The Cleburne News, Thursday, August 30, 2012 – 3B

Something old and something new may be the story line of the 2012 season for the Cleburne County Tigers. Michael Shortt’s 2011 team graduated a stable of skill play-ers including Matt Norton, a two-year starter at quarterback, and record-setting running back Rocky Hayes. Also gone are the bulk of Norton’s corps of receivers.

Where the Tigers have experience re-turning this year is in the offensive line. Center Drew Rutledge, quick guard Ezra Joslin and strong tackle Matthew Shortt return to start this year at the positions where they were starters last season. Shortt also has experience at guard. Joslin and Rutledge are seniors. Shortt is a junior. In addition, senior Allen Taylor has moved from quick tackle, where he started last year, to tight end.

“We’ve got six linemen now. He’s in there to block. We do throw passes to him and we may throw some to him because he can catch it a little bit but we’ve got him in there to stretch the defensive front out and to block,” Shortt said of his new tight end.

Moving into the starting role at quick tackle is junior Damion Benefield, a ‘B’ team lineman last year. Junior Dalton Boyd, out all of last season with a leg in-jury, will be the starter at strong guard.

“If those two can come along … I think

that’s going to be to our advantage be-cause a lot of the teams we play will be very athletic and we feel like maybe run-ning the ball at people behind our offen-sive line may slow the game down. Try to keep the ball away from people, that’s what we may do,” said Shortt.

The primary reserves on the offensive line, sophomores Tyler Berry and Chris Chappell, can expect to be on the field of-ten. “I think we’re going to probably play about seven in a game, about seven guys that rotate in and out,” Shortt said of his plans for the offensive line. … “Our jam-boree was good for us. It gave those other two some experience.”

At quarterback, sophomore Brady Padgett got off to a solid start throwing the ball as did junior Christian Henson, the primary backup at quarterback and a starter at wide receiver.

“We feel like we’ve got two capable quarterbacks going into the start,” said Shortt.

“I was real pleased with the way we caught the ball (in the jamboree). We caught the ball extremely well, ran good routes. Are there any All-Americans there? No, but boy they run good routes and catch the ball. That’s all you can ask for them to do. They keep drives going,” Shortt said.

Junior Jeremiah McLeroy joined Hen-son as a starter at wide receiver. Coming on in relief were junior Mathew Morrow and sophomore Brandon Horn, also the

No. 3 quarterback. Each of the four drew praise from Shortt.

Passes to backs coming out of the back-field were limited during the jamboree game but those are a part of Cleburne County’s arsenal, too.

“Trey (Bolton) and John (Butler) both have gotten better about catching the ball out of the backfield and both of them can run with it in the open field,” said Shortt of his primary running backs.

Fullbacks Danny Sweatt and Blake Turner are also capable receivers.

Senior Tito Roblero returns to handle punts, kickoffs, extra points and field goals. Against Ranburne, Roblero was 2-for-2 in extra points and connected on a 37-yard field goal with about two minutes left in the game. Sophomore Anderson Jacks made his only extra point attempt.

When the Tigers take the field on de-fense this year, Cleburne County fans will see something they have never seen from the vaunted ‘Black Death’ unit.

“They’re going to see way more second-ary people. … It’s a more aggressive type defense. Instead of sitting on our heels and reacting to what the guys do in front of us, we’re going to be doing a little bit more aggressiveness up front and making the offense try to react to what we’re do-ing instead of us reacting to what they’re doing,” Shortt said in describing the new philosophy on defense.

The change is not without risks.“It does put you in positions where

you’re one-on-one tackling,” Shortt ac-knowledged. … “You see this big gap open up and then one guy makes a tackle. For years, I didn’t like those big gaps opened up. I wanted to control everything up front and have a man and a half and some times two men always responsible for a guy but spread offenses have just about taken that away from you. When they’re spread out all over the field, you can’t put two guys on one man.”

In preparation for the new demands, Shortt said the Tigers have spent at least 15 minutes of each practice working on nothing but tackling.

“We’re going to be more sound versus spread offenses and that’s what we see,” he predicted. “If someone wants to come back in there and get in two tight ends and wing-T then we know how to do that. We can play that game.”

The guys that will have to make the new approach work include Drake Wil-liamson, Christian Carter, Dylan Crump-ton, Blake Pointer, Geoffrey Teague, Clay Smith, Alex Sandmann, Isaiah Ware, Grif-fin Turner, Blake Turner, Taylor, Shortt, Chappell, Joslin, Sweat, McLeroy, Butler and Henson.

“I was pleased with our tackling. I was pleased with our safeties coming up to give run support,” Shortt said of the play of the defensive unit against Ranburne. “Everything (wrong) I saw on film can be corrected. We just needed a game like that against other people.”

A change in offenses is often hard for high school football players. A change in offensive coordinators at the same time doubles the po-tential for difficulty. The Ranburne Bulldogs made both those changes over the summer. Judging by their performance in Friday’s jamboree in Heflin against Cleburne County, the Bulldogs made the transition smoothly.

Ranburne head coach Chad Young said that when Stephen Bailey came from Woodland to become offensive coordinator at Ranburne, Bailey wanted to retain the running game the Bulldogs already had in place. Young wanted Bailey to incorporate the passing attack he brought with him from Woodland.

“All of our running game is what we’ve been doing,” Young said of the new offense, noting that some-times the ground plays would come out of a shotgun look now. “The passing game is what we’ve com-pletely revamped.”

Young said from the very begin-ning Bailey tried to retain as much of the terminology the players al-ready knew as possible to make the changes easier to grasp.

“I think we’ve done a good job of that,” Young said.

Starting along the interior of the offensive line in the jamboree were center Cole Yearta, guards Austin Jordan and Zach Patterson and tack-les Tyler Connell and Hunter Peter-son. Peterson, Connell, Jordan and Yearta are juniors.

Patterson is a sophomore. Sopho-more Braydon Wilson was the tight end and senior Bradley Gibbs the split end. In the backfield were quar-terback Jared Edwards, fullback Clayton Young, tailback Dylan Tul-lis and wingback Shane Tullis. Ed-wards, Young and Shane Tullis are seniors. Dylan Tullis is a freshman.

The first unit on defense included Patterson and Yearta at the ends with Jordan and Connell as the tackles. Young and sophomore Kyle Lov-vorn were the outside linebackers.

At inside linebackers were Shane Tullis and freshman Dalton Wig-gins. Sophomore G.W. Caldwell, nursing an injury that kept him out of the jamboree, will be an inside linebacker when he’s healthy.

Gibbs and Wilson started as the cornerbacks with Edwards at safety.

The Bulldogs substituted exten-sively in the first half of the jam-boree, giving several combinations playing time together, and the sec-ond half was devoted to allowing reserves to gain experience.

The coach said the pattern of fre-quent substitutions should continue into the regular season to offset the effects of a number of two-way starters.

“I’m going to say at least four or five guards and tackles,” Young said when asked about the rotation on offense, adding that there would be other substitutions as well.

Senior Daniel Voss will be the first reserve at guard. Senior Josh Ham-mond and freshman Ryan Smith head the list of reserves at tackle. Freshman Logan Sibley is the back-up at center. Junior Devin Rehberg is a split end. Young predicted that freshman Blake Young and sopho-more Adam Sheppard would soon work their way into playing time at guard and tight end respectively.

Behind Edwards at quarterback are Lovvorn and Dylan Wiggins. Brady Whittle is the backup at full-back with Dalton Wiggins at tail-back. Dylan Wiggins will also play wingback.

“Defensively, we’ve got a lot of people who can play on the line of scrimmage,” said Young.

Most of the offensive linemen will also have a position on the de-fensive side. In addition, Young ex-pects senior Logan Butler to play in a reserve roll at defensive tackle.

“I think the unknown right now is can we play four quarters.

I thought we played two really good quarters, actually one and a half, in the jamboree,” Young said of his first team members and lead-ing reserves.

Young added that his concern was not just whether his Ranburne play-ers were sufficiently conditioned physically to play four quarters “but can we stay focused” for an entire game.

In their jamboree game, the Bull-dogs appeared to have scored first but a 33-yard touchdown pass with just over a minute left in the first quarter was wiped off the score-board by an illegal shift penalty.

Young said that later in game, the Bulldogs had consecutive plays where part of the offensive unit ran one play and part another play.

“I think that was a lack of focus,” he said.

We are approaching the start of the 2012 high school football campaign. What a season it will be. There are a lot of new faces leading various area teams this year. Coaches and players have worked very hard during the summer. They will be ready for some tough, hard-hitting football action this week. A few of our area football teams will get underway this Thursday night. All eyes will be on newly established Clay County Central High School. The Volunteers will be under the leadership of Coach Steve Giddens. Clay

County Central will open the season against Trinity this week.

Our local schools should be very competitive this season in region play. The Ranburne Bulldogs will be led by Jared Edwards at quarterback and Clayton Young at the fullback position. The Cleburne County Tigers will battle in a tough region once again with Anniston, Alexandria, Jacksonville, Munford, Lincoln, Hokes Bluff and Cherokee County. The Tigers will be led by quarterbacks Brady Padgett and Christian Henson. Trey Bolton, John

Butler, Danny Sweat and Blake Turner will share the backfield at running back. We wish both our county teams the best of luck this season. Lets take a quick look at week number one’s BIG WINNERS.

Cleburne County at Weaver-----The Cleburne County Tigers will take on the Weaver Bearcats in week one of the 2012 football season.

Both teams played in scrimmages on last week and looked very impressive. Once both teams get past the opening game jitters, fans should be in for a great grid-iron battle. Both

teams have pretty talented running backs and the team that plays the best defensively will win. The Tigers will be pumped and they will come away with a big road victory this week. Cleburne County wins 20-14 over Weaver.

Ranburne at Mount Zion, GA-----The Mount Zion Eagles will host Coach Chad Young and the Ranburne Bulldogs this Friday night. What a dandy this will be.

The Bulldogs looked very good last week on offense in their football jamboree. Clayton Young had a great game. The

Bulldog defense hung real tough. Its the Dogs and Eagles in Mount Zion’s new football complex. A huge crowd will be on hand and they’ll see Ranburne defeat Mount Zion 26-12.

Wellborn at Saks-----Saks High School is the place to be this week as the Wildcats take on Wellborn. The Panthers and Wildcats are in for a mighty big battle. Saks will be under the leadership of Coach Miller.

These two teams are very talented and they really lay it all on the line when they face each other. This is a bragging rights special

between neighboring schools. A huge crowd should be on hand and they will see two strong teams duel it out in week one of the 2012 season. Look for the Wellborn Panthers to take this contest, winning 17-13 over the Saks Wildcats.

Other Scores: Etowah defeating Alexandria 21-7, Anniston ripping Greenville 22-17, Jacksonville crushing Pleasant Valley 31-14, Carrolton, GA upending Oxford 14-13, Piedmont over Cherokee County 27-13 and Clay County Central edging Trinity 28-23.
