israel/Palestine.

Clergy in our Church

SchoolsThis is a new and important event

which focuses on the rapidly

changing role of the parish priest

Governors.

Staff of the Education Team and

the Department for Development

The diocese is committed to encouraging and promoting ‘living worship’, and we all have

more to do in understanding and celebrating the diversity of worship in our churches.

We are delighted to welcome Geraldine Latty and Philip Jakob, both of whom will share

their vision for worship and lead us in creativity. Through this day we hope to provide

opportunities to look afresh at all aspects of worship by exploring liturgy, preaching,

music and prayer. This promises to be a day of challenge and inspiration!

2. TEACHING CONGREGATIONS TO SING

Geraldine Latty is steeped in the Pentecostal tradition, and has also spent a number of years being a part of the Methodist church. She worked as a music teacher for 12 years, and left teaching to ‘see what God wanted to do with her time’. Whether it is giving vocal coaching to teenage mums or heading up the music teams in churches, running a community gospel choir, or leading worship at national conferences – the passion of her heart is to be one who knows she is pursued and loved by God, and to shout out loud that as God loves her so God loves and welcomes everyone. Opening Keynote speaker – worship, singing, music, and celebration!

12. ‘LOVE GOES ON’ – INTRODUCING BERNADETTE FARRELL’S COLLECTION

Philip Jakob spent the first 14 years after graduation as a secondary school music teacher in North London and briefly in Manchester. Since 1994 he has been Director of Music for the Cathedral and Diocese of Hallam. He presents the cathedral as a model for the diocese with wide ranges and choices of music. He is a published composer of liturgical music and is in wide demand as liturgical animator at conferences across the country, working with John Bell and the Wild Goose Resource Group and as a Member of the Iona Community.Closing Keynote Speaker – Music for a heavy church that washes the feet of the world

3. ENCOURAGING CHILDREN TO SING AND PLAY

Peter Price is a very experienced music teacher, organist and choir master. He is currently director of Music a St Leonard’s Church, Wollaton and a local trainer for RSCM.

4. MAKING THE MOST OF INTERCESSIONS

Jacqui Jones is Canon Precentor at Southwell Minster, and works with the diocese and Cathedral in developing creative and imaginative use of prayers and liturgy.

5. WIDENING YOUR REPERTOIRE WITH CHOIRS

Guy Turner is a Lay Clerk in the choir of Southwell Minster, and a freelance composer, performer and teacher. His published works include humorous choral songs, church music and a number of hymns in the new Methodist Hymnal Singing the Faith.

6. CREATIVE YOUTH WORSHIP

Angela Brymer is Youth Ministry Adviser for the diocese, and experienced in organising, running and leading youth worship and engagement events.

7. THE WAY FORWARD FOR WORSHIP13. WORSHIP AND SOCIAL MEDIA

Christopher Woods spent three years helping the church nationally engage with worship as Secretary of the Liturgical Commission and Worship Development Officer. He has recently moved to be Priest-in-Charge of St Anne’s Hoxton, (with St Columba), with added training responsibilities in the Stepney area.

8. ALL-AGE WORSHIP – JOYS AND CHALLENGES

Clare Harding is an experienced teacher and great communicator to all ages. She is married to Nick, Children’s Ministry Adviser for the diocese. They both have experience in leading and developing all-age worship in local churches and large-scale events.

9. READING AND SPEAKING IN CHURCH

Rowena Edlin-White originally trained for the theatre and has utilised that training for 15 years as a Reader and ordained minister in Nottingham. Her workshop isn’t about elocution but about being heard loud and clear!

10. EFFECTIVE PREACHING

Tony Porter worked in urban and city parishes in the north of England before becoming Bishop of Sherwood. He is committed to basic principles of preparation and delivery of effective preaching.

11. FRESH EXPERESSSIONS OF WORSHIP

Mark Rodel is Tutor in Pioneer Ministry at St John’s College, Nottingham and Pioneer Minister and Vicar in the Parish of All Hallows, Lady Bay with St Edmund, Holme Pierrepont and Adbolton. Mark is keen to explore how the Church can stimulate and engage with the spiritual questing of those who do not consider themselves Christians.

14. CREATIVE PRAYER AND PRAYER STATIONS

Lucy Cleland serves as Bishop’s Chaplain in the diocese of Southwell & Nottingham having previously been a parish priest in Cambridgeshire. She appreciates creativity and interaction in prayer and worship.

15. MODERN WORSHIP SONGS – GOOD SOURCES, AND WRITING SONGS

Peter Huxtable is vicar at Stapleford, and an accomplished musician and song-writer. In his workshop he will direct people to good sources of new songs, and help them think through writing songs from scratch.

ANNUAL VISITATIONS 2014

C I T A T I O N

of

ALL LICENSED CLERGY WITHIN THE ARCHDEACONRY OF NOTTINGHAM

I very much look forward to welcoming you to one of our Archdeacon’s Visitations in May. This year the Visitations will take place in parish churches in our deaneries. All services start at 7.30pm. Churchwardens and Clergy may choose which they wish to attend. As always, members of Parochial Church Councils and other supporters are welcome to attend the service. Please ensure that the Churchwardens post their Forms of Declaration to the Registry at Jubilee House prior to the Service. I would particularly like to welcome new Churchwardens at the Visitation and would be grateful if you would send their names beforehand. Could you send at the same time details of those who have not stood again, or not been re-elected, with an indication of the number of years served. I would also like to be told of those Churchwardens who have died during the past year so that they can be remembered in prayer. This information should be sent to the Archdeacons’ Office and it would help to have it in writing by the end of April. You are encouraged to arrive in good time for the service as on-street car parking in the vicinity of the hosting churches is not straight forward. There are pay car parks within easy reach in both cases. The Incumbents and Parochial Church Councils of the host Parishes have most kindly agreed to provide refreshments for all attending the Visitation following the service. Arising from the work of Lesslie Newbigin and the Gospel and Our Culture Network the missional

church movement has made a significant impact in existing congregations worldwide, enabling them

to be formed as missional communities rather than just doing mission. In the UK much effort, energy

and resource has been engaged with developing Fresh Expressions of Church alongside Pioneer

Ministry and Pioneer Ministers for those 60% of the population who, surveys suggest would not

normally consider worshipping in an existing congregation. A significant amount of debate has been

generated in the UK about the relationship between Fresh Expressions and so-called ‘inherited

church.’

This international day conference seeks to bring together practitioners and theologians of missional

church from around the world with their counterparts in the UK Fresh Expressions movement. We

hope for rich and mutually beneficial dialogue and conversation where practice, research and

reflection are shared together.

Speakers will include representatives from missional church initiatives in the UK, East Midlands and

South Africa and others will cover topics such as; research into Fresh Expressions by the Church

Army (Claire Dalpra), Church Planting research (Cathy Ross), a theological rationale for Fresh

Expressions (Michael Moynagh) and FX practitioners including input from the national leadership of

Messy Church.

Any questions about the arrangements for the day can be directed to;

St John the Evangelist, Carrington, Nottingham

0.5 stipendiary Vicar, stand alone or possibly linked to another post A diverse urban parish, socially, economically and ethnically, two miles north of Nottingham City Centre, population of approx 9,000. The community has much of the buzz of an exciting modern city culture, and the parish borders vibrant, multi-cultural Forest Fields and Hyson Green, the more suburban but still diverse Sherwood and Sherwood Rise and the mixed housing, light industry and green spaces of Basford. The church reflects that local diversity with members from a range of socio-economic and cultural backgrounds. A significant number are drawn from across Nottingham, due to the ordered Catholic worship and inclusive values that St John’s owns. The new incumbent will lead collaboratively on major initiatives going forward at parish, deanery and diocesan level. The congregation are praying for a priest who:

will be pastoral to all, inside and outside our church

community
