Social Organization

• Arctic wolves live in packs that usually consist of seven to eight members. They have a highly complex social order and each member has a place within the dominance hierarchy. All wolves are aware of the position they hold in the pack through communication with body posture. Packs usually have an Alpha male and Female but all members share the responsibility of caring for the pups.

Fun Facts

• Wolves will often go days without food• Wolves can eat up to 10 pounds of meat

at 1 time• Food in the arctic is scarce so they will eat

every part of their prey including: fur and bones

• Younger pack members will “babysit” the cubs while mothers are hunting

Conservation

• Throughout history wolves have been threatened by humans. The arctic wolf is the one subspecies still found over the whole of it’s original range, due to how uninhabited the arctic is and how rarely the arctic wolf encounters humans.
